00:00And I can't even say the final score without laughing and rolling my eyes.
00:0512-6?
00:07That's the final score of your season on the Brink game?
00:1112-6? I don't care that it was raining.
00:14It wasn't even raining that hard. Part of the game.
00:18The score was higher in Chicago two years ago.
00:22It was an absolute, like, drenched downpour the whole game.
00:27Let's go to Wesley in San Mateo.
00:30Hi, Wesley. Thank you for calling.
00:32Thanks for taking my call, guys. I really appreciate it.
00:35I love listening to the show.
00:37Thanks, man.
00:38I just want to say that Brock Burdy, he's been struggling recently.
00:42You know, seeing him literally try to jump and throw,
00:45and I think he jumped through three times.
00:48And, you know, you know who doesn't do that?
00:51Tim Tebow.
00:52Yeah, and Tim Tebow would be a great connection with Ricky Pearsall.
00:56Yeah, that's all I got to say.
00:58Wesley, thanks.
01:00Your call was building, and then I got the joke that you tried to get off.
01:05Yeah.
01:06So, obviously, Tim Tebow's not the answer.
01:10But there is a Brock Burdy conversation to have.
01:13And there is a Florida connection there from Tebow to Pearsall.
01:15Sure, sure, understood.
01:17We'll leave that there.
01:18Yeah, the jump throws from Brock.
01:20Sometimes jump throws, you're like, whoa, that's athletic, that's creative.
01:23Sometimes you're like, can you not see over the line?
01:27Is that why you're jumping?
01:29And, yes, he got another big ball knocked down last night
01:32when they were deep in their own territory.
01:34It is – there's no way around it.
01:37It's been a problem this year.
01:39His height has been a problem this year.
01:41Well, it's been the offensive line.
01:42And the height's not a problem when you have a clean pocket.
01:44Yep.
01:45And you're still going to have balls tipped.
01:46And last year when he threw the four picks against Baltimore,
01:49two of them were tipped at the line of scrimmage.
01:51And so that's always going to be an issue.
01:53And, you know, it's up to Kyle Shanahan to roll him out
01:55and get him away from the defensive line that can tip those balls.
01:59But the biggest issue for Brock this year, I think, has been a lack of pocket security.
02:06He hasn't had a clean pocket a lot of the time.
02:08This is not to give him excuses because he's been able to make plays
02:12outside the pocket and make plays with his legs.
02:15But the lack of real pass pro this year has been an issue.
02:18I completely agree with you.
02:20And so I am not of the mind that the 49ers need to move on at the quarterback position.
02:28I think too much has been achieved.
02:30I think he has shown that you can succeed with him.
02:35But obviously, like any football team and any quarterback,
02:38like there have been good quarterbacks who, you know,
02:41I think of Joe Burrow a couple of years ago when the Cincinnati Bengals
02:44could not block a stationary target.
02:49And it'll ruin you.
02:50It'll make it very, very difficult.
02:53And it's not like Brock has been awful all year.
02:55He has been lesser than he was the last two years.
02:58But I still think the scenario exists for him to play very well
03:02and for the 49ers to be successful.
03:04But, yes, he needs to be better.
03:07He needs to grow from this.
03:09And, yeah, they need better offensive line play.
03:13That's what they need.
03:14They need better offensive line play.
03:16And you know what?
03:18Maybe this will help.
03:20Maybe this will help.
03:21Maybe the blessing in disguise is that now Brock Purdy and his agent
03:24don't ask for $60 million.
03:26I don't know where that's going.
03:28I don't know how week-to-week it is.
03:30That's the phrase that Tim Kawakami used.
03:33Like, what's the price?
03:35It's week-to-week.
03:36Well, stock down.
03:38And maybe that'll help.
03:40Maybe that'll give them some flexibility that they weren't planning on
03:42in the offseason.
03:43I don't know.
03:44I don't know.
03:45But I still want Brock Purdy to be the quarterback of the team.
03:47And I don't think that there's any doubt that they want Brock Purdy
03:49to be the quarterback of the team.
03:51So, if we all start with that as the baseline.
03:53And, you know, you can feel whatever you want to feel.
03:55And if you want to fire Shanahan, you can fire Shanahan.
03:58They won't.
04:00And if you want Brock gone, traded, cut, or whatever, you can feel that.
04:04They don't.
04:05So, Shanahan's coming back.
04:07Brock is coming back.
04:09And Brock, I believe, is getting a contract in the offseason.
04:12But your point, I think, is a good one.
04:14And maybe it just changes the tenor and the structure of the deal.
04:18And, you know, Brock has struggled this year.
04:20And he's looked pedestrian at times.
04:22He's looked mortal.
04:24So, maybe instead of five years and $325 million, 65 per,
04:30maybe it turns out to be four years and 160,
04:33which is what Daniel Jones got with the Giants.
