00:00Celtics beat is brought to you by price picks and the game time app
00:06What's up, everyone? Welcome in new addition to Celtics beat and well if if this were I guess like it
00:13I don't know if anyone watched the the show friends back when that was on for a decade pretty popular
00:18I think you've heard of it. They used to organize all of their shows
00:21They used to self, you know
00:23individually title each episode and be like the one where this the one where the everyone was the one where
00:29So if we did that here on this show
00:31This would be the one where the Celtics are still better than the Knicks and the Timberwolves
00:35So we're gonna talk about a trade involving Carl Anthony Towns and Julius Randall Dante DiVincenzo as well
00:42A lot of good stuff, but hey media day. It's behind us training camp
00:46It is underway a trip to Dubai right around the corner
00:49I have no idea if our guest here Adam Hilsbach is making that trip
00:54But I do know that he went to Paris for the Olympics
00:56So he's a world traveler as it is Adam. Welcome in bud. How are you? Good, man? So I am going and
01:02Goodbye, it's Abu Dhabi two different places
01:05Is it?
01:07They're a hundred miles apart. Oh, that's pretty close. Yeah
01:11It wasn't like yeah, so that's three continents over at him
01:14Yeah, you're in the same you're in the right vicinity, but yeah, I'll be my first time there. I'm flying out on Monday
01:21Nice
01:23This I just paid I just paid a hundred ninety dollars of my own money not not to get reimbursed to ensure
01:30It's a 14-hour flight. It was $190 to ensure that the seat next to me will be empty
01:37Money well spent money well spent. Absolutely
01:41Corrected me on this on the location of these games until now. How long have I been saying Dubai?
01:46It's it takes a real journalist to come on and be like as a matter of fact, I mean look a hundred miles significant
01:53I could I could leave this state in a hundred miles easily
01:56See, yeah, it's Abu Dhabi, which has been described to me as Dubai's
02:00I guess the more Las Vegas II won Abu Dhabi is a little more low-key
02:04It's how people have said it but I have no idea. Is it like the for for Hawaii people?
02:09Is it like the kawaii as compared to you know, Maui something like that? I don't know. I don't know any Hawaii cops
02:15So it's a little more chill, we're just try I thought we were just naming extravagant places. All right
02:21It's great to have you here with us. We do need to talk about that trade that you know, I think
02:26Sort of shook the the NBA world here in the offseason a little bit. It's an interesting trade for both teams
02:32I'm a little bit conflicted in terms of how I feel about it and with regard to you know
02:37How much it really necessarily helped either team so definitely want both of your perspectives on that
02:43I know there were a lot of opinions on social media a lot of I
02:47don't know kind of
02:50It feels strong to say heartbroken Knicks fans
02:53But there were there were a lot of Knicks fans on social media that were in their feelings after this trade
02:57I think sorry to see Julius Randle go as
03:01Someone that helped put them where they are even if he is not the star of the show anymore
03:07So all of those things like I said on the way, but let's let's get into you know
03:12You've been writing for anyone that hasn't seen Adams articles of late
03:16Obviously, you know subscribe to you know
03:18Get behind the paywall there in the Boston Globe or read him in the actual newspaper or you know
03:22Check out people aggregating him on social media do whatever you want to do. But either way, he's been out there
03:27He's been busy. He's been writing about Jalen Browns offseason
03:31Baylor Shireman, of course the one of the newest members of the Celtics media camp or I should say media day
03:37Takeaways and and I think sort of the biggest takeaway is something that you and I we were texting about before the show
03:43which is just that
03:46There there's not a lot it's it's sort of it's an unusual time to be covering the Celtics compared to past years
03:53Because there was always that hurdle always that you know, how do we get to?
03:59step X, you know climb over hump Y whatever you want to call it and
04:04Now they've they've done it they've reached the promised land
04:07They have achieved all of all of their dreams as a franchise and now it's okay reset
04:12how do we do it again all the while obviously you have some of the stuff in the background the looming ownership sale the
04:20You know porzingis injury and when is he going to be back?
04:23players looking for
04:25Motivation from different things that happened in their offseason that we've spent so much time on this show talking about
04:31What were your big takeaways from talking to these guys during the annual I'm in the best shape of my life day
04:37it's it's
04:39Added 10 pounds of muscle season. That's it. That's what it up, you know and Baylor Shireman actually said it
04:45I remember turning to some of the writers. I'm like am I gonna do the
04:48Put on 10 pounds of muscle story. I think I have to it's like I used to cover the NFL
04:54That was always the thing too. Oh, yeah
04:5630 pounds of muscle. I'm like your season ended like three months ago. Like what it where is there's 30 pounds of muscle
05:02Just instantly appearing from
05:05But yeah, I know it's like you said it's but it's very
05:08Calm, there's no and the angst is obviously gone
05:12There's no how are we gonna do this? What went wrong?
