00:00 Welcome back to the Killer Frogs Killer Minute, a Fan Nation College Football Podcast brought to you weekly by KillerFrogs.com.
00:07 I'm Brett Gibbons and I'm once again joined by Davis Wilson.
00:10 Davis, thank you for joining me today. How are you doing?
00:13 Brett, thanks for having me. Always great to be on. I'm doing very well. How are you?
00:18 I'm really excited to talk real life football.
00:21 Those listening to the podcast, you're probably TCU fans, Big 12 fans.
00:25 Well, we don't have either of those on tap this week, but we have real life college football.
00:29 So we are going to be talking about week zero, kind of the warm up.
00:32 There's a well, it's not the most jam-packed slate of games,
00:36 but there are some interesting matchups. I think to talk about plus we're going to talk about some rule changes off the top just that people aren't caught off guard this season.
00:44 There is some changes coming to the game and I don't just mean commentary alignment.
00:48 So I do want to start with those rule changes. We'll be brief about it because there's not many talk about
00:53 but there is one big one that I think is super important
00:56 and that is the clock is going to continue to run on first downs except in the final two minutes of the half.
01:02 So traditionally since 1967 the clock has stopped on first downs in college.
01:07 That's kind of how they've operated their two minute.
01:10 Well, I guess not two minute offense, but that's kind of how they've off operated their high tempo offense for the past 50 years almost that is coming to an end this year though.
01:19 The goal from the competition committee was to cut down on the number of plays.
01:25 I guess it's a player safety thing. I don't really see how that's going to be a huge player safety.
01:29 You're cutting down about six plays a game. I think the math comes out to but they're not decreasing the broadcast blocks.
01:36 So really what it's doing is less football more commercials, you know, how that goes with TV is what it is.
01:43 And then the other rule change just of note is that teams can no longer call back-to-back timeouts.
01:48 Thank goodness because some of the end of games were kind of unwatchable kind of that basketball issue that we have but Davis.
01:53 How are you feeling about these new rule changes?
01:56 Well, I'm really curious to see if it changes anything from a viewers perspective.
02:03 You mentioned the commercial breaks. I imagine that's going to be something that viewers notice.
02:10 I am really glad that they didn't take it away altogether because I think having it in the last two minutes was certainly essential because you can you still have that opportunity for those tents,
02:21 you know, late game drives where it's high speed. It's high tempo and that was kind of how it was all game.
02:28 But I'm I am glad that they're keeping that in the last two minutes and I don't know.
02:33 I don't know what it's going to be like. I'm very,
02:35 very curious to see if there's anything real noticeable and if it affects the viewers experience at all.
02:44 I'm with you. I don't know if there's going to be a decrease in viewership this year or if that comes next year or maybe not at all.
02:51 There may not be a decrease in viewership.
02:53 I think we are going to see some sort of ratings hit just because of all the changes coming to college football.
02:57 It's going to be kind of an unfamiliar sport to many that have grown to love it over the past years, decades plus next season.
03:05 I wonder though if the viewership will increase this year because of all the intrigue around the Pac-12 that's going away and all those kind of things.
03:12 But I'm also really interested to see if the clock changes.
03:16 Does it change the scoring at all? Is there less scoring? Is there more scoring?
03:20 I've seen arguments from both sides. I personally don't know.
03:22 So I am interested to see how that goes in. Just a couple of final notes here for the 2023 season as we lead into it.
03:28 Like I said, this is probably the final year at the Pac-12 unless they figure out some sort of merger with the Mountain West or something.
03:34 And then the major players in the Big 12 here, Texas, Oklahoma, they're obviously out.
03:37 This is the final year before we shift to a 12 team playoff, which I am completely and utterly against.
03:42 I know a lot of people are for it because it increases competition, gives everybody a seat at the table.
03:46 But, you know, that's that's a topic for a podcast next offseason.
03:51 And I think 2024 kind of rings in a new beginning of college football.
03:54 Again, like I said, it's going to become an unfamiliar sport.
03:57 So let's talk about the sport we are familiar with. And let's talk about some of these games.
04:02 TCU doesn't play this week. I mentioned that off the top. The Horned Frogs start their season.
