00:00 Good evening, both gentlemen.
00:03 We discussed the rules of wrestling.
00:04 We're just a club-bound fight this evening.
00:07 Your trunks are okay here.
00:08 Your trunks are okay here.
00:10 Unless you have any questions, let's touch clubs.
00:11 Best of luck. Let's get to work.
00:13 Time to get to work. Our first of four matchups
00:18 here on a Wednesday night on your boxing channel,
00:22 ProBoxTV.
00:23 Kelvin Davis and Derek Whitley.
00:27 One doc there, one doc there, okay?
00:30 You may go.
00:31 -Box, gentlemen. -Here we go!
00:33 It's time to fight.
00:35 Southpaw against Southpaw.
00:38 White trunks with the purple for Norfolk, Virginia's
00:42 Kelvin Davis, black and silver trunks
00:45 for Derek "Bad Boy" Whitley.
00:48 Both Southpaws and both good-sized welterweights.
00:51 I mean, even Whitley, who's 5'10" with a 74-inch reach,
00:54 that's tall and long for a welterweight.
00:58 Chris, top of the show, you talked about his father.
01:01 His father, Derek, never stopped
01:04 in over 50 professional fights,
01:07 52 to be exact, from 1995 to 2007.
01:12 His uncle and his father are twins.
01:15 Not the uncle here tonight.
01:17 Both utilized the moniker of "double impact."
01:23 And he's sporting the 413, representing his hometown.
01:27 [ Indistinct shouting ]
01:31 Davis with that quick double jab.
01:33 You know we saw guys from their body language as well,
01:35 the opponents, you know, if they're there
01:37 to just show up for a check or if they're there to fight.
01:39 You can see Willie, you know, in his stance
01:40 and his body language.
01:42 He's kind of -- You're gonna need to convince him
01:44 he doesn't belong in the ring with Davis,
01:45 'cause right now, you know, he's looking to hold his ground
01:47 a little bit, looking to sort of, you know,
01:49 create offense himself and trying to get in there.
01:50 You got to watch that head as well.
01:51 -Hey, sir, hey. -Yeah, you're right, champ.
01:54 I saw Whitney walking around campus today,
01:56 and I could tell he wasn't walking around
01:57 like he was an opponent. He's here to get the upset.
02:02 -And if he does indeed have his father's chin,
02:04 he's gonna be a tough out.
02:06 He may be a guy who can't be put out.
02:10 Round number one.
02:12 This one's scheduled for six.
02:15 -Southpaw versus southpaw.
02:17 -Kelvin doing a nice job controlling
02:18 the center of the ring, walking his man around.
02:21 He's trying to put Whitley on the ropes,
02:23 and Whitley's being smart,
02:24 not letting himself get pinned there.
02:28 -Davis with quick hands,
02:30 and he loves to utilize that left hook right on cue for me.
02:33 -I guess that's one way to get him on the ropes,
02:34 is to push him off. -Yeah, push him right off.
02:36 -He's being very physical right now,
02:38 and I was surprised at the weight.
02:40 You know, Kelvin came in well under the welterweight limit,
02:43 much closer to junior welterweight,
02:46 but it doesn't seem like the strength
02:47 is gonna be a problem.
02:48 -Yeah, based off that push-off, right?
02:50 Oh, good little counter right hand there.
02:52 -Nice shot that shook Whitley up.
02:54 -And I guess the cut was not existing, Chris.
02:56 So there's a bonus there, even though he is much lighter.
03:01 -Yeah, that overhand left might be an issue.
03:02 He's landed a couple of them.
03:03 That first one buzzed.
03:05 Whitley hit him behind the ear.
03:08 -Yeah, starting to land more consistently,
03:09 and I think Davis is starting to see the pattern here,
03:12 and we're gonna start to look for a little bit more,
03:14 see what kind of a jump there is in that one,
03:15 and see if Whitley's able to make any adjustments.
03:18 -You know, that's the thing, though.
03:19 You see, you don't normally --
03:21 You don't see two southpaws fight each other a lot,
03:23 so Whitley might not be used to punches coming from that angle.
03:25 They're used -- He's used to orthodox punches.
03:29 -Yep. -'Cause he's had no defense
03:30 for that left hand over the top.
03:31 -It's not over just for right-handers.
03:32 -You're right. -It's also over for southpaws
03:34 to fight southpaws. -Damn southpaws.
03:38 -Thank you.
03:41 -Get him out, please.
03:45 Hey, listen, same thing.
03:46 You come out there with that little rhythm,
03:48 that little bounce, then you're gonna know what to do.
03:50 Keep your jab in this hand. You got to keep your range, Joe,
03:53 to see how you're trying to come over the top.
03:55 You can take that half a step back
03:56 and come over the top of him, all right?
03:58 You got to make sure you keep your hands up and shit,
04:00 'cause he's ducking his head and just doing anything.
04:03 You want him to get lucky.
04:04 Don't give him no fucking confidence, all right?
04:07 -Hey, let's try to do you. -So do you.
04:10 -Back of the head. -Yeah.
