00:02 Plans to build homes on a controversial contaminated housing site at a Derbyshire
00:07 village are set for their final approval. Avant Homes wants to build 200 houses on
00:12 land called Nether Farm in Somercoats, which has been the subject to extensive
00:16 legal battles and arguments over contamination. The developer is hoping to build a £47 million
00:22 housing development on the plot, despite the acknowledged need to build homes on suspended
00:26 floors using membranes which are able to stop harmful substances from getting into the properties.
00:31 This is because of the site's proximity to the historic toxic landfill site
00:37 LS01, among other landfills, from which contamination has been found to be leaching.
00:42 Earlier this year, residents claimed at a public council meeting that some people in Somercoats
00:48 were falling ill due to work on housing developments next to the landfill sites.
00:52 This included homes near to the Nether Farm site and also homes around the 180-home Stanley Street
00:58 site. Stanley Street received its reserve matters approval under delegated powers instead of via
01:05 the council planning committee in May. Now, Amber Valley Borough Council planners have recommended
01:10 that the plans are approved at a meeting on Monday, September 11th. In their report, officers
01:16 say "concerns with regard to contamination have been addressed as part of the outline planning
01:21 permission which includes a number of conditions which specifically deal with contamination.
01:26 However, some residents have dubbed the building of homes next to historic toxic landfill sites as
01:31 'lunacy' and 'absolute madness'". A car owned by Princess Anne for 35 years is taking pride of
01:39 place at a Derbyshire museum. The custom-built Midbridge Scimitar No. 5 has gone on display
01:45 at the Great British Car Journey attraction in Ambergate. Decorated in the bonnet is an emblem
01:50 of a silver female jockey on a horse, presented to the Princess Royal after her performance at
01:55 the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, where she competed on the late Queen Elizabeth's horse, Goodwill.
