00:00 Can you just talk about the day that the guy who just stepped up?
00:03 >> Yeah, I mean, every time I looked for him, he was running wide open.
00:08 Just making guys miss and running great routes.
00:11 And I'm so proud of him, what a day for him, happy for him.
00:15 And he's a team player,
00:16 he's been some weeks where I haven't gotten the balls, much as I would like to.
00:20 And so for him to go out and have the day he did today, it's just awesome to see.
00:25 Couldn't say one more about who he is as a person and a player.
00:28 >> On the first one, did you think he'd make it 0-81 yards?
00:31 >> When he caught it, I was like, well, we're gonna need to block.
00:35 And Savion made a heck of a walk.
00:37 And so we talked about last night at the hotel about having championship level
00:40 effort.
00:41 And Savion, he comes off this route, he beats us at the corner,
00:46 so I could have done it with him too.
00:47 He comes off this route and pins the guy chasing Jared, and Jared scores.
00:51 And so that just shows you what kind of guy Savion is.
00:55 And playing receiver, it's obviously important to play well with the ball, but
00:59 you're only gonna have a ball eight out of the 75 plays if you have a good game.
01:03 So it's about what you do when you don't have the ball.
01:05 And so Savion's a great example of that.
01:08 And yeah, I knew Jared was rolling pretty good, and he's pretty fast.
01:11 So I thought he had a chance, but I thought he got in.
01:14 >> You had a pretty big game yourself.
01:16 How much do you feel like you just kind of grown as a player since that BYU game?
01:20 >> Yeah, you see a bunch of different situations and looks and
01:24 blitzes, and you just kind of start to recognize things and
01:28 just understand when you need to take a chance and when you don't.
01:32 And when to check it down.
01:33 And so I think just playing has really helped me and
01:36 just developing over the last couple games has been big.
01:39 And just looking forward to continuing to find ways to get better.
01:43 And we haven't reached our ceiling, that's for sure.
01:46 So we're definitely going back to work tomorrow and
01:48 gonna get this thing figured out going forward.
01:52 >> You had a couple good runs in third quarter, that big long run on third down,
01:56 I believe.
01:57 How good a feeling to get some yards on the ground?
02:00 >> Yeah, we called a draw there, and we knew they were gonna play two man,
02:05 which is perfect for a draw.
02:06 And so Coach Brawley's made a great call.
02:09 I mean, when I saw it, I was like, and then sure enough,
02:12 there's a look we wanted, and that's why we pay him the big bucks.
02:15 So he made a great call, a bunch of great calls on third down tonight, and
02:19 it felt good to pick up the first down.
02:21 I was trying to get in, but I kinda slipped there and got tackled.
02:25 But I got to get it in there.
02:27 >> Josh, with the season that's been,
02:29 how important is it that you have this win and
02:30 have the opportunity now next week to get the ball?
02:33 >> It's awesome.
02:34 We've got our eyes on one thing, and that's beating WU next week.
02:38 And we're gonna go do whatever it takes to try and get that done.
02:43 And I think we're all really focused on doing that.
02:46 And it's kinda good this week that we don't have school over Thanksgiving break.
02:49 And we can just really lock in and spend a lot of time preparing,
02:53 just getting ready to go.
02:54 So it feels like a playoff game to me, like a high school playoff game.
02:58 It's like you win or you go home.
02:59 And so we're focused on getting it done.
03:01 And I wanna play the whole game, just spend three more weeks with these guys.
03:06 We're never gonna be around these guys again.
03:09 And this team is this year.
03:12 And so that's what's motivated me, is just to play another game and
03:16 to spend more time with Josh Newton and Jared Wiley and
03:19 these guys that I love so much.
03:20 And John Lance, maybe back again against his brother tonight,
03:23 which is kinda odd.
03:24 But just that's what's motivating us.
03:28 >> How important was it to get points on the board early in the first half,
03:32 in the first half, and kinda take that momentum going in the second half too?
03:37 >> You said getting points on?
03:38 >> Yeah, and then instead of having to score all the way in the second half.
03:41 >> Yeah, yeah, no, it was definitely good that we were able to start fast in
03:45 the first half.
03:46 We really should have been up 28 to 10, I think, at halftime.
03:50 We didn't execute very well in the first quarter on the goal line.
03:54 And we had a couple plays, we should have had back.
03:56 But it felt great getting some points and having an early lead.
03:59 And just kinda gives you that comfort, not comfort, but a little bit of a cushion.