04:11 But listen, I need you to do what you came here to do.
04:14 You feel me? Don't sit here and wait on this dude.
04:16 Please, use your hands, all right?
04:19 You got this all day. Let's do this.
04:21 -Calvin Davis has been training alongside Terrence Crawford
04:27 in Colorado Springs. -Second round, gentlemen.
04:29 -Talked a moment ago about that highly anticipated
04:33 and long-awaited matchup getting closer and closer
04:37 each and every day.
04:38 Round two, Calvin Davis in the white and purple,
04:41 Derek Whitley in the black and silver.
04:43 -I would imagine that Calvin Davis
04:44 would be a good sparring partner for Terrence Crawford
04:47 leading up to the Errol Spence fight.
04:48 He's a southpaw. He's tall. He's long.
04:50 He's physical, obviously.
04:51 -Both of these guys, as we talked about on set,
04:57 have a good family pedigree.
05:00 Calvin, the oldest of the DB3, younger brother,
05:03 24-year-old Olympian.
05:05 Keyshawn's 8-0 with six knockouts.
05:07 And their youngest brother, Keyon, is 21 years old.
05:14 -Derek Whitley's got uncles, brothers, dad.
05:18 Everybody seems to be in boxing.
05:19 His younger brother, Denzel,
05:22 also utilizes the double eye-pack.
05:25 -Let him go. Great gentleman.
05:28 -I need that rhythm. I need that rhythm.
05:31 -Yeah, Baumak is screaming about the rhythm.
05:32 He had mentioned that in between the corner,
05:34 in between rounds in the corner.
05:35 And you see that in Calvin Davis.
05:36 He's got that little bit of upper-body-shoulder rhythm,
05:38 which is hiding his first move.
05:40 And you can see Whitley is a little bit confused.
05:42 -Yeah, I was just gonna say, I see Whitley
05:43 almost not getting off.
05:45 He's trying to figure out how to get on the inside of Davis,
05:47 and he stopped punching, essentially.
05:50 I mean, his body language still shows you
05:51 that he's trying to fight, but he's a confused champ.
05:54 He doesn't understand how he's gonna figure out how to fight.
05:58 -He's reacting to feints, too.
05:59 Calvin Davis is there. There he is, exactly.
06:02 Right on cue.
06:04 I like how Calvin is keeping that rhythm on the outside.
06:10 He's being very physical when they do get close,
06:12 and he's staying very relaxed, not wasting any energy.
06:16 -Last time we saw him here on Pro Box TV, Chris,
06:20 he had multiple late opponent changes,
06:22 and he told us yesterday in the fighter meetings
06:24 that it took him a little while to find his comfort,
06:28 and then once he got into his groove,
06:30 he was able to finish that fight against Jalen Hill,
06:33 who was 5-0 at the time in the fourth round.
06:36 -Left hand again, Charles. -There it is.
06:37 -All right, let's break, gentlemen.
06:39 -He's dipping to his left side,
06:40 which is not gonna protect him from that hand.
06:42 -Mouthpiece coming up.
06:43 -And Calvin Davis does come up with a lock and lock,
06:46 and he does look once again to land that left hand.
06:51 -I like how Calvin's not allowing Winley to relax.
06:53 On the inside, he's being very physical.
06:55 He's pushing him, using his forearms.
06:57 -Yeah, keeping him uncomfortable.
07:00 -I mean, you got tough journeymen.
07:01 A lot of times, it's not even just hitting them with big shots.
07:04 It's just making them feel like they can't win.
07:06 -Yeah. -And you get the stoppages.
07:08 -And that's the thing.
07:09 And also, even the guys that you're maybe not gonna stop,
07:10 like Winley, losing the line, not the easiest guy to stop.
07:12 -Good body shot. Really good body shot.
07:14 -And down he goes.
07:18 -Four, five, six, seven, eight.
07:23 -That was the body shot that made him.
07:25 -You ready to go, son?
07:27 -And once again, you get southpaw, southpaw,
07:29 straight left hand to the liver, 'cause it's that right side.
07:32 That was a thudding shot. We could hear it ringside.
07:33 Couldn't see it from our angle, but I heard it.
07:36 -Oh, it was set up perfectly by all the work he did over the top
07:40 with that left hand previously.
07:42 -Winley's not gonna help his own cause with that mountain piece,
07:44 either.
07:45 -That's why you can't have a boiling bite from Modell's.
07:48 -Or maybe it is boiling.
07:50 Sometimes, when they don't --
07:53 When they don't fit, maybe they didn't boil it.
07:56 -Thank you.
07:58 -Can we take a look at that straight left hand
07:59 to the liver here?
08:00 Caballé steps in, and that's the thing.
08:03 When you get the southpaw, it's like southpaw, southpaw.
08:04 -And also, dude, when it rakes you, when it slides,
08:08 it's almost like a knife cutting through you.
08:09 -It hits that floating rib, and watch the slide.
08:12 -Oh, dude, I'm telling you. -That strafing shot.
08:14 -People at home are not gonna understand.
08:16 I'm telling you.
08:17 Take one of those from me.
