00:00 - All right, guys, we went over the instructions
00:01 in the dressing room.
00:02 Any punches that land here will be considered a low blow.
00:05 Anything here will be a low blow.
00:07 I want you to obey my commands
00:08 and give me a good, clean fight.
00:09 Let's touch 'em up. Scoot back.
00:11 - Good luck.
00:13 - Charlie Sheehy coming off the longest outing in his career,
00:16 a unanimous decision in six rounds
00:18 over Angel Revoyar on March 25th,
00:21 while his opponent, Kalen Alfred,
00:23 while six of his ten opponents were unbeaten
00:25 with a record of 33-0 and three.
00:27 Tim, no easy task for Alfred again,
00:31 taking on Charlie Sheehy.
00:32 - Yeah, that's what happens when you don't have a promoter
00:34 backing you and, you know, you just gotta get in there
00:36 and take risks and hope you can deliver
00:39 a spectacular either win against a quality opponent
00:42 and hopefully you can get signed afterwards.
00:44 But Sheehy is no slouch.
00:46 You know, as you can see, very schooled,
00:48 coming out very stable, balanced, well-balanced,
00:51 got a good jab, sharp jab,
00:54 but he's getting off to work and getting started quickly
00:57 in this match right now.
00:58 - Ooh, that short left hook to the chin.
01:00 Alfred was able to deflect it partially,
01:03 but some of it did get home
01:04 and you just see the power of Sheehy as well.
01:07 You don't win 17 amateur titles without skill
01:10 and when you add some pop to that,
01:12 like Sheehy has with four knockouts
01:14 and six professional wins,
01:15 then you see why top rank is so high on this young man.
01:19 - See, I'm seeing a difference already in Sheehy.
01:22 You know, usually he likes to fight
01:23 mainly off the back foot
01:24 and he looks to be a counter puncher,
01:25 but in this matchup right here,
01:29 he's on the front foot,
01:30 so I'm sure this is something
01:31 that he's been working on in the gym.
01:33 - Yes, with Javier Centeno,
01:35 he's a stable mate of Xander Zayas
01:37 and he sees how much love Xander gets for his style
01:40 and I'm sure he wants to get some of that as well.
01:43 So the evolution of a fighter is what you love to see,
01:46 especially in his seventh professional fight.
01:48 - Yeah, it's so interesting you say that
01:50 because my trainer, Juaul Diaz,
01:54 you know, I came out of the amateurs,
01:55 I had a boxing style, you know,
01:57 a lot of flash, quick combinations,
02:00 but he said, "Tim, that's boring.
02:02 "People don't want to see that.
02:03 "If you want to sell tickets
02:06 "and you want people to come and watch you fight,
02:09 "you have to get a little bit more aggressive
02:11 "with your offense."
02:12 - And eventually, it would give us the Ruzlan Provodnikov fight,
02:15 the Manny Pacquiao fight.
02:17 - Yes, he knew a little something.
02:20 - Oh, nice right, but then once again,
02:22 he gets clipped by a left counter from Alfred,
02:24 who's dangerous in the ring.
02:27 - That's two, that's two this round,
02:31 and that's two too many.
02:33 The first one you got me, okay.
02:35 The second one, ah, something is wrong.
02:37 I think what it is is that Alfred, his is shorter.
02:41 His punches are shorter, right to the point.
02:43 His left hook is shorter,
02:45 whereas she is coming out a little bit wide with his.
02:47 - He's in the southpaw stance.
02:50 - And that's part of the risk you take, right?
02:52 When you're a counter puncher, a boxer,
02:54 and all of a sudden you want to be on that front foot,
02:56 there's going to be fire coming back at you.
02:58 - Yes.
02:59 - But that's a nice combination.
03:00 Instead of a one-two,
03:01 it's a two-one with that lead right,
03:03 followed up by the jab,
03:04 sets up a left hook from Charlie Sheehy.
03:06 - Sheehy just has to make sure
03:09 when he drops that right hand or throws the left hook,
03:12 he needs to hold that phone.
03:14 - 10 seconds.
03:16 - Keep that right hand at bay, on that chin.
03:19 - And entertaining first round from Charlie Sheehy.
03:22 We'll see if his trainer, Javier Centeno,
03:24 was as entertained as we were.
03:26 (crowd cheering)
03:29 - I want you to continue.
03:31 Nice deep breaths.
03:34 I want you to continue establishing that jab, right?
03:36 Don't get off that.
