00:31 The CIA.
00:32 It's a well-worn acronym for anyone with even a passing suspicion that the government
00:37 might be up to something.
00:39 Over the years, the Central Intelligence Agency has come to be seen as kind of a front line
00:44 for anything that the top brass in America could be hiding from anyone else.
00:49 When it comes to the matter of time travel, however, has even the CIA started to reveal
00:53 its secrets?
00:55 On June 9th, 1983, one Wayne M. McDonnell, a then-Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army,
01:02 compiled and sent an exhaustive report to the US Army Operational Group, all to do with
01:07 all manner of mystical, seemingly fantastical things.
01:11 The nature of consciousness, out-of-body experiences, and an apparently valid means of time travel.
01:17 All of the above and more were covered in a now-declassified document titled "Analysis
01:22 and Assessment of the Gateway Process".
01:25 And perhaps you've heard rumours surrounding governments and intelligence agencies dabbling
01:29 in this kind of stuff before, and perhaps you've never really cared for them.
01:33 But here, maybe more than with anything else, there really does seem to be something of
01:38 substance.
01:39 It isn't only just hearsay; these are long and specific details released by the CIA of
01:44 a technique that seemingly could change everything.
01:48 At the heart of McDonnell's report is a group later known as the Monroe Institute.
01:52 It was founded by Robert Monroe as Monroe Industries in 1962, before a name change and
01:58 restructuring to Institute in 1985.
02:01 It was primarily interested in research and experiments surrounding consciousness and
02:06 out-of-body experiences, or OBEs, and was actually set up by Robert Monroe largely in
02:12 response to OBEs that he himself had had.
02:15 More specifically, the CIA document focuses in on something called the "Hemisync Method",
02:20 a trademarked term short for "hemispherical synchronization".
02:24 This is a phenomenon wherein the waves in both sides of the brain, the left and the
02:28 right, are synced together to the same level.
02:31 According to the Monroe Institute, hemisync can be achieved via carefully cultivating
02:36 binaural beats, which are sounds created by playing separate beats into the left and right
02:41 ears of a person.
02:42 The binaural beats then serve to sharpen brain function, and when it's done right, to sharpen
02:47 function to the point that one might achieve an altered state of consciousness.
02:52 In a nutshell, that is what Wayne McDonald is reporting back on in his now-declassified
02:57 CIA correspondence.
02:58 But while sceptics might immediately write the entire thing off as some good old-fashioned
03:02 mumbo-jumbo, what's incredible is that that's not what McDonald himself does.
03:06 In fact, it seems that he and the US authorities at the time were really quite convinced by
03:11 it.
03:12 McDonald begins his report by taking his superiors through things that hemisync might be considered
03:17 similar to, although it is different.
03:19 These are hypnosis, transcendental meditation, and biofeedback.
03:23 A somewhat controversial "mind-body" therapy, claimed to enable participants to wield control
03:29 over their own physiological experiences, such as self-blocking pain.
03:33 It's explained that all of the above are believed to work via various versions of compromise
03:38 or channeling between the left and right sides of the brain, with one side suppressing the
03:43 other or encouraging it into a heightened state.
03:46 It's then told how the gateway process and hemisync differ, however, as it's all about
03:50 reaching a kind of equilibrium.
03:53 McDonald quotes the Monroe Institute trainer Melissa Jagger, summarising it as "a state
03:58 of consciousness defined when the EEG patterns of both hemispheres are simultaneously equal
04:04 in amplitude and frequency".
04:06 At that point, McDonald writes that a person's consciousness may be altered "moving it outside
04:11 the physical sphere so as to ultimately escape even the restrictions of time and space".
04:17 In short, achieve hemisync and you could become so much more than just your physical self.
04:24 The CIA report appears to directly suggest that human beings are not, in fact, shackled
04:29 to merely the time or place that their waking bodies inhibit.
04:33 This is the classic out-of-body experience, but the potential is seemingly limitless.
