00:00 - Didn't you want Brad to keep those draft picks?
00:02 - No.
00:03 - Didn't you want him to keep those picks?
00:06 You didn't want him to give away two first round picks.
00:09 No, Josue, come on.
00:11 - This is what it looks like when your GM goes all in, Max.
00:14 All right, he put all the chips on the table.
00:16 Yup, he said, yup, yup, this is it.
00:19 Taylor, Brown, this is it.
00:21 This is as good as it's gonna get.
00:22 Y'all better get it done.
00:24 - I'm out.
00:25 I'm like they say in the casino,
00:26 when I'm playing Texas Hold 'Em,
00:29 I'm all in, you're going, whoa.
00:31 I'm all in.
00:32 Look at your hand and go.

01:09 - All right, another episode of the Cedric Maxwell Podcast.
01:14 I am Josue Pavone.
01:15 He is Cedric Maxwell, the boss of Celtics.
01:17 Kicked off the regular season and man, already 2-0.
01:21 I know it's early, Max.
01:22 I know Celtics fans are excited,
01:24 but we're gonna talk them through
01:26 what went through Friday night.
01:27 The home opener, of course, the Boston Celtics
01:29 opening up against the Miami Heat.
01:32 I mean, the season started in New York,
01:33 but to see them tip things off in Boston
01:36 against a team that they lost to
01:38 in the Eastern Conference Finals,
01:39 it was still special though, right, Max?
01:41 I mean, these are two very slightly different teams,
01:43 but at the same time,
01:44 that passion was certainly still there.
01:46 - Yeah, it was.
01:47 And it's really strange
01:49 because I think in the last eight or nine games,
01:52 the home team hasn't really won games.
01:55 It's been more about the road team.
01:57 - The road team, yeah.
01:58 - And look for a while, for a minute,
02:01 you could watch the Celtics, the way they were playing,
02:03 they had some difficulty.
02:05 Jalen Brown started out a little shaky with the handle
02:08 and people were already up in arms.
02:11 We threw one away and then threw another one away
02:14 and then threw,
02:14 then you had four turnovers at one point.
02:17 But then he got his act together
02:18 and he knocked down some shots, hit some big shots.
02:21 Brissett came in off the bench, he was really good.
02:24 He was a high energy type guy.
02:28 So, you know, you look at Joe Mazzullo,
02:31 people said, "Well, where's your bench?"
02:34 Well, the opportunity is gonna be there
02:36 for those guys who are going to be able to play
02:39 like the Brissetts,
02:41 like the Peyton Pritchett's of the world.
02:44 They're gonna get their opportunities
02:45 and will they cash in?
02:46 That's gonna be huge,
02:47 but overall, it was good performance.
02:50 I think people were excited about the big fella.
02:55 They get, it seemed like they get more excited right now
02:57 when they talked about Przingis,
02:59 when he had his ovation when he came in
03:01 and Drew Holliday still learning his offense.
03:05 You said that before, learning his offense,
03:08 learning where he fits in.
03:09 But the thing he had, he had 10 rebounds in that game.
03:13 And one in particular I remember was a huge rebound.
03:17 They was able to get away from Kevin Love
03:19 and the Suffolks way to get a little bit more separation
03:21 because of that.
03:22 - Right.
03:24 And I always say, man, when this team is playing,
03:27 you know, when the defense is triggering the offense,
03:28 like that's when you know it's gonna be a long night
03:31 for the opposing team.
03:32 And you know what, Miami Heat, they hung around.
03:34 I mean, the Suffolks did finally strike back,
03:38 I felt like, you know, in the before halftime.
03:40 I thought Jalen Brown had a lot,
03:41 had something to do with that,
03:42 especially in the second half,
03:43 but you saw the difference that Brissett made
03:45 when he was grabbing those, what,
03:47 two, three offensive rebounds in the first five minutes.