04:05 It's kind of a main event next week. Week one versus Colorado Buffaloes.
04:09 It's going to be held at A.M. and G. Carter Stadium. Kickoff. Everyone's favorite 11 a.m.
04:13 Central ahead because it's a Fox big noon kickoff. I don't know if I love that, but it's TV viewership.
04:19 But the first game, Navy Notre Dame, this one is kind of the one I think has the most intrigue on the day.
04:24 Kicks off one thirty p.m. Central on NBC and Peacock. They're playing this one in Dublin, Ireland.
04:29 Not the first time that they've played it. 2012 was the last time they went over the pond to play this game.
04:34 Notre Dame leads the all time series. Seventy nine to thirteen to one with a couple more vacated wins.
04:39 And Notre Dame also owned a 43 year win streak from 1964 to 06 over Navy.
04:46 Last year, the Irish went up thirty five thirteen at halftime, but then they let Navy back into it.
04:51 They won by three. Thirty five. Thirty two. Navy's got a brand new coaching staff from the top down,
04:55 but they also have a new offensive system, which I think is really important to note,
04:58 because we know Navy is that under center wing T triple option.
05:02 They're still going to run some form of an option is just going to be more modernized.
05:05 Maybe what we saw at Coastal Carolina. But if you go back and look at Kennesaw State tape,
05:09 which is few and far between, you see the new offensive coordinator Grant Chestnut,
05:13 his kind of spin on that. They throw the ball a little bit more and it's run mostly from the shotgun.
05:17 That's because cut blocks outside of the tackle box were banned a couple of years ago,
05:21 and it's really hurt the service Academy's ability to run these.
05:24 Also, if you're looking at Navy's injury situation, the quarterback room is just destroyed.
05:29 Three of the top five guys are either hurt or ineligible.
05:31 So we're going to see who's in there. I think Horvath Blake Horvath is going to be the guy quarterback out of Ohio.
05:38 Good runner. We can expect that from midshipman quarterback.
05:41 And the Notre Dame added Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman.
05:44 Navy fielded the worst passing defense in the country last year.
05:47 So I expect Notre Dame will be able to move the ball again this year through the year.
05:51 So first and foremost, how do you feel about the selection of the first FBS college football game of the 2023 season?
05:58 Well, Notre Dame is a huge brand, big name. I think it's good to get them get them out there early.
06:05 Another thing is that I loved I thought the Ireland game last year was so fun.
06:10 The Nebraska Northwestern just a fun football game.
06:14 Hopefully we see something like that. Although I think I don't know what the spread is.
06:21 I read it. I read it earlier today, but it's 20 and a half.
06:24 It's like Navy 20 and a half in favor of Notre Dame.
06:27 Yeah. Yeah. So it's not the best football game we're going to see,
06:32 but I think getting to getting a look at Sam Hartman early against a defense who is not great at stopping the pass,
06:43 getting to see him kind of get to cut it loose in his first game at Notre Dame will be fun.
06:48 You brought up the Nebraska Northwestern game and that fun was is is an objectively correct word for it.
06:54 I would also throw hilarious in there for a game.
06:57 Anybody watch that last year? Just an outstanding piece of television.
07:01 But give me a winner production prediction doesn't have to be with a score.
07:04 But if you have a score on you, let's hear it. What do you think happens between Navy and Notre Dame?
07:09 I am going to take I'm going to be boring and take Notre Dame,
07:12 although I think it would be really fun to see Navy come in and be an upset right off the bat.
07:18 Can't ask for anything better. I am excited to see Navy's new offense.
07:23 You mentioned Grant Chestnut coming from Kennesaw State.
07:26 I I looked at some of those statistics and his team,
07:31 his offense is ranked top three in rushing and FCS, I think six of the last seven years.
07:38 Wow. Which is something that Navy does and that he can continue to do in Navy.
07:47 But yeah, like I said, Notre Dame is the better team.
07:53 I'm taking the Irish in Ireland. I'm oh, I didn't even think of that.
07:57 Yeah, I'm with you is if I had any sort of trepidation against taking Notre Dame,
08:01 the fact that they're the fight in Irish playing in Ireland. I'm with you.
