Martin Guptill has opened up about New Zealand’s heartbreaking loss to England in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 final, describing it as "the best and worst day" of his cricketing career. Guptill fielded brilliantly during the showpiece event, but had a poor tournament with the bat - totalling 186 runs in 10 innings with just one half-century. Guptill, who was not a part of New Zealand’s Test squad for their two-match series against Sri Lanka, will feature in the limited-overs leg, featuring three T20s, the first of which takes place on September 1 (Sunday).

00:00 All right we're here with Martin Guptill. Great to see you mate.
00:03 What's it like to be back in camp? Yeah it's really good. It's been a couple of
00:07 months since the one day team's been together and it's nice to be back with the
00:11 fellas and see a few familiar faces. How's training been so far adjusting to
00:14 the heat? It's slightly different to what it's been in England but
00:18 that's what you come here for. You come a few days early to apply for tyres and
00:21 things like that but no it's very hot and sweaty and you get some pretty
00:23 wet hair at the end of training. Nice and can you tell us a little bit about your
00:27 playing stint over in the UK and how it's prepared you for over here?
00:31 Yeah it was good playing. I think we got through nine T20s with a couple of rain
00:34 outs in England and just nice to be playing that format for a while leading into this T20
00:38 series so you know I feel like I'm ready to go and hopefully I can go out and spend a bit of time out there and score a few runs for us.
00:43 You played in this part of the world before and what do you know about it?
00:46 A few times here yeah. I first came here in 2006 at the Under-19 World Cup so I've been coming here a few times and it's very hot and sweaty and you know
00:55 it's a bit of a different time to face at home but the work that I put in at Palli Kelly is generally alright and you know hopefully we can get a couple of big scores on the board.
01:02 And just talk about the squad. You're one of the real senior guys here especially in this one when you look around the dressing room.
01:07 Yeah it makes me feel a bit old to be honest Willie but it's nice to have that experience behind me and you know I've been here a few times before so hopefully my experiences here in the past can contribute to a few wins for us.
01:19 Just looking at the T20 team, obviously there's a World T20 next year, there's a lot of T20 cricket coming up. It must be pretty exciting that you actually set yourself a goal in looking at another World Cup.
01:28 Yeah absolutely. I mean you know T20 World Cups are always good fun and you know with it being in Australia next year you know it's completely different conditions to what we'll get at home as well.
01:38 So it's going to be nice to start it off I guess our preparation here and you know play in some trying conditions and then you know head home with a good five T20 series against England to lead off the summer.
01:48 I've got to ask you what was it like staying around in England after the World Cup final? Plenty of people I imagine coming up to you and wanting to talk about the game?
01:54 Yeah there's a fair few. We got a bit of stick from the crowd as well but you know I think it was actually from where we were away and even home games we've got a bit of stick.
02:00 It's something that you've just got to put up with and move on pretty quickly so you know I'm here now with the boys and I'm raring to go.
02:07 Cool. When you look back at the campaign overall and what the whole team went through I mean how do you view it I suppose?
02:14 I guess you see it as sort of the best and worst day of your cricketing career you know. The ebbs and flows of the game made it such a good one for the spectators of that and it's just unfortunate that we came out on the other side of it.
02:23 And what about the team in general and the overall campaign leading to a World Cup final? How much has it sort of inspired the nation back home and there's a lot of people who are pretty proud of the team?
02:30 Yeah I guess it's pretty similar to the 2015 World Cup I think we played some amazing cricket at both tournaments and to get to both finals and come up a little bit short is pretty gut wrenching but that's all part of the game.
02:42 Awesome. I suppose you're looking forward to getting home and playing in front of the fans in the summer as well?
02:46 Absolutely mate. It's no better place to play than at home in front of your home crowd so I'm looking forward to getting back there and hopefully the weather plays ball in early November.
02:54 Thanks for watching!