03:50 I mean, creating those extra opportunities,
03:52 you know, making the Miami Heat defense
03:54 sink right back into the defensive stance.
03:56 I mean, all of that adds up,
03:58 especially against a team like the Miami Heat,
03:59 where they're trying to piggyback off your mistakes.
04:03 You know, when you're giving them,
04:04 when you're giving yourself second chance opportunities
04:06 and you're making them work harder,
04:07 that's when you start to see the cracks.
04:08 And I feel like the Suffolks just capitalizing
04:10 on those opportunities, man.
04:12 That is really the difference when you play Miami.
04:15 Miami plays with the margins.
04:18 Their margins are,
04:19 they're not gonna turn the ball over as much as you.
04:21 They're not gonna let you get second chance opportunities,
04:25 but the Suffolks were able to crack that a little bit
04:27 and get those second chance opportunities
04:29 and make some steals.
04:31 Jalen Brown had the huge steal
04:33 in the third quarter, Suffolks score,
04:36 and then he runs to the pass lane on the inbounds play,
04:39 dunks the basketball,
04:40 and the place just got that much more hyped.
04:44 And so you like that.
04:46 And I don't think Jason Tatum had a Jason Tatum type game
04:50 in a few shots, but he didn't,
04:52 he wasn't like all world.
04:54 So I think it was a combination of,
04:56 it was a good win for a Suffolk team coming home.
04:59 - And that's what I love about this team right now, man.
05:01 I know it's early, like I said at the top,
05:03 but I feel like it's gonna be that type of team
05:05 where like on any given night,
05:07 you don't know who's gonna be leading that team
05:08 to score, right?
05:09 The game, the season opener, it was Tatum, right?
05:12 But Port Sings wasn't that far behind
05:14 and he had a whole lot to do with closing the door
05:16 on his former team in New York, right?
05:18 The 30 point debut for the Celtics, right?
05:21 Tatum lead the way, led the way with 35,
05:23 but then it's Derek White,
05:25 Florida with a triple double against the Miami Heat,
05:27 28 points.
05:29 Man, just giving these dudes the business, man,
05:31 on both ends of the floor, that block against Jimmy.
05:33 - Wait a minute, Josue.
05:37 Didn't you want Brad to keep those draft picks?
05:41 - No.
05:41 - Didn't you want him to keep those picks?
05:44 You didn't want him to give away two first round picks.
05:47 No, Josue, come on.
05:49 - This is what it looks like
05:50 when your GM goes all in, Max, all right?
05:53 He put all the chips on the table.
05:55 Yup, he said, yup, yup, this is it.
05:57 Tatum, Brown, this is it.
05:59 This is as good as it's gonna get.
06:00 Y'all better get it done.
06:02 - I'm like they say in the casino
06:04 when I'm playing Texas Hold'em,
06:07 I'm all in, you're going, whoa, whoa.
06:09 - I'm all in.
06:10 - Look at your hand and go,
06:12 oh yeah, this guy's bluffing or he got something.
06:15 And I look at the subject team,
06:17 this isn't a bluff team.
06:19 This is a really good basketball team from top to bottom.
06:23 I like the way they're coached.
06:25 They're bringing in new mouthpieces
06:28 like the Sam Cassell's of the world.
06:30 You got Dan Gundy's in the back office.
06:33 So they have a combination of things
06:36 that are going really well for this team.
06:38 And the only thing that strikes fear in me
06:42 is getting everyone to be your main guys out
06:44 for a considerable amount of time.
06:46 If you can stay healthy this year,
06:49 then I think your opportunity goes up 10-fold.
06:52 - That's what I think too, man.
06:54 Because right now I feel like when you look across the NBA
06:56 and teams are just starting to start things back up again,
07:00 it feels like the Southerners are,
07:01 maybe I'm a little biased here.
07:02 We see a little more Southerners more than other teams,
07:04 but they seem a bit ahead.
07:06 They seem ahead of these teams
07:07 that are right out of the gates, you know what I mean?
