00:00 And last night he was off on some throws.
00:02 Let's have a listen to Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the 49ers, on his assessment of Brock
00:07 Purdy from start to finish last night.
00:11 Slow start, got it done.
00:12 Let's hear what Shanahan thought.
00:14 Yeah, you know, he missed a couple today and guys made a couple of real good catches also.
00:18 I mean, I thought it was just a huge challenge.
00:21 One of the biggest ones Brock's been in just to, you know, the short week to prepare for
00:24 a scheme like that.
00:26 Just how much they do with, you know, they had six guys on the line of scrimmage throughout
00:29 the game.
00:30 Half the time they're coming, half the time they're not.
00:33 There's not a comfortable play throughout a game, you know, from a play call standpoint
00:38 and from the quarterback just because there's a lot of plays that don't work versus that.
00:42 And so you've got to constantly be looking at it and sometimes they do, sometimes they
00:45 don't, which is a huge challenge for a quarterback.
00:48 And I thought he settled down throughout it as the game went and ended up playing good
00:52 enough for us to win.
00:56 He had over 300 yards passing for the first time in a regular season game, 310 on 37 throws
01:02 and 25 completions.
01:03 I was surprised by this stat.
01:06 He dropped back to pass 39 times, Peter.
01:09 The Giants blitzed 33.
01:12 According to NextGenStats, as far back as they go, that's the most any defense has ever
01:17 blitzed in any game.
01:19 33 out of 39 snaps.
01:23 Wow.
01:26 That's amazing.
01:27 Well, you know, when I see that, Mike, and first of all, I have great respect.
01:32 I work with the people from NextGenStats and they are really terrific.
01:37 But that surprises me.
01:39 It didn't seem like that last night.
01:42 And maybe that's a fairly good sign that the 49ers were blocking them up for much of the
01:47 night.
01:48 But I think I would just say this.
01:52 I've noticed this about, in particular, about Brock Purdy.
01:59 And that is, you know how in the NFL, it's either, Bill Parcells once coined this phrase,
02:07 he said, "I try to stay off the roller coaster because with you guys," meaning the media,
02:13 "every week it's either euphoria or disaster."
02:17 And you almost notice it now, not week by week, but series by series.
02:26 You know, if you were on social media last night, which I was occasionally, monitoring
02:31 the game and watching the game, doing the second screen, I mean, the level of angst
02:39 and worry about Brock Purdy.
02:40 I mean, look, he threw two touchdown passes that were beautiful throws just dropped in
02:48 a bucket.
02:50 You know, one to Deebo and one to the young guy number 10.
02:53 I'm sorry, I forget his name.
02:55 But one to number 10 at the front, yeah, at the front pylon on the left side was absolutely
03:03 fantastic.
03:05 Two great throws.
03:06 And yet, all I'm hearing, all I'm reading, "Oh boy, Brock Purdy, he's sketchy.
03:15 I don't know about Brock Purdy."
03:17 Listen, all I know is this.
03:21 Brock Purdy has played over three quarters in 11 football games in his NFL career.
03:30 And he's 11-0.
03:32 So I understand people are hesitant and people are not sure about Brock Purdy, and I get
03:40 it, and he does need to continue to prove himself.
03:44 But I think it's ridiculous the amount of skepticism week to week.
03:50 "Well, I still don't know.
03:52 Last pick in the draft."
03:53 Watch the games.
03:56 And yes, he missed some throws last night.
03:58 Some very hittable throws.
04:02 And again, that's what happens with quarterbacks sometimes.
04:05 It really does, and you know that.
04:07 So I guess the way I look at this, Mike, is I think the 49ers are in great shape with
04:13 Brock Purdy.
04:14 Fantastic shape.
04:16 And for those who would say, "Well, he got hurt last year."
04:19 You know, got hurt on a fluky play.
04:22 Hurt his elbow.
04:23 That's the way life goes.
04:25 He played 47 games in a Power 5 conference where the vast majority of those games, the
04:34 talent on the defensive side of the ball was better than their talent at Iowa State.
04:41 So I guess the way I look at this is, I know everybody wants to keep saying, "Well, this
04:46 is a big test for Brock Purdy.
04:48 That's a big test."
04:50 What test hasn't he passed?
04:52 Other than hurting his elbow against the Philadelphia Eagles.
04:59 So I'm not worried about Brock Purdy at all.
05:05 I have three points to make, and I will make them as succinctly as I can.
05:08 First of all, as to the elbow injury and ensuing surgery, and I believe I echo a comment that
05:14 was made by Al Michaels after Amazon showed the very graphic graphic of the surgical procedure
05:21 where the incision in the elbow and the opening of the body.
