Fresh for 2023, Zero Motorcycles presents its new DSR/X, an electric adventure motorcycle designed to take riders away from the pavement. The Santa Cruz, California, company has been a force in the electric motorcycle segment for 15 years, but this is its first ADV rig.

The DSR/X is powered by a giant 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery, and while the rating is a measure of energy storage capacity, Zero motorcycles are also known for producing a hellacious amount of torque at the back wheel. The last time we rode a Zero SR/F, it churned out 140 lb.-ft. torque. This motor is said to deliver 166 lb.-ft. torque. That’s more than a six-cylinder Honda Gold Wing or BMW’s mighty K 1600. And it's a good thing it has that much juice, considering its hefty 544-pound ready-to-ride weight.

The DSR/X has rugged, modern styling, but it’s not overdone. Up front it rolls on a 19-inch cast-aluminum wheel, complemented by a 17-inch cast-aluminum rear hoop, the same type of wheel configuration employed by the BMW GS, Ducati Multistrada, Suzuki V-Strom, and Harley-Davidson’s Pan America. The 19/17 wheelset combo is ideal for riders who are looking to do light off-roading, with road remaining the focus...

00:00 Hey folks good morning and welcome to the official press introduction for Zero
00:06 Motorcycles 2023 DSRX. Yes Zero Motorcycles has finally unveiled a true
00:17 adventure bike for you as consumption. Let's go for a ride. Well folks there it
00:25 is Zero Motorcycles 2023 DSRX. This is an all-new vehicle from Zero Motorcycles
00:34 out of Santa Cruz California. Now it's crazy to think but Zero Motorcycles has
00:42 been crafting its all-electric motorcycles for 15 years now. The first
00:49 Zero Motorcycles motorcycle debuted for the 2007 model year. Fast forward to
00:56 today and the Zero Motorcycles line expands with the addition of this
01:04 adventure bike. Now this vehicle features a giant 17.3 kilowatt hour battery.
01:15 17.3 kilowatt hours is a measure of the energy storage capacity of this vehicle.
01:24 That's a whopping amount of power. These Zero Motorcycles are always known for
01:30 producing a hellacious amount of torque at the back wheel. The last time we rode
01:39 a Zero SRF motorcycle for the 2020 model year that thing put out a whopping 120
01:47 pound-feet torque. This motor is said to put out a hundred and sixty six pound
01:56 feet torque. That's more than a Honda Goldwing. That's more than a six-cylinder
02:01 K 1600 BMW. That is an insane amount of torque and it's gonna need it because
02:09 this vehicle is heavy. 544 pounds as it sits. What do you guys think of the
02:20 styling? I love the styling of this vehicle. It almost looks like it
02:26 was out of the movie Oblivion. Yes! Let's take a look here. We have a 19-inch front
02:34 cast aluminum wheel complemented with the 17-inch cast aluminum rear wheel. So
02:42 this type of wheel configuration is what many modern adventure bikes use. BMW GS,
02:51 the Suzuki V-Strom, the Harley-Davidson Panamerica use that. And the 1917 wheel
02:58 combo is good for riders who are looking to do a little bit of off-roading but
03:04 mainly road riding. That's why that 1917 combo works so good generally. Look at
03:12 this seat. Seat is nice and deep and plush. My favorite feature of this bike
03:17 next to this awesomely adjustable easy to adjust windscreen is this the storage
03:24 compartment. I love the storage compartment. This storage compartment
03:29 swallows seven gallons of gear. That's double the capacity of the SRF that we
03:36 tested in the 2020 model year. There is the J1772 charging point. This vehicle
03:46 can be charged with the J1772 charging point or you can use a conventional
03:52 household 3.3 prong 110 adapter. If you plug in this vehicle at your house with
03:59 a conventional household 3 prong 110 adapter, this vehicle is going to take
04:04 approximately 10 hours to charge from 0% to 95%. If you have J1772
04:12 functionality at your home or business, this charging time is reduced to
04:19 roughly four hours. Four hours for 0% to 95%. The reason why Zero
04:26 Motorcycles and other EV companies quote 0% to 95% is because that is the
04:33 majority of your charging. That last 5% has a lot to do with with cell balancing
04:40 and computer programming related to getting that last 5% battery
04:45 capacity out of this vehicle. As you can see we have an inverted fork up front
04:51 radial mount J-Juan brakes. That is now a Brembo owned company. Originally it was a
04:58 Spanish brake company. Rear shock. Look at that big reservoir. That big show a
05:03 reservoir. This shock mounts directly to the frame and swing arm without a
05:08 linkage. I generally am NOT a fan of bikes without a linkage.