04:38 According to the Monroe Institute, you can reach this higher level of understanding purely
04:42 by listening to purpose-built audio recordings, delivering those binaural beats discussed
04:47 earlier and created by the Institute itself.
04:50 It's then further explained how the hemisync method can induce a profoundly relaxed state
04:55 where even the bifurcation echo of the body - a physical phenomenon linked to the beat
05:00 and rhythms of your heart - is silenced.
05:02 If all goes well, you should, according to the method, eventually reach a state where
05:07 essentially everything in your body is calmed and quietly vibrating with energy at the same,
05:12 now low level of frequency.
05:14 Your circulatory system, your skeleton, all of your organs… it's as though they've
05:19 all followed your brain into the same altered condition.
05:22 And here's where things get really weird.
05:25 MacDonald dedicates the next part of his reports to explaining theories and models for how
05:29 the Earth and the wider universe really function in line with the hemisync state.
05:34 He writes how a properly, hemispherically synchronised brain should ultimately tap into
05:39 the same vibrating levels of the energy and matter of its surrounding environment - in
05:44 our case, of the Earth.
05:46 Reality is explained as "an extraordinarily complex system of energy fields" and, later,
05:52 the universe as "one gigantic hologram of unbelievable complexity".
05:57 For the potential of time travel in particular, though, the apparent suggestion is that hemisync
06:02 gives access to the wider fields dictating Earth itself.
06:06 If a participant can delve deeper and deeper into this same state, then it's suggested
06:11 that they could gain access to the so-called "absolute state of infinite energy".
06:16 And here, or as close to here as possible, so the report implies, is when the mastery
06:21 of time might be achievable.
06:23 It's explained that if one theorises the wider universe to have the shape of "an
06:28 immense, self-contained spiral" - aka a torus - then the past, present and future
06:34 should all be knowable, because they all actually exist simultaneously.
06:40 Use hemisync to better tap into the engines and complexities of the universe, then, and
06:45 one interpretation says that you should be able to travel in time.
06:49 McDonald summarises by writing, quote, "The tentative conclusion to be drawn is that the
06:54 out-of-body state may be regarded as an extremely effective way of accelerating the process
06:59 of enhancing consciousness and of interfacing with dimensions beyond spacetime."
07:05 End quote.
07:06 In a sense, then, the hemisynchronised really do become one with their surroundings, which
07:11 ultimately means that they can move around and through them at will.
07:15 Interestingly, McDonald hints that these kinds of "supreme connections" might also serve
07:19 to explain any number of other paranormal events and experiences.
07:23 If gateway and hemisync are to be believed, then the lines of what's considered physically
07:28 possible really do need to be redrawn.
07:31 And McDonald certainly doesn't suggest that we should doubt the method.
07:35 He even concludes his report with a step-by-step guide as to how the gateway process might
07:39 be used, if and when it's required.
07:42 Genuine travel to the past and then to the future are pitched as among the highest and
07:46 most difficult aspects of the technique.
07:49 But McDonald says that advocates insist that both are possible given enough time, dedication
07:54 and discipline.
07:56 In the last section of his paper, he writes that "there is a sound, rational basis, in
08:01 terms of physical science parameters, for considering gateway to be plausible in terms
08:06 of its essential objectives."
08:09 Of course, questions remain.
08:11 Not least, what's been happening in the years and decades since this 1983 document was written
08:16 up?
08:17 Have U.S. authorities proceeded any further with all that McDonald found?
08:21 And finally, to add just a little more intrigue to the story, there's a missing page from
08:26 the report.
08:27 While almost all of it is now publicly available, page twenty-five is still nowhere to be found.
08:33 Is that purely an administrative error, or was there something else, buried right near
08:38 the end of the overall document, that someone didn't want the rest of the world to read?
08:43 Let us know what you think in the comments.
08:46 But for now, that was a closer look at The Gateway Process, a significant and perhaps
08:51 crucial chapter in the truth and legend surrounding the CIA and experiments with time travel.
08:57 What do you think?
08:58 Is there anything we missed?