05:16But really the biggest difference at this start of the year is there's no change. It's just all the same players
05:21It's all the same people like the Celtics have been good. Basically really good for basically a decade
05:27give or take
05:28But almost every year there's been like a significant
05:31change
05:32Whether it be good our true holiday. I'm presenting us last year to Joe Missoula becoming coach the year before that
05:38You know, then you go back to like whatever
05:41You can go down the list Al Horford arrives Kyra Irving Oh arrives
05:46Gordon Hayward arrived, you know one one year after now these big top three draft pips arrived
05:51This is just like the same group that was just completed just completed one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history
05:57With the same coach the same players and they're just gonna go do it again. Basically is their plan
06:02So so they're as far as storylines, there's not much right now
06:05But if you're a Celtics fan, you don't care because you have a team that's favored to win another NBA championship
06:10Yeah, it's it's interesting to me to look at some of the quotes that are coming out about you know, what's different
06:17Even though there's again all the same crew here. How is Joe different?
06:20You know, how is how different our practices and everything? And that's one of the things where I
06:26Think this is difficult for a lot of people
06:28But especially for a guy in Joe Missoula who's in his 30 years a head coach like okay
06:32Now you've won the NBA championship. Now you got to find a different way to motivate these guys, right?
06:37Engaged and I think some of the quotes that are coming out, you know, Lonnie Walker is a little different in terms of that story
06:43He's he's I've never seen I've never met anybody like Joe Missoula, you know
06:46I tried to ask him if he's gonna see a box and one of the boxing fights that it's coming up and he said
06:51I don't like pillow fights or whatever. He just said like it was a great quote. So, you know in in where you're sitting Adam, how
06:59How are how are people trying to make things different and trying to keep this crew together?
07:04How are people trying to make things different and trying to keep this crew from getting complacent because
07:10Sometimes when you've risen to the mountaintop and you've accomplished the hardest thing you've needed to accomplish in your career
07:16Sometimes it's like alright, maybe you know, you take a step back and you and you ease up a little bit
07:21How are that? How is everybody trying to keep that competition that fiery feeling going?
07:26Yeah, I think that kind of remains to be seen
07:28But one thing that has become very clear this week, and this is really a Joe Missoula directive
07:35And you hear talking to players you're talking to him
07:38Impressed arms even off to the side and we're just kind of
07:41Yes in with them a little bit
07:43They are they're not all in on this idea of defending a title and repeating as champions
07:48They want to separate from that completely
07:50This is a new season and a new team and their goal is to win a championship
07:54And they don't want to relate it at all to last year and the challenges of doing it again
07:58And no one's done it since the Warriors
08:00They're trying to block that out completely and they've made that very clear these first few days. I'm not sure
08:07Necessarily the primary reason behind it. Maybe it's just like an extra distraction
08:11You know Joe is a big narrative guy. It sets this narrative of oh, can they be the first can they do this?
08:17We're like no, we're just here to win a championship this year. We're not worried about what happened in the past
08:21Here to win a championship this year. We're not worried about what happened in the past
08:24But that's that's been the biggest take
08:27So far from me
08:28Do you think I mean obviously like the person i'm going to mention?
08:33not the first person by any means in sports coaching history to think this way, but you know for
08:3920 years that was very much a bill belichick ism
08:42You know one role does one year does not roll over in into the next it every year
08:48Is its own entity and you reset and you restart the clock and all of that stuff and you know, obviously
08:54Missoula being a a rhode islander and a new england local i'm sure you know
08:59At least to some degree a patriots fan maybe even a die-hard one
09:01I have no idea but someone that you know has has spent time down there
09:04You know probably got to know bill on some level before his exodus
09:08Uh, do you think it comes from that a little bit and and just sort of the way the patriots carried themselves?
09:14Uh, it's possible. I don't I don't get that sense though
09:17um
09:18to me, it feels like joe is always very aware of
09:21finding any little thing that could
09:23cause added pressure or added distraction
09:26And if there's if a player feels a little ounce of extra pressure to try to do it again
09:31He doesn't want them to feel that
09:33he wants them to feel like they're here to
09:35Be a really good basketball team together and try to win championship together not think about
09:40Becoming the first teams with the warriors to win two in a row
09:43Not thinking about oh, why don't you know, why aren't you doing this that you did last year?
