00:26nicaraguan darwin martinez yeah we've seen martinez many times and we know he's a tough

00:33fella i think this is his sixth contest this year so he's he's always in the ring always boxing

00:40boxers regular and that's why he gives good account of himself and again another one of

00:45these tough journeymen fledge charlie hickford in the blue and white chunks the all blue

00:51predominantly blue for the man from nicaragua as richie says he doesn't duck anyone martinez

00:57this year alone he's been in with jack bates and andrew kane and jack turner and it took

01:03kane four rounds to stop him here in april this is a four-rounder if hickford could do anything

01:11spectacular here tonight then it would send a bit of a message wouldn't it richie at this stage he

01:15took turn of the distance and he'd been knocking everybody out yes he has indeed and this is a

01:20good start for young kickford here boxing really really well making his opponent miss he's scoring

01:28well on that front foot just gets cool with the shot there so that's a wake-up call for him but

01:34nevertheless up until that point yeah he's been out boxing um martinez we know what martinez is

01:41all about fletcher now tough he is he can be extremely game when he gets up close he's very

01:48dangerous and keeping that guard nice and high just edging closer trying to get forward trying

01:53to get up close to hickford who's picking him up at this stage good boxing from hickford at range

02:00can he keep it going hickford's won both fights so far as a professional one stoppage this is fight

02:07number 33 for the nicaraguan he's been beaten 22 times but as richie says he does tend to give a

02:14good account of himself in there and he's come out with decent intentions here martinez

02:20in the first round he's been nice and lively in there with a minute to go he just got caught with

02:23a super right hand there from hickford probably the best shot of the round so far well-timed shot

02:29bringing martinez onto that punch but martinez we know he's very strong and capable up close

02:37flex short and mid-range he's a real handful so your best boxing mid to long don't let him come

02:44over that front foot and get too close to you keep him at bay boxing at mid and long where he

02:49struggles a little bit but when he's up close it's a different catfish he's lost his last 12

02:56martinez but he's having a go in there his last two stoppage defeats have both been here at

03:01york hall the one against andrew kane in february and against chris bork 19 months ago so he's

03:07hoping to avoid his own personal york hall curse tonight and charlie hickford in there

03:13looking to try and give himself a nice confidence boosting win early in his career really good shot

03:18right at the end of the round caught in flush martinez who did respond well though

04:24it was a bit of a tear up in the opening round they might want a bit more control over things

04:28in the second rich yes and the situation here pledges well you have to counter-attack against

04:34an opponent like this beat him to the shot because if you allow him to come forward that's when

04:38that's when he's going to cause you problems so just break the attack up straight away get

04:43your timing right as he's about to launch the attack beat him to the shot and keep him on the

04:48end of it and keep him at distance if you allow him to get close that's when look at this there

04:53that was a cracking shot there from martinez he's dangerous when he gets up up close mid to short

04:59range there are one or two warning signs in there from the nicaraguan but the classy work in the

05:05first round did come from charlie hickford bj pollard on debut here last november then stopped

05:12yin kai sado at the copper box in february he's a really really good amateur and he's now keen to

05:18get on with it now he's being paid for his work yeah hickford's starting to get into his rhythm

05:23and now fetch but at the start this round he started a little bit too slow

05:28and he allowed martinez to come and to beat him to the shot with the odd right hand here and there

05:33so gotta listen to his corner his corner said use the jab a little bit more and that's what he's got

05:38to do he's got to be a little bit more busy here and keep his opponents off balance and don't let

05:43him close that gap down so far it's been a typical darwin martinez performance he makes you earn your

05:50victory doesn't win many himself but if you're going to beat him you're going to earn it and

05:54that's the case for hickford here in the second round halfway through it this one scheduled for

05:58four at featherweight there you go that's better just get into a rhythm of working behind that lead

06:04hand keeping him off balance and then he'll come on to the shots you don't want to be waiting too