05:13 Especially for off-road use. In this application it seems to be working
05:19 well. Seven inches. Just over seven inches of suspension travel front and rear.
05:26 Alright folks, enough talking about the Zero SRF. Let's get in the cockpit and
05:33 see what it's like to operate. Another neat thing we wanted to discuss is that
05:39 belt final drive. A lot of people out there are gonna be like why doesn't
05:44 have chain final drive? Well chain final drive is loud. Yes we love chain
05:49 final drive. When you're riding a vehicle that makes not a lot of noise that chain
05:54 drive can get a little annoying. Zero Motorcycle solution is this belt final
05:59 drive. Look at how the belt final drive sprocket mounts directly to the
06:06 17-inch rear wheel. That's said to give the tire a more even torque load during
06:15 acceleration. The rear belt sprocket has those holes inside of it. The holes are
06:21 designed to move dirt and debris out of the surface between the sprocket and the
06:29 belt final drive. That helps mitigate excess wear and keeps that belt from
06:37 stretching or breaking when you're out on the trail. Now this is one of the
06:42 reasons why these Zero Motorcycles are so awesome. Look at the auxiliary storage
06:48 inside this DSRX. Via two torque screws you can put you can remove this panel
06:57 and put more stuff in addition to the seven gallons with USB plugs. Yes thank
07:05 you Zero Motorcycles. I love storage and this motorcycle has plenty of it. There
07:12 is also a small small storage compartment underneath the rider seat.
07:18 Very nice. Alright folks here we are at the official press introduction. Official
07:27 North American press introduction for Zero Motorcycles 2023 DSRX. This is an
07:35 all-new adventure touring bike from Zero Motorcycles out of Santa Cruz,
07:44 California.
07:48 Now this motorcycle is loosely based off its awesome Zero SRF naked bike which we
07:58 last operated for the 2020 model year many years ago. So what Zero did is they
08:07 actually used that SRF as a baseline to build this motorcycle. The frame, swing
08:18 arm, every component has been modified slightly to for the added rigors of
08:26 adventure touring riding. Now this Zero Motorcycles features a very powerful
08:41 166 pound-feet air-cooled motor. This motor has plenty of get up and go.
08:51 There's our buddy Abe. He is the chief engineer. He used to work at Buell
08:58 Motorcycle Company. He's the chief technical officer dude at Zero
09:03 Motorcycles. Air-cooled motor puts out a 166 pound-feet of torque. That's about 26
09:14 pound-feet more than the SRF which was rated at 140. That's way more torque than
09:23 any modern internal combustion engine equipped motorcycle. And I love
09:30 having all that torque. It's fun boning out on the street and here on this fire
09:37 road having all that power at your right wrist. Yes! I love the G-forces that this
09:45 motorcycle get or produces when you are riding and giving her the beans.
09:52 All right, ergonomically on this bike I like the ergonomics. This motorcycle is
09:58 very is a big rider friendly motorcycle. If you are a tall person or someone who
10:05 is bigger than average you're gonna like the ergonomics on this
10:09 motorcycle. The handlebar is nice and tall. It doesn't have a lot of rearward
10:15 sweep. This handlebar has a lot of forward sweep which is kind of nice
10:21 because it puts you in a real aggressive riding position. If you were gonna log a
10:26 ton of highway miles that front bias sweep might get a little annoying but I
10:33 like it. A lot of street bikes pretty much all modern street bikes are having
10:38 more and more rearward sweep so it's nice to ride a motorcycle that's going
10:42 in the opposite direction. I like the seat it's nice and low nice and low
10:48 without it being too low and it cups my rear end very nicely. It's a very
10:54 cozy motorcycle to log miles on. I like this Fox fuel tank area it's nice and
11:04 big. It does a good job of locking the elements which is what you want on a
11:13 touring bike. We're riding right now in the standing position and believe it or
11:18 not the standing ergonomics on this bike are really good. Really good. We rode
11:25 an internal combustion engine equipped motorcycle, a new one, recently in
11:32 Colorado and the ergonomics on that bike weren't as good as this bike which is
11:37 crazy. So I like the standing ergonomics. I like the big serrated foot pegs. I like
11:45 yeah this vehicle it's a little bit wide it's a little bit wide but I like the
11:50 width because it's really easy to squeeze the bike with my legs like
11:54 there's substantial surface area to do that so I feel like I have a lot of
11:59 control and the fuel tank the way it's shaped the Fox fuel tank it's not my way
12:04 I like that.
