00:02 - Welcome everybody, Justin Bell here with Motor Trend
00:08 from the IAA Auto Show in Frankfurt, Germany.
00:11 We're actually here for the reveal of Land Rover's
00:14 most durable and capable four by four,
00:17 the all new 2020 Defender.
00:19 Now of course, who doesn't love the Defender?
00:22 It's been a part of the global automotive landscape
00:25 quite literally for decades,
00:26 but we haven't seen a new one since 1997.
00:29 So what do you say, let's take a look at the SUV
00:32 that's most definitely been worth the wait.
00:34 The Defender will be available in two models,
00:37 the 90, which is the two door,
00:39 and the 110, which is the four door,
00:40 which you can see behind me.
00:41 And that was really the key message here.
00:43 How do you retain the values, the DNA of the Defender
00:46 that we love with the sensibilities of a modern vehicle?
00:49 Well, they did that with keeping the lines
00:51 really vertical and horizontal.
00:53 As you can see, the overhang over each corner
00:56 is kept to a minimum.
00:57 An example of this here in the front lamp cluster
01:00 is how simple it is in its execution,
01:03 but obviously very complicated in the technology beneath.
01:06 And the same goes at the rear of the Defender.
01:09 The lamps are embedded into the bodywork,
01:12 very clean, geometric, and actually quite simple.
01:15 The two door Defender 90 comes with a hybrid
01:18 three liter inline six turbocharged
01:21 with electric boost engine generating 395 horsepower.
01:25 The four door Defender 110 comes with either
01:28 the hybrid three liter inline six turbocharged
01:30 with electric boost engine,
01:32 or a gas two liter inline four turbocharged engine
01:36 that generates 296 horsepower.
01:38 All of the new Defenders will be built ready to off-road,
01:41 utilizing a short long arm suspension on the front
01:44 with double wishbone twin lower links
01:47 and an integral link suspension in the rear.
01:49 All four wheels will have independent suspension.
01:52 When you carry the Defender name,
01:54 you're expected to have all those
01:56 legendary off-road capabilities.
01:58 And certainly the new 2020 Defender doesn't disappoint.
02:01 It can do anything and more than the Defender ever has.
02:05 As you'd expect inside the Defender,
02:07 there are all the latest luxuries,
02:09 quality of material, build quality, fit and finish,
02:12 but make no mistake about it,
02:14 this vehicle intends business.
02:17 Everywhere you look, there are grab handles
02:19 in places that I've never seen them before.
02:22 But in that mix, that blend of technology and functionality,
02:26 they have their latest PV system here.
02:29 It's an enhanced, not just infotainment,
02:33 the navigation is faster.
02:34 And as you know, on all Land Rovers, this controls,
02:37 this is the brain of the entire vehicle.
02:40 Now, the 110 that I'm sitting in right now
02:42 is available as a five seat or a six seat.
02:46 You may ask yourself, where is that six seat?
02:47 Well, it goes right here.
02:50 As is distinctly Land Rover,
02:52 you can as an option in both the 90 and the 110
02:55 have the middle jump seat.
02:57 How cool is that?
02:58 We definitely live in an era where the SUV is more popular,
03:02 relevant and in demand than ever before,
03:04 which makes the timing of the launch
03:07 of the 2020 Defender Land Rover absolutely perfect.
