00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So you are probably sick to death of me talking about SUVs.
00:04 So I have a reward for you patient people who watch me all the time.
00:08 The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake.
00:11 It's like a wagon, but a shooting brake, which is like a sleek looking wagon.
00:15 This is available in Australia in one specification.
00:19 This is priced at just under $80,000.
00:22 This competes with things like the BMW 3 Series,
00:25 the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake and the Audi A4 Avant.
00:30 Even though the BMW and the Audi are just sort of standard wagons in that sense.
00:33 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car.
00:36 So if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of the review,
00:38 you can use the time codes on the screen, or if you're on YouTube,
00:40 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:43 And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel,
00:44 press the bell icon.
00:45 That's going to tell you every single time we drive these very, very white cars.
00:49 Now let's talk exterior.
00:52 So you've got 15 external colors to pick from, and guess what?
00:55 They are all free of charge, except the matte colors.
00:57 They're $2,000 extra.
00:59 I've said this before on Genesis Reviews, the matte colors look sensational.
01:03 And I think regardless of which model you choose, be daring, get a matte color.
01:07 I think they just look fantastic. Sorry about the flies.
01:09 Now, what about the design?
01:11 So G70, it is a very similar product to the Stinger.
01:15 And in that sense, we have reviewed the G70 before, and I did enjoy it
01:20 because I like the Stinger as well.
01:21 It's got that sort of punchy engine.
01:23 This one here is only available in Australia with the four-cylinder petrol.
01:26 So I think that sort of doesn't take away from it too much.
01:29 Up the front here, you've got that big proudly worn Genesis logo.
01:33 You've got a radar just down the bottom here, and they've tried to sort of
01:36 disguise that within the grille by giving it the same design
01:39 as the grille elements just next to it.
01:41 Those grille elements have this gold finish to them as well.
01:44 It's like a glossy gold finish, and I think that looks really nice.
01:46 And then down the bottom here, that sort of changes to just a matte black finish.
01:50 So that integrates nicely with the body color.
01:52 So cooling there for the engine and down the bottom as well.
01:55 Big number plate section there and then a camera hidden up the top.
01:58 Over here, in terms of the headlights, you have LED daytime running lights
02:02 and a full set of LED headlights.
02:05 So quite a nice little array there.
02:07 And again, just like other Genesis products, this is the signature there
02:09 with that twin daytime running light setup that turns into an indicator as well.
02:14 Around the side here, you've got a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.
02:18 It's got that machined finish on the outside and then a glossy finish
02:22 on the inside. Really nice design.
02:24 And these remind me of another car.
02:27 I don't know exactly what it is, but the wheels look familiar.
02:31 If you know what it is, let me know in the comments section below.
02:33 Behind there, you've got a big set of Brembo stoppers.
02:35 The tires are pretty decent as well.
02:36 It's got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s on it.
02:39 So they are a pretty sort of grippy tire in the dry and they do an OK job in the wet.
02:43 It's my only issue with Michelin's wet performance isn't amazing.
02:47 Over here, you've got like a fake air vent built into the side of the car.
02:51 Along the top here, you have a chrome finish around the wing mirror, LED indicator,
02:56 and then a camera down here for both the 360 camera
02:59 and also the blind spot camera that I'll show you when we go for a bit of a drive.
03:03 At the top here, you have an opening sunroof that sort of cuts off
03:07 halfway down the back of the car there.
03:10 And then if you come around to the rear, have a look at this.
03:12 So this is the bit I love the most about this car.
03:15 It is such a unique design and it really turns heads.
03:18 The sedan looks good.
03:20 I think the sedan looks fantastic, but this really takes it to another level.
03:23 So up the top there, you've got a shark fin aerial.
03:25 Have a look at this spoiler element.
03:26 So you've got air that runs along the top of the car
03:29 and then down through here and down the back glass.
03:31 So it is a really nice, sleek looking design.
03:33 Brake light built into this section just here.
03:36 And then your wiper sits here with a button here to open the boot.
03:39 Genesis branding just there.
03:41 And then G70 with two litre turbo.
03:43 I do love these LED taillight elements as well.
03:47 They really make the car stand out at nighttime.
03:49 And then you have a twin set of real exhaust pipes down the bottom.
03:52 So let me know what you reckon about the shooting brake design.
03:55 Do you think it looks good?
03:56 And would you get this over the sedan version?
03:58 Let me know what you reckon in the comments section below.
04:00 OK, so we are inside the G70.
04:03 I do apologize. I have a drinking problem.
04:06 I've spilt stuff all over me.
04:07 So that's what that is.
04:08 This is what the key looks like.
04:10 So you've got lock, unlock, remote start, boot.
04:14 And then on the back, you have the Genesis logo.
