00:00 What'd you find, bud?
00:01 - I don't know.
00:02 - You want some help?
00:03 (cat meows)
00:05 Got some cat food.
00:06 I left the dog at home.
00:08 And we'll see how this cat is doing.
00:11 He's waiting.
00:12 He's waiting for me right there.
00:13 Hey, bud.
00:15 Wait, you're not the same cat.
00:18 Come on, bud.
00:20 It's okay.
00:21 As I followed the cat, I realized that he wasn't alone.
00:24 Oh, there's another one.
00:27 I had actually stumbled upon a cat colony.
00:29 And a few minutes later, I met Liz.
00:32 People will ask me how many cats I have,
00:35 and always a complicated answer.
00:37 Liz is like the neighborhood cat whisperer,
00:40 and she's been taking care of this cat colony
00:42 for more than 10 years.
00:44 They do all feel like mine.
00:47 I love all of them as much as my indoor cats.
00:50 They sometimes greet me more enthusiastically
00:53 than my cats when I get home.
00:55 Hi sunshine.
00:56 Hi, you.
00:57 Are you ready?
00:59 There are about a dozen cats in this colony,
01:01 and they each have their own little personalities.
01:04 Jacques is the Romeo of my cat colony.
01:09 Jacques has had three girlfriends.
01:11 He becomes more social when he has a girlfriend.
01:14 Norma is our resident crazy girl.
01:19 When I took her to the vet,
01:20 they thought her name Sweet Pea was ironic
01:23 because she was terrible.
01:24 Fred, he is the oldest.
01:28 Neighbors on the block say he could be 15, 16 years old.
01:33 When I first moved here, there was easily 30 cats.
01:38 None of them were TNR.
01:40 And Liz helped about 25 of those get adopted.
01:43 The only cats that remain are the ones
01:45 that are too feral to live indoors.
01:48 So living in this cat colony is the best option for them.
01:52 This is where they were born.
01:53 They've lived outside their entire lives.
01:56 This is what they know.
01:57 They're like family to each other,
01:59 and the community keeps them fed and healthy.
02:02 Somebody left them a house.
02:04 Liz went on to tell me that the lot is privately owned,
02:07 and there is a new construction happening
02:10 right on this lot.
02:11 Unfortunately, they're gonna have to move the cats
02:13 and need all the help they can get from the community.
02:16 So to help them get the word out,
02:18 I'm redesigning their flyers.
02:19 I'm adding a QR code that people can scan with their phones
02:27 to help fundraise or simply keep up with their story.
02:30 Pretty soon, we saw more people helping out,
02:38 and I'm confident that with this community,
02:42 these cats will continue to be well taken care of.
02:46 I talked to so many people who are coming over,
02:49 like, just enjoying them.
02:52 Cats are a part of New York City,
02:54 and they should be embraced,
02:56 and I will help you with the cats
02:58 until there aren't any more.
03:00 You see all the squirrels?
03:03 Where is everybody?
03:06 Those are cat butts.
03:07 (laughs)