08:04 I'm going to take I'm going to take Notre Dame here. Moving on to the next game.
08:07 We have UTEP at Jacksonville State. Another game that I think has a bit of intrigue,
08:11 even if it's not evident right off the top. This game kicks off at 4 30 p.m.
08:15 Central on CBS Sports Network. The reason I think this game is so interesting is
08:19 because this is Jacksonville State's first game as a member of the FBS.
08:23 They're moving up this year from the FCS where they were a pretty good team.
08:26 If you know the name Rich Rodriguez, he's coached at Arizona and Michigan.
08:29 Well, he is in charge of Jacksonville State. I think UTEP has the size advantage.
08:33 Well, I know you to UTEP has the size advantage hit the line scrimmage.
08:37 It's pretty stark by about 40 pounds per player their offensive line versus defensive line.
08:42 They should have a very good run game. Jacksonville State's defense not expected to be very good.
08:46 It wasn't great last year. They don't really do a whole lot moving up to be a great unit this year.
08:51 But what's interesting to watch Jacksonville State's quarterback Zion Webb.
08:54 He's a dynamic athlete and his NCAA eligibility waiver was granted.
08:58 So he will play but he's listed as an or starter with Logan Smothers,
09:03 who's a four-star three-star transfer. Pardon me from Nebraska.
09:07 So I think you type of be able to line up run the football.
09:10 The Vegas betting odds think it's going to be a close game. It's close to zero.
09:14 So we toss up basically 50/50. I don't know if I see it that way.
09:20 But if we're talking about FCS teams moving up to FPS teams, James Madison kind of set the groundwork
09:24 for overestimating the team ability to move up from FCS to FPS.
09:28 We've also seen successes like App State real quickly. Coastal Carolina did not take long to get on the ground running.
09:35 So what's your temperature check and expectations on Jacksonville State this year?
09:40 I think Jacksonville State's going to be a really fun football team.
09:43 Zion Webb is entering his seventh year, which is some real sickos committee stuff right there.
09:51 And then they have, yeah, I think their offense is going to be super fun.
09:55 I don't think their defense is going to be much of anything, but I'm excited.
09:59 I'll be recruiting for them this year to see if they can exceed expectations quickly.
10:06 You mentioned Rich Rodriguez, who has plenty of experience coaching FPS football.
10:12 So, yeah, I'm rooting for them. I think they'll be a fun team.
10:17 This will be an interesting first test for them. As you said, UTEP is so much bigger.
10:22 UTEP had a really, really solid defense last year. I think they're top 50 in success rate.
10:29 But I think one of their weaknesses I read was explosive plays.
10:36 They allowed explosive plays. And this is an offense, I think, that if Zion Webb, Malik Jackson,
10:42 those running backs, a couple of experienced wide receivers, I think they have the capability to make some big plays.
10:48 But I think it'll just come down to whether or not UTEP's defense can handle that.
10:55 But yeah, Jacksonville State rooting for them for sure.
10:57 And it will be exciting to see how they do right off the bat.
11:00 And they're not playing this week, but they are located in the great state of Texas.
11:04 Sam Houston State is also moving up from FCS to FBS. Just kind of do you expect similar things from them?
11:10 They're kind of the opposite. They're the antithesis of Jacksonville State.
11:14 Just we'll talk about them at some point, but just a little bit of background.
11:17 They kind of punted last year by redshirting a bunch of guys because they knew that they were ineligible for the FCS postseason.
11:24 And so they promised these guys an extra year of eligibility in the FBS.
11:27 And they just redshirt all the guys. They weren't injured. None of that. A whole bunch of key guys.
11:30 Those guys are back this year. They didn't feel much of an offense, but they did feel a terrific defense.
11:35 Bill Conley of ESPN, I believe, is the one that said this. If you can combine Jacksonville State with Sam Houston State,
11:41 taking the offense, Jacksonville State, that is in the defense of Sam Houston State, you'd have one pretty good football team.
11:46 But I just thought to the in-state Sam Houston State. Yeah, I mean, again,
11:51 I think it's always exciting and interesting to see an FCS team jump to FBS to see what that talent gap is really like.
