Two KillerFrogs Writers, Tori Couch and JD Andress recap the TCU 28-35 defeat to Texas Tech
Transcript
00:00 Hello and welcome to the Killer Frogs the post game show.
00:04 I'm Tori Couch here with JD Andrus and we are at RAR Brewery where we have just watched
00:10 TCU lose to Texas Tech at a watch party sponsored by Killer Frogs.com.
00:17 Tech took out TCU 35-28 tonight.
00:19 JD, what are your initial thoughts after this game?
00:22 I think you saw a lot of miscues by TCU, lack of a running game one and on the other side
00:29 getting ran over pretty much all nonstop.
00:32 Tosh Brooks is a top two running back in the conference and he looked like it tonight.
00:37 It's another story of TCU can't stop the run on defense and then when they do finally decide
00:41 to sell out for it, you get beat over the top.
00:44 I agree.
00:45 I think Texas Tech's ability to establish a run was big tonight because especially in
00:49 that first half you saw a huge difference in the time of possession.
00:53 Tech didn't have a massive lead but they just were able to keep TCU off the field and TCU
00:57 couldn't cut into that lead and like you said on the flip side, TCU didn't run the ball
01:01 well.
01:02 Less than 100 yards rushing for the entire game.
01:06 That's a little discouraging when you have a back like Amani Bailey but that's also a
01:10 little bit both lines for TCU needed a lot of time to kind of get going and push back
01:16 on Tech a little bit.
01:18 Yeah, I mean for once we kind of finally saw a halftime adjustments made on defense and
01:22 they stopped a run a lot better especially in the third quarter, early fourth quarter
01:27 but the offensive line as a whole just has not been playing well yet and you go back
01:31 to I believe it was Willis Patrick who said last week during the bye week that or at the
01:36 beginning of this week after the bye week this is the best that they felt about their
01:39 offensive line.
01:40 It was their most physical practice they've had and they feel good about where their running
01:44 game should be at this week and they weren't well in pass protection or running game.
01:48 Yeah, no it's been interesting to watch this offensive line especially throughout the year.
01:53 They've been up and down and it's real the team has kind of flowed with how the offensive
01:58 line goes.
01:59 They play really well, team usually wins, they don't play as well, end up on the other
02:04 end and so it's a little concerning seeing the way the line has been playing.
02:09 Yeah, I think a lot of it is too is I mean you would expect the veteran leadership of
02:12 Brandon Coleman and he's been playing very well this season and I don't know if it's
02:16 the fact of having a newer quarterback in Josh Hoover who took a 10 second, you know
02:22 took 10 seconds to throw the ball away today with a minute and 10 left on the clock and
02:26 that's kind of a rookie thing that shouldn't be happening and I understand it happens but
02:30 I don't know if it's a lack of him not being able to adjust the pass protection at the
02:34 line or what's going on with the offensive line but when you can't run the ball and you
02:39 have a back as dynamic as Zimani Bailey who is proven multiple times throughout the season
02:44 he can run for over 120 yards, break away the runs and it's just not happening and you're
02:49 finally, I mean to his credit though he's finally getting used in the passing game and
02:54 he's making the best of his abilities and he's, when Zimani Bailey's getting the ball
02:57 whether it be through throwing it to him or handing it off to him the TCU offense goes
03:02 regardless of what the offensive line looks like but again I mean there's just a lot wrong
03:08 that I don't know where to start on the offensive side of the ball.
03:11 Well and I think that part of that kind of like you mentioned there's a lot of inexperienced
03:14 there's a lot of youth on this team especially on the offensive side of the ball they lost
03:18 so many pieces from last year I think that's just been something I've noticed throughout
03:21 the whole season is there are questions it's like well where do you start what do you focus
03:25 on and I think we saw a lot of that tonight but on Hoover I agree that play there near
03:31 the end where he kind of let a lot of time off the clock wasn't great but he had some
03:34 really nice throws tonight that I thought were really encouraging moving down the line
03:38 for the rest of the season and potentially into the future not going to get into quarterback
03:42 discussion but I really liked the way he kind of shook off some bad throws he had that early
03:48 interception that interception early in the second quarter second half excuse me and he
03:54 just he looks like he was kind of starting to figure a few things out.
03:58 Yeah I spoke when Brett and I did the you know preview for this week's game one thing
04:03 that him and I talked about was Hoover has one of the best arms in the country when he's
04:08 on Hoover's ability though to not throw down slow down his arm speed everything's a bullet
04:13 pass and you saw two of the interceptions tonight were overthrows on bullet passes that
04:17 if he just put a little touch on him there catches and it's just like I know that's something
04:23 that he's going to go into offseason he's going to look it over and he's going to become
04:25 better at that.
04:26 Absolutely yeah.
