00:17 That's why we can be sure that Cinemalaya will win the Best Director award in the short film category
00:25 for the film "Makoko sa Baybay" directed by Micah Barles.
00:29 Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines, Direct Mike.
00:32 Good morning, Direct Mike.
00:33 Hello, good morning to all of you.
00:37 Okay, first of all, Direct Mike, congratulations.
00:41 Can you hear me?
00:42 Yes, loud and clear.
00:43 There's a slight delay.
00:47 But again, first of all, Direct Mike, congratulations on winning the Best Director award
00:53 in the Cinemalaya Film Festival 2023 for "Makoko sa Baybay".
00:58 What was your inspiration for this film?
01:02 Thank you very much.
01:06 The inspiration for the film is related to my personal life as a child.
01:13 I grew up in Bulinao, in my province.
01:16 It's part of Pangasinan where the film was shot.
01:22 We're close to the sea, so there were events in the film that were close to the sea.
01:31 So, there.
01:33 It's also a trivia.
01:35 Whenever there are events in our family or our relatives, we always go to the sea to celebrate.
01:42 But when I was in high school, I moved to Manila to study.
01:47 So, I always look for the sea, not just because I want to swim here.
01:53 But I have people who bring me back here, who are close to my life.
01:58 And that's what I...
02:02 That's what I was looking for when I was looking for a place to live.
02:08 So, there.
02:09 That's a really good inspiration. I just saw the pictures.
02:13 You grew up in Bulinao, Pangasinan. The beaches there are beautiful.
02:17 But what does "makoko sa baybay" mean?
02:22 "Makoko sa baybay" means "I am going to the beach."
02:30 It's related to the Ilocano language, particularly Bulinao.
02:37 So, Bulinao has its own language, aside from Ilocano.
02:42 So, that's the story behind the short film.
02:48 - So, that's what it means. - That's what it means.
02:50 Okay, Direk. Your win was very important.
02:53 So, what was your reaction when you first heard that you were chosen as the Best Director for the short film category?
03:01 I didn't feel a lot of emotions that day.
03:11 So, I was a bit nervous.
03:13 When I saw the stage, I didn't know what to say at that time.
03:18 But, I definitely felt very honored to receive that kind of honor.
03:27 Because, first, it's a representation of my province.
03:32 So, it's a big honor for the province of Bulinao.
03:36 I also want to thank the Makoko sa Baybay team for helping me materialize the film.
03:47 - Okay. - So, I was nervous.
03:51 Direk, as a director, this is a short film.
03:55 What were the trials that you experienced while making this short film, Makoko sa Baybay?
04:04 In the film, Makoko sa Baybay, one of the challenges was the imperfection.
04:14 But, because my actors are non-professional, my grandmother was the one who was born as an old woman in the film.
04:25 And, my cousin, Noor, was the lead.
04:30 It was a challenge because they didn't have experience acting.
04:43 So, it was a challenge.
04:45 But, at the same time, it was easy for me to direct them because they are close to my life.
04:52 So, I know how to direct them.
04:55 So, that's it.
04:57 Okay, Direk Mike. I'm very curious. I'm sure you're a great director.
05:01 But, among the great directors nowadays, how did you maintain the originality of your style in Makoko sa Baybay?
05:09 Actually, I still look for my voice as a filmmaker.
05:19 I was still young in the industry.
05:22 And, when I grew up in the province, I knew how to live there.
05:31 It's slow and quiet.
05:33 So, I interpreted that style in the films I made.
05:38 And, that's one of the things that I like about Makoko sa Baybay.
05:40 And, you can see in the film, it's a long shot.
05:44 And, the shots are steady.
05:46 So, it's like...
05:48 I can live in the province and it's quiet.
05:53 So, I'm a director or a filmmaker.
06:00 Okay, I'm not pre-empting you.
06:02 But, what is the most important aspect of the story?
06:06 And, what message do you want to convey to the viewers?
06:12 Makoko sa Baybay is a continuous film, especially in the short film.
06:19 And, one of the most important aspects of the story,
06:24 which I always bring with me,
06:27 is the personal side of the story.
06:31 Or, the truth of the stories we tell.
06:34 Because, that's important.
06:35 Because, that's what we're trying to capture in the stories.
06:39 Like in the film, Makoko sa Baybay, it's a part of my personal life.
06:45 So, it's easy to tell a story.
06:49 And, don't stop making films.
06:55 That's great.
06:57 Again, congratulations, Direk.
06:59 Thank you for giving us your time this morning.
07:02 And, hopefully, you'll get a lot of inspiration.
07:04 It will inspire other young directors.
07:06 Because, we can see that the director is very young.
07:09 Yes.
07:11 We were able to watch the director of Nanalo.
07:13 So, 2023, Cinemalaya will be the Best Director for Short Film Category
07:17 for the film Makoko sa Baybay, directed by Mike Cavarles.
07:19 Again, Direk, thank you very much.
07:21 Thank you.
07:23 Thank you very much.