06:08long though for him to set with a single shot that's what you don't want to be doing also

06:13hickford's probably got to keep his hands a little bit higher especially after his punch fletch when

06:18he's landed good shots he's can be a little bit vulnerable because he doesn't get his hands

06:22back to the on guard position he's got to get his hands a little bit higher after he's landed the

06:26shot

06:40i think they're getting the better of it in a good body shot behind the elbow of martinez

06:45and he throws him back towards the ropes hickford certainly has more success richie when he keeps it

06:50at range like this and throws those long straight shots absolutely you see martinez cut struggles

06:57because he can't get to him when he's up close there though it's a different different ball game

07:02short to mid he's wild and you know he's reckless and anything can happen with martinez that's why

07:08you've got to keep him at bay keep him in long range and charlie needs to be classy martinez

07:14will have a swing up with anybody we know that from past experience good shot from hickford again

07:20does his best work again in the final few seconds of the round landing a really solid shot just

08:11charlie hickford that was right at the start of the round because he's waiting a little bit too long

08:15he gets caught a couple of times but then he got into a rhythm and he boxed much better throughout

08:20the round but that was good work for martinez once in the family charlie hickford's dad steve was a

08:26professional they had a gym in the house when he was a kid so i suppose it was inevitable

08:31that he followed the path he says he wants to entertain and hopes to put on a show tonight

08:36we can't get too close to this man from nicaragua who always shows a great appetite for work when

08:41he's here in british rings good start to the round over here from hickford and he's got martinez

08:47trapped in his own corner and he's letting the hands go but martinez quite quite like that and

08:53he'll have a swing back as well yeah good start to the round from hickford quality work from him

08:58really going for it just got to watch martinez doesn't come back with those wild swings but

09:04nevertheless positive stuff from hickford but like i say fletch i'd like to just see this type

09:10of work mid and long keep him on the end of those long straight shots got his hands dangling by his

09:17side as well which if he lets martinez get too close could be a dangerous tactic that's a really

09:22good right hand though isn't it yeah beautiful work at range good shots there you go that might

09:27just have stiffened the legs of martinez and the follow-up left hand did some damage as well

09:32really good round for hickford still a lot of time in the round as well you know he's tough though

09:39martinez but nevertheless a good star for me for these are quality shots that are going in

09:46and martinez most certainly he's feeling it now just goes over a little walk about there just to

09:51buy himself a little bit of time but the straight more direct punches are from hickford and those

09:57quality shots are certainly taking their toll on martinez and he's just gone through the gears here

10:02in the third hasn't he charlie hickwood started it really quickly landed some good shots early

10:07and he's kept the pressure on relentlessly and this has been a very very difficult round

10:12a testing and taxing round for darwin martinez the best work we've seen in the fight so far

10:18from the 22 year old classy charlie hickford and he's picking his shots really well yeah oh there

10:23was a lovely body shot went in there flex he really felt that in martinez but yeah the quality

10:28and the accuracy in the work from hickford this round has been very good indeed and as i say that

10:34he walks onto a shot himself but nevertheless quality and accuracy from hickford i think it's

10:40inevitable you're always going to take a few from martinez and he's having to grit his teeth and

10:44bite down on the gum shield here in the face of this real barrage from hickford in round three

10:50yeah good switch of attack there from hickford went to the body with the left hook then he

10:54switched upstairs with better work again lovely work there from hickford those straight shots

11:00through the guard are excellent from hickford and they really do damage still he comes back

11:06though martinez he's such a difficult man to discourage yeah but just just gotta watch what

11:10he's doing occasionally he just missed the target there and then martinez just reminded him that he's

11:16still in it still game enough to throw those those wild shots and um he's still in there

11:24good round though for hickford that's really good really really good the best we've seen from him

11:30so far tonight there was even the old sugar ray leonard stick out the chin towards the end of the

11:34round rich absolutely he's had everything this did this round some real good work here from hickford