09:46So well, what's what's going on?
09:48He wants this to be a standalone season
09:50And I think that's going to be joe is a big you've seen he's a big themes guy. There's things he hits
09:55Uh throughout a season. It feels like that's going to be a common theme, especially early
09:58He's going to be asked, you know, whatever national media will come in
10:01It's going to be like obviously they didn't have any like losing streaks last year when they do. Oh, you know, what?
10:08How's this compared to?
10:10When you guys made the run past the mavericks, oh, how's this and he's gonna shut that down at some point
10:14He'll shut down cops the last year. I think pretty quickly
10:20Something that evan i've you know what we've been talking on the show
10:23Obviously it's a lot of like summer filler right leading up to the season or even leading up to this point quite frankly
10:29Where the guys are back and talking again, and there were a lot of things that you know, especially olympic driven or you know
10:36Tatum not winning finals mvp
10:38Which you know, he's been pretty vocal recently about wanting to win one of those at some point and being
10:43Uh fairly certain that he's going to there's no lack of confidence and bravado there and and that's fine
10:48There's no criticism of that
10:50Uh, but you know, we've been talking a lot about the all right
10:53Well, you know this quest to win again, and I you know, we can say it joe. Sorry
10:59For you in your mind other than injury because injury is unpredictable
11:03What does trip them up what is something that as you look around the rest of the league and the celtics coming off of
11:10What was truly in many ways?
11:12An historic year. I mean just absolutely demolished the league regular season steamrolled in the playoffs
11:19I mean there were you know, yeah, like the the pacers series was competitive game to game
11:24But it was still a sweep like the the celtics were never really
11:28Pushed last year in the way that obviously
11:32Past celtics teams have been past champions have been so what this year is the thing
11:38That makes them stumble a little if anything
11:41Yeah, I mean obviously you mentioned injuries. That's the most obvious one. But aside from that, uh, I think it would be
11:50The rest of the league existing kind of like I know celtics fans don't want to hear this but there were other
11:56Teams that were hardly at full strength and teams have gotten better this summer
12:00Um, so this didn't really have a big need to get a lot better
12:03But other teams did and I feel like they got better
12:06So there could be new challenges there
12:08And then within their roster
12:11There's there's not many weak spots, but you could say like hey, what if this is the year al horford finally gets old
12:16You know, what if what if this is where it shows?
12:19um
12:21You know, whatever drew holidays
12:22gonna be 35 this year
12:24What if what if drew takes a step back like this is no longer the team for all those years
12:28Oh, they're so young. They're up and coming like they're starting to at least get toward that
12:33You know some of the guys, you know, derrick white's 30 like they're still they're still young
12:36But it's a different phase where it's possible. I would say there's a world
12:40Um where that would start creeping in a little bit. I don't see that happening
12:43But if you're trying to identify things that would be one
12:46Prize picks is america's number one daily fantasy sports app over five million

14:14I mean truly find me a better deal. I'm not sure you can it's guaranteed prize picks run your game
14:21speaking of health, uh, one of the biggest
14:24Things to come out of media day was the health surrounding chris dafts borzingas
14:28Uh, there seems to be a little bit of optimism surrounding his return
14:33To the celtics. I mean, I think a lot of us
14:36Originally were looking, you know, 2025 probably january february somewhere in there for him to get ramped up, you know to to
14:44Normal playing time and and you know getting him back into playing shape so to speak
14:48uh, brad spoke earlier and said that it's possible that he's
14:53Coming back earlier than that and his his progress has been pretty
14:56you know, uh, I would say
14:58Uh either at schedule or slightly ahead of schedule. Have you been able to uncover anything more about
15:04His timeline and when they expect him back
15:07Yeah, i'm sure you guys have noticed over the years. The celtics are not big timeline people
15:12They hate putting them out because then once
15:14A guy doesn't reach it. It's like oh setback
15:17They're like no, so they either don't do timelines or they do big timelines
15:21And it looks like they came back earlier than they really did when they in their head
15:25They knew that was the long end of a timeline
15:27Um, so that's what it kind of sounds like is happening here
15:31He's doing well, like you said he's already started contact workouts. He's on the court again
15:36But there's really no rush, right? Like they're going to be one of the top three seeds in the east
15:42If he probably doesn't play a game this year if we're being honest, uh
15:47They want like anything else like they're going to be careful with al again
15:50I'm sure al's not playing back-to-backs. I bet his minutes are down even a bit from last year
15:54But they feel good about the other guys they have like
15:57You know, they feel good about xavier tillman luke cornett the maya skater
16:01Like they have other guys that they're eager to see
16:04What they can bring?