12:09 Yes right now we are riding in whoa the off-road traction control setting. So
12:19 riding in standard power configuration with the off-road traction control and
12:24 off-road ABS which disables rear ABS so we can lock up the back wheel if we like.
12:38 Actually I'm sorry ABS is still on in the off-road setting it's just with
12:45 off-road ABS calibration.
12:49 Now this vehicle has just over seven inches of suspension travel. Suspension
13:02 has a lot of work to do. This vehicle weighs a whopping 544 pounds. 544 pounds
13:10 isn't that crazy? This thing is no featherweight. You definitely feel the
13:16 weight you can feel the suspension just how it moves the weight and how it has
13:22 to react with that much mass. Realistically when you're riding on the
13:28 street you'd be hard-pressed to even feel its heft. It's crazy how maneuverable
13:35 this motorcycle is on the road but there's no denying that this thing is a
13:42 heavyweight bike.
13:45 Suspension of course has preload spring preload and damping adjustment front and
13:54 aft. We talked about that show a shock I like that big beefy shock with this big
14:00 reservoir on it. It looks real mean no doubt that big reservoir has a lot of
14:07 nitrogen in there to help keep damping the damping qualities fixed when it gets
14:14 hot during rides or just from damping all 544 pounds of this motorcycle. God
14:22 this is fun.
14:24 Riding electric motorcycles is neat because it you just there's no engine
14:30 noise no vibration no exhaust noise it's just like a different experience but I
14:38 like it. I like that there's no clutch to actuate no gears to shift. I'm a big fan
14:48 of Honda's DCT. DCT is a clutchless setup with gear shifts that are done
15:01 automatically or by a push of a button and I just like the way that feels. Yes
15:09 God this thing does not go slow.
15:16 Thankfully it has a nice size triple disc brakes. The rear disc brake on this
15:22 vehicle is the biggest rear disc Zero Motorcycles ever put on one of its
15:27 motorcycles. It's a good thing it has it. God that's so fun to spin up the engine.
15:32 This off-road traction control mode is really nice because it allows some level
15:36 of wheel spin and the connection between motorcycle and throttle it works
15:46 really well. I like the throttle response on this vehicle. It's not too touchy it's
15:50 not too dull. You feel real connected on this bike.
15:56 And there is our group. We are gonna wait for everyone here and then we will
16:07 rejoin everyone and talk more about this vehicle. This is when you feel the weight
16:13 at parking lot speeds and at low speed maneuvers. Alright folks we're gonna
16:20 catch in with you in a little bit. Alright folks a good old-fashioned
16:24 mechanical key is how you start this thing. You put it in the ignition, turn
16:29 the ignition on, the five inch color TFT display lights up with that cool little
16:33 Zero Motorcycles logo. Turn it on run and away you go.
16:39 Throttle and go. Gosh I love this motorcycle. I love this nearly seven
16:45 gallon storage compartment that just swallows gear, 12 packs, whatever you want
16:52 to put in there. I love it. There again is the J1772 charging port that is capable
17:01 of charging this vehicle up to 95% with this charging point port and level 2 in
17:07 four hours. Alright let's go. Can I go? Can I go? Great. And away we go folks. We
17:26 talked about this DSRX how it rolls on a 19 inch front 17 inch rear wheel
17:33 combo that is the same wheel size that all old-school adventure touring bikes
17:38 use. The R1250GS, Vstrom 1000 and now the Pan America. The 1917 combo is designed
17:47 primarily for road going motorcycles that want to have a little bit of
17:52 off-road ability. If you really want to get nasty with it though you want a 21
17:59 inch 21 inch front 18 inch rear wheel equipped motorcycle like an Africa Twin
18:06 or a KTM Super Adventure. That's for riders who really want to get nasty with
18:12 it. But to be fair BMW's R1250GS can get pretty nasty but they've just done such
18:17 a marvelous job of engineering the 1917 inch wheel combo over the decades that
18:24 they've made that motorcycle.