12:00 They yeah, the defense was awesome last year. Didn't get to see much of an offense.
12:05 But this year I'm excited to get to see those guys who did redshirt.
12:09 And once again, I'll be watching and I'll be rooting for them and their success just because I think those are fun stories.
12:16 And this is the UTEP at Jacksonville State. That is back to that.
12:19 This is the only game involving a team from the state of Texas this week.
12:23 So why are you rooting for Texas or you rooting for Jacksonville State?
12:26 What's what's your prediction in this game? Yeah, I think it's tough because I would love to see Jacksonville State come in and immediately be a fun new FBS team.
12:40 I think I I think I lean UTEP just because I don't think you can underestimate size and college football.
12:47 And that's such a massive thing. I think I lean UTEP, but I do think it'll be a fun game.
12:53 I'm rooting my bank account, I should say, is rooting for UTEP to absolutely roll them.
12:57 I like you said, especially in college football, especially in Conference USA and smaller scale college football.
13:03 The size up front is such a huge advantage. It's not like the NFL where, yeah, this team's offensive line is bigger,
13:08 but you have professionals that are extremely athletic on the defensive line.
13:11 I don't think that's what we're getting at all. I'd be surprised to see UTEP not just blow this team right off the line of scrimmage.
13:17 So my I'm a betting man. I don't live in Texas, so I'm legally allowed to do that.
13:22 But I am rooting for UTEP to roll here.
13:26 The third game that I think in the final game, I think that we're going to go super in depth.
13:29 We'll touch on all of them. But the final game we're going to go really in depth with here,
13:33 I think is most intrigue personally of this slate.
13:36 That's the Ohio Bobcats. San Diego State Aztecs kicks off at 6 p.m.
13:40 Central on FS1. Most importantly, I think QB Curtis Rourke for Ohio.
13:45 He is going to play. He tours ACL late in November in the season, had to miss the postseason last year.
13:50 And it was kind of in question whether or not he was going to be ready for the start of the season.
13:54 Well, he is and his his presence matters quite a bit.
13:58 If you ask me, if you look at San Diego State,
14:01 they were no better than one hundredth in pace of play. That's seconds per play dating back to 2015.
14:07 They're also a hundred and second and fourth down attempt rate. I know there's a lot of people here.
14:10 They're rolling their eyes. Oh, geez, we're going to be talking about going for on fourth down.
14:14 Well, when you're a team that doesn't run a lot of plays and runs a really kind of conservative offense
14:18 and has been outside the top scoring recently,
14:22 you kind of want to see some more fourth down attempts to get the ball rolling a little bit,
14:25 but they're super conservative. Their offense was just always painful to watch last year,
14:29 but they do bring in a new offensive coordinator that being Ryan Lindley.
14:32 And those who that are attuned to college football on a national scale might recognize his name.
14:36 He is the all-time leading passer at San Diego State. He's back.
14:40 But of course, the Aztecs, they're again expected to field a very good defense.
14:46 This is probably my most anticipated game on a very lightweight zero slate.
14:51 Maybe aside from Notre Dame Navy just because that's the official ringing in of the season.
14:55 I think this game is the most intrigue. So how do you see it? Who do you think wins this game?
15:01 Well, first, I'm really excited to watch Curtis Turok play again.
15:04 He was so much fun last year. Mac offensive player of the year.
15:10 I think it's awesome that he was able to recover in time to be back for this game.
15:15 It seems to me like this could be a showdown between an Ohio offense
15:21 that I expect to be pretty fun and prolific and a San Diego State defense to has been good for years.
15:28 And that's kind of their thing is the San Diego State fields a good defense.
15:33 So it'll be interesting to see which one of those matchups will win.
15:36 And on the other side of that, you know, can Ohio's defense step up?
15:41 Can San Diego State's offense under new leadership step up?
15:44 I think it'll be exciting. I have Ohio winning because just because of that offense,
15:50 I think there's a lot of weapons there. They also have the Mac freshman of the year running back.
15:57 I may butcher this name, C.A. Bangura, but he's coming back as well.
