00:02 Plans for a new East Midland Combined Authority devolution deal have taken a step closer
00:08 after Parliament gave the green light with key legislation to move the scheme forward.
00:11 The levelling up and regeneration bill has been granted royal assent after it completed its
00:16 passage through Parliament, paving the way for the creation of a combined authority
00:21 with the region's first mayoral elections to take place in May next year.
00:24 Local councils across the East Midlands would not be scratched or merged under the deal
00:29 and would still oversee many public services, but the new combined authority would deal with
00:34 broader issues like transport, regeneration and employment. Even though Derbyshire County
00:39 Council leader Barry Lewis supports the devolution deal, he has stated that he's not keen on the
00:44 introduction of the mayoral role, despite the fact he's put himself forward as a candidate for the
00:49 position. Councillor Lewis said, "This is a key milestone on the road to agreeing plans to bring
00:54 in £38 million a year for the East Midlands and move major decision making to the people
00:58 who know our communities best rather than Westminster." Derbyshire County Council,
01:04 Nottinghamshire County Council, Derby City Council and Nottingham City Council will now decide whether
01:09 to move forward devolution plans, with decisions expected before the end of the year.
01:13 Officers have launched an investigation after several pieces of expensive jewellery were stolen
01:20 from a Derbyshire property. Derbyshire Police are investigating after a burglary occurred at a
01:25 property in Main Road, Hathersedge at around 7pm on Sunday. Items taken include gold and silver
01:31 jewellery and two valuable watches. Officers are following several lines of inquiry and anyone who
01:36 is in the area at the time or has CCTV footage or has been offered items for sale are encouraged to
01:42 come forward.
