00:00 King Charles' relationship with Queen Elizabeth was nearly destroyed by Camilla affair.
00:04 Author Charles and his wife Queen Camilla were crowned on May 6 at London's Westminster Abbey.
00:09 It's been said that Queen Elizabeth II developed a close-knit bond with her hair during the last decade of her life,
00:15 but getting there wasn't easy.
00:16 British author Andrew Morton told Fox News Digital that at one point, Britain's longest-reigning monarch
00:22 and the now King Charles A.E. were at odds over his true love, Camilla Parker Bowles.
00:26 "There was considerable animus between the Houses of the Queen and Prince Charles over Camilla," he explained.
00:32 "It was there before Princess Diana died, and certainly after Diana died.
00:35 The Queen and her advisors, her courtiers, her private secretary,
00:39 they all believed that Prince Charles should give up Camilla," he said.
00:42 "He could love her, but he needed to leave her.
00:44 And that's because they felt she was damaging to the monarchy, which she was.
00:48 There's no question about that."
00:49 The paperback version of Morton's latest book, The Queen, Her Life, was published on September 5 with a new epilogue.
00:56 It takes an in-depth look at the late Queen's life and legacy.
00:59 The best-selling author, known for being Princess Diana's biographer,
01:02 has previously written books on other members of the British royal family,
01:06 including Meghan Markle and Princess Margaret.
01:09 Morton claimed that the Queen once had a strained relationship with her son over his mistress,
01:13 which required someone to serve as mediator.
01:15 The presence of Camilla in Charles' life did cause a rift between the Queen and her eldest son,
01:20 one which took several years to patch up.
01:22 Morton explained, "And it wasn't until the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, intervened and said,
01:27 'Look, I've spoken to Camilla on numerous occasions.
01:30 She's dedicated and loving, and her feelings for Charles are not going away.'
01:34 And what's the Queen's job?
01:35 It is to preserve the monarchy."
01:37 Morton continued, "She sees this woman who is damaging the monarchy remaining in place.
01:41 So it took a long time for that to be resolved."
01:44 A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace didn't immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
01:49 A rep previously told Fox News Digital, "We don't comment on such books."
01:53 Charles met Camilla in 1970 through mutual friend Lucia Santa Cruz.
01:57 According to reports, Charles was instantly smitten.
02:00 Despite a blossoming romance, Charles joined the Navy in 1971.
02:04 It's also noted that Camilla didn't meet royal prerequisites for marrying in here to the throne.
02:09 The couple likely believed they didn't have a future together.
02:12 While Charles was serving in the Navy, Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles,
02:15 an ex-boyfriend of Charles' younger sister Princess Anne, in 1973.
02:20 According to reports, a devastated Charles tried to stop Camilla from marrying Parker Bowles,
02:25 but the pair remained friends.
02:26 Author Penny Drewer previously alleged in her book, "The Duchess,"
02:29 the untold story that Charles and Camilla began an affair around 1978 or 1979
02:35 and Parker Bowles was allegedly aware.
02:37 As the pair stayed close, Charles began courting Lady Diana Spencer in 1980.
02:42 Charles and Diana married in 1981.
02:45 Charles and Camilla reportedly began having another affair in 1986.
02:49 In 1992, Charles and Diana announced their separation.
02:53 During an ITV interview in 1994, Charles admitted to cheating on Diana.
02:57 A year later, Camilla and her spouse called it quits,
03:00 announcing in a statement they had lived apart for years.
03:03 Charles and Diana's divorce was finalized in 1996.
03:06 A year later, the Princess of Wales died in a car crash at age 36.
03:10 While Charles and Camilla made their first public appearance in 1999,
03:14 it would be a year later when the Queen acknowledged the relationship.
03:17 Charles and Camilla married in 2005.
03:20 The Queen didn't attend the civil ceremony.
03:22 In February 2022, the Queen said in a statement that Camilla's title would be Queen Consort when Charles became king.