16:06And also eager to get them valued opportunities because again, you never know when you might need them
16:11You know who knows when you need xavier to hit a big three in a finals game
16:14Then you bring christophe's back
16:16Whenever he's ready, like if he's let's let's say he's ready december 15th
16:20Like let's say he's totally ready. My guess is he comes back like two weeks after that
16:24Uh, just to err on the major side of caution
16:27Well, and and to that end like i've been saying I mean ev i've been saying on this show for three months or two months
16:32Whatever it's been that you know
16:34We've known porzingis was going to miss considerable time
16:36Don't be at all surprised if you don't see this guy until 2025 just because to your point, you know, what's the rush?
16:43What's the need you know the the playoffs are the focus they're not going to care about their seed or anything like that
16:49They've been there. They know what it takes. This group is capable of accomplishing it, you know health in april matters and beyond obviously prior to that
16:57You figure it out you get through so if porzingis as you know, you alluded to is let's say
17:04Ready on the earlier end
17:06Obviously, nobody's going to be pushing him back. It might even be the opposite
17:10It might be so conservative that it's like why don't you you know sort of take your time?
17:14But for him and the way he's wired is he going to be itching to get back out is is you know
17:19Is is he going to be someone that's like, you know, if is he going to be pushing for december one?
17:24Let's say when the organization be perfectly comfortable with christmas
17:28The answer to that is yeah
17:30Did you see the finals last year?
17:31Like the only reason he played in that game five is because he basically was like i'm playing tonight
17:36And then once it was determined you can't make things worse. That was the finals. I mean, this is the regular season
17:41No, I understand but he was like hurt then like he hadn't had surgery yet. He was injured. He was in pain
17:48Like that's not the case now. Um
17:52So that's like that's his mindset he wants to be on the court he said he said it doesn't mean today
17:56you know i'm
17:58Not going to quote him directly, but it was along the lines of yeah, if it's up to me
18:00I'd be out there like really soon
18:03But he also understands the situation
18:05It's not a situation where he's gonna like
18:07You know push back or make a make a stink about it
18:11but of course
18:12Like the second he they say are you just about ready? He's going to want to be out on the court
18:17The other part of it is like like look, this is a guy a lot of them have been fluky and
18:22Uh bad happenstance, but he's had a lot of injuries during his career
18:25So you you you kind of delay that, you know, bring him back whatever january
18:30in a weird way you're kind of
18:32Keeping him sit preserving him a little longer essentially for what like you said for what really matters
18:38Kaufman, I don't know I and
18:41Maybe this is our fault, you know, because we've had so much time to talk about all that
18:44Like you mentioned earlier. It's the summer. We just started like filler, you know what I mean?
18:48Doing a lot of filler for the past couple of months
18:51did we make a big enough deal about
18:53Porzingis's
18:55Ability to play through some significant pain and like really contribute in game five because like you think about I mean we did it
19:01We did at the time for sure. I don't know
19:04I don't know if there's been a summer celebration of
19:07Well, like so like we still talk about the bloody sock game like it happened, you know yesterday that was literally, you know, uh
19:1320 years ago, you know you have
19:15Like one of my favorite storylines like logan mankin's played on a torn acl like all year right for the page
19:21right
19:22Where does he rank in this like it just popped in my head?
19:25Like where does he rank in this pantheon of boston athletes that have sacrificed legitimate pain and suffering?
19:31to to just for the greater good and win a title here, I don't know if we've
19:35Dedicated like feel feel free to disagree obviously, but to me
19:40And I said this at the time
19:41The celtics beat the mavericks with or without porzingis
19:45So I don't think it's it's you know, we're not anywhere close to like the bloody sock level or anything like that
19:51you know, but
19:53at the same time I will readily admit that
19:57When he returned that first game in that first quarter just as a tone setter
20:02and the importance of that moment and
20:05You know the energy in the building and all of that like yeah, that was incredibly significant
20:09I mean that you know, you could say it further pushed things in the celtics direction. Absolutely
20:14But even if it never happened, I think we're still talking about, you know banner 18 in the rear view
20:20I think that's I think that's a good point. It's to me the bigger
20:24return is coming back from the calf strain more than
20:27Uh after the ankle for a game but that was
20:30Like I said set the tone for the series the energy
20:34Like the energy when he got out onto the court was insane
20:36And then he was like, oh, what are you gonna get from him?
