00:00 on some of my responsibilities and just my overall
00:03 playmaking ability and just being more decisive.
00:08 So I feel like there's definitely room for improvement,
00:11 but I feel like I did okay.
00:13 - Was it a fumble?
00:14 - I think it was.
00:17 When I went back and watched the slow-mo,
00:18 my hand was on the top of the ball.
00:20 - Didn't it look like it was like a tie almost?
00:21 Like the tie, but the tie went to him, it felt like?
00:23 'Cause like you felt like the ball,
00:24 you had your hand on the ball, right?
00:26 - Yeah, my hand was on the ball before he,
00:28 I thought before he made a forward motion, but.
00:31 - What did the coaches say?
00:34 Did they agree with you?
00:35 Did they say anything about that play?
00:38 - They just said it's a game of inches
00:39 and to leave no doubt and be that much faster
00:44 the next time so that you don't have to go to review.
00:48 - Were you interested in seeing it on film?
00:50 'Cause what did it feel like in the moment?
00:52 - Yeah, in the moment, I thought I got it.
00:55 I definitely thought I punched it out.
00:57 But yeah, I was definitely interested to see what it was.
01:02 - Did you think you guys did a good job?
01:05 But like sometimes there's a big play like that
01:07 and a defense might like, after a play like that,
01:09 call doesn't go your way, might fold a little bit
01:11 in the second half, you guys pretty much,
01:13 again, held them just 13 in the second half.
01:14 Do you think you guys still responded well after that?
01:16 - Yeah, so I mean, our attitude is always, you know,
01:18 respond, whatever comes our way is what it is,
01:21 you know, good or bad, we're gonna play our defense
01:25 aggressive and decisive, so yeah,
01:27 I think we did a good job of that.
01:28 We let up more points than we obviously should have.
01:32 And yeah, I honestly think we could have held them
01:35 to probably zero, honestly.
01:37 It was just, yeah, some mistakes on our end.
01:41 - What was it like for you to kind of get back in a rhythm?
01:45 I mean, I think 61 steps is like a career high for you.
01:47 So I mean, like, I mean, you played a lot.
01:49 What did it feel like to kind of be in that flow?
01:52 - Yeah, it honestly didn't feel like that much.
01:56 I think I was just so locked into the game,
01:59 but my body definitely started feeling it second half.
02:03 My calf started cramping up real bad,
02:05 so I was on the sideline drinking pickle juice
02:07 and everything with sodium.
02:10 But no, it felt fine.
02:12 I think I was just locked in and on my job
02:14 and my assignment and, you know, trying to win.
02:17 - Does it ever feel like week one, just cramping,
02:21 is just no matter what anybody does,
02:23 cramping's more of an issue week one,
02:25 whether it's the heat or it's something's different
02:27 about games, it's just harder to avoid?
02:29 - I guess, I've never cramped before.
02:32 And I think this game, this past game,
02:36 it was probably one of the harder games that I played in.
02:39 And I guess like what you were saying,
02:40 the snap count was a tad high, I guess.
02:44 But it was honestly unexpected for me.
02:48 There were a few guys I think that started cramping,
02:51 but it wasn't super common.
02:54 - Did you ever have to drink the pickle juice before?
02:56 Did you ever have something to do with it?
02:57 - Oh yeah, every practice I drink pickle juice
02:59 and Pedialyte.
03:00 - You do?
03:01 - Yeah.
03:02 - And it works?
03:03 - Oh yeah, yeah, usually.
03:03 (laughing)
03:04 It was a hot one though, on Saturday.
03:06 - Was there anything about your, I guess,
03:09 entire defense's effort that surprised you on Saturday?
03:11 - I wouldn't say surprised because, I mean,
03:17 we've been crafting and working for eight months,
03:20 you know, since January when everybody got here.
03:22 But I think it was just kind of exciting to see us click
03:27 and have those flashes of really good defense.
03:31 So now I think the goal is just to be
03:34 that much more consistent week to week.
03:37 So that's our goal, just focusing on us
03:40 and being as good as we can be.
03:42 - Does it feel like there's as many new faces
03:43 on the defense as there are?
03:46 - I mean, being a new face, like, not really.
03:51 I think we've all kind of meshed pretty well.
03:53 We had a lot of time to get to know each other
03:56 and really build that bond.
03:59 So I wouldn't say it feels new.
04:02 It feels like we've been together
04:03 and we're clicking and communicating well, yeah.
04:07 - What were your impressions of how Aaron Casey played
04:08 when you watched the film?
04:09 Was that pretty good?
04:10 I mean, he looked like he was the most impactful guy
04:13 for you guys in terms of plays of it.
04:16 - Yeah, he's a very reliable tackler and just player.
04:20 He's very decisive.
