00:00 You made that look easy, but what was your thoughts on that?
00:02 Yeah, it's not easy. It's not easy to win football matches in any competition.
00:06 Cup games, different feel, making sure the players are up for the challenge.
00:11 So overall, very pleased.
00:14 I think we started the game very bright, scored a very good goal,
00:18 and then we came off it a bit. Credit to them.
00:20 They got back into the game without really affecting our goal too much.
00:23 Or they had a great opportunity when Jimmy Garner, the brilliant bit of defender.
00:27 We just got a little bit soft on the game, I thought, and then half-time,
00:31 we corrected it as a unit, and I think we played very well
00:35 and very strong second half and came out worthy winners.
00:38 No, just I thought we had to play forwards more.
00:47 We had to be more physical in the game, in our presence,
00:52 and just really remind ourselves of the hard yards of a game,
00:56 because I've always believed there's quality here,
00:59 and doing the hard yards, the ugly side, the shape,
01:03 the desire to take on a game.
01:06 And I thought it flooded back into the team second half,
01:08 and I thought it was a very, very strong half, and a couple of,
01:11 well, more than a couple, but I thought Dwight McNeil was exceptional second half.
01:15 His work ethic for the team and his actual team play.
01:18 Jack Harrison, who continues to impress me and I think everyone,
01:21 just by his manner as much as anything around the group.
01:25 I think Jimmy keeps learning, keeps improving.
01:27 Jared keeps improving. Held together with some of the older pros,
01:31 I thought the subs were excellent.
01:32 Gannon was excellent when he came on. Duke, Taki, obviously,
01:35 been terrific. Jordan, really calm tonight, making good decisions.
01:39 You know, when it all comes together and you get that kind of
01:41 consistency that I've spoken about endlessly to all of you, it works.
01:45 And I think the players are growing in belief of that,
01:48 not just their ability, not just their quality,
01:50 but that team ethic and the team ship, and I think that's growing.
01:53 - Very few changes to the score.
01:55 I mean, was that something you had to think about?
01:57 Because obviously, the signal one was that the team ship...
02:00 - Yeah, yeah. I mean, look, it's always tempting, but the challenge you've got,
02:05 and I keep saying to the players is, you know,
02:08 if you want to go and be really super successful, and there was a lot of talk,
02:12 not now, because there's a lot of work to be done now.
02:14 We all know that. I've mentioned it endlessly because it's true.
02:16 But seven or eight years ago, people were talking about Europe and all that.
02:19 Well, I've been through that with Burnley.
02:21 You're going to play a lot of football, a lot of football.
02:23 So I want the players to realise that you can play three games a week.
02:27 You can have the mentality, you know, you can take these games on.
02:30 And I'm certainly one who believes that.
02:32 You know, the rest, the recuperation, the support systems
02:36 that are in place for players now have never been greater.
02:38 So I don't think it's too much to ask a player to go out and play three in a week.
02:42 We have to be a little bit careful and sensible.
02:44 You know, we get three in a loop, we can change things, two in a league,
02:47 and change things a little bit.
02:48 But at the end of the day, I want the mentality to be,
02:50 I'm playing every game, you know, and I was a player, I wasn't a great player,
02:53 but I wanted to play every single game.
02:55 And I mainly played in the Championship.
02:57 And as you all know, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday,
02:59 more or less all season.
03:01 I want that mentality whenever you put the shirt on, you're ready.
03:03 And like I say, it's building.
03:06 It's not finished, but it's building.
03:07 I think that was really pleasing about the performance tonight.
03:10 Well, like I said, it's a work in progress,
03:19 but there is progress.
03:21 I said early season, if you remember, our results didn't go,
03:24 but I thought some of the performances were as good as when I've been here.
03:27 Certainly the first two home games, when it's a head scratcher,
03:30 you don't at least draw, let alone win.
03:32 But it doesn't hold any weight when you don't win.
03:36 When you start winning, people believe a bit more.
03:38 So that's my job, is to see through all that and believe anyway.
03:43 And I think the players are doing that.
03:44 I think they're beginning to believe more and more.
03:46 Five and seven wins, as you said, is a good marker.
03:49 And we've been a bit unfortunate somewhat.
03:52 You know, the incident at Liverpool, you never know if that goes in our favour.
03:55 But no, the players deserve it.
03:57 They're working very hard on the training pitch and the staff
03:59 and they're delivering in the games when there was a blow.
04:02 Was the victory a bit sweeter coming against your old side?
04:05 No, I'm not bothered about that. I had a fantastic time there.
04:07 They helped me enormously.
04:09 I helped them, I think, and my staff and some of the players.
04:11 I'm absolutely not. It had no relevance.
04:13 It will never have a relevance for me.
04:15 Nothing but respect for Burnley Football Club.
04:17 Sean, Dominic Calver-Lewin has made six successive starts now.
04:20 Obviously, you took a lot of questions last season about the approach you took.
04:24 And maybe some people questioned it.
04:26 Are you starting to feel vindicated now that he is looking robust and durable?
04:29 I'm not starting to feel vindicated.
04:30 I've just been in the game a long time and I just looked at the past regimes
04:35 and how they dealt with things.
04:36 And I thought, 'We've got to change it.
04:37 We've got to do something different.'
04:39 We were very unlucky, actually, midway through that process.
04:42 He was just on the borderline of really, truly getting fit.
04:45 And then he got injured again.
04:47 We had to go back to square one, but pre-season, we didn't put over pressure on him.
04:51 We tried to take the pressure off and some of the noise away.
04:54 Obviously, it helped signing players as well.
04:57 And I think he's feeling the benefit of that now.
04:59 I still think he'll get fitter and sharper even now because he's getting there.
05:03 But I still think there's more to come.
05:04 But I was pleased with his performance again tonight.
