Starmer congratulates Sarah Edwards on Tamworth result

  • last year
Sir Keir Starmer has paid a visit to Tamworth to congratulate party activists and newly-elected MP Sarah Edwards on overturning a Tory majority of more than 19,000.
Hailing the result in the Staffordshire seat as a piece of history, Sir Keir said: “What you have seen here replicates what's going on across the country - people are fed up to the back teeth with 13 years of decline under this government.”

00:04 It's quite something. I mean we've worked incredibly hard. I'm very, very proud of all of the team and the campaign team
00:10 and everybody that's turned out for Labour and said that they want change.
00:15 It is an absolutely amazing flag to be flying. People are fed up with the Conservatives
00:19 and they have proved that here in Tamworth by voting for a fresh start.
00:23 And so I'd like to thank everybody here for all the energy that they've put into this campaign,
00:28 the positivity, the way that we have given people a real choice
00:32 and I think it sets the tone for the general election that we hope is coming very soon.
00:37 So I would like to introduce the leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer.
00:41 [Applause]
00:44 People told me that it was not possible to win this seat in this by-election and you absolutely smashed it.
00:51 What a result, what a piece of history that you have been part of.
00:54 And I think what you've seen here replicates what's going on across the country.
00:58 People are fed up to the back teeth with 13 years of decline under this government.
01:04 They want a fresh start. They want to go forward a positive case with a changed Labour Party.
01:10 We accept that victory humbly and go on from here to make the case across the country
01:16 to usher out 13 years of decline and bring in a positive Labour government and a decade, I hope, of national renewal.
01:25 Thank you all for everything you've done.
01:27 [Applause]
