Can Wales surprise at the World Cup?

  • last year
We’re in Cardiff city centre looking forward to the World Cup starting next week. And despite a rocky year in welsh rugby, the people here seem surprisingly confident that with a bit of luck on their side, warren gatlan’s inexperienced squad can turn a few heads in France.

00:04 Well, hoping for the best, but concerned we're a bit under-ready and under-cooked really.
00:10 A young team. But you never know, we've got to punch a chance I think.
00:16 Yeah, not too bad. The friendlies lately have actually not been too bad,
00:20 although I do feel like we're sort of lacking a bit behind.
00:24 But I think we'll actually surprise a lot of people to be fair.
00:27 I think we'll do alright. I'm hoping that we can get quite far, but
00:31 yeah, it's a bit of a weird one sometimes because I feel like the usual teams do a lot better
00:36 and Wales are always all over the place, but I really do have a lot of confidence to be fair.
00:40 So our first quarter-finals against Argentina or England probably.
00:44 So I think we'll do well because today England got lost to Fiji.
00:48 So I think we'll do, if we are going to get out of the group, I think we'll do quite well.
00:51 Yeah, of course, maybe then putting stuff behind, keeping stuff for the World Cup.
00:56 I just hope they have a good plan for us.
00:58 Yeah, they can. I think we're always going to be optimistic and being Welsh I think we always are,
01:01 but we always tend to fear the worst. But we're going to be up against it I think with Fiji.
01:05 Australia I think we've got a good chance.
01:09 Yeah, my daughter's going out there and I know she's got tickets to the final.
01:15 Yeah, I mean we've got a chance, we've got a chance.
01:18 The younger players tend to have no fear, so fingers crossed.
01:23 I hope we can do something and make the nation proud.
01:26 I'm not Welsh myself, but I am. England's not doing amazing, but I'm excited though.
01:31 If England, well I know we have no chance, but if Wales are playing, I'll support Wales.
01:39 If England are playing, I'll support Wales.
01:41 Hopefully Wales will do very well. Yeah, they've done well in the past,
01:44 so we'll see how it goes in the forthcoming events.
01:47 I think so, I think they've got it of a go haven't they?
01:50 I think it'll bring a bit of exuberance to the atmosphere and also the general community.
01:56 Bring enjoyment and ask people what they think about it. I think it'll be great, fantastic.
02:01 It would be. Seeing the locals enjoying themselves, bringing the pubs together.
02:06 What, you can't go wrong with a couple of drinks watching the game.
02:09 It's not the perfect group stage, but I think we should get through it.
02:13 Yeah, I don't think Australia are going to do as well to be honest.
02:18 Probably, I think it would probably give us a good time, but yeah I think Australia,
02:22 I'm not as worried about them as I usually would be to be fair.
02:25 But yeah, group stage, no issues for the group stage.
02:28 After that I think it's going to be a bit rocky though to be fair.
02:30 Yeah, it will be, and good experience for young players.
02:32 You know we have a lot of new, especially centres, a lot of inexperienced centres,
02:36 because we need new players now that Hadley Parkson, Jonathan Davies have left us.
02:42 So I think it'll be a good opportunity, maybe to build on for the next week.
02:45 Yeah, it is, it will be.
02:48 You know, some things will happen that will be unexpected,
02:50 so fingers crossed the unexpected things happen to Wales and they'll be good things.
02:54 Sometimes just a bounce of a ball can change an outcome of a game,
02:58 so let's hope the bounce of the ball is going to be good for Wales.