18:28 God this thing is just so comfortable. So neat not having any traditional
18:34 motorcycle sounds. You just hear the wind. You just hear the road. There's no chain
18:40 noise with that belt final drive. It's a real almost like serene experience. Talk
18:47 about tranquility and peacefulness. I like this adjustable manually adjustable
18:54 windscreen. It has a good range of adjustment. I'm running in the low
18:59 setting to get a little bit of airflow over my body. If it was colder out I
19:04 would definitely put it up but it's kind of warm today. It's probably about 78 80
19:08 degrees.
19:10 Rearview mirrors do a nice job of showing off what's behind.
19:20 This vehicle has a 12-volt power point right here. There's also two USB chargers
19:28 inside this Fox fuel tank. And we have heated grips which can be actuated with
19:37 this switch here right here. Three level adjustable heated grips for riding in
19:44 chilly weather. Oh yeah this thing gets some dude.
19:50 Let's see if we can switch the power modes on this motorcycle. All right to change the
20:01 power modes on this motorcycle you press this mode button in and then you press
20:07 it to the right. This mode button reminds me of the setup that Aprilia, that a
20:12 Piaggio group used to use many years ago. And this is one of the things I do not
20:17 like about these zero motorcycles is switch gears too old. They need to update
20:22 this. Preferably with a BMW style multi-wheel or a Yamaha style multi-wheel
20:30 with better tactile function. That's what we'd like to see on this bike. We're
20:35 riding in sport engine configuration
20:39 which is max beans. God this thing bones out. It's crazy how fast this bike is.
20:47 Like we said earlier thankfully it has a good strong set of triple hydraulic disc
20:54 brakes. But we'd be lying if we didn't say the brakes. They work great and
20:59 they have good power. Brake bite's a little bit, it's a little bit soft. And
21:07 power wise you really have to get in that lever for this thing to slow down.
21:11 You're stopping a lot of mass. So brakes work good but even more braking
21:18 power would be good just considering how heavy this vehicle is. I like this
21:27 five-inch color TFT display. The fonts are nice and sharp. It looks real crisp.
21:33 The font sizes are a little bit small though. Look at all this wasted space.
21:39 This should all be the display. Look how small the clock is. Look how small the
21:43 range is. Look how small the speed is. Zero motorcycles please increase the size of
21:50 the fonts on this display. They should be bigger.
21:57 Now with the 17.3 kilowatt hour battery pack, Zero claims this motorcycle is good
22:05 for a range of 85 highway miles. 85 highway miles. That's pretty good. If you
22:12 ride in the city it's over a hundred miles. If you ride off-road it's over a
22:17 hundred miles too. Highway is the worst energy consumption because you're going
22:22 at a constant speed. City and off-road you are varying your speed. You get a
22:28 benefit of a little bit of regen during deceleration. So that is why range is
22:34 increased in those scenarios.
22:39 Zero motorcycles also offers an accessory larger power pack. I think that
22:48 goes to 21 kilowatt hours. So for folks who want even more range you can buy
22:54 that. This vehicle comes standard with a 6 kilowatt hour charger that's been
23:01 repositioned before that charging apparatus was underneath the motorcycle
23:05 like on the Zero SRF. They had to move it to the tail section because this
23:11 motorcycle needed added ground clearance for off-highway use. Of course you can
23:18 always scale the charging system on this motorcycle. So if you need more charging
23:25 power you can buy an accessory 6 kilowatt charger and that effectively
23:31 doubles the charging rate on this vehicle.
23:40 I think it's neat that that this motorcycle has the J1772 level 2
23:48 charger. Realistically that's what most of the United States offers right now.