04:03 And I think it gives the defense confidence that they can go out and
04:05 just play free.
04:06 And so it definitely helped, I thought.
04:08 >> Josh, you've got five starts under your belt now.
04:10 How do you feel you've grown from starting to walking out?
04:13 >> Well, it feels like I got about 50 after these five.
04:17 It's been, I felt like I've definitely grown a lot.
04:22 And I kinda talked about it, but the ups and the downs.
04:26 You have to go through some of that sometimes to grow and to learn.
04:29 And I'm thankful for Coach Dykes and Coach Bryles and the offensive staff for
04:33 believing in me and giving me a chance.
04:35 You've been through some of these ups and downs.
04:36 And it just has given me confidence to continue to get better and
04:40 continue to grind and just be patient with this process.
04:44 And I'm thankful for the guys around me and the way that they play.
04:47 I can't say enough about our offense line tonight.
04:50 I mean, they did an unbelievable job.
04:52 I could have sat down back there, got up and tied my shoes,
04:55 still threw it 30 times.
04:56 So they played unbelievable, I'm proud of them.
05:00 >> You talked about how they get the same text every week that you're up here
05:04 watching film, they wanna come talk to you.
05:06 Is there a person that's had the biggest impact on you on watching film and
05:09 any reports of that?
05:10 >> Yeah, my dad played football.
05:14 And he always told us that there's only, there's a physical part of the game and
05:19 there's a mental part of the game.
05:20 And you get the edge and the mental part.
05:22 Everybody's gonna be out there practicing and doing all that when you get to
05:25 a certain level.
05:25 But it's the guys that spend the time to pick up maybe on one thing.
05:29 You might watch three hours of film just to find one little thing on a third down
05:33 to say, okay, when this guy blitzes at the corner, it's weak backside.
05:36 And just whatever it is,
05:37 you watch all that from just to get little edges like that.
05:40 And so my dad's made a huge impact on me and just the mental side of the game.
05:44 I remember from a young age, him explaining to me what was going on.
05:48 I played linebacker, he played linebacker playing.
05:50 And so when I'm literally saying, look at their knuckles.
05:52 If their knuckles are white, their weight's on the front,
05:55 they're just gonna be a run.
05:56 If he's sitting high, he's either pulling or it's a pass.
05:58 So just picking up on those little things through film has been huge and
06:01 just influenced by my dad.
06:03 >> You and Jared's connection seems to have gotten stronger over the last
06:05 three weeks.
06:06 What's led to the increase in production?
06:08 >> I think just me understanding the offense and
06:11 just doing a better job of getting it to him.
06:14 Jared's been playing well all year.
06:15 It's just you gotta get the ball to him.
06:17 And so he's a really savvy guy.
06:20 I think our connection just kinda got better over the last couple weeks of
06:22 playing together.
06:23 I never really thrown into these guys, cuz I was always the second team guy.
06:26 And so when you get to practice and go all week and throw them and
06:29 just build that chemistry, it really helps.
06:31 I hit Sabian on a deep one today, and same deal.
06:34 Sabian and I and all those receivers, our connections got better,
06:37 especially Jared.
06:39 >> How much did the defense's performance in the second half,
06:42 all those scored down stops, things like that, help you guys on offense?
06:45 >> Yeah, we talk about playing complimentary football, and that's really big.
06:49 And so when they go get a stop and we go score, that's huge.
06:53 It's the energy, it's the momentum.
06:55 Excuse me, and just that momentum's huge, especially at home.
06:59 The crowd's into it.
07:00 And so just playing complimentary football is huge, and
07:03 the defense did a great job of giving us opportunities tonight to go score,
07:06 and with short fields and all that stuff.
07:08 >> We'll go two more questions if you have them.
07:10 >> It didn't look like, you guys were having success no matter what on offense.
07:14 It didn't look like Baylor had an answer.
07:16 How much confidence does that give you guys as you head up to Oklahoma next week?
07:21 >> Yeah, it gives us a lot of confidence that when you do the things you're supposed
07:24 to do, and you know what to do, and you execute, and you're where you're supposed
07:27 to be, and I take care of the ball, and the offense line does what they do every week.
07:32 It gives you confidence that you can go out and score points no matter what you're
07:36 doing, so we believe that we're a good offense and we have good players.
07:39 And so to be successful, all you have to do is just do your job and
07:43 be in the right spot and just trust one another.
07:45 And I think that's what we did tonight, so it gives us confidence coming into next
07:48 week that that's all we need to do is just be us.