05:25 Please give someone a warning.
05:27 Some of us are eating food while we're watching the game, and we don't need to see a video
05:33 depiction of someone's arm being sliced and opened so we can see what's inside.
05:40 Thank you very much.
05:41 Some of us were eating chicken wings last night, and it's a little bit too graphic on
05:46 the graphic when you're eating chicken wings and things are being cut open and we're seeing
05:50 bones and tendons and stuff.
05:52 Second, there's this vibe around the 49ers quarterbacks, and it's just dumb luck, but
05:59 they feel cursed.
06:00 So I think if I'm a 49ers fan, I'm always worried about something because something
06:05 always happens with a quarterback, whether it's an injury or whether it's a fluky thing
06:10 in the worst possible moment.
06:12 And with Purdy, we saw it last year.
06:14 Everything was great.
06:15 Everything was great.
06:16 Oh, okay.
06:17 Purdy, QB3.
06:18 Hey, he's winning games, and here we go.
06:19 We're in the NFC Championship, and my God, we can actually beat the Eagles, and boom,
06:22 there it is.
06:23 So I feel like they're always holding their breath a little bit.
06:26 I think the 49ers, Peter, are the ultimate hold your breath team for the reasons we've
06:31 already discussed with these ultra-violent runs where you're fighting and scratching
06:36 and clawing, and you just are going to get hurt at some point.
06:40 And then you've got a quarterback issue, and when's he going to get injured?
06:42 Because they always seem to get injured.
06:44 And you're constantly, if you're a 49ers fan, everything's great, and you're constantly
06:48 holding your breath for what's going to come next.
06:49 And the last point is this.
06:51 At some point, Brock Purdy's going to have to make a big throw in a big spot.
06:54 I don't care about him missing throws in the first quarter.
06:58 That happens.
06:59 Everybody does from time to time.
07:01 What I care about is when that moment arrives, like Jimmy Garoppolo at the end of Super Bowl
07:06 54, after the Chiefs take the lead and Emmanuel Sanders is open, and Garoppolo misses him.
07:12 Not that that's the easiest throw in the world, but Sanders was open, and Garoppolo missed
07:16 him.
07:17 Is there going to be an occasion like that against a great quarterback?
07:19 And it may not come until the Super Bowl, if they get there.
07:23 Maybe it's Mahomes.
07:25 Maybe it's Josh Allen.
07:26 Maybe it's somebody else.
07:28 But do you rise up and make big throw in big spot after other quarterback has made big
07:32 throw in big spot to take the lead late in the game?
07:35 If it even gets to that, maybe the 49ers are going to be so good he never has to.
07:39 But that's the one thing that is wait and see for me with Brock Purdy.
07:43 Does he make big throw in big spot in a playoff game?
07:47 Well, I think you could say that about a lot of quarterbacks, can't you?
07:53 Can't you say that about Justin Herbert?
07:54 But until we know.
07:55 Can't you?
07:56 I agree.
07:57 I mean, you can say that about guys who were drafted.
08:00 You can say that about guys who were drafted in the top five, six, seven.
08:06 Can you say it about Tua?
08:07 Yes.
08:08 Can you say it about Josh Allen, even?
08:11 He's made some, but let's see him do it in the Super Bowl.
08:15 I understand what you're saying, but Mike, my whole thing is, my feeling about Brock
08:20 Purdy is very simple.
08:23 He is being judged on automatic skepticism because he was the last pick in the draft.
08:33 That's it.
08:34 Automatic skepticism.
08:36 Even though in the first 11 games he started and played at least three quarters in those
08:43 games, or I'm sorry, not started, but played at least three quarters in the games that
08:47 he hasn't lost a game yet.
08:49 And I'm just saying, I'm just saying in the immortal words of Laura King, I'm just saying
08:55 that I think he is judged on a different level and a different standard is used to judge
09:03 Brock Purdy than it is to judge other starting quarterbacks in the NFL.
09:09 I don't like it.
09:11 Well, but I, I understand it.
09:15 He was the last guy taken in the draft.
09:16 So there's automatically going to be building skepticism no matter where he is.
09:20 He was the third guy on the depth chart last year when he finally got his chance.
09:24 And there's a sense that he's just the guy who is holding together a machine that runs
09:29 perfectly well, regardless of what he does.
09:32 At some point though, you have to make that throw like Garoppolo didn't like Jared Goff
09:37 didn't in Superbowl 53.
09:40 There are plenty of guys that fail and there are plenty of guys that pass.
09:44 We haven't seen which guy Purdy is.
09:48 That's all to be determined.
09:49 And when you're a 49ers fan who has to wonder on what ancient burial ground did they build
09:55 Levi's stadium and desecrate and create some curse that is fallen over the team that there
10:03 are destined to get, to get close and never finished.