23:53 And those J1772 power ports are becoming increasingly more popular all over
24:01 America. Heck I want to put one in my garage here pretty soon so I can start
24:05 charging my EV vehicles. God this thing rides real nice. I talked about how heavy
24:15 it is when you're riding it. It doesn't feel very heavy, very agile. It's long
24:21 though. This is a long feeling motorcycle. It feels long nose to tail and then pair
24:27 it with the size XL ergonomics that are very large rider friendly. This motorcycle
24:34 feels like a 110% full-size motorcycle. It's big. This is the SUV of e-bikes no
24:44 doubt.
24:47 LED lighting front and rear helps this motorcycle stand out after dark. Curiously
25:00 however this bike has halogen bulb light bulbs. Zero why do we have halogen bulb
25:05 light bulbs? Please should be using LED turn signals on a 2023 vehicle. Because
25:17 we are on a lead follow style ride at a official press introduction we can't
25:25 just go ride wherever we want. We can't ride this motorcycle after dark. We can't
25:29 put this vehicle through our comprehensive battery of tests that we
25:34 do in every review. So the jury's still going to be out on the performance of
25:40 this motorcycle after dark. But judging by the shape of the LEDs they're pretty
25:47 big. They're pretty wide. They're pretty tall. I bet you anything this thing
25:52 probably throws off a good swath of light.
25:57 Let's switch our power mode again. Now we're going to go into eco. So eco power
26:05 mode uses the most amount of regen. Regen is almost like engine braking. So it
26:14 slows the motorcycle down without having to use the hydraulic brakes. And at the
26:19 same time that that engine brake like effect creates energy that goes back
26:28 into the power path. So you have more power to use later on. So for folks who
26:36 like a lot of engine braking, conventional engine braking effect
26:40 during deceleration, you're going to want a lot of regen. For folks that want more
26:46 of a freewheeling feel, then you're going to want less regen. I don't know. We're
26:52 going kind of slow right now because of this internal combustion engine powered
26:57 truck in front of us. So I'm perfectly happy riding in the mode we are riding
27:03 in.
27:10 Now the neat thing about these electric motorcycles is they're virtually devoid
27:17 of maintenance. Aside from periodic tension checks on the belt, final drive,
27:26 and hydraulic brake fluid flushes, that's pretty much the extent of the
27:33 maintenance on these vehicles. Of course you're going to have to update the
27:38 firmware on this bike every so often because Zero Motorcycles is always
27:46 improving its firmware and software. But if you're a motorcycle rider that wants
27:54 to spend more time riding and less time maintaining your bike or dealing with
27:59 maintenance, these EV bikes are a great option just because they're so devoid of
28:07 the typical maintenance of a gasoline motorcycle. All right folks, finally that
28:14 guy pulled off on the road. So we can open her up. Let's switch into Canyon
28:23 mode. Yes, Canyon mode. Oh yeah. I like Canyon mode. All right, let's give her the
28:32 beans. Oh yeah. This thing bones out nicely.
28:38 I love the handling of this bike. Who knew a 544 pound street bike can feel so agile?
28:48 Suspension feels well supported on this curvy road. Of course when we were riding
29:00 off-road we could feel the heft of that motorcycle trying to be controlled by
29:06 the suspension. You know, realistically even though this is an adventure dream
29:12 bike and props to Zero Motorcycles for actually being one of the first electric
29:18 motorcycle companies to make an adventure dream bike, you're not gonna
29:22 really get nasty with this bike. It just weighs too much. Still, for fire roads and
29:32 light off-roading, this motorcycle is more than capable for it. And realistically
29:39 that's the vast majority of EV riders. They're not gonna be getting nasty on
29:43 these bikes. So if you're not gonna be nasty, you may as well have something. Ooh, our
29:48 engine heat, I'm sorry, our motor heat is getting a little warm as you can see by
29:55 that flashing red sign. Let's see what happens.
30:01 We've been riding approximately 30 miles and we've used
30:08 about
30:11 one-third of our battery capacity. But to be fair we've been wailing on this
30:17 thing on the pavement, off-road less wailing. But the jury will still be out
30:25 on Zero Motorcycles 85 highway mile claim until we get one of these vehicles
30:35 at our office at home and put it through our battery of tests. Now another neat
30:46 thing about this Zero Motorcycles DSRX is that it uses Bosch sourced vehicle
30:55 stability and ABS controllers. Bosch sourced ABS and vehicle stability
31:04 controllers are class-leading.