08:18 You understand what I'm talking about.
08:19 It's worse.
08:21 -Work your way in with your hands like this.
08:22 Work your way in through them. You're staying back here.
08:24 Work your way in. Work your way in with your hands up.
08:26 -You yanked off your face. -You hear me?
08:29 Take that motherfucking thing and give him something.
08:30 And keep that mouthpiece bitten down on.
08:33 -Told me to make it bite, not lose the mouthpiece.
08:36 -Get yelled at.
08:37 -Models, man. You went old school there.
08:40 -Is that even a thing anymore? That's a New York thing.
08:43 -It is. But you do have to boil and bite.
08:45 -Have they gone out of business even in New York?
08:47 The one by my house in Brooklyn went out of business.
08:48 -I think they did go out of business.
08:50 I'm talking my age here.
08:51 -Perhaps Derek Whitley got the last mouthpiece from there.
08:53 -Dick's Sporting Goods. That's one that's still current.
08:55 -There you go. There you go.
08:56 -Now, reach. Now, reach.
08:58 Don't look down. Don't look down.
08:59 -Good start. Two rounds in.
09:01 Now round number three for 8-0 Kelvin Davis.
09:07 And he's going bodyhead with that lead jab again.
09:12 -Yeah, Whitley came out this round starting
09:14 a little more aggressive, trying to make something happen,
09:15 which actually might be to his detriment.
09:17 There's gonna be some more openings,
09:19 especially when you got a guy who's staying as comfortable
09:21 as Kelvin Davis is on the outside.
09:25 Nice short shot on the inside.
09:27 -And a good answer by Whitley, showing his aggression.
09:31 -He's trying. Not for lack of trying here.
09:33 Once he gets inside, he is trying,
09:35 but Davis really very correct, even on the inside,
09:39 taking away the space, and when he creates it,
09:41 it's Davis who gets off the floor with it.
09:43 -Not for nothing, those kind of body shots,
09:44 the one that dropped Whitley in that last round,
09:45 those stick with you a couple rounds.
09:47 -Yeah, yeah.
09:50 -And left hand still landing.
09:51 -It's 'cause of that dip. He keeps dipping to that left side,
09:53 where normally he would be safe against a righty.
09:55 He's not against a southpaw.
09:59 -And that's a great point, Chris,
10:00 'cause I was going to have you and Paulie kind of break down
10:04 why it is so difficult for a southpaw
10:06 to face another southpaw,
10:08 and you just brought up a great point.
10:09 You're used to leaning one way to slip,
10:11 and you slip against another southpaw and get hit.
10:14 -Yeah, I mean, it's like the champ said last,
10:16 that first round, it's like, hey, fighting southpaws
10:18 is hard for southpaws, as well.
10:21 Punches come from different angles.
10:23 -Round number three, our first fight of the night,
10:29 and a good combination by Whitley.
10:31 -See, this is where Whitley needs to work.
10:32 He got the position.
10:34 He's got Kelvin backed up on the ropes.
10:36 He's got to let his hands go on the inside.
10:37 -Yeah, David's got to be careful.
10:38 He kind of got a hippy hop almost too relaxed there
10:41 and allowed Whitley to get off those shots.
10:43 He's got to keep himself stable.
10:46 -There's that shot again.
10:47 Nice, beautiful left hand down low.
10:48 -Nice, the way he decoyed it, too.
10:50 I mean, he kept his eyes on Whitley's head
10:53 and then dropped that body shot down low
10:55 sort of to distract and make it unreadable.
10:59 -That's a great point, Champ.
11:00 A lot of people don't realize the eye fake.
11:02 We look up, shoot down, shoot down,
11:03 look up -- or look down, shoot up.
11:07 -Good battle inside fighting answered by Whitley.
11:11 Final 30 seconds of round number three.
11:15 -Whitley trying to fight, but he's walking around
11:16 with his mouth open now, almost looks a little tired.
11:18 Maybe, again, like you said, Champ,
11:19 that body shot that sticks with you.
11:21 -Oh! -That left --
11:22 Those left hands will stick with you, too,
11:23 if you keep pointing those.
11:25 -And that was a good read by Davis.
11:27 As Whitley went to that left side,
11:31 his right side, to his left hand,
11:32 he fired right over the top.
11:35 -Whitley's got to start trying to get on first.
11:36 He's going to be winding himself up,
11:38 trying to get himself tracked.
11:39 -Hey, hey, hey, hey, fellas.
11:40 -Referee Del Bianco's having a hard time
11:41 staying out of the way tonight.
11:42 -Yeah, he got blocked a few times.
11:45 -It's 'cause he's reffing the southpaw
11:46 against southpaw, Paulie.
11:48 -It's awkward for the ref, too.
11:49 -It is awkward for the guy.

13:17 you can see he's starting to get the timing on him more and more,

13:28 in that Whitley's crafty and tough enough
13:31 to give Davis some problems, but not good enough to beat him,
13:34 and at the same time, show if Davis is maturing
13:37 and then showing any poise in his development.

13:42 he's figured out Whitley more and more and more,