04:22 And that's one thing that I'm trying to put into my game
04:25 is just going, just shooting it.
04:27 I'm trying to make the play.
04:29 But no, yeah, he's a great player.
04:32 He knows how to weave his way through the line
04:36 and get a piece of that ball carrier.
04:39 - How close are you with Nick Toomer?
04:40 - I'm pretty close with him.
04:41 He's a class below me, but coming from Stanford,
04:46 we're fairly close.
04:48 He had his group of guys, I had mine,
04:50 but we all kind of meshed together.
04:52 - Were there any sort of conversations between you two
04:54 when both of you guys decided to come here out of the portal?
04:56 - Yeah, so he actually was more decided on going
04:59 'cause he committed here out of high school, I think.
05:02 Or he was talking in Indiana out of high school.
05:05 So it was more so he knew he was coming here
05:09 and I was just kind of feeling it out.
05:11 But yeah, we definitely had a lot of conversations
05:13 about Coach Allen and just the school itself.
05:17 - I know he's playing behind you on game days,
05:19 but how would you kind of assess his performance?
05:22 - Oh, he's doing really well.
05:23 He's really being physical.
05:26 He's a long guy.
05:27 I think he held his own against Marvin Harrison also
05:30 and the rest of the receiving core there.
05:32 So I think he's doing a good job.
05:35 - What was the energy like on the sideline
05:39 when Philip made that interception?
05:40 - Oh man.
05:43 So he's been like our leading interception guy in practices.
05:48 So it's almost like, it was not expected,
05:53 but like, oh, there's Phil.
05:55 He's doing it in practice.
05:57 It just makes sense that it's gonna happen in the game.
06:00 So no, it was electric.
06:03 We were so excited.
06:05 Our takeaway bill from the McMahon family.
06:11 So it was awesome.
06:14 - Takeaway bill?
06:17 - Takeaway bill.
06:18 It's like a, so the McMahon family,
06:20 Declan McMahon, his grandfather is a part of WWE.
06:27 So they gifted us like a WWE takeaway bill
06:30 that we hold up for whoever makes the interception
06:34 and causes a forced fumble, stuff like that.
06:36 - Is it specifically IU branded?
06:39 - Yeah, it has like IU like stickers and decals stuff on it.
06:42 But yeah.
06:44 - When did they give that to you?
06:45 And when did that become the takeaway bill?
06:47 - So we just got that, it was for the start of the season.
06:51 So we got it a couple of weeks ago,
06:54 but we had been talking about it in all season
06:55 just to have something to hold and build energy off of.
07:00 - Seeing Philip grab that for the first time,
07:04 you know, what that looked like?
07:05 - Man, I was happy for him, you know,
07:07 'cause he does it so much in practice, you know,
07:10 he gets picks all the time in practice.
07:11 So I was happy to see that translate to the game.
07:15 - But you got robbed of it, right?
07:16 You should have had it, right?
07:17 - No, it's us.
07:19 He got it for us.
07:20 - But no, but for your forced fumble,
07:22 they took it, the refs took it away from you, right?
07:24 - Yeah, yeah.
07:25 I mean, yeah.
07:27 - Without a warrant.
07:28 - You were Aaron, point blank.
07:30 - So we had a debate about that.
07:31 It would be me.
07:34 It would be me because of the forcing of the ball out.
07:39 But I said, "Hey, but what if you were to like,
07:42 "pick that up and score a touchdown?"
07:44 He said, "Man, we'd both have to hold it up together then."
07:48 - Are you a big WWE fan?
07:50 - Nah, not really.
07:52 I never got into it as a kid.
07:54 - Does Vince have any plans to come to Bloomington?
07:56 - Sorry?
07:57 - Does Vince have any plans to come to Bloomington?
07:58 - Uh, I don't know.
08:00 I know Declan's dad has been here a couple times,
08:03 but I don't think his grandfather would.
08:05 - Does Philip get to keep the belt for the whole week now?
08:08 'Cause he's the only person.
08:09 - Nah, it's just takeaway by takeaway.
08:12 - Where's the belt stay during the week?
08:13 - I don't know.
08:14 It's probably locked up somewhere.
08:15 (laughing)
08:18 - Coach Allen talked about just,
08:21 he was proud of you guys in the red zone,
08:24 just kind of holding strong.
08:25 Just what's kind of the mentality required
08:27 to make some of those plays?
08:29 And I guess physically too,
08:31 how do you guys just kind of withstand those drives
08:34 and force field goals and stuff?
08:36 - Honestly, it's just a test of your manhood at that point.
08:40 It's like, nothing else matters right now.
08:43 I don't care how you feel, what's hurting.
08:45 It's like, you gonna let them score or keep them out.
08:48 So, it's just time to blow up.
08:52 - Anything else?
08:57 All right.