04:17 I love this, though.
04:18 Watch this. So, bang, it's like a switchblade type thing.
04:22 So this deploys if you want to attach this to a key chain or something like that.
04:27 Or if you just want to keep it in your pocket, you can just close that up.
04:29 This is a proximity sensing key.
04:31 So you leave that in your pocket and then you have a push button start to kick things off.
04:35 Now, the design.
04:36 This is what I like about Genesis.
04:38 They're just a little bit more daring in terms of the design and the way they present things.
04:41 So this isn't quite what you see in the GV70,
04:46 which has that giant infotainment screen and feels a little more futuristic than this does.
04:50 But in saying that, this still actually looks quite cool.
04:53 Ahead of us, we have that big display with the 3D elements that I'll go through later on.
04:57 You've got this sort of leather stitching all the way down the side of the car.
05:01 And it's got this darker brown tanned leather, which I think looks great as well.
05:04 And they're nicely separated with these brushed aluminium highlights.
05:08 So really nice looking interior and big fan of sort of what they've done here.
05:12 So double tick there.
05:14 Now, what about your touch points?
05:15 So a little bit firm there in the centre, soft on the doors.
05:19 How soft is it?
05:20 Well, we've got our durometer.
05:21 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
05:23 If you want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before,
05:26 have a look at the link in the description.
05:28 Now, what about build quality?
05:31 That actually feels nice and solid.
05:34 There is a rattle coming out of this roof, though, and according to Genesis,
05:38 it's a known issue, but that is annoying and shouldn't exist on a new car.
05:42 What about our door?
05:44 Yeah, that's got a really nice and confident thud to it as well.
05:49 Moving on to infotainment.
05:51 So this is going to look familiar.
05:53 It's similar to other Kia and Hyundai infotainment systems.
05:56 So that's your home screen there.
05:57 It's a 10.25 inch display.
05:59 You have profile selection up the top there.
06:01 And then as you swipe across, this is where you see the rest of your menu items.
06:05 A couple of things I thought I'd point out.
06:07 You have a manual built into the infotainment screen.
06:10 You also have sounds of nature.
06:12 So it means if you do want some
06:14 soothing noises, it will play those.
06:16 And it's actually pretty cool
06:17 because I can hear the 3D stuff out the back there as well.
06:20 So really nice little setup there.
06:22 Get rid of sounds of nature.
06:24 Over here, you also have radio in the form of AM, FM and DAB plus digital radio.
06:30 That's all pumped through a 15 speaker lexicon branded sound system,
06:36 and it is a great sound system, really impressive.
06:39 And one of the better ones I've heard in a car recently.
06:41 In addition to that, you have a voice memo function
06:44 and the ability to project your smartphone onto the screen.
06:46 Also has inbuilt satellite navigation.
06:49 I'll show you what Apple CarPlay and Android Auto looks like.
06:51 I'm going to start off with Apple CarPlay.
06:53 So full screen integration, and that is so quick and sharp as well.
06:57 Very impressive setup.
06:59 Let's have a look at Android Auto.
07:00 So, yeah, full screen integration, but you can't get this on the side.
07:04 So I've been told that this is a limitation of Android Auto and not the vehicle.
07:09 So it just makes no sense to me if you're at Android's or Google's
07:14 sort of coming up with this stuff and you go, OK, let's make the display.
07:17 Who comes up with the idea to just stop the display there
07:20 and not have anything on this side? It is truly bizarre.
07:23 So if you know the reason why, let me know down there.
07:25 Let's talk quickly about the screen ahead of the driver.
07:28 So you get this stuff here.
07:29 So instead of analog gauges, it's a full digital display.
07:32 You might think to yourself, yeah, big deal.
07:34 But what they've done here is actually it's a little bit trippy.
07:37 So it's a 3D display.
07:39 So what you can do is adjust things like the design.
07:44 So I'll show you how that switches between the different designs.
07:46 So you can see that sort of movement between those.
07:49 But more interestingly is the 3D mode.
07:52 So there it's off.
07:53 And then if I go to maximum, it's really hard for us to capture this on video,
07:57 but it adds depth to that screen.
07:59 So basically layers everything.
08:01 So when you look at it, it all looks 3D.
08:04 I don't love it because while you're driving it,
08:07 it kind of it's a bit hard to focus on things.
08:10 I don't know if that's just me, but, you know,
08:12 I like the fact that they've done something like that,
08:14 but it can be just a little bit distracting while you are driving.
08:17 But it is there nevertheless.
08:19 In the center, you have your trip computer and you can run through those
08:21 different settings and then run through different menus as well.
08:25 So, yeah, cool setup.
08:27 And I think it's great to see that it's standard on this particular specification.
08:30 Safety technology.
