00:00 -How did you feel like defensively your team played?
00:04 That guy's talked about it a little bit. -What'd they say?
00:08 -They said that was the first thing that you're always talking about. -It was.
00:12 The beginning I wasn't pleased with
00:16 they hit a couple shots but then they got their offensive rebounds.
00:20 We couldn't get any transition going early the first five or six
00:24 minutes because we didn't get any stops.
00:28 The good thing too is now when we're making subs all of a sudden we brought in some older guys.
00:32 I've been bringing in some young freshmen a lot off the bench. All of a sudden
00:36 we brought in Latre' Darthard, Waldo Soares,
00:40 older guys, John Hughley. We were able to
00:44 have another wave and we got I think 11 stops in a row, maybe it was 12,
00:48 and I think we were getting out in transition. That whole run, that's what we want to do is
00:52 have some defense creates offense. I thought our
00:56 first half defense from the 15 minute mark on
01:00 was very good. We just got a lot of work to work on.
01:04 There was a lot of good things. We forced 17 turnovers. That's really good.
01:08 What we're trying to do, be active, be more athletic and long and create some of that.
01:12 It's a starting point.
01:16 Every day you learn more about yourself and where you need to improve.
01:20 I want to flip flop the rebounds on offense. We only had five
01:24 and we missed 22 shots. We got
01:28 five of them. You'd like to get a little bit more
01:32 and we gave up 14. -What do you think the way Tegan played?
01:36 -I don't think he was pressing.
01:41 He started off the game and then the next wave of guys came in and did really well
01:45 and he came in and he just picked right back up. That's what you get with
01:49 age. Sometimes there's freshmen like I'm out in three or four minutes now or
01:53 guys that came out of the game. He just kept on being
01:57 solid. Last year when they backed off him
02:01 I think he's worked on his shot so much it almost looked like he smiled
02:05 before he shot it. He didn't but almost in my head it looked like he did
02:09 because he's worked on it so much he just rose up and shot it.
02:13 He got out in transition a handful of times. He tracked
02:17 down a blocked shot. I thought that was a great effort play. He knows I'm going to talk
02:21 to that floater. We were in bonus and he took a floater and then he followed a guy after missing
02:25 an offensive rebound so he knows I'm coming after him for that.
02:29 Just liked how he played within himself. He just didn't press.
02:33 It was like alright next shift I'm in. Here's my next four or five minutes
02:37 and just played super solid. -How about JV in
02:41 first game with the team? It seemed like he really found a shot especially late.
02:45 -I saw just a confidence and a vocalness. I thought
02:49 he was really vocal. He was constantly in communication with me. He was
02:53 against the press. He wanted the ball, took control.
02:57 Obviously knocked down some shots and then he took
03:01 it to the rack on that. He gives us speed. I've been saying
03:05 that and you can just see the speed but he also has shooting. He gives us speed
03:09 and shooting. I think that's something
03:13 that really adds to our team.
03:17 -How happy were you with the pace?
03:22 -I think you gotta get stops. We're pushing it. We're trying.
03:26 You gotta get stops and you gotta rebound. It's hard to push
03:30 as much as we wanted with 14 offensive rebounds. With that said
03:34 we scored 89 points. I thought we got to the foul line
03:38 fast because I thought we were aggressive. Going downhill, pushing
03:42 and transition. You can't run unless you get stops and rebound.
03:46 You gotta defend and rebound to run.
03:50 Hopefully the guys will look at that first six minutes and see that because we really didn't get out
03:54 and run in the first five or six minutes because of not getting
03:58 stops.
04:02 -Watching them tonight, a year on from
04:06 Sandhuston last year, what struck you most about just going to those two more
04:10 in the group? -They didn't look like wide eyed
04:14 freshmen. They got a lot of experience under the belt. Like I said,
04:18 I told somebody, I think there was only like six guys on the freshman
04:22 all Big 12 ballot last year. To be all Big 12 freshmen, there was only like six
04:26 guys. There wasn't a lot of guys playing last year in the Big 12.
04:30 They got a lot of minutes in the number one conference in the country and they came back
04:34 and I think they're both stronger. I think they're both...
04:38 We got a big group of growth. They're only true sophomores too.
04:42 I told them hungry and humble. They gotta stay hungry and humble and
04:46 get better. I think they both... What I saw out of
04:50 them, they both didn't look like the moment.
04:54 They were in the moment. They were excited. They weren't scared. They were thinking
04:58 the game and I love that about them. -Once the defense got
05:02 rolling, the offense just pulled itself out. It wasn't a unique hangover from the slow start.
05:07 -That's what helps with having some different pieces. We came
05:11 in with some veterans guy. We came in
05:15 with some athleticism. Right away I think Waldo
05:19 and Latreille hit threes too in that run.
05:23 That's really good because they can get going. When you can
05:27 have your bench come in, John came off the bench at ten. Luke hit a big shot. It was good to
05:31 see him get one to fall in.
05:35 I thought Latreille, Waldo, John, and Luke came off the bench and
05:39 gave some good minutes. I think Caden came in. It was good to get him in there.
05:43 You can see my problem. Mocs got in there and did two or three things at the end of the game.
05:47 -You mentioned athleticism. Seem like Jalen brought a lot of that also for you guys today.
05:51 What did you see out of him? -Just energy.
05:55 The biggest thing for Jalen Moore,
05:59 as I'm talking to him all the time, is get your athleticism into the game.
06:03 Some guys are really athletic but they don't get into the game. They're not running hard. They're not
06:07 off the rim. They're not striking you downhill. I thought Jalen Moore got his
06:11 athleticism into the game. Blocked a shot. I think that's
06:15 something I talked about. Have your presence felt, just don't be present.
06:19 I thought Jalen Moore had his presence felt.
06:23 -You had a bunch of guys step up, a multiplicity of guys step up tonight and hit a three point
06:27 or center in some cases. How good is that? How encouraging is that to see as a coach?
06:31 -I got confidence in a lot of guys stepping up and hitting threes. There's really
06:35 not a guy, I mean that sincerely, you're not gonna see me flinch when Sam
06:39 Godwin pulls a three. He shoots them in practice. He shoots really good. I told him
06:43 you gotta shoot it. You go down the list and I just think there's one, two, three,
06:48 four, five, six, seven different guys hit threes tonight. Seven different
06:52 guys hit threes tonight. Pleased with that.
06:56 -Any additional questions for coach? -Alright guys.
07:00 Thanks. See you Friday.