16:02 He had a fun. He had a good year last year. So I will take the Bobcats in this one.
16:07 But I do expect a pretty, pretty competitive game.
16:11 I don't know if I'm ready to go Ohio outright just because they're traveling twenty three hundred miles to play a team with a good defense.
16:16 That's that's tough. I want Ohio to win. I am a bit partial to the Ohio Bobcats.
16:22 I'm a Mac grad myself, so I love to see the Mac kind of wreak havoc on the nation.
16:26 It's going to be a close game. I think I'm really excited, like you said, to see Curtis work come back.
16:32 Ohio is a lot of really fun offensive pieces. You mentioned the running back.
16:34 They've also got a receiver to know Sam Wigless. He used to play for Ohio State.
16:38 Has a really nice story, too, if you kind of dive into what he's been through and now is a star for Ohio.
16:44 The one player I'm kind of sad to not see, though, return for San Diego State is a receiver, a slot receiver by the name of Jesse Matthews.
16:50 He was awesome, but he has moved on. So I don't really know if San Diego State has any pieces or quarterbacks.
16:54 OK, it's a toss up. Yeah, I'll go.
16:58 How I'll go with my heart. I'll agree with you there. Not much disagreement on picks there.
17:02 I want to run through the final. Let's see. I five games written on here.
17:05 We're going to go really fast through these. Not a whole lot to get into.
17:10 UMass at New Mexico State, the primetime six p.m. central kickoff on ESPN.
17:14 Just a quick nugget. UMass scored 13 or less nine times last season.
17:19 So not a whole lot of offensive firepower. Who are you taking in that game? Yeah, I'm going to take New Mexico State.
17:26 I think it might be the boring pick, but I I think that's probably the right pick.
17:32 I'm taking my our old friend Jerry Kill, who spent time here.
17:37 I do have a fun. I do have a fun note, though, for you, if that's OK.
17:40 Yes, please. The UMass quarterback Tyson Pumbachan.
17:46 So he was he was ranked really highly in the 2019 class.
17:50 And I was he's I think he's he was the fifth dual threat guy in that class.
17:55 And I was curious about what those rankings look like.
17:58 So I found some it's pretty some fun names. So the four guys ahead of him on that list in the 2019 dual threat class,
18:05 Bo Nix, Jaden Daniels, Sam Howell and our and our friend Max Duggan and some of the guys below him were Rochon Johnson,
18:14 who ended up running back KJ Jefferson and John Rice Plumlee.
18:19 So I just thought that was kind of a funny, funny quarterback class. Ranked highly.
18:25 I wonder if he'll be able to kind of get his career going at UMass.
18:29 That's incredible. I love that. Whoops, I guess for her for his career so far.
18:36 But I'm also kind of like, oh, I love to see him just light it up. Oh, that's so much fun.
18:41 I'm taking New Mexico State, Diego Pavia, baby, let's go.
18:44 I'm all in on Diego Pavia after he tore up my bowl in Green Falcons in that bowl game.
18:49 Hawaii Vanderbilt, 630 p.m. on SEC Network last season, Vanderbilt Russ for 404 yards and scored 63 points on the road against Hawaii.
18:57 Who are you taking in that game? I'm going to take Vanderbilt.
19:01 I think Hawaii will not be as bad as they were last year.
19:05 I think they have a better team. Their quarterback, Braden Shager, was not good at the beginning of last year.
19:12 I expect him to be a little bit better. They're returning.
19:17 I think they're returning their leading tackler, leading sack man and their leading interception man on defense.
19:21 So it won't be I don't think it'll be as bad of a game, but I am going to take Vanderbilt.
19:28 I have a I have a good friend on Vanderbilt. He'll be doing kickoffs for them.
19:32 Will Ferris. So I will arrive with the Commodores on that.
19:36 But I wouldn't be shocked if Hawaii at least let me at least improved upon last last year's showing.
19:44 Pretty hard to get worse. Sixty three to ten blow. I'll also take Vanderbilt.
19:48 Couple of fun nuggets. They renamed their stadium from Vanderbilt Stadium to first bank stadium.
