Dominic Scurr reflects on Newcastle United's Champions League group stage defeat to Borussia Dortmund at St James' Park.
Transcript
00:00 Newcastle United beaten 1-0 by Boosia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage here at St. James's Park tonight
00:06 Felix Nemecha with the only goal of the game
00:09 Close fourth game for the most part Eddie Howe actually described it afterwards as a lesson for his side
00:15 and it probably was a little bit of a reality check after the
00:19 Sort of hard and pointed AC Milan in the sort of fairytale game last time out in the Champions League against PSG
00:26 Where probably couldn't get much better than that and yeah, they came up against the seasoned
00:31 experienced and
00:34 very solid Dortmund team tonight Newcastle and
00:37 there wasn't an
00:40 awful lot to choose between the teams I thought Dortmund certainly and
00:45 would have better team in the first half came a new castle with a bit of intensity pace on the break and
00:52 Got the reward on the stroke of halftime after Newcastle lost the ball sort of sent a circle
00:58 Anthony Gordon just couldn't quite pick out Callum Wilson and
01:01 Got tackled in then Newcastle the midfield didn't track any run Felix Nemecha decent finish into the corner
01:10 But yeah, Newcastle probably had Nick Pope to thank as well
01:13 and it was only 1-0 at halftime a brilliant double save in the first half and
01:19 Newcastle big blows also Alexander Sack going off early on with a groin injury
01:24 Then Jacob Murphy coming on and then going off five minutes later with a dislocated shoulder. So very concerning for him
01:32 And yeah
01:33 Disappointing night on the whole for Newcastle who I don't think were with that bad
01:37 But they weren't at the best tonight and Eddie Howe said if you're not at the best
01:41 Not at your best in the Champions League you get punished for that
01:44 But Huffton puffed in the second half Callum Wilson had a great chance to equalize great save from the goalkeeper
01:49 Wilson also hit the bar Anthony Gordon also hit the bar
01:52 So yeah, Newcastle could probably count themselves slightly unlucky that they didn't get a point tonight
01:57 But for Dortmund it was a case of getting the goal at the right time and then protecting that lead and they did that
02:02 with experience and
02:05 Picked up the points and now it's a really really tight Champions League group
02:08 Newcastle level on points with Dortmund on four PSG top but because Dortmund beat Newcastle tonight
02:14 They go into the next round places. So yeah all to play for moving forward