08:31 So you have autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
08:35 It's low and high speed AEP.
08:38 You have an auto dimming rear vision mirror, lane departure warning
08:41 and a lane keeping assistant.
08:43 It has a self-steering function, but it doesn't really work that well.
08:46 I think I mentioned in our Sorrento review that,
08:48 especially at the moment with all the roadworks that are going on,
08:52 the car's just all over the place, doesn't know which lines to use.
08:54 So I just turn that stuff off.
08:56 You get radar cruise control.
08:58 Now you have blind spot monitoring on the wing mirror,
09:00 but you get the blind spot monitor on the display here as well.
09:04 And I think this is such a great integration,
09:07 one of my favourite features of Kia and Hyundai products.
09:09 I'll show you what that looks like when we go out for a drive.
09:12 You get rear cross traffic alert.
09:14 And then in terms of parking, you have both front and rear
09:16 parking sensors and a 360 camera.
09:18 I'll show you what that looks like.
09:20 There it is there.
09:21 So the quality is actually pretty good.
09:22 It's quite overcast today, but plenty of detail.
09:24 Camera sits quite low as well.
09:26 So you're getting some good definition on the ground there.
09:28 You can then change the views as required.
09:31 So this one looks down the back there.
09:33 Don't curve the wheels.
09:35 But yeah, plenty of options there to see exactly what the car is doing
09:38 and then guidelines that move with the steering wheel as well.
09:40 OK, now practicality and we'll start off with your connectivity options.
09:43 So you've got a 12 volt outlet down the bottom here, USB port,
09:47 and then you have wireless phone charging.
09:49 You also have a USB port here in the centre console
09:52 with your wireless phone charging and storage of your phone in general.
09:55 You just whack your phone down on that little pad there.
09:57 It'll kick off or you can pop your phone in the centre there
10:00 where the drink holders are.
10:02 Speaking of drinks, a little coffee cup.
10:05 Yeah, it wasn't as successful as I wanted it to be this morning
10:09 because look at this. It just disappears into there.
10:10 So I kind of just prop my keys under it.
10:13 So it sits a little higher and that kind of tends to do the job.
10:16 In addition to that, you have little teeth there holding your bottle in.
10:19 Bottle fits in there nicely and the bottle goes inside the door too.
10:25 I reckon we're going to have no luck at all with our big bottles.
10:28 So it doesn't fit in there.
10:30 It doesn't fit inside the door either.
10:32 Other storage.
10:33 So you have your centre console here, reasonably sized.
10:37 You have a glove box over here.
10:39 Kind of OK. Once your manual's in there, it takes up a bit of room,
10:42 but it's not the end of the world.
10:44 And finally, you have a sunglasses holder up the top here.
10:47 And finally, comfort.
10:49 You have dual zone automatic climate control up the front here.
10:51 You've got heated and cooled seats for both the driver and the front passenger.
10:55 You have a heated steering wheel.
10:58 I love the seat design.
11:00 Wowee, this looks so cool.
11:01 So you've got that same sort of brown finish,
11:03 a little bit of brushed aluminium up the top there,
11:06 and then it's all perforated with the diamond stitching as well.
11:09 Now that premium finish on the seats goes over to the doors as well.
11:13 You've got that diamond stitching there.
11:14 Then all the way up the top here, you've got this suede-like material
11:18 and a sunroof there as well.
11:21 So it is a pretty impressive setup.
11:23 In terms of seat adjustment, both the driver and front passenger seat
11:26 are electrically adjustable.
11:28 So you can go forwards, backwards, backrest, forwards, backwards.
11:31 You can adjust your bolster in and out.
11:34 You can move the front section of the seat in and out.
11:36 There really are a whole stack of adjustments there that you had access to.
11:40 You also have memory for the driver's side.
11:43 The steering wheel is electrically adjustable and offers both tilt
11:47 and reach adjustment.
11:49 And then our reach test.
11:50 So that stuff is all easy to reach while you're driving.
11:53 There is no room back here at all.
11:57 Have a look at this.
11:57 My knees are like well and truly wedged into there, but even worse,
12:00 my toes are just literally wedged under the seat.
12:04 I can't even move them and headroom is OK.
12:07 Yeah, look, my seat is quite far back, but I don't know,
12:11 it's just the standard driving position I have in all of these cars.
12:14 And this is really poor amount of leg room for something that's as big as this is.
12:19 So, yeah, a little disappointed with that.
12:21 Air vents down here.
12:22 You've got a USB point down there.
12:24 You've also got the ability to move your passenger seat forwards
12:28 and backwards using controls attached to the seat.
12:30 You've got map pockets just there.
12:32 Center armrest with two cup holders.
12:34 So your bottle can easily slide into there.