07:10 In terms of their continuity, in terms of their focus.
07:12 I mean, look, it's still early.
07:14 I still gotta, maybe I should pull up the brakes here.
07:17 - Yeah, you know what Michael Felker would call you?
07:21 He would call you a green teamer.
07:23 - I knew you were gonna say that.
07:24 Yeah, I feel that.
07:26 - Green teamer right now.
07:28 - No, no, because trust me, Max.
07:31 You and Bobby Manning, the green teamers,
07:34 the green teamers there.
07:35 But I think that you have a right to look at this team
07:39 and we'll see how they are in a month.
07:40 Let's judge in a month's period of time,
07:43 see what the record is, see how they're playing.

08:13 So visit fanduel.com/boston and kick off the NFL season.
08:17 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
08:19 - The Washington Wizards, they actually beat the,
08:25 they beat the Memphis Grizzlies, but it was an ugly game.
08:29 Like that's another, I mean,
08:31 the Grizzlies are out to an O and three stars,
08:33 so maybe it's a bad example, but like I'm watching,
08:35 this is, okay, maybe I should've started with this.
08:38 I'm on the league pass thing right now,
08:41 you know, the first week is always free, you know,
08:43 so I'm watching a whole lot of basketball,
08:45 so maybe I'm just, yeah,
08:45 I'm maybe getting too ahead of myself
08:47 because I'm getting to see the other games right away,
08:49 and I'm jumping into it, but this Memphis,
08:54 this Memphis Grizzlies team looked awful.
08:56 If the Celtics go up there,
08:58 oh, they're already there, right?
08:59 You guys already touched out.
09:00 If they beat the brakes off the Wizards,
09:03 then I'm gonna be like, hmm, okay,
09:05 maybe I'm onto something here,
09:06 but if it's a close game, then I'm like,
09:08 all right, Max is right, I'm getting ahead of myself.
09:11 - Yeah, I mean, but road games are always tough anyway.
09:14 So you got road game.
09:15 You got road game coming up, you go home,
09:18 then you got Brooklyn, in Brooklyn,
09:20 you have Toronto, in Toronto,
09:22 so you got some tough games here
09:25 that teams are gonna want to get in
09:27 and they wanna play well.
09:28 So I think you need to look this over,
09:30 and like I said, a month's period of time,
09:32 you give me 30 days here,
09:34 and I can tell you a lot better
09:36 how this team is performing.
09:38 Right now, good, but sample size.
09:43 - Tiny sample size, that's true.
09:46 Yeah, that's true, that's true.
09:48 You know what, Max, you did?
09:49 You gave me your, you tell me about Drew Holliday
09:53 and what he means to this team so far.
09:55 We like what you see so far, but what about Porzingis?
09:57 I mean, he had a good performance against the Heat.
10:00 He did fall out though.
10:02 Those last three, four minutes of the game,
10:03 Al Hofer had to come in, you know,
10:05 finish things out against Bam Adebayo.
10:07 So it's interesting.
10:08 You see him go up against someone like Bam Adebayo.
10:10 You wonder about the Joel Embiid,
10:12 the Jokic of the world.
10:13 What's your take on how he looked against the Heat?
10:15 - Well, Jokic is just,
10:17 if you look at what Porzingis brings to the table,
10:21 he's a seven-footer, and he plays really big.
10:25 And the thing that we liked about him,
10:27 was the fact that we watched him in the paint.
10:30 How many times last year did I scream at you
10:32 when Al Hofer caught the ball in the paint,
10:35 could have turned around for layup,
10:37 but instead of taking the layup,
10:39 threw it out to the corner.
10:40 Al did that again the other day,
10:42 caught the ball in the paint,
10:43 turned around and laid the basketball up.
10:45 I mean, get in the easy basket.
10:47 Porzingis is score first, pass second.
10:52 And I like that when you get a big seven-footer,
10:55 with that mentality in the game,
10:57 in order to shoot the basketball.