03:28 "When in the fullness of time my son Charles becomes king,
03:31 I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me,
03:36 and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes,
03:38 Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service,"
03:42 said the Queen when she marked the 70th anniversary of her rule.
03:46 Following the announcement, Charles said he and Camilla were "deeply conscious of the honor."
03:50 "As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities,
03:54 my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout," he said.
03:58 The Queen died in September 2022 at age 96.
04:01 Days before the couple's coronation in May of this year,
04:04 Charles issued a royal warrant to change his wife's title to Queen.
04:08 She is now known as Queen Camilla.
04:09 Morton said Diana would have fainted at the idea of Camilla becoming queen.
04:14 She also didn't believe her ex was fit to be king.
04:16 "She was quite specific with me when I did her book," Morton explained.
04:20 "She said that Prince Charles should go live in Tuscany, buy a farm there, paint,
04:23 do all the things that he loves doing, and go there, she said to me,
04:27 with his lady, meaning Camilla, and for the crown to jump a generation.
04:31 She wanted William to take over at an earlier age and for her to guide him through this new position," Morton continued.
04:37 "That was her ambition, and that ambition was thwarted both by her death,
04:41 but also by circumstances, so her dream never remotely came true.
04:44 It was quite the opposite."
04:46 Morton also said Diana was "shocked and hurt" by Charles' reaction to the birth of their second child, Prince Harry.
04:52 According to Diana, Charles was disappointed that Harry wasn't the daughter he longed for and that his son had red hair.
04:58 Diana recalled the comments in the secret tapes she recorded for Morton while he wrote her biography.
05:03 Morton said Charles expressed remorse for those comments in his own way.
05:06 "He always used to talk about Harry as 'my darling boy,'" Morton explained.
05:10 "He gave both boys tremendous latitude as a father,
05:13 and he expected the courtiers to discipline his boys, who were both pre-boisterous.
05:18 He was the kind of loving father who listened to the opera on his headphones and let somebody else say,
05:22 'You must do this, you must do that.'
05:24 So he was kind of an indulgent father, a loving one, but also quite a distant one."
05:29 Harry in his book spare talks about how when his father broke the news of his mother's death,
05:33 "there were no hugs or anything," Morton noted.
05:36 So he wasn't an especially touchy-feely modern-day father, but neither was the Queen nor his father, Prince Philip.
05:42 Harry wasn't the first royal in the House of Windsor to call out an emotionally cold parent.
05:46 In 1994, Charles cooperated in a biography written by Jonathan Dimbleby,
05:51 where he described his mother as a distant figure during his childhood.
05:54 His father, Prince Philip, was depicted as harsh and domineering, even reducing his eldest son to tears at times.
06:00 The former Princess Elizabeth was crowned in 1953 at age 27.
06:04 Charles was four years old at the time.
06:06 Both the Queen and Prince Philip were very disappointed in Charles for authorizing the book in the first place.
06:11 Morton explained, "It was released when they were in Russia on their first ever visit by a reigning sovereign to the communist country.
06:18 So the release of the book overshadowed that, and that's the one thing you never do.
06:22 You never overshadow somebody else's foreign tour because these tours take thousands of man-hours to organize.
06:28 So they were upset about that.
06:29 Philip was asked, 'Were you cold and distant parents?'
06:32 Morton shared, and he said, 'We did our best.'
06:34 And it's interesting that Princess Anne, Prince, Andrew, and Prince Edward as a triumvirate approached Charles and said,
06:41 'Your description of our mother and father is not our remembrance.'
06:44 Philip, Gritton's longest reigning consort, passed away in 2021 at age 99.
06:50 Charles ascended to the throne upon the Queen's death with Camilla by his side.
06:54 When you look at the way Charles mourned his mother, it was deep, heartfelt, and very loving.
06:58 Morton reflected, 'It's not like she was some distant royal matriarch.
07:02 She was very much his mother, and he very much missed her.'