31:08 Bosch and Zero Motorcycles have been working together for nearly a decade now.
31:14 So their electronics and their integration into their vehicles works
31:22 really well. What's up? That's all good. Yep, yep, yep, it's good. Good pace man, nice
31:29 bike. What happens when the motor gets hot?
31:36 Okay, no it was red it was flashing. Yeah, okay sweet.
31:50 Yeah, so if it gets hot it doesn't even matter everything's good.
31:56 Uh-huh. Okay, so if you hit if the motor gets hot like that it'll pull down power
32:04 it'll reduce power a little bit but it's not going to have any detrimental effect
32:10 on the vehicle. That person we were talking to is the official Zero
32:17 Motorcycles test rider. On the road again we are back on the road again on the
32:23 2023 Zero Motorcycles DSR-X. I like this bike. It offers something a little bit
32:33 different compared to internal combustion engine equipped motorcycle.
32:38 The lack of noise, lack of engine heat, lack of engine vibration. I like all of
32:44 these features. It makes for a real pleasing motorcycle experience. It's cool
32:51 just kind of having the wind over your helmet and just kind of experiencing it.
32:58 It's almost like you're flying in a way. You're just flying. It's kind of neat.
33:02 Will it, will this bike replace the internal combustion engine equipped
33:08 adventure terrain bike in my garage? Probably not. You know I like
33:16 gasoline-powered adventure terrain bikes because you can get nasty on them and go
33:20 crazy places and fuels everywhere but there will come a day probably in the
33:26 next 15-20 years where the tides change and it's gonna be EV bikes only
33:32 probably. So may as well get used to it. May as well embrace the change and Zero
33:40 Motorcycles is doing a nice job and it's a very valiant effort with its first
33:47 adventure terrain bike in the DSRX. Alright folks we're gonna cruise on back
33:55 to our hotel. We've logged around 50 miles today. Not a super long ride. Gonna
33:59 use about 50% of the battery capacity over that 50 mile ride duration but
34:08 we're gonna pull back into the our lodging accommodations and wrap this
34:15 thing up. We'll see you folks later. Alright folks there it is. We had a nice
34:19 ride on Zero Motorcycles 2023 DSRX. We rode about 50 miles today and used 40%
34:33 battery capacity. Not a bad day. I like this motorcycle. I like how big it is.
34:42 You know I'm a taller guy. Six foot tall. I weigh kind of too much right now and
34:47 this big motorcycle fits me well. Yeah the ergonomics are maybe not the most
34:54 well-suited to a smaller human being besides the the low to the ground rider
35:02 seat. I think it's a pretty neat motorcycle. Visually I'm I'm kind of into
35:09 it. I like its oblivion-esque looks. I like the the sinks on the battery pack
35:18 and the sinks on the Z Force motor. This motor is actually the first Zero
35:27 Motorcycles motor that it is manufacturing in California. So this
35:32 whole motorcycle you see here is assembled in California. It's not like
35:39 Apple where they make their iPhones and MacBook Pros in China. These guys build
35:44 it from foreign source parts in America and I think that's pretty neat. Would I
35:50 spend my $24,500 on one of these 2023 Zero DSRX's? I don't know. I mean I
36:04 definitely this bike would work good for my lifestyle around home. It'd be good
36:08 for running errands because it's got so much storage capacity. It's big so it
36:12 stands out on the road. It's comfortable. It hauls ass. I like those features but for
36:18 $24,500 it's a little bit too expensive for me. Not saying that it's a nice bike. I
36:24 still would gravitate towards internal combustion adventure terrain bike but
36:30 that said this DSRX still has a lot going for it and it would work pretty
36:37 good for my lifestyle in Southern California. It's comfortable. It has a
36:43 good range, great power, good utility and if you're someone who doesn't want a
36:48 monkey with gasoline and maintenance and all that kind of stuff this $24,500
36:56 DSRX from Zero Motorcycles might be a good option for you. Well folks that's a
37:02 wrap from the official North American press introduction of this 2023 Zero
37:08 Motorcycles DSRX vehicle. Make sure to surf on over to MotorcyclistsOnline.com