20:38And he just dominated the game like just took over
20:41And you're like, okay, these guys are gonna be fine
20:44Yeah, I started seeing somebody reposted a video of
20:48him coming out of the tunnel recently that game game one and how just
20:52Like the the boom that happened when he because the will is real
20:55yeah, it's people like it felt like a wrestling like in
20:59Lou like, you know, obviously topically with the mcmahon documentary coming out
21:02it felt like a
21:03a wrestling moment where like the guys coming out from the back and like the rock or stone cold like
21:08Hits the the titan tron right at the beginning and the whole you have that boom where everybody goes nuts
21:13Like the the footage they're going for that's what they were going for. Yeah. Yeah
21:17Well, you know what? I think it worked boys
21:19I think it worked and we're powered by game time football season. It's here
21:24Don't let people tell you football season's coming because listen the college football season that is I mean literally days away in the nfl season

22:17Some of us do as well and sometimes you look at you see if you're learning to say we want to do today

23:11That is code clns for twenty dollars off your first purchase terms apply again create an account redeem the code. It is
23:19Clns twenty dollars off download the game time app today. What time is it game time? Let's get back to the show
23:27so as far as like you mentioned before himmelsbach the uh,
23:32you know like what potentially trips up the celtics or or what gets in their way of of
23:36You know, we get to get used to saying banner 19 now
23:40The existence of the rest of the league and what other teams have done to try and get on the celtics level or get closer
23:46Narrow the gap, whatever it may be
23:48obviously the knicks who I have
23:51The utmost respect for I mean I I thought
23:54that a celtics knicks
23:56Playoff series last year would have been incredible had we gotten it and you know
24:00Indiana was able to squeak it out obviously and and knock off the knicks
24:04But that I was as injury ravaged as new york was at the time
24:08I still thought I mean boston was going to win in my mind, but I still thought you'd get a fight
24:13You'd get a series, you know brunson and and the way those guys are wired and they're they're mentally tough and physically
24:18They'll bang you around and all of that
24:20They've mixed it up a little bit here now randall. Obviously one of those guys that was not healthy at the time
24:26He's out of the picture. You have carl. Anthony towns come in. I I think this is really interesting
24:31My my initial blush of this trade and dante divincenzo
24:36Is you know, some people are saying well, it's a sell high moment, you know on on him
24:40Maybe I mean, I think he's a really solid player
24:42I had even put a poll out on twitter just for funsies
24:45Like if you're a celtics fan, you could have any one of the three guys that were involved in that trade
24:49Who would you be and it sort of restored my faith in humanity that people didn't just
24:54Immediately flock to the name it like the the leading vote getter was divincenzo
25:00Not towns not randall and I just thought that was awesome because I wholeheartedly agree with it
25:04Which is why I put the poll out
25:05I wanted to see if if people were on the same wavelength the same page as me with that but
25:11my my initial blush and I want both of your opinions of that trade was
25:17I felt like it was the knicks admitting that randall's not a good fit there
25:20I felt like it was the timberwolves admitting that
25:24As far as what towns gives you you've you've hit a ceiling and that he and edwards aren't a perfect match
25:31And we're just going to try something different and maybe it is win-win. Maybe it doesn't make either team exponentially better
25:39Seems like the social media reaction was very pro. This is awesome for the timberwolves
25:44Uh, what uh, what adam obviously starting with you?
25:47I mean, how did you see it? And where does it take us in terms of teams that are trying to compete with boston?
25:54So the some social media reaction is awesome from the timberwolves
25:57like a lot of those I feel like are self-expanse like whenever it's the
26:01The team that's like you're rivaling your division the first reaction. Oh, that was a horrible day for them
26:06Like if you're going social i'll actually like it for the next I think it's a good move
26:10You know who knows right like who knows how it's always going to shake out but to add a seven footer
26:16Who shoots above 40 from three?
26:19Can space the floor for jaylen brunson?
26:22Um, you know when mitchell robinson comes back from his injury
26:25Can play alongside him?
