The short answer is yes. However, it’s probably not the type of love you’re thinking of right now.
If you’re an average person who sees love as something along the lines of understanding, acceptance, and compromise, then you’re in for a surprising ride, because this is what truly happens when a narcissist falls in love.

00:00 - Hey Psych2Goers, can a narcissist fall in love?
00:05 The short answer is yes.
00:07 However, it's probably not the type of love
00:09 you're thinking of right now.
00:11 Love is different for everybody.
00:12 This applies especially well in the case of narcissists.
00:16 Since they have psychological deficits
00:18 that impact emotional assessment,
00:20 they tend to show their love in a weird, selfish way.
00:24 So if you're an average person who sees love
00:26 as something along the lines of understanding,
00:28 acceptance and compromise,
00:30 then you're in for a surprising ride
00:33 because this is what truly happens
00:35 when a narcissist falls in love.
00:38 Before we begin, this video is for educational purposes only
00:41 and is not intended to be a substitute
00:43 for professional advice or diagnosis.
00:45 With that said, here is what happens
00:47 when a narcissist falls in love with you.
00:49 (gentle music)
00:52 Number one, they won't change.
01:02 You may think that when a narcissist truly falls in love,
01:06 they change for the better.
01:08 Unfortunately, in most situations, that is not the case.
01:11 Research shows that they have structural abnormalities
01:15 in brain regions associated with emotional empathy.
01:18 And because of that, they tend to turn abusive
01:20 or remain self-absorbed.
01:22 Number two, they're turbulent in their ways of affection.
01:27 Narcissists can be extremely warm one second
01:30 and cold the next.
01:31 It's also common for them to love bomb their partners.
01:35 Since they're playing a game of wanting to receive praise
01:38 and admiration, they know exactly which buttons to push
01:41 to elicit a good reaction.
01:43 However, since the act of receiving pleasure
01:45 is somewhat like a game to them,
01:47 they naturally lose interest once they win it
01:49 or receive the prize.
01:51 So it won't be a surprise when one moment
01:53 they're buying gifts and booking honeymoon tickets
01:56 for their partners and breaking up with them the next.
01:59 Number three, they prefer casual dating or long distance.
02:04 Commitment is a difficult thing to expect from narcissists.
02:07 Since they're sponges of attention,
02:09 a single person's appreciation will tire them out quickly.
02:13 For them, the more people to receive praise from,
02:16 the better.
02:17 This is why they're especially comfortable
02:19 with casual dating or being in long distance relationships.
02:22 In these types of setups,
02:23 there are low expectations for intimacy,
02:25 but enough opportunities to satisfy their desire.
02:29 Do any of these ring a bell so far?

02:44 Number four, they're passionate at first.
02:47 Narcissists are supposed to be vain, selfish people, right?
02:51 Well, while it's true
02:53 that a sense of entitlement characterizes them,
02:56 narcissists have also been proven
02:57 to possess emotional intelligence.
02:59 This means that they're highly capable
03:01 of showing their interest,
03:03 especially to gain what they want, adoration.
03:06 For this reason, they may act all lovey-dovey
03:08 during the early stages of a relationship.
03:11 They may be touchy, generous, dreamy,
03:14 and all the good things, but don't be fooled.
03:16 A narcissist's love also means
03:18 putting themselves first, always.
03:20 Number five, they won't know how to resolve conflicts.
03:24 Disagreements and arguments are common in relationships.
03:27 If handled well, they may even promote growth
03:30 and closeness between partners.
03:32 But since narcissists always want to seem perfect,
03:35 they tend to avoid things
03:36 that may make them seem like a bad person.
03:38 This means that when there's conflict,
03:40 they're highly expected to ship the blame,
03:42 point fingers, and use manipulation tactics
03:45 to get the upper hand.
03:47 And number six, they may commit narcissistic abuse.
03:51 Narcissistic abuse is defined as a type of emotional abuse
03:54 where the abuser only cares about themselves
03:57 and may use words and actions
03:59 to manipulate their partner's behavior and emotional state.
04:03 Since narcissists tend to see themselves
04:05 as superior beings,
04:06 they often forget about the needs of their partners.
04:10 They do everything for themselves first.
04:12 And this behavior can be especially damaging
04:14 to the person they're in a relationship with.
04:17 Victims of narcissistic abuse may experience anxiety,
04:20 depression, post-traumatic stress,
04:23 loss of self-worth, and more.
04:26 So did anyone come to mind when you heard these signs?
04:29 Narcissists can often make life difficult
04:31 for who they love and vice versa.
04:33 There isn't a cure for narcissistic personality disorder,
04:36 but therapy can help.
