00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're counting down our picks for the 10 Best First Party
00:15 PS2 Games.
00:17 For this list, we'll be exclusively looking at IPs that Sony owns so we won't be seeing
00:22 great PS2 games like Grand Theft Auto San Andres or Final Fantasy X.
00:27 One entry per franchise.
00:29 The PS2 had so many great first party games, so we may have missed your favorite.
00:33 Which first party game do you think is best?
00:35 Let us know in the comments!
00:49 Before we continue, we publish content all week long.

00:57 Killzone
01:08 The Halo killer.
01:09 Well, not so much, but Killzone was a great first attempt from Playstation and Guerrilla
01:14 Games to make a first person shooter.
01:16 Killzone set itself apart from the competition by being set after a nuclear war on Earth.
01:22 With Earth looking like hell, the world government created the United Colony Nations, with the
01:27 goal to invade other planets to create human colonies.
01:31 While Killzone was praised for its excellent audio and visuals, it lacked a bit when it
01:35 comes to enemy AI and a handful of technical issues.
01:40 Despite not being the Halo killer most were hoping Killzone was going to be, the game
01:44 spawned a slew of sequels with each entry being better than the last.
01:53 SOCOM 2 US Navy Seals
02:07 When it comes to tactical military games, SOCOM is a bona fide classic.
02:11 The PS2 received 3 games in the SOCOM series, and while all are great, SOCOM 3 is probably
02:17 the better of the trilogy.
02:18 With 12 missions set around the world, SOCOM 2 has a stressful yet rewarding layout with
02:23 a multitude of bonus objectives.
02:26 With SOCOM being more grounded and tactical, you'll be graded on your teamwork, stealth,
02:31 and completed objectives.
02:33 SOCOM 2 also has amazing online play, which was rather rare back in the day.
02:38 The online play puts two teams of 8 going head to head using all the tactical skills
02:42 they've learned in the campaign to claim victory.
02:52 Twisted Metal Black
03:03 Cars with guns, killer clowns, and a heavy metal soundtrack.
03:07 Twisted Metal Black is one of the two Twisted Metal games on the PS2, alongside the port
03:12 of the PSP game, Twisted Metal, head on.
03:15 In Black, we see the story unfold through vignettes that shed some light on the characters'
03:19 dark and troubled past.
03:21 It took the series in a more mature direction compared to the earlier games.
03:26 However, the core gameplay is still here.
03:28 Cars equipped with guns and an all-out vehicular combat brawl.
03:39 Sly 2, Band of Thieves
03:48 No debate, this second installment was the pinnacle of this beloved sucker punch franchise,
03:54 and it's easy to see why.
03:55 In Sly 2, you're still doing what thieves do, sneaking around while looking for valuables.
04:00 Sly 2 took everything the first game did and built upon it.
04:04 With some new additions to the stealth mechanics, breaking and entering had never felt so fun.
04:09 However, we don't just play as Sly, since the duo of Bentley and Murray join us on each
04:13 caper, with their own diverse range of moves to help us get away with the goods.
04:23 Ico
04:32 There is something truly spectacular about Ico.
04:35 The game oozes in minimalist world-building combined with intricate puzzles.
04:39 We play as Ico, a young boy dead-set on saving his friend Yorda from her imminent doom.
04:45 Ico doesn't shove a story down your throat.
04:48 In fact, that's what makes it amazing.
04:50 Every floor and encounter in the dark gloomy castle helps players interpret the narrative
04:55 on their own.
04:56 All the movement feels deliberate.
04:58 Sure, there's platforming and combat, but compared to other games, every jump or swing
05:02 of the sword feels real and meaningful.
05:05 Ico is often overlooked, but with the unique and somewhat simplistic design, it still feels
05:10 fresh even compared to today's games.
05:20 Jak & Daxter - The Precursor Legacy
05:33 The more edgy of the three family PS2 mascots, Jak & Daxter - The Precursor Legacy was a
05:38 great jumping point for the series.
05:41 In order to reverse Daxter's transformation, the duo have to collect power cells and ultimately
05:46 stop Gaal Echaron before he awakens the Dark Echo Sage.
05:50 While Jak & Daxter is your typical 3D platformer of the time, the one-sided banter from Daxter
05:56 brings much-needed comic relief to the game.
06:05 There are two more Jak & Daxter games and a racing spin-off on the PS2, but the first
06:10 game felt more streamlined and stuck to the 3D platforming compared to others.
06:15 Plus, as a collect-a-thon, it's hard to beat.
06:25 Gran Turismo 3 - A-Spec
06:33 The PS1 graced us with one of the best simulation racing series ever with the introduction of
06:38 Gran Turismo.
06:40 Gran Turismo 3 took everything the first two games pioneered and tuned it into one of the
06:45 best racing sims ever.
06:47 Think of it like having a Toyota Corolla and upgrading to a Supra.
06:52 Gran Turismo 3 still has the iconic License Challenge, Arcade Mode, and Simulation Mode.
06:58 It was also the first in the series to bring the popular F1 racing to the game.
07:02 Even to this day, Gran Turismo 3 feels and looks amazing, which is thanks to the amazing
07:07 feel of each car.
07:15 Ratchet & Clank - Up Your Arsenal
07:26 Just like Jak & Sly, Ratchet & Clank was one of the more family-friendly mascots for the
07:30 PS2, possibly even being the biggest of the three as we're still seeing games in the series
07:36 to this day.
07:37 There were a total of five Ratchet & Clank games on the PS2, and all were amazing.
07:42 However, Up Your Arsenal is probably the best.
07:45 Dr. Nefarious is up to no good and is turning everyone into robots, and it's up to Ratchet
07:50 & Clank, with the help of the Galactic Rangers, to stop him.
07:54 The Ratchet & Clank games are known for having crazy, silly, over-the-top weapons, and the
07:58 third entry is no different.
08:00 Load up your Rhino and go wild.
08:12 Shadow of the Colossus - Up Your Asse
08:21 Just like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus is top-notch when it comes to worldbuilding and storytelling
08:26 with minimal dialogue and exposition.
08:30 In order to save his beloved from death, Wander must traverse and eventually slay giant
08:34 beasts known as Colossi, with each having unique weak points, while all Wander can do
08:39 is run, climb, and chip away at their massive stature.
08:43 In between these gauntlets of boss battles, we're free to explore an empty landscape,
08:48 but filled with immense beauty.
08:50 Shadow of the Colossus truly flipped the perspective on what a game could be, and even by today's
08:55 standards, it's viewed as one of the strongest examples of how video games can be art.
09:08 God of War 2 - Revenge
09:17 Revenge is truly the best medicine.
09:19 After being betrayed by Zeus, Kratos seeks revenge on him as well as the rest of Olympus.
09:24 But first, he's got to hunt down the Sisters of Fate to alter his destiny and prevent his
09:29 death.
09:30 God of War 2 kept the over-the-top bloody hack-and-slash action, puzzles, and grandiose
09:35 boss battles from its predecessor, but improved just about everything along the way.
09:41 God of War 2 is a wild adventure with huge set pieces and no shortage of enemies to rip
09:46 and tear through with the blades of chaos.
09:49 Put it all together, and you might just have the best first-party PS2 game.
