00:13 with her singing and her lyrics.
00:14 Tune in today for more flashback fall fun
00:17 with Selena Gomez and a look back
00:18 at the first season of the Kelly Clarkson show.
00:21 Selena Gomez reveals why she's so open
00:23 about her mental health.
00:24 Selena Gomez has revealed why she's continued
00:26 to be so open about her mental health struggles.
00:29 The actor, 31, spoke candidly about her wellbeing
00:32 during an interview with her mental fitness publication,
00:35 Wonder Mind, published on 10 October
00:37 for World Mental Health Day.
00:38 According to Gomez, when she started being transparent
00:41 about her mental health, it had one
00:43 of the biggest positive impacts on her.
00:45 "When I decided to be open about my mental health,
00:47 people began to reach out and share their stories," she said.
00:50 "Listening and connecting was the biggest gift
00:52 because you feel less alone."
00:53 The only murders in the building star noted
00:56 that despite how open she's been about her mental health,
00:58 she's still working on improving her wellbeing.
01:01 "I am not going to pretend I have it all figured out,
01:03 and I think it's always going to be a work in progress.
01:05 You have to learn to make the choices
01:07 that are best for you," she continued.
01:09 The "Single Soon" singer also specified
01:11 that when she doesn't have the chance
01:12 to take a full mental health day
01:14 in the midst of her busy schedule,
01:15 she's been a true believer in DBT,
01:18 dialectical behavior therapy,
01:19 which is a type of talk therapy that's specially adapted
01:22 for people who experience emotions very intensely,
01:25 according to the Cleveland Clinic.
01:27 The publication also notes that DBT focuses
01:29 on helping people accept the reality of their lives
01:32 and their behaviors,
01:33 as well as helping them learn to change their lives,
01:35 including their unhelpful behaviors.
01:37 When asked what advice she'd given her younger self
01:39 about taking care of her mental health
01:41 during the interview with "Wonderment,"
01:43 Gomez said that she tries not to look back
01:45 and wished anything could have been different.
01:47 However, she still acknowledged how grateful she is
01:49 for different publications that have shined a light
01:51 on mental health issues,
01:53 noting that those outlets weren't around
01:54 when she was a child.
01:55 "What I'm happy about is that more people are opening up
01:58 about their mental health.
01:59 There are more resources out there, such as 'Wonderment,'
02:02 that I would have loved when I was younger," she said.
02:04 "I'm happy anyone reading this right now
02:06 has a place to connect."
02:07 Regarding advice that she's given to someone
02:09 who's struggling with their mental health,
02:11 Gomez said that she doesn't love doing that
02:13 because she doesn't have all of the answers.
02:15 However, she still gave some tips to fans
02:17 about confiding in their loved ones
02:18 when going through a difficult time.
02:20 "I'd say, though, find a friend or a family member
02:22 you feel comfortable talking with
02:24 and open up about what you are feeling," she explained.
02:26 "It's very freeing to open up to someone.
02:28 There is so much strength in being vulnerable."
02:31 Over the years, the Disney Channel alum
02:33 has continued to use her platform
02:34 to speak candidly about mental health.
02:36 During an interview with Fast Company earlier this month,
02:39 she discussed some of the reactions she's received from fans,
02:42 noting that she never expected to be able
02:44 to reach the amount of people that she can
02:46 and that she wants to use that responsibility wisely.
02:49 "When I was younger, I thought I could save the world.
02:51 It breaks my heart to hear a girl come up to me
02:53 and say, 'I was so close to taking my life
02:56 when I watched your documentary.
02:58 I couldn't imagine doing that anymore,'" Gomes said,
03:00 referring to her "Selena Gomes, My Mind and Me" documentary,
03:04 which premiered in November 2022.
03:06 "That's the coolest gift.
03:07 But yeah, look at me.
03:09 It's crazy to have that responsibility."
03:11 She also confessed that it's still been difficult
03:13 for her to speak about something so personal
03:15 since she grew up being a people pleaser.
03:17 "I had a responsibility at a very young age.
03:20 Young people were looking up to me,"
03:21 the Rare Beauty founder said.
03:23 "I didn't know who I was.
03:24 Having that responsibility would make me walk
03:26 on eggshells a lot.
03:27 I thought maybe it would be damaging
03:29 to tell people who I am.
03:30 It started to become a threat that freaked me out.
03:32 Well, if you're not right and you can't work."
03:35 However, Gomes added that she wanted to start
03:37 a conversation about mental health
03:39 because of the release of her documentary.
03:41 "I wanted there to be a conversation started.
03:43 I wasn't ashamed, and I wanted it to lead
03:45 to something healing," she said.
