00:00Here's Brock Purdy speaks on Thursdays as the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers
00:06and here is a little stretch of his media availability today.
00:11The Super Bowl that you figured the way the Chiefs played you guys that that would be
00:18a blueprint for other teams moving forward.
00:21Have you seen that over the first two games any kind of similarities in defensive approach
00:28to you and the offense?
00:31Honestly, I don't think so.
00:33Just the way the Jets run their defense, they ran it that way.
00:37The way Minnesota runs their defense, they ran it that way.
00:41So every team that we've played so far, it's only been two games, but in the two games
00:45that we've played, each defense has done what they've done.
00:49And they are who they are and they compete that way.
00:52So I don't think I really have seen much of like any similarities with Kansas City.
00:57Each team has their own style of defense.
00:59Is the Rams style still similar even though number 99 is not in there, they still want
01:05to emphasize what the B-line coming out here?
01:08Yeah.
01:09They got some young guys up there, man, that are hungry and that fly around and they're
01:13aggressive and so we have a lot of respect for them.
01:16And so and then their scheme outside of that, I think is a little similar to how it was
01:21last year and stuff in terms of the coordinator that had left, but very similar in that regard.
01:27But the guys up front still bring it.
01:28So after the game, you seem to compliment Flores' scheme a little bit.
01:33What is the challenge of that?
01:34Is it that it's mentally, he speeds you up and then slows you down and you got to find
01:38the soft spots in the zone, you got to find the rushers and who's coming, how many?
01:43What's the challenge of that defense?
01:45I just think he does a really good job of disguising some stuff and dropping guys out
01:50or whatever.
01:51And so, you know, he did a really good job with that.
01:54And so in that video, that's all I was trying to say was, you know, just give him his credit.
01:57Like that was a good job that he did there.
01:59But nothing more than that.
02:01But like I said before in the last couple of questions with, you know, that's what they've
02:06shown on tape and that's what they did in the game, you know, and they did a good job
02:09with that of making it look like one thing and then making it another.
02:12And you know, their guys are all tied together really well.
02:15And you know, they just, it's a bend but don't break kind of defense.
02:19And you know, they did a great job, four quarters of doing that.
02:23And they didn't change it up from what we saw on film, like they did it and they executed
02:29really well.
02:30That was the biggest difference.
02:31So much is made of your supporting cast over the last couple of years, ad nauseum almost,
02:35but now a lot of them aren't going to be there.
02:37How do you feel going into a game with some pretty key guys not playing?
02:41Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, it sucks not having your guys and, you know, like Debo
02:48and Christian and stuff.
02:49So it's like, all right, you know, how can we figure out to get the ball to other guys
02:53and stuff.
02:54But man, we got playmakers, like I've said that before.
02:56We got a really good scheme, great play caller and some great players that, you know, step
03:00up in the roles and do their job really well.
03:03So for me, man, it's, I still have to do my job in terms of my reads and my progressions
03:08more so than I need to now change the way I think and make sure I'm getting it to this
03:13guy or that guy because a couple guys are out.
03:15It's not like that.
03:17That's the challenge for me is how can I continue to be better with my progressions and as a
03:20quarterback and handling situations and, you know, being as efficient as I can, regardless
03:26of who's in.
03:27So that's where my mindset is at with this game.
03:30And you know, obviously, I'd love to have my guys back and playing with them.
03:33But, you know, that's just how it is with this game sometimes.
03:36When you watched the film from last week, did you feel like you weren't deciphering
03:39what you were seeing as quickly as you normally do?
03:41I would say so.
03:42I had a couple plays where I dropped back and, you know, for me, I just wasn't on top
03:46of my progressions and getting off certain reads and holding on to the ball a little
03:51bit in certain situations and plays.
03:53And so that's where, you know, I had to be better.
03:56And you know, it's football.
03:58You're not always going to be perfect.
03:59There's some some plays like that that are going to happen.
04:01But for me, I think it happened more than I wanted it to.
04:03And so, you know, I had to learn from it and grow from it.
04:06So yeah.
04:08You got Eric Saubert involved a couple of times the other day, I think, in case George
04:12can't play this week.
04:13What's just kind of your comfort level with him and Jake specifically?
04:17Yeah, I think Saubert has done a great job just coming in and doing his job well and
04:21knowing what our offense is, where his landmarks are supposed to be as a route runner.
04:25And then in the run game, he does a great job for our guys.
04:29And so he did a great job towards the end of the game, two minute drill.
04:32He was right where he needed to be and caught a couple, you know, crucial catches and stuff.
04:36So and he's got experience.
04:37He's played for a while now.
04:38So for me, as a quarterback, it gives me some comfort knowing that he's been in those situations
04:42and he's willing to, you know, understand what we're what we're trying to do and then
04:46execute in the heat of the moment.
04:48So and then Jake Tonjes, man, just seeing his progression from even last year till now
04:53of knowing our offense and and being where he needs to be.
04:57And he's a smooth route runner.
04:58He got good.
04:59He's got great hands.
05:00So I'm excited for him and his opportunity, man.
05:02He's had a great camp and and whenever his numbers have been called upon at practice
05:06or in some preseason games, I think he's done a great job.