11:41keep his man on the ropes there martinez still punching away but it was the accuracy in the

11:46work from hickford in this round i thought was very good indeed he just took it up a notch here

11:52did hickford there's that sweeping shot downstairs that he really felt martinez and hickford finished

12:00the round strong as well three punch combo there that went in all it in the target so there was

12:06some excellent stuff in there from hickford in that room we've got the punk stats in front of us

12:12he's throwing a high number of shots i mean he's worked right hickford has been extremely high he's

12:17been pretty accurate with them as well and we'll find out now whether he can get the stoppage

12:23final round fourth round here at york hall and just to kind of emphasize the durability of martinez

12:29he took massoud abdul at the distance back in 2022 he's fighting for the commonwealth title

12:35tonight he also lost on points for the reigning british middleweight champion brad pauls who had

12:40two up and downers with nathan heaney so he's been in with good people who couldn't get him

12:44out of there so he's not an easy man to move by any stretch of the imagination and he's used to

12:50boxing people at higher weights as well i've let you know brad paul's um so yes he's a tough he's

12:58a tough kid indeed martinez and up to now i think hickford's box very well indeed obviously you'll

13:04try and put the icing on the cake and get the stoppage but just got to do it sensibly and with

13:10the quality it detonates the first big one of round four charlie hickford

13:20you see just got caught there with a shot so that was a good punch there for martinez

13:26and hickford again he noses in with a real tough customer here who's still dangerous in this final

13:33round tell you what's interesting richie looks like a bit of a swinger in there doesn't he

13:36martinez but he's very accurate with his punches he's actually landed a higher percentage of

13:42punches than charlie hickford so the style looks a little bit ungainly at times but it works for

13:47him absolutely and you know if you allow him to get up close to you then anything can happen

13:53he's he's strong he's tough he's unpredictable he's martinez and dangerous get the impression

14:02though that hickford's really enjoyed himself in there tonight certainly looks that way can he

14:07finish it off in spectacular style a little bit more than a minute to go in the final round

14:13a quieter round this one than the third where hickford was almost constantly forcing martinez

14:19backwards it's just a little bit of a swelling on the right cheek of hickford as well from

14:26one of those swinging shots that martinez has landed yeah i mean he's taken a couple of good

14:29shots himself um as hickford oh he got caught there got caught with a punch yeah and you can

14:36tell they're just grabbing martinez there so he just felt that one martinez looks absolutely

14:51shattered he is yet he can call with some big shots and that's wore him down a little bit but

14:56he's still dangerous fletch as we've seen just earlier the court hickford with a good punch there

15:05so it's been a good learning contest in against a dangerous man indeed martinez just got that

15:12swinging left through again and now it's hickford's turn to feel his back against the rogues final 10

15:17seconds but a really good fight this really good to watch the crowd inside york hall have thoroughly

15:22enjoyed it and both of them still going look at martinez has taken some big shots he's throwing

15:27right to the end the respect between the pair of them and both of them had a right good going there

15:32richie yeah tremendous wasn't it that last round because we all thought that hickford might just

15:37pour the pressure on but he got caught with a couple of good shots in that round so you have

15:41to readjust and rethink a little bit so it's been a good decent workout for him i thought the first

15:46three rounds he was excellent he's in against an awkward dangerous opponent and in that last round

15:52you know martinez showed that so that's a good workout for hickford

16:01so we'll get the official results shortly but there's the man who's top of the bill tonight

16:06sam noakes the unbeaten european british and commonwealth lightweight champion and he's

16:13defending his european belt tonight against jan luka shaglia from campania in italy a little

16:19bit later on and he's here as well don't let the union flag on the front of the hoodie fool you

16:25he's italian through and through wants to take the belt back there against sam noakes this evening

17:08martinez had a fairly decent round caught his opponent with a couple of good shots but overall

17:12i was pleased with hickford showed some really classy signs there he's a very good boxer indeed