26:27at four
26:29I like the move like I think
26:31You know people like oh, you know divincenzo and randall like like said randall was kind of a clunky fit
26:35They were probably gonna be trading him somewhere
26:37Was there a deal really anywhere where you're gonna get a player back who's better than carl towns? Probably not
26:43um, and I always I always make this comp when like
26:47when there's like a two for one deal like
26:49I don't know if you guys collected baseball cards when you're a kid, but like whenever he
26:52You're trading with your buddy. I'll give you these three guys for your one guy three three. I'm giving you three cards
26:59Yeah deal deal
27:00like
27:01Like that's all well and good
27:03but like all
27:04Deuce those minutes go somewhere. So like is the gap from dante divincenzo to like deuce mcbride so massive
27:11Now deuce mcbride just gets some more minutes. Okay, we've upgraded julius randall to carl towns
27:15Maybe downgrade a little bit here. I think the ultimate upgrade
27:18Is worth it for the next we'll see like nobody knows but I think it's a smart trade
27:23It's something that they you know, they're trying something different. Um, again, you know randall
27:29Is a weird fit kind of with that team and it's kind of been
27:33One of the off-season things that we've poked at right if you're you know trying to create content
27:38It's like okay. What do you do with randall here? You know, this is a team that doesn't look like he fits into with og
27:44uh with again the nova nicks, uh with with brunson and
27:48um
27:49With with bridges and and it just doesn't make a lot of sense as you come off the bench like what happens here
27:54So randall gets to go somewhere. Um where you know, he'll probably come off the bench. Maybe I don't know
27:59I I think it's great for minnesota because I think
28:02By losing carl towns that means more naz read and I think that's really great for the timberwolves
28:07I really think they should be playing that street more anyway
28:10So I think they're going to stumble into that which is great
28:12But it doesn't really affect the celtics that much unless they meet in the finals
28:16Meanwhile the knicks like again, I get the idea of it. This has been sort of an idea
28:20It's been kicked around for a while because of leon rose connection here and worldwide west and just the connection
28:25They have with all the kentucky guys
28:28That are around the nba whether it be devon booker or you know, name your favorite kentucky player
28:32It seems like a lot of them have been tied to the knicks at some point
28:35And so they go out and get carl anthony towns now
28:39I'm curious to see what he looks like with brunson
28:43um
28:44And with a robinson behind him very similar to gobert that can clean up a lot of the junk
28:49Um, he can certainly space the floor. I just don't think carl anthony towns is a particularly smart player
28:54Um, especially when it comes to his foul habits like he fouls all the time
28:59And sometimes in games you can just kind of see him disengage and I don't think the knicks
29:04Are in the knicks fans are are happy with guys that do that
29:08I mean julius randall did that all the time and and he got the knicks fans got on him for that now
29:13You know randall was able to kind of clean up his image. We'll see if towns can do that. That's a huge salary number
29:18with towns
29:19Um, i'm not the biggest cat guy i'm gonna be totally honest with you
29:22I can see the idea of bringing him in get him in a new situation new environment. Maybe it brings something out of him
29:28Um, but I I I don't think as a as a sky that covers the south looks like I just don't know if it makes them
29:35Any different in terms of do I fear them any more than I already did?
29:38No, like I think the mikhail bridges thing moved the needle for me way more than this
29:43And I don't this doesn't necessarily move me at all again for me
29:47I see minnesota side of it and I just like the fact that they get more minutes for naz but from the knicks
29:52That front court is very thin
29:55If robinson gets hurt again
29:58Um, they're in serious trouble. I didn't like the fact that they mortgaged
30:01You know the hartenstein thing to to get bridges and bring back anenobe
30:06They had to kind of give up hartenstein and I thought hartenstein was spectacular for them in the playoffs last year
30:11um
30:13I mean physicality his physicality is one thing but he was a spectacular passer for a guy that size
30:17So, you know, we'll see if cat can move the ball like that. I I just think the way I know nicks fans
30:24He might get on their nerves very quickly with some of the stuff that he does and and
30:28I'm, not sure that's a great fit for cat considering he's going from market in minnesota
30:32That's like hey, you know to one of the most ruthless media markets in america
30:37I don't know if anybody's considered that either at all, but maybe i'm weird confident. What about you? What do you think?
30:44Yeah, I mean again, I I don't think that either team is exponentially better after the trade than it was before the trade
30:51And so it's just sort of the longevity of the season and seeing what they look like come the playoffs
30:55but
30:56you know, i'm i'm more inclined to I I completely agree with the naz read thing as far as minnesota goes and we saw what
31:02He did last year once he really got an opportunity and he's just so much fun to watch
31:05But as you noted, they don't really matter unless they get to the nba finals and the celtics are there on the other side
31:11so it'll just be
31:13Okay, you know are are they capable of knocking off?
31:16The thunder or some of the other teams in the west that we have great respect for and and we get to just kind of
31:21Sit back and enjoy that ride. But as far as the
31:24competition within the eastern conference and this is where I want to go with you adam is
31:29You know what?
