Is it too early for Christmas?

  • last year
Halloween and bonfire night are done and dusted, so we all know whats next. Christmas. For many of us, we’ve already done plenty of christmas shopping, but for others, christmas doesn’t come until well into december. We speak to the people of Cardiff about whether or not they think its a bit early, or whether christmas has begun.

00:03 - Lovely time, 'cause it's just finished Halloween,
00:05 so nice Christmas time.
00:07 'Cause it's just nice.
00:12 And, I don't know, it's just nice.
00:18 I like the music.
00:19 - Have you got your tree up yet?
00:21 Decorations or is that? - No.
00:22 - Oh, when's that?
00:23 When would you do the decorations, please?
00:25 - Probably the start of December, end of November.
00:29 I've already done all my Christmas shopping,
00:31 started in January, and I'm finished already, so yeah.
00:35 Can't wait to put the tree up.
00:37 Yeah, so one of my friends, Danielle,
00:39 she died three years ago on the 28th of November,
00:42 and we put the Christmas tree up on the 27th,
00:45 and when she left, I was waiting for her to come home,
00:47 and she never did.
00:48 So, to me, Christmas means a lot, 'cause she loved it.
00:50 She was really bubbly,
00:52 and she just absolutely loved Christmas, so.
00:55 Christmas tree will go up.
00:57 I'll put some Christmas music on
00:58 whilst doing the tree,
01:00 probably get all the wrappings in,
01:02 and then it'll just be watching Christmas movies,
01:06 Christmas music for cleaning,
01:08 probably around the 27th and 28th.
01:12 At least we got bonfire and Halloween
01:14 out of the way first, though.
01:15 - I think it's a bit too early.
01:19 It's much too commercial.
01:20 It's not as it used to be in my days,
01:22 where it's more traditional, you know?
01:25 So, I think it's definitely too early.
01:27 I think on the continent, certainly in Scandinavia,
01:30 I don't think they celebrate it until much nearer the time.
01:34 Hardly one thing finishes before the next one's on it,
01:37 so, on course, you know?
01:39 So, no, I think it's definitely too early,
01:41 but I'm still a very Christmassy person, anyway,
01:44 family-orientated, so I'm all for Christmas, yeah.
01:48 - Like, first of November, as soon as Halloween is done,
01:55 or bonfire night is done, then Christmas, me.
01:58 I think Christmas shopping, yeah,
02:00 'cause everything else is out of the way,
02:02 and just a lot of money, so.
02:06 Music has, I haven't put my decorations up yet,
02:10 but music has started, and Christmas films.
02:13 - I don't think so, because I always shop early
02:17 to try and avoid the last-minute rush.
02:20 I can't stand the stress.
02:22 I like to get it done by the end of November,
02:25 and I'm sorted.
02:27 - How about the other Christmassy bits,
02:28 like Christmas music, decorations, is it a bit early yet, or?
02:31 - Yeah, definitely, yeah.
02:34 Yeah, that should be about a week before Christmas.
02:37 Yeah, that's fine.
02:39 - Given the day, it's probably on time.
02:41 I think people enjoy preparing and celebrating for Christmas.
02:45 It becomes a good thing, I think, over time.
02:48 Where I come from, they start playing Christmas music,
02:52 you know, from now until the first day of January,
02:55 so it's a little early.
02:56 I get kind of burned out, but in general, I enjoy it.
03:00 So it's good.
