Almost 8,000 eager spectators ignored the gloomy weather forecast to enjoy the dazzling Farnham Fireworks and Torchlit Procession last Saturday – helping organisers Farnham Round Table raise £45,000 for local good causes.
The captivating procession snaked its way from Farnham town centre to the park, with a column of flickering torches following the lead of mayor Alan Earwaker, Round Table chairman Nigel Davison, Tim Corry from gold sponsors Guardian Angel Carers, and Zebiba, a young lady supported by youth homelessness charity Step by Step, to the rhythm of the Reading Pipers Band.
Another highlight was the Fifty for Fawkes Guy competition, which attracted entries from more than a dozen schools, charities, and community groups in exchange for £50 each. St Mary’s School in Frensham clinched the coveted top spot, chosen by Guardian Angel Carers, with The Ridgeway School securing the runner-up position, chosen by Round Table chair Nigel.
Their efforts soon went up in smoke on the magnificent bonfire, however, lit by the mayor and Guardian Angel director Tim, a former RAF Chinook pilot.
Afterwards, the crowd enjoyed a breathtaking 15-minute professional fireworks display to music. And despite a late downpour, many stayed on until 9pm to enjoy a second live set by ska band Jungle Brew on the main stage, introduced by Lee Moran from silver sponsor Moran Roofing.
There was also a street food village, Hog’s Back Brewery bar, mulled wine, Taiko drummers and more to enjoy throughout the evening.
Farnham Round Table chair Nigel expressed his gratitude to the dozens of local groups and businesses that contributed their time and resources to make the event a resounding success.
Among the local heroes mentioned were Farnham 3rd, 11th, and Network Scouts, 41 Club, Hedgehogs, Farnham Youth Choir, Farnham Cricket Club, Hale Community Centre, Tootsies, Potters Gate School, Abbey School, various Bourne-based sports clubs, St Andrew’s School, and St Mary’s School, Frensham.