10:59 The day I was, matter of fact, getting on the plane the day,
11:01 I was a little upset in Boston,
11:03 because it was a little bit rainy out there.
11:06 And as I'm about to get on the plane,
11:09 you have to go through,
11:10 sometimes you go through a little security,
11:12 where they get your ID and then they'll say,
11:15 "Okay, get on the plane."
11:18 But today, they said, "I need to be checked."
11:21 - Oh, man.
11:22 - And right behind me is Drew Holiday.
11:25 So he asked me to get, I get checked.
11:27 The girl gets to Drew Holiday, tells him,
11:30 "Go ahead, you can get on the plane."
11:31 I was like, "What the hell?
11:32 "Wait a minute, wait a minute.
11:35 "Drew Holiday just got here.
11:37 "How the hell he get checked?"
11:38 - She said, "He's all set, but you."
11:40 - I don't know about you.
11:41 - White was right after me.
11:42 He doesn't get checked.
11:43 I'm like, "What the hell?
11:44 "Am I chopped liver or something?
11:46 "Did I just come in off the boat?
11:49 "What the hell is happening?"
11:51 So I was in hand here.
11:53 He was kind of laughing about it.
11:55 But what I like about him, he's a good dude.
11:58 - I'm sure you had an anime reaction to George.
12:00 - Yeah, he seemed like a real good dude.
12:05 And what I like about him, he's a solid player.
12:07 I don't think you can have with him.
12:11 I don't think that I'm going to have to defend him
12:14 as much as I did with Marcus Smart.
12:18 I think people, whatever it was,
12:20 Marcus Smart polarized people.
12:22 You think about it.
12:23 Marcus Smart was shooting a better percentage right now
12:26 than Drew Holiday is, than he was early.
12:29 But people were not going to give Marcus Smart a break.
12:33 If he took a wide open jump shot,
12:36 people would go ballistic if he missed it.
12:38 And even sometimes when he made it, they'll go,
12:41 "He shouldn't have taken that shot."
12:42 He's wide open.
12:44 But hopefully this year, that's the last thing
12:47 we'll have to do is defend a guy like Drew Holiday,
12:50 the way he plays the game.
12:52 - Hopefully that's not the case.
12:53 And I just think the two players,
12:57 they'll never get the fair share of like,
12:59 the situation between Marcus, between his fan base,
13:03 compared to what Drew is in right now,
13:04 I just feel like there's a no-lose situation for Drew.
13:07 - He has a grace period right now.
13:12 - Right.
13:13 - That Marcus Smart, that whatever it was,
13:15 whoever Marcus Smart peed on their dog
13:17 or peed on their French porch,
13:19 you know, now he can let it go
13:21 because Marcus is on the year.
13:24 And I feel that with Drew Holiday, the way he plays,
13:27 because as much as I love Marcus as a defender,
13:31 Drew Holiday, I think, is on that same page.
13:34 You know, some of the things he was able to do,
13:37 shut people down, make defensive plays like that,
13:40 that to me was just so cool out there watching.
13:43 And here's a young kid in his prime right now
13:45 that the Suffolks can have for a long time
13:47 if they decide to go ahead and give him extension.
13:52 But then you look at Derek White.
13:53 You think Derek White's looking at chomping at the bit,
13:55 I think he has another year that you have him down,
13:59 but Derek White's another guy
14:00 who can be very valuable for you.
14:02 So, Suffolks know they're gonna have to spend the money,
14:05 but I think right now, what I like is the product,
14:09 the way they're playing.
14:10 I haven't heard anybody say, "Oh my God, not yet,
14:14 'cause I know it's gotta be coming soon."
14:15 Joe Mazzullo, they called timeout.
14:18 Oh my God, what are we gonna do?
14:20 Didn't call timeout.
14:21 We should've called timeout.
14:23 (laughing)
14:25 - No excuses this time.
