Labour: Govt must take national security more seriously

  • last year
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has called for an “overall audit” of the UK’s relationship with China, after a parliamentary researcher was arrested on suspicion of spying for the country.

The Labour frontbencher said: “Clearly there are risks to our national security from China that are not being taken seriously enough … we have to cooperate with China on things like climate change but we also have to make sure that our national security is protected.” Report by Buseld. 00:00 These are really serious allegations about spying at the heart of our democracy.
00:05 The government set up a Defending Democracy Task Force after warnings were given by MI5
00:13 about the risks of political interference.
00:16 But it appears to have done really nothing in the time since it was set up.
00:20 I think that is a serious problem.
00:22 They do need to take issues around our national security much more seriously.
00:27 Clearly there are risks to our national security from China that are not being taken seriously
00:33 enough.
00:34 That includes issues around our critical national infrastructure as well as the kind of political
00:39 interference that we've seen being alleged in this recent case.
00:44 It's why we've called for an overall audit of our relations with China and a proper strategy
00:50 for the risks, the threats and the challenges to our national security from other states.
00:57 We have to cooperate with China on things like climate change but we also have to make
01:01 sure that our national security is protected.
01:03 It ought to be possible for the government to take a comprehensive approach.
