00:00 Egypt's National Election Authority announced that the presidential elections will be held
00:04 on 10, 11 and 12 December this year.
00:07 You see they go to great lengths to convince their audience these elections will be free,
00:11 fair and transparent.
00:12 They hold two major press conferences in which they give detailed presentations about the
00:16 precise process and procedures of these elections.
00:19 So clearly it's very important for them that these elections are perceived as credible.
00:23 They want to convince the world and their own population that Egypt is a democracy and
00:27 not a dictatorship.
00:28 Previous elections in Egypt have actually drawn a lot of criticism for being quite the
00:33 opposite of fair and free.
00:35 President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is in power since 2014 and was re-elected in 2018.
00:41 During those elections two potential challengers of Sisi were arrested and several others withdrew
00:47 after being intimidated.
00:48 President Sisi has yet to announce his official candidacy for this election.
00:52 But several other politicians have announced their candidacy.
00:55 One of them is Ahmed el-Tantawi.
00:58 He is a critic of the government and he said that he intends to run for these elections.
01:02 However, 35 volunteers of his campaign have already been arrested in past weeks.
01:07 Also the National Election Authority in their press conferences issued some veiled threats
01:12 towards journalists.
01:14 They said that spreading rumours about the integrity of this election is a violation
01:19 of the elections code and could actually constitute a crime.