04:35Maybe he ends up settling, quote, unquote.
04:38And I'm using air quotes because 40 million a year sounds pretty cool to me.
04:42I would do that if I'm the Niners.
04:44If I'm Brock, I would take four and 160.
04:46I would look at it and say, you know what?
04:48This year was not wonderful for me.
04:50It wasn't great for us.
04:52You want to pay me.
04:53I want to get paid.
04:54You know what?
04:55I'll take four and 160 with 100 guaranteed no matter what.
04:58And then let's go forward.
04:59And after four years, or three years really,
05:02if after three more years you still want me,
05:05then I'll get the really, really big bag.
05:07Connor in San Leandro is next up.
05:09Hi, Connor.
05:10Thank you for calling.
05:11Thank you, guys.
05:14Really happy with it.
05:15Anytime 2 p.m. on a weekday comes around,
05:17I feel like my blood pressure goes right down.
05:20This is like sports fan therapy.
05:22I feel like if I listen for all four hours,
05:24I should get a discount on my health insurance premiums.
05:27This is great.
05:29Listen, after having a season like this,
05:33after getting to the Super Bowl, I mean,
05:36this season could mean one of two things,
05:38because I think that we actually are in the offseason right now.
05:41Either it was just a gimme year, and if so, that's great.
05:45Everyone gets a long summer.
05:47Maybe we get some good draft picks and a better schedule next year.
05:50Or it could really spell the beginning of Kyle Shanahan on the hot seat.
05:55And I think the difference between those two options
05:59is whether or not we have another goofy offseason.
06:03I really do want us all to start to question,
06:05what does a goofy offseason look like?
06:07Like, what does a Farhan-esque goofy offseason look like?
06:11Well, first, the silence will be deafening, right?
06:14Like, Parag is not going to come out and tell us what he's thinking,
06:17and neither is Kyle.
06:18He's just going to sulk.
06:19But also, you'll sign Brock to the max.
06:22You maybe get an offensive lineman in a late round,
06:25and then we see these goofy luxury picks,
06:29like a wide receiver in the first round or a kicker in the third.
06:32And if we get to September,
06:34and he's leaving it to the sports radio guys to tell us,
06:38well, a good quarterback doesn't really need that strong of an offensive line,
06:44I gotta be honest, that's a hot seat sentence to me,
06:47because I love the guy.
06:49I said over and over on this show
06:51that he should run for mayor in any city in the Bay he'd win.
06:55But for Kyle Shanahan to have another goofy offseason
06:58and not address what's obviously going on,
07:01he would deserve to be on the hot seat.
07:04Well, Connor, it's a very interesting call.
07:06Thank you very much.
07:07I can only imagine Kyle Shanahan running for mayor.
07:10He would hate all the speeches.
07:11He doesn't like talking to the media.
07:13But anyway.
07:14We're going to reduce crime and stuff,
07:15and we're going to try to fix the homeless problem and stuff.
07:17Connor mentioned signing Brock Purdy to the max.
07:20I just want to mention there's no max.
07:22They can sign him to whatever they want.
07:24They can sign him to a billion dollars if they want.
07:26But that's just sort of a quirky little response to what you said.
07:31This is what, as he put it, was the word wild or a bad offseason,
07:37a wacky offseason, what it would look like to me.
07:40If you get to free agency in the NFL
07:44and you start getting rumors and you get the headline,
07:47Purdy and Niners are far apart on a deal.
07:51And then the next thing that happens is
07:54Niners expressing interest in free agent quarterback Sam Darnold.
07:59That's the one-two punch I don't want to see.
08:03Nobody wants it.
08:04That means you've mismanaged this to me.
08:07If you get to that, you're setting yourself up
08:10for another chaotic, controversial, disconnected offseason.
08:15And you don't want that.
08:18I understand why today it may feel alluring to look at other quarterbacks.
08:23But it doesn't make any sense,
08:26especially that Brock has another year at only a million dollars.
08:31That's going to be the cheaper option for next year for sure.
08:34I'd argue that Sam Darnold would look a lot like Brock
08:37in front of this offensive line.
08:40I'm not there yet.
08:43And I don't even think I'm going to be there.
08:45There's a real weird circumstance that would lead to that.
08:48This needs to be quick and quiet.
08:50It needs to get done early because the last thing you want
08:53if you want to keep Brock Purdy is for him to not be in OTAs
08:57and maybe miss part of camp.
08:59If you want your quarterback to get better
09:01and everybody wants Brock Purdy to play better than he did this year,
09:05the best way to get better is to work on your craft with your team
09:09and the quarterback whisperer.
09:11So if you want him, if you like him, if you're going to keep him,
09:14get it done early, Parag.
09:16Don't dawdle.
