Pharmacies across England are being given new powers to treat ‘common conditions’ in a move to “free up time” for hospitals and GPs. Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Victoria Atkins called the move “critical”.

00:00 Very much so. Through Pharmacy First, not only are we expanding the existing services
00:05 that are available to members of our community, both in terms of blood pressure checks and
00:10 contraception services, but we're also going to be rolling out powers, new powers for pharmacists
00:17 to help people with seven of the most common and basic conditions. So really freeing up
00:24 to 10 million GP appointments we think, but also I think critically using our wonderful
00:30 pharmacists across the country and really deploying their skills as part of our whole
00:35 NHS system.