14:27 - Yeah, so, I think there's a good atmosphere out there,
14:32 the way things are so far.
14:33 We'll see again tomorrow when the Suffolks play the Wizards.
14:38 We'll get an opportunity to see.

16:42 - Yeah, no, no question, man.
16:43 I mean, I just feel like the entire,
16:48 the Suns already got most of the nationals' attention, right?
16:53 The national media's attention, NBA fans,
16:56 because everyone's like, man, these guys,
16:58 they're top six heavy, right?
17:01 That's already a narrative.
17:02 Not just here, right?
17:03 It's just like, man, these guys got six starters.
17:06 And it's getting to the point where it's like,
17:07 okay, you got a couple of guys coming off your bench,
17:09 whether it's Pritchard, whether it's Reset,
17:12 you know, Porfir has been anchoring the bench lately,
17:15 and that's a force to be reckoned with, man.
17:18 Like, you look across the league,
17:19 a lot of teams just don't have that same type of balance
17:21 in the sense of such a strong five
17:23 that you have a six that you can put in and out of there.
17:27 You know, like they said, you guys have six starters,
17:30 and then, you know, you add the chip
17:32 on these guys' shoulders.
17:33 I mean, Drew Holiday is just one guy.
17:35 We think about his championship pedigree
17:37 and what happened with Milwaukee, right?
17:39 He's like, okay, you guys did better off with Dane.
17:42 All right, well, let's see what happens
17:43 next time we meet up, you know what I mean?
17:44 Like he said, it should be fun, you know?
17:46 And then you add Tatum and Brown,
17:48 who have already been to the NBA finals a couple seasons.
17:50 - No, that's-- - And everyone's like,
17:52 this is it, this is your year.
17:54 - That sounds like one of them comments
17:55 you got from Bobby Manning or something.
17:57 Or Bobby Manning. - What do you mean?
17:59 - Yeah, but you or Bobby Manning went up to, you know,
18:02 Drew and said, so, Drew, what do you think, you know?
18:05 What's going on in Milwaukee?
18:06 He'll say, we'll see, we'll see what--
18:08 That sounds like something both you guys would do.
18:10 - I mean, it's what he said immediately.
18:12 Drew said, hey, it should be fun.
18:13 When he faces Milwaukee again, he said, it should be fun.
18:16 And, you know, you think about what happened before
18:19 and that podcast he did and how excited he was
18:23 for his upcoming season, that's part of the business, right?
18:25 But at the same time, you got a chance now
18:28 to go right back and be like, hey--
18:30 - You know what?
18:31 - This could have been us.
18:32 We could have kept this thing going,
18:34 but hey, I don't have to stop you now.
18:36 I don't have to be the one to prevent you guys
18:37 from getting back to the fight.
18:38 - Well, here's the thing, would really be good,
18:41 and I'm sure we can get our top craft engineers,
18:46 as long as we're not going to Atlanta.
18:51 You know, that's his home base.
18:53 But maybe we can get him to input the comment
18:58 that Drew made from his podcast.
19:00 We can insert that into what we're talking about
19:03 to give us even more ammunition.
19:06 Yeah, man, I like the prospect.
19:11 I like the prospect.
19:12 Again, health, if they stay healthy.
19:15 Porzingis stays healthy.
19:17 Managing guys' minutes.
19:21 It should be a really good season.
19:24 - Yeah, man, it's different, as they say.
19:27 This year is different.
19:28 We'll see, we'll see.
19:29 The season carries on.
19:30 Cedric Maxwell podcast, you already know.
19:32 Head to Fanduel.com/Boston.

19:41 Head over to Fanduel.com/Boston.
19:44 Max, what's up?
19:45 What's on tap for DC, man?
19:46 What do you got?
19:47 You got any special restaurants you have to hit up
19:49 or anything?
19:50 What are you gonna do?
19:51 - No, nothing special.
19:53 You know, we're here tomorrow.