04:27 But his arm strength is amazing and his decision making really is it's just if he can learn
04:32 to take a little bit off he's right where he should be and where we need him to be.
04:37 Yeah no I think I think he has a bright future ahead.
04:40 We talked a little bit about the defense let's kind of talk a bit more about what we saw
04:42 on the defensive side of the ball we touched on the run game earlier and letting Tosh Brooks
04:47 kind of just do whatever he wanted.
04:50 I didn't feel like Tess's tech dominated in the passing game.
04:54 Baron Morton had a good stat line he didn't make any mistakes he didn't have crucial turnover
04:58 to anything like that which is part of what helped tech pull out this victory but I didn't
05:04 feel like they did anything overly special in the pass game the secondary just got beat
05:07 a couple of times.
05:09 And that's pretty much the recipe that Texas Tech has found success in this year is Baron
05:13 Morton doesn't have to be a top five quarterback in the conference when you have a running
05:16 back as good as Tosh Brooks and you start to get the defense start to creep down which
05:20 you saw a lot today of once you start creeping down and now you know you're leaving your
05:24 safety on an island and Abraham got beat on and it was just a great route by the receiver
05:29 and a beautiful throw by Morton that that happens whenever you have to sell out for
05:33 the run but the defensive line is I don't know where they are like you'll see them on
05:38 maybe once or twice in the second half of the offensive lines kind of worn down and
05:42 they're rotating in but you can't you can't be expected to stop a run when you're running
05:48 a 3-3-5 and your defense line is getting no pressure and I know they try to switch at
05:52 the beginning of the game to kind of more of a hybrid 4-2-5 and while it worked a little
05:58 bit early you took out Paul Oyewale to start the series who's been arguably TCU's best
06:03 defensive player all season.
06:05 Yeah, no it's yeah like you said there were a lot of changes and some things that just
06:10 didn't didn't quite work out the way I think the TCU was expecting for it to work and yeah
06:16 it's tough when when your your DBs are just letting them run by you.
06:20 And on the flip side of that I do really appreciate the fact that Jalefsy's trying to make adjustments
06:25 and sometimes it seems to me that he doesn't have the personnel available to work the defense
06:30 well.
06:31 The secondary's been great but when you don't have the defensive line, the linebackers are
06:34 playing well like he's trying to do everything he can to make an adjustment even halftime
06:39 adjustments for the first time we've really seen noticeable positive you know halftime
06:43 adjustments happen that it's a positive outlook on JoJo Lepsi but a lot of it is too is your
06:50 offense has too many three and outs that your defense is going to get gassed and that's
06:54 part of the duality of what your offense is running.
06:56 Yeah and I think we saw that a little bit in the first half was the offense just got
06:59 off the field so quick and then the defense got wore out.
07:03 So let's so TCU lost tonight they are now four and five so still still three games left
07:14 can get to a bowl game with two wins it's not going to be easy Texas next week at home
07:20 followed by a Baylor and then at OU just not diving into details but just general thoughts
07:27 moving into next week.
07:29 Tomorrow the game time gets announced for the Texas game if it's a night game like TCU
07:35 at night especially against Texas is a different team maybe this year is not different but
07:41 I think I don't think they pull it out but keep it respectable just don't lose worse
07:46 than we did to Kansas State but it's the last time we'll play them so who knows.
07:50 Yeah I think they'll be a little bit extra emotional extra little motivation there but
07:55 to your point I think this TCU team looks a lot better than they did after Kansas State
08:00 coming off that bye looks like they just got a little more juice into them and hopefully
08:04 that carries over into next week.
08:06 I mean you've seen comparatively were how they've lost the other games this year this
08:11 is minus the Colorado game their best loss of the year.
08:15 West Virginia and Iowa State they look dead and then this week you see it you saw emotion
08:20 when Josh over to the interception at the end players were upset mad when they lost
08:24 the West Virginia and Iowa State and I mean there was a video floating around on X last
08:28 weekend that when TCU was down by three touchdowns they were laughing on the field.
08:34 You're seeing it now that the players do have the emotion and I think that's a good sign
08:38 for the next three games are probably the most important three games of the season not
08:42 even from a record standpoint but who knows when you play Texas again who knows when you
08:46 play Oklahoma again and then you have Baylor sandwiched in between them who's the biggest
08:50 rival of the year like this is the time that the juice and the energy is going to be there.
08:54 Yeah no it's like you said I think it's great to see that the TCU came out of the bye week
08:58 with the energy that we just didn't see against Kansas State and I think that's gonna be really
09:02 important moving forward not just for this season but going in the offseason building
09:06 some momentum you know for next year moving forward.
09:10 Well thank you so much JD enjoyed talking with you after this tough loss to Texas Tech