19:53 And it is currently halfway built. They deconstructed the two end zones.
19:57 They're working on that. So you'll see that if you tune in to SEC Network.
20:00 A fun one here. FCS matchup, South Carolina State versus Jackson State kicks off at 630 p.m. on ABC from Atlanta.
20:07 This is the annual Miak versus Swack Challenge. Who are you taking?
20:12 Jackson State. I don't I will be honest. I don't know a ton about either of these teams.
20:17 Jackson State, I know, lost some pieces, lost their head coach, lost their quarterback,
20:21 but it lost their their superstar cornerback.
20:25 But I am going to ride with Jackson State here. To beat South Carolina State, I'm with you.
20:32 Jackson State, I think, is the more talented team. They return a total of three starters out of their 22 total.
20:37 That is one entire starter on offense. Everybody else departed along with primetime.
20:40 Who can blame them? That was kind of their coach that brought them there and champion for Jackson State.
20:44 I'm still taking them, though. I think they're a much more talented team.
20:47 San Jose State at USC, 7 p.m. kickoff locally or I'm sorry, not locally,
20:53 but the central local to those listening here on the Pac-12 network.
20:57 If you wanted to watch this game too bad, it's on Pac-12 network and nobody can get that.
21:01 USC is also a 31 point favorite. I feel like it's almost pointless to ask who you think is going to win.
21:08 So I'll say, do you think San Jose State makes this a game at all?
21:14 No, I don't. I think. I mean, USC should win this game by a lot of points.
21:22 First look at reigning Heisman Caleb Williams this year.
21:26 Yeah, I don't think it'll be close and I'm taking the Trojans by the 31.
21:31 I'm with you there. I'll hand you a blank piece of paper and you can write down any number
21:35 and that's about how many points USC will score in this game.
21:37 So I don't think the limit exists here.
21:40 And then the final game. This one's a little bit interesting to me just because of how bad both of these teams were last year
21:46 and how bad one of them is projected to be that's Florida International or better known as FIU at Louisiana Tech.
21:53 This game kicks off at 8 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
21:56 The forecast high in Ruston, Louisiana, beautiful Ruston, Louisiana is 105 degrees on Saturday.
22:03 We are talking all time records set here, even at 8 p.m.
22:08 It's still going to be one hundred and one ninety seven. The heat indices are going to be still well over a hundred.
22:13 This is going to be a this is gonna be a tough game to play football in retaking in this slap fight.
22:19 I'm taking Louisiana Tech and Sonny Cumbie, although I think FIU could make it a game.
22:26 Grace and James are quarterback. I think he'll be better.
22:31 But I yeah, I'm going to take Louisiana Tech. I think they're favored by nine and a half for ten points.
22:38 I think that's pretty fair, although I could see FIU making it a game.
22:41 I'm taking Louisiana Tech. I think we've agreed on every single one so far.
22:45 So I am going to disagree on this one. I'm going to be calling for an upset for FIU to win this game.
22:51 I historically and let me put some context behind this.
22:55 Louisiana Tech is favored by ten, ten and a half, eleven points, depending on where you look.
22:59 Historically, favorites in that category went about seventy five percent of their games.
23:04 There's 13 games on the slate this year that have that projected point spread at the time,
23:08 which means we can expect about three upsets. I'm going to take this one.
23:12 I think when you're talking about one hundred degrees plus, Louisiana Tech has some injuries to their backfield.
23:17 I don't think they're very deep right now, especially with injuries and there are.
23:19 And like Sonny Cumbie loves running this fast paced, super up top of offense.
23:24 I think that's actually going to hurt, especially if you're missing depth.
23:26 Guys are going to get tired, cramp. The heat's going to be just pounding down on them.
23:30 You know, both teams are from hot, humid climates, so it's not foreign territory to either one of them.
23:36 But I think if I'm taking I'm going to take the more deep team, I guess the less injured team, that being FIU.
23:41 Week zero is weird. I got to have at least one weird game on here.
23:44 So I'm taking FIU over Louisiana Tech. Hot take. Well, I'm going to leave you guys.
23:50 I'm going to leave you guys on that hot take because that's all the time we have for today.