03:37 But look, don't throw the jab
03:38 and not move that head off it, right?
03:39 Okay?
03:40 So get that head moving.
03:41 Every time you throw a combination,
03:43 I want that head to be off that jab.
03:45 As you're kind of sticking in the middle
03:46 a little bit too long, okay?
03:48 Okay?
03:49 Deep breaths, deep breaths.
03:53 When you faint and you see that he drops,
03:59 drop that right hand, bring that left hook around.
04:01 Okay?
04:02 Left hook, right hand, real quick.
04:03 Okay?
04:04 Nice and deep.
04:05 Your body's sharp, don't hurt.
04:10 Nice and deep.
04:11 Give me two more.
04:12 That's it, good round, okay?
04:17 (crowd cheering)
04:19 - All right, Charlie G,
04:22 getting good instructions from Javier Centeno.
04:24 Wants him on that stick, off the line.
04:28 And defensively, he's gotta be careful
04:30 because Alfred's coming out swinging here in round two.
04:32 - Yeah, Alfred did a good job in prolonging that round.
04:37 I mean, he was buzzed for a split second
04:40 and you saw him step back,
04:42 resulted in what he's been training,
04:44 you know, what he's been doing inside the gym.
04:45 And you see, he got space,
04:47 he allowed himself to recover,
04:49 and now he's out feeling confident,
04:51 coming right back, trying to get into this fight.
04:53 - We talk about being match tough,
04:55 and Kalen Alfred, well,
04:57 he's got a loss against O'Shaqie Foster,
05:00 a four round majority decision.
05:02 O'Shaqie is now the WBC 130 pound champion.
05:06 Elvis Rodriguez also stopped Kalen Alfred,
05:09 dropping him twice en route to a six round stoppage
05:12 early in his career.
05:13 So, I mean, he's been in with some punchers.
05:15 - Oh yeah, he's been in with punchers.
05:17 He definitely knows what he has to do
05:18 and he's serving himself well.
05:19 I mean, he got a good looking style,
05:22 you know, not flat footed, likes to get on his toes,
05:24 likes to attack, explode with combinations and spots.
05:28 As you know, we saw, he has a good left hook,
05:31 shortens it up, and he can switch.
05:33 There's a lot to like about Alfred.
05:35 - He's so quick to counter as Alfred
05:42 and that's why she's gotta be careful.
05:44 - And there he takes the lead with the one, two.
05:46 - See, but that jab of Sheehy's gonna become problematic
05:51 because it's throwing off the rhythm of Alfred.
05:55 You know, anytime you get hit in the face with a jab,
05:58 whatever you were thinking, it's no longer there.
06:00 But nice left hook and counter again.
06:03 It looked like it was partially blocked for a split second.
06:06 I thought it was partially blocked or it might've landed,
06:08 but I think it was partially blocked.
06:09 - I think it goes back to the same thing
06:11 you said about Charlie Sheehy.
06:13 It's about picking up the phone
06:14 and making sure that hand is protecting the chin
06:17 because you see the quickness with which Alfred responds
06:21 every time he sees an opening.
06:23 And Sheehy's left hand is way down.
06:26 There's a nice right handle from Sheehy
06:30 right on the chin. - That's a good body shot.
06:31 That's a good body shot by Sheehy.
06:32 Right hand down to the body.
06:34 - And you see how Alfred immediately starts to hold.
06:37 - But see, that's experience.
06:39 You know, if you don't fight tough competition out there,
06:41 you don't know how to deal with it.
06:44 You know, he understands what's going on right now.
06:45 He's been here before and I'm talking about Alfred here.
06:48 - Nice uppercut from Sheehy.
06:51 Now he's chopping down on those right hands
06:53 as he sees Alfred duck down.
06:56 Trying to punish Alfred here
07:00 as round two is into his last 22 seconds.
07:04 - I like this aggressive style from Sheehy.
07:06 A lot more entertaining than off his back foot.
07:09 I like the fact he's stocking.
07:10 He's keeping control of distance.
07:13 He's fighting when he wants to fight
07:15 and everything is off that stick.
07:17 - And Sheehy has shown power late in his fights.
07:19 Four knockouts and six professional wins.
07:21 And this is what he had to say
07:23 about what made him fall in love with the sport of boxing.
07:25 (crowd cheering)
07:28 - I've always loved competition and like winning.
07:35 And boxing just gave me a way to bring that out
07:39 and bring it to a different level.
07:41 I knew I fell in love with boxing
07:43 when I won my first championship belt
07:47 when I was nine years old.