19:55 What is, tomorrow Halloween or is tonight Halloween?
19:57 Which one is it?
19:58 - No, you got a couple more days.
20:00 Tuesday's Halloween.
20:02 - All right, so that'll have people all dressed up here
20:04 tomorrow at the game.
20:05 So I don't look for anything that, you know,
20:09 I've been here enough.
20:11 This is year 29 now as a broadcaster.
20:14 So I don't look for anything in the nation's capital.
20:17 I happen to like it.
20:18 I'm at the Great Hotel, the Four Seasons,
20:20 right in Georgetown.
20:22 Some good shopping tomorrow.
20:23 I'll do that.
20:24 Just kind of hang out and get on the plane
20:26 and come back to Boston and get ready for the next couple
20:30 of games coming in.
20:32 It should be nice.
20:33 One note that I'd like to shoot out there
20:36 would be about our guy.
20:38 You and I talked about Montreux's Harold,
20:41 that the 76ers have waived.
20:44 That would be interesting.
20:47 That would be interesting 'cause he brings that other side,
20:52 that nastiness that I like from players
20:56 because he's had his run-ins with Joel Embiid,
20:58 other people, Giannis.
21:00 I like what he brings to the table.
21:02 So maybe, maybe there might be a slot in there someplace.
21:06 You know, Will and Dylan Brad,
21:07 Brad ain't scared to go out and mix it up and do some things.
21:10 So we'll see.
21:11 - Yeah, he fits the bill.
21:12 Yeah, he fits the bill for sure, man.
21:14 That's a good call.
21:15 That's a great call.
21:16 All right, we'll see what happens for sure.
21:18 Max, actually, before we get out of here,
21:20 Paul Pierce in the building for the home opener.
21:23 I got a chance to kick it with him for a little while.
21:25 We were walking all over the place looking for Max
21:27 and the last place I thought to look was
21:29 Max sitting in his broadcast chair
21:32 about 45 minutes before tip-off.
21:34 That's the last place I thought you would be,
21:35 but that's where you were, man.
21:36 I'm glad we found you.
21:37 What did Paul have to say to you when you guys embraced?
21:39 - Still Paul Pierce.
21:41 He's the friend that won't go home.
21:45 You know, he's the guy that comes to the house going,
21:47 damn, Joe's choice is really nice.
21:49 But you know, I love the fact that he's back.
21:52 It gives him opportunity.
21:54 Antoine was there.
21:56 They've talked a little bit about maybe
21:59 getting back involved in coaching.
22:00 So I think there's some,
22:02 when you bring back people who were,
22:05 played with the team,
22:06 who were champions with the team,
22:08 it gives you more of a sense of family and a connection.
22:13 And I see Tatum, I see Brown gravitate towards Paul.
22:16 They come to him right after the game,
22:17 right after the win, whatever.
22:19 So I think it's a really cool thing when that happens.
22:23 - For sure, man.
22:24 Yeah, man, it's one generation passes towards down
22:26 to another it feels like.
22:27 But when you look at these guys working out
22:30 and hanging out in the gym together for over a month,
22:32 you feel like something special is going on.
22:33 For Paul to come back to town just to kind of kick things
22:36 off, kick the season off for these guys,
22:38 I think it shows how special this group is right now, man.
22:41 So I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.
22:43 It's still the very beginning of the regular season,
22:45 still plenty of basketball to digest
22:49 before we break it all down.
22:50 Before we get too excited,
22:51 I'm sure Max is gonna make sure I'm keep my,
22:53 keep me level-
22:54 - Pump the brakes, Josue, pump the brakes.
22:56 - Keep me level-headed throughout the season.
22:58 That's right.
22:58 - Pump the brakes.
22:59 - He's Cedric Maxwell.
23:00 I'm Josue Pavone.
23:01 It's been an episode of the Cedric Maxwell podcast.
23:03 We'll see you guys next week.