10:06 That's what they've been since 2019 2020 was wasted because of injuries, but, but they've
10:12 been 21, 22, they keep knocking on the door and they can't get it in.
10:16 It comes back to quarterback.
10:17 So I understand why people are nervous.
10:19 I understand why people are taking a wait and see approach.
10:22 And I'll say this also, Peter, I think this is part of it.
10:25 You may disagree with me and that's fine.
10:27 Wouldn't be the first time.
10:29 I think when you think of a franchise quarterback, you think of Joe Montana, Dan Marino, right?
10:38 Brock Purdy is just kind of a weird name.
10:41 It doesn't sound like a franchise quarterback name.
10:44 Purdy is a little too close to 30.
10:46 I just think people have a hard time looking at that name and saying that's a franchise
10:49 quarterback.
10:50 I know when I first saw that name, that easily is the most ridiculous point you've ever made.
10:56 I, that's easily the most ridiculous you've ever made.
11:01 That is, that's absurd.
11:02 That's one of the silliest things.
11:04 I guarantee you, I guarantee you I'm not the only person that that's like, well, that's
11:09 not a quarterback name.
11:11 When he first landed on the radar screen last year, I'm just, I'm, he's got, it's all factors
11:16 combined.
11:17 We're just, it's, it makes people inclined to say, let's wait and see.
11:21 Let's wait and see.
11:23 Can he stay healthy?
11:24 Let's wait and see.
11:25 Can you make big throw and big spot?
11:27 Let's wait and see.
11:28 And it's all, I think a direct result of what happened last year.
11:31 Everything was moving in the right direction and he got injured through no fault of his
11:34 own, but it still happened.
11:36 So Brock Purdy, I guess I would not tell him on this point.
11:41 I'll, I'll make this point.
11:43 Okay.
11:44 If Joe Montana's name was Joe effing horse crap, he still would have been one of the
11:51 greatest quarterbacks of all time.
11:53 Well, that's all I can say.
11:54 Would have made the right.
11:55 If Brock Purdy's name is Joe horse crab coal, he will be darn good.
12:03 I, you know, there've been studies, you know, like the whole vibe of, you know what it is,
12:09 Mike, here's the thing.
12:10 You have too much time to think.
12:12 You have too much time to think.
12:14 Because sometimes you want to just get away and go watch, leave it to beaver reruns and
12:19 watch Gilligan's Island reruns.
12:21 You want to watch Perry Mason on prime video.
12:24 Hey, that's one of my big, have you ever seen a good quarterback?
12:28 Have you ever seen a good quarterback named lumpy?
12:30 Not me.
12:31 I just think it's part of the overall quarterback vibe.
12:33 Has it been a quarterback named lumpy because there hasn't been a quarterback named lumpy,
12:39 right?
12:41 Because he's never made it to the NFL.
12:42 Cause you never got past high school.
12:44 We never got on the field in high school.
12:45 Cause his name was lumpy.
12:47 I got a quiz for you.
12:48 Mike, I got a quiz for you.
12:50 Go ahead.
12:51 I got a quiz for you.
12:52 You ready?
12:54 What was the name of the actor who played lumpy Rutherford on leave it to beaver?
13:00 Oh God.
13:01 I would have never remembered his last name.
13:03 I do not know the name of the guy who played lumpy.
13:06 You're going to love this.
13:08 His name was Frank bank.
13:12 I know that I can get to watch the credit.
13:17 That's a name I can get behind.
13:20 I will say this before we move on.
13:22 And I appreciate the fact that we disagree on this.
13:24 All I know is when I first saw the name that he was entering the fray, I thought that doesn't
13:30 sound like a quarterback name.
13:32 And I think other people, if I react to that that way, that was my human reaction, man,
13:37 that doesn't sound like a quarterback name.
13:39 I think others do the same and it factors into just the overall question.
13:44 Is this guy, the guy that the 49ers had been waiting for?
13:48 Is this the guy who makes it factors in the overall question in the four Oreo in the Florio
13:55 Wikipedia page?
13:57 I'm not the only one like me.
13:59 I'm not the only one like me.
14:01 I don't know.
14:02 You tell me anybody who legitimately says, I don't like that as a quarterback.
14:07 That's not like a quarterback name factor in what I think of him as a player.
14:13 That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard.
14:16 You got to, I don't know.
14:17 I got more for you.
14:18 We got a long show, so I got, we got, we got another 90 minutes.
14:23 King.
14:24 Not all of us are called King.
14:25 Not all of us get to walk around with the moniker of King.
14:29 So anyway, I, it's Mike Florio.