05:09So I'm excited for both of them.
05:10The 49ers fans historically travel really well to SoFi, times outnumbering the home
05:15fans there.
05:16Does it feel like a typical road game when you're in that environment and does that help
05:19the offense when it comes to communication, maybe not having to go on silent counts in
05:22certain situations?
05:23Yeah, I think that's huge.
05:25You know, for example, like last week going in Minnesota with the environment as it was
05:29and so far, our operation, our cadence and everything is completely different and how
05:33we rep it at practice.
05:34So to be able to go down there and and have our Niner fans show up and, you know, to be
05:39able to use our like our verbal cadence and stuff, it's huge for us.
05:43So we're obviously ready for any kind of situation if we do have to go on silent.
05:47But more than anything, man, we're proud to be playing for the Niners and the faithful
05:50show up and have our backs, especially down in L.A.
05:53So we're excited for that.
05:55And it's nice going down there and being able to, you know, hear each other and communicate.
05:59It's a big part of the game.
06:00Some of the advanced metrics show that the receivers aren't getting quite the separation
06:04thus far that they did last year.
06:06What does the film show?
06:07And when they're not getting separation, do you have to throw more 50-50 balls?
06:10And is that does that add stress to the whole thing?
06:12I mean, I have no idea what those metrics are or anything, but I think on film, you
06:16know, our guys are doing a good job and it's just it comes down to execution between both
06:20of us being where they need to be and then me trusting and laying the ball and throwing
06:23the ball accurately time and time again.
06:25So and that's just us being, you know, hard on ourselves.
06:27But that's also the standard that we have and that we've shown over the last couple
06:31of years.
06:32So I think our guys are doing a great job and whatever the metrics are showing, if they're
06:37not getting opener stuff, that's I don't really know if I believe any of that.
06:40I think it's it's really about, you know, me being efficient, them doing their job and
06:46being on the same page.
06:47So, yeah.
06:48Thanks, guys.
06:49All right.
06:50There it is.
06:51Thanks, guys.
06:52Yeah.
06:53There goes there goes Brock Shanahan.
06:54I like it's it's absolutely beyond noticeable.
07:02He's not just running his plays.
07:04He's picked up his speech patterns.
07:07It's a little bit of an emulation sensation.
07:09He's emulating Shanahan, no doubt.
07:11It's hilarious and stuff.
07:12But anyway, anything stand out for me right there at the end where he's sort of trying
07:19to debunk the idea that that the 49 receivers are not getting open and it really doesn't
07:25matter.
07:26And he's right about that part of it.
07:27And you can look at the metrics about, you know, how many yards of separation a guy has.
07:32If he is open even a little bit and the pass is there and he makes the catch, who cares
07:38how open a guy is?
07:39For me, a bigger issue with this offense so far has been the pass protection and the fact
07:44that the pressure rate for the 49ers is among the leaders in football, which is not what
07:51you want.
07:52I think he's been pressured on twenty five percent of his drop backs.
07:55And that's not a key to an offense that, you know, wants to push the ball down the field.
08:01Last year he was among the leaders in air yards per attempt, right?
08:04As a passer.
08:05And in order to do that, you have to give your quarterback some time.
08:10And through two games, he hasn't had a lot of time.
08:12Yeah.
08:13Yeah.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Yeah.
08:16Yeah.
08:17Yeah.
08:18Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Yeah.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Yeah.
08:23Yeah.
08:24Yeah.
08:25Yeah.
08:26Yeah.
08:27Yeah.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Yeah.
08:30Yeah.
08:31Yeah.
08:32Yeah.
08:33Yeah.
08:34Yeah.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Yeah.
08:37Yeah.
08:38Yeah.
08:39Yeah.
08:40Yeah.
08:41Yeah.
08:42Yeah.
08:43Yeah.
08:44You need it.
08:45You need it.
08:46How about now?
08:47How about now?
08:48And then there's Brandon Ayuk.
08:49Oh, you're a 30 million dollar receiver.
08:50You better be there, and be that dog this weekend.
08:53And then there's even Kyle Shanahan.
08:55There's even Kyle Shanahan who I know people are looking at it going, if you're the master
09:01of the scheme, then it shouldn't matter less who's out there.
09:05And, like I will say right now, I don't really buy in to any of those three narratives.
09:13which is why I kind of want to see it, because I actually have confidence that it's still going to look pretty good.
09:17Yeah, and it should look pretty good,
09:20and he actually talked in his press conference about Jake Tonjes and his ability to come in and
09:25potentially replace George Kittle if Kittle's unable to go, and Saubert and what he's meant,
09:30so you won't have Debo and Christian McCaffrey for sure, we know that, and if George Kittle is out as well,
09:36then you start to think about exactly how it might look and, you know, how they'll go about
09:41not only scoring points, but winning the game, and it might be a little bit different, and you know,
09:46we talked earlier to Jay Gruden, and something he said might actually
09:51be a thing that they focus on this weekend,
09:53which is it's okay sometimes to punt, and if you have a good defense and the Niners do have a good defense,
09:58you could be a little bit more conservative,
10:00you can punt the ball to the Rams and know that your defense should be able to hold its water against a depleted offense.