31:30If you're looking at and we had this conversation a little bit with jared weiss when he was on with us last week
31:36I don't know what who are the biggest threats right now like
31:39Instinctively a lot of people would like to say
31:42You know milwaukee because yannis because dame
31:46Throw them out like as far as i'm concerned throw them out. I don't like that fit
31:50Philly, you know george is there now to go along with mbd and and some of the other talent that they have but
31:56I just don't believe in mbd and not at like as at that level as a winner, obviously, you know, he's an mvp
32:03He's statistically he's always going to be there. He's a great player individually
32:08Individually, I just think he's a crappy teammate not someone who's ever going to win in the league, you know at the you know
32:14highest level
32:15so
32:17Does it become the knicks by default?
32:20Am I in your mind as someone who covers the entire league in great depth?
32:24Am I you know short changing those other teams? Is there someone i'm leaving out?
32:28No, I think it's I think it's the knicks and the sixers. I don't I think you can flip a coin
32:32Just depends how things work with paul george
32:35but I think
32:36You know, I know there's so many mbd haters out there. He's he's so much better than everyone else on those two teams
32:42um that if he's right
32:44and the paul george
32:46uh
32:47Paul george meshes and that works
32:49I think they're more of a team to fear, you know, tyrese maxey is still on the upswing like that's a really really talented team
32:56people forget like I know it's so easy to but like
32:59Like two years ago if like like d anthony mellon hits like a couple of
33:02wide open threes
33:04There's a good chance the sixers knock the celtics out the playoffs
33:09Like had nothing to do with mbd. You'll go back to that game six
33:13You know a couple of those shots
33:15Even like one of those shots even goes in
33:18It's a really good chance. They're finishing them off in game six and everything changes. It didn't happen the celtics won
33:24I get it like they did they had to do
33:26but like
33:27When mbd is right, which hasn't been that often but when he's right, he's shown
33:32He can still be a dominant dominant force. Um, so who knows, you know, he's getting older too. We talked about age
33:37Like he's getting older
33:39You know, I wouldn't feel good about him playing a full season completely healthy
33:42But if he does and paul george's had injury concerns as well
33:45If he if he stays healthy, I think their their ceiling is probably the higher of the two teams
33:50Um, but you got to factor those things in
33:53um, you know what's happened in the past, so I think it's
33:57Next sixers and then gap I agree with you on the bucks, you know, they're just old and haven't really done much to get better
34:04And also docs the coach but that's a conversation for another day
34:07uh, we can adam before we let you you go here and wrap up this show and this can be a
34:13A transitionary topic we can start it here
34:16we can continue it next week with whoever we have on with us because I
34:20I I think we've talked a lot about tatum and brown
34:23Individually and the whole
34:25Tatum not playing at the olympics as much as everyone thought he should the dnps and and you know
34:30Kerr and all of that and and not winning either of the mvps finals or even eastern conference and then brown obviously his
34:37Not being all nba any of those teams being left off the olympic roster and just their individual
34:45Motivations, I I guess for lack of a better way of putting it this year and you know
34:49Missoula with the great quote or tatum, I guess the great quote about missoula saying that you know
34:54Nobody was happier that I was a dnp at the olympics than than joe
34:59Um, so I asked joe about that the next day
35:02Yeah, and he he like interrupted me like I just interrupted you and flashed a big smile. He goes. Oh, yeah, he's right. I love it
35:10I'm like, all right
35:11I love it. I love the way the dude's wired. I hope he's the coach for life so long as they stay competitive
35:16He's just a great soundbite fun to listen to and I think he's crazy in all the right ways
35:21But you know, like I said, you wrote recently about brown and I wasn't at media day
35:26but just you know looking at coverage and and looking at the
35:29Um, even just like shoot around or or training camp like videos that are making their way on social media like brown
35:38You talked about the whole
35:40It's it's I put on 10 pounds of muscle off season like he looks huge. I don't know if it's
35:46partially the
35:48the face looks slimmer because he shaved the beard and it's more of a
35:52Stubble situation as opposed to the big bushy thing and that like in some way plays
35:57You know mind games with your eyes and makes the body look but I have no idea but he looks just effing shredded right now
36:05and you know clearly we saw from
36:08A lot of the stuff that he put out in the off season what he has been working on and so he's clearly bigger
36:13Which of these guys if you had to pick and hopefully he answers both right but if you had to pick
36:19With tatum working on on the mechanics of his shot and trying to you know
36:23Get himself right a little bit with an issue that that never mind
36:26The olympics goes back to the playoffs last year even beyond that actually, you know, which of these guys do you think?