07:48 Coming up in the gym and seeing all the pictures
07:50 on the wall of everyone holding a belt
07:53 so that I actually have a belt in my hand
07:57 and get to raise it to all the fans in the crowd
08:01 just gave me a feeling that I can't get anywhere else.
08:05 Feeling like no other one.
08:07 When you hit somebody and watch them fall on the ground.
08:10 Tonight I will get some knockdowns.
08:13 - Seconds out.
08:16 - Sheehy told us, "I've got that combative blood.
08:18 I'm part Irish, Italian, and Filipino."
08:21 And he recalled the first time he lost an amateur bout.
08:24 His first fight ever, he was a bloody mess
08:26 and he didn't want to take his gear off.
08:27 He just loved that moment.
08:29 Was relishing, even though he lost.
08:31 Just like there's something about being in gear
08:33 and bloodied up.
08:34 And here he is as a pro looking
08:35 for his seventh professional win.
08:37 Ooh, what a left hook!
08:41 And now it's night-night for Alfred on that bottom rope.
08:44 Shake it off.
08:46 - Six, seven, eight, nine.
08:50 Come to me, come to me.
08:51 You want to continue?
08:53 You want to continue?
08:54 - No, the fight is over.
08:56 What an impressive one punch knockout
08:59 for Charlie Sheehy here in the third round
09:03 against Kalen Alfred.
09:05 - He set up a left hook and it was vicious.
09:07 - Oh my goodness.
09:10 Wow.
09:12 - That is his fifth knockout in seven professional wins.
09:19 And it was a one hitter quitter.
09:21 - That was spectacular.
09:22 - It was.
09:23 - That was so timed, well placed.
09:26 Right between the guards of Alfred.
09:30 Catching him right on the money.
09:31 Like, the only way you can set up a lead left hook
09:35 is by getting him used to the jab first.
09:38 You get him used to the jab,
09:39 so when the hook comes out,
09:41 it looks like a jab, but it's not a jab.
09:43 You turn it and it surprises him.
09:45 And that's the reason why it had that much effect on him.
09:48 I mean, he didn't see it coming.
09:49 Never saw, he thought it was a jab.
09:52 Never saw it coming.
09:53 - I mean, the speed, power, and precision
09:55 of that shot is exactly how this fight
09:59 came to a conclusion in round number three.
10:01 - Oh, see?
10:03 See the reaction from Alfred?
10:04 Did you see the reaction?
10:05 He thought a jab was coming.
10:07 Check it out, look at the reaction.
10:10 Look at the, look at, you see the hand come forward?
10:11 - Yep.
10:12 - He wants to parry the jab.
10:15 That's what he was trying to do.
10:16 He was trying to parry the jab.
10:18 Left himself completely open.
10:20 Wow, what a shot.
10:25 What a change up.
10:26 What a change up.
10:27 You're shooting a jab, you're shooting a jab,
10:29 and then just that spectacular change up,
10:31 catching him off guard, never saw it coming.
10:33 - And when referee Robert Hoyle,
10:35 who gave him every opportunity to get up,
10:37 and even though he had shaky legs,
10:39 still asked him, "Do you want to continue?"
10:41 When you see a fighter shake his head
10:43 like Kalen Alfred did, it's because he knew
10:47 that he didn't, had no idea he was in Vegas.
10:50 - No, he didn't know he was in Vegas.
10:51 No, I'm sure if you ask him right now where you at,
10:53 he probably don't know.
10:54 You know, that was a big shot.
10:55 That was a surprising shot.
10:59 - We talked about, whenever we get a young fighter
11:02 who we've seen from his pro debut on,
11:04 it's about progression.
11:06 Tonight, the growth that Charlie Sheehy showed,
11:09 what do you take away from it?
11:12 - Spectacular.
11:12 The preparation and everything he's been doing in the gym,
11:15 it worked out well.
11:17 It's worked out well, and tonight it shows.
11:20 - Well, seventh victory as a pro,
11:23 Mark Chinook with the official time.
11:25 - Ladies and gentlemen, here inside
11:26 the Pearl Concert Theater at the legendary
11:29 Palms Casino Resort Hotel.
11:31 This bout comes to a conclusion at 31 seconds
11:34 of round number three.
11:36 For your winner by technical knockout,
11:39 Charlie Sheehy!
11:40 - 31 seconds into that round,
11:48 goodnight says Charlie Sheehy,
11:50 and he gets things started with this.