36:32is better positioned
36:34mentally physically both for
36:38Their game going to yet another level this season
36:41That's a tough question, I don't think there's I don't think there's indications that one or the others
36:47uh
36:48more position dominant, I think the there's probably like jason has been our first team on va for three years like
36:56Not so much last year but year before he spent a good chunk of the season as a leading mvp candidate
37:00um, so
37:01If you pull out jalen's conference final, like let's say jalen doesn't win conference finals the finals mvp
37:08You you think they're at the ceiling fairly much higher, but now he's gonna by doing that
37:13You know, that's that's a pretty big ceiling moment, by the way
37:15Oh here I am conference finals mvp and finals mvp. So maybe jalen but
37:20You know, they don't the thing is they don't need them to get like a lot better. There's there's small tweaks here and there
37:25Um, you know, you mentioned jason shooting i'll be curious to see
37:28you know when you when you're shooting around in front of us a few times like it's
37:32Shot like different that hitch is gone
37:34I put this in one of my stories. Maybe he's just
37:37workshopping something and
37:38Seeing how it feels while he's shooting around after a training camp practice and then when the games start
37:43It looks the same or maybe there's going to be a major adjustment
37:46um
37:47But these guys are always you know
37:49Focused on ways to get better and finding finding holes in their game. You saw with jalen last year like after every single practice
37:55He would spend like 20 minutes working on his reads
37:59with like four assistant coaches very simple stuff, but
38:03He was aware the turnovers were a problem and and his
38:06Abilities the playmaker needed improvement. It did it got better. Is there still room for it to get better? Absolutely
38:11um, but these guys are
38:13Really good at kind of working to try to improve their falls
38:16It is so it's like I said, we'll we'll wrap here and we can continue that topic next week
38:21But just in general in a general sports sense it fascinates me and it's not uncommon
38:25It's actually very common
38:27but it fascinates me how
38:28You know whether you're talking about a batter playing with his stance in baseball and altering the way that he swings or obviously
38:34Like you said, you know tatum with the hitch in his giddy up if you will and looking for the mechanics of a different shot
38:40Or you know, maybe a quarterback throwing the ball differently
38:43I I mean all these guys they work on on their craft in a different way and they're constantly honing it
38:48but I it's
38:49It's an apples to orange things, but but it'd be like, you know us like, you know
38:53Like podcasters radio tv people hosting the show and all of a sudden just trying to talk differently
38:59And you know and and and like carry ourselves in a completely different way. It's it's
39:04It's it's it's wild to me that that these guys can can do something largely the same way
39:11For much of their life or at least their professional life and take them to a certain level of success and then just be like
39:18Yeah, it hasn't been working lately. I'm gonna change it
39:20I'm, just I'm just gonna like totally reinvent the way that I do this. I I like I said, i'm just i'm
39:26fascinated with the maybe we ought to have like drew hanlon on the show and and get into that if anyone could
39:31Could break that type of thing down it'd be him but I talked to drew
39:34two days ago
39:35I want to tell him a story and he
39:37In a rare moment said he he's letting jason talk about shooting
39:40He doesn't want to he doesn't want to talk about any changes in his shooting form
39:44interesting
39:45but again, i'll be curious to see what it looks like when like it's one thing to
39:49When you're messing around after practice to be like, all right, let's try this and then
39:53Another thing when there's three minutes left in the fourth quarter
39:55Drew holly's passing ball in the corner and like, you know
39:57Does the muscle memory kick in at that point or is it right shot? We'll see. Yeah, it's gonna be a fun thing to watch
40:03but uh
40:04Anyway, adam hemmelsbach
40:05Like I said, check him out obviously on twitter checking, you know at adam hemmelsbach check him out in uh in in the globe
40:10and all of his
40:11Uh great work there and like I said
40:13He's been putting stories out on brown on shireman who we didn't even really get into at all looking forward to seeing the you know
40:19Extra from the town getting opportunity with the team this year. Holy crap the way this dude
40:24Did he look that way in college?
40:26He's quite literally your cousin from boston. He looks just like
40:30That's like a makeover. You'd look at the before and after pictures. He had like shaggy hair
40:34That's what I mean
40:34Like when I was watching video not that I was like regularly watching him in college
40:38But going back and watching highlights different dude, that is not that is not the guy that showed up to media day
40:44This guy looks like he's trying to be jeremy runner in the town. It's unbelievable
40:48But uh himmelsbach, we always enjoy when you hop on man, uh, get back to checking out syracuse
40:52Who hopefully as we sit here is continuing to smack around holy cross and at 28 14
40:57I've been watching out of the corner of my eye. Ah, beautiful
40:59Well, that's not great
41:01If you had the 28 and a half point spread but a lot of time left in the game
41:04Uh for him valenti i'm adam kaufman for of course himmelsbach
41:08Check out the celtic speed podcast as you always do available to you on the clns media youtube page