12:36 It can also fit inside the door.
12:39 Actually, no it can't.
12:42 The packaging back here is really bad.
12:45 So, yeah, this is your only option for bottle storage.
12:49 You do have heated seats here, though, for the two outboard seats.
12:53 And then let's see if our window goes all the way down.
12:55 Yes, it does. There you go.
12:56 There is one bonus there, which is quite nice.
12:58 I do like the seat designs.
13:00 You've got that sort of diamond quilting on that as well.
13:02 You've got ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats with top tether points as well.
13:07 So, yeah, really not impressed here in terms of the packaging and the space available.
13:12 OK, cargo space.
13:14 So push this little button here.
13:17 It is a powered tailgate.
13:19 Up it goes.
13:20 Now, you do have a little bit of storage under the floor here.
13:23 So that's where you'll find your space saver spare tyre plus the jack.
13:27 In total, you have just under 500 litres worth of cargo space available here.
13:32 You've got some hooks off to the side there and then some netting as well.
13:35 Show you what it looks like with our bags in there.
13:37 So laptop bag.
13:39 Now, our suitcase is currently MIA.
13:42 It's lost somewhere.
13:43 So this here is kind of in between
13:46 the carry on suitcase you take on a plane and a mid-sized suitcase.
13:49 That gives you an idea of how much room you have there.
13:53 Then what you can do as well is drop the second row from back here
13:57 by pulling these levers.
14:00 So that gives you a little bit more space there.
14:02 I thought I'd call this out as well.
14:03 So you've got a roadside assistance kit.
14:08 And when you crack that open, it comes with all of the stuff you need.
14:13 If you're ever stuck on the side of the road, bit of rain like today, you've got a poncho.
14:16 You've got a towel in case you want to do a workout on the side of the road
14:19 and then a flashlight plus some gloves as well and reflective vests.
14:23 So pretty cool set up there.
14:24 And then in addition to that, you also have
14:27 a first aid kit too.
14:31 So look, I think when they're trying to go for their sort of luxury theme,
14:35 they're fitting the brief because they're adding stuff like this
14:38 that you really just don't find in cars anymore.
14:40 So it is pretty cool to see that they are actually thinking about that stuff.
14:47 We have hit the road in the G70 shooting break.
14:49 Now, I've mentioned this a couple of times now, but this is only available
14:53 in Australia with the 2.0L turbo 4.
14:55 I would love to see this with a twin turbo V6, but this is what we have to work with.
14:59 So that produces 179 kilowatts of power and 353 newton meters of torque.
15:06 So it's actually not that bad, given that this car weighs around that 1,500-1,600 kilo mark.
15:10 So it sort of sits right in there and it's good sort of power to weight balance.
15:14 And that's all mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter.
15:19 So no dual clutch setup here, all just torque converter.
15:21 And it means that it is nice and smooth while it's driving.
15:24 And you're getting that sort of communication through the gearbox
15:28 without those abrupt changes, especially at low speed.
15:30 And the interesting thing here is this is rear wheel drive.
15:34 You get, yes, the big brakes up the front there, but a limited slip differential,
15:38 which I think is pretty cool.
15:40 So what does it all feel like?
15:41 So if I give this a little boot here.
15:43 OK, so
15:45 the reason I'm laughing is I can hear it making a whole bunch of noise,
15:50 but it's not actually going all that fast.
15:52 So I'll be quiet.
15:53 Hear that sound?
15:56 So that is the active sound design.
15:59 That means it is plumbing noise through these speakers.
16:01 Thankfully, you can switch all of that off here through the menu.
16:04 And I think that is probably the smarter thing to do.
16:06 But in terms of how it feels, it's actually nice and responsive behind the wheel.
16:10 It feels like it's on its tippy toes and it's a bit hard to describe.
16:12 But what I mean there is as you apply the throttle,
16:15 it feels like it's sort of sitting up and it's sort of getting ready to attack.
16:19 So it does sort of feel nice behind the wheel.
16:21 And that's just in its standard drive mode.
16:22 You have a bunch of drive modes here to choose from.
16:24 You've got Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Custom.
16:28 Genesis claims a combined fuel economy of 9.1 litres per 100 k's.
16:32 Let's have a quick sticky beg here at what we are doing.
16:36 So we're currently on 10.7.
16:38 So, you know, kind of close to that figure.
16:41 We have been having a little fang around here today,
16:43 so it is obviously going to be a little higher than usual.
16:45 But if you do a lot of highway driving, this is where this engine really excels
16:49 because it's not a huge amount of weight to be moving
16:51 and it's not going to be using all that much fuel to get you there.
16:54 OK, let's talk about the ride.
16:57 So I'll dial up the speed a little bit here to highway speeds
17:01 and we've got our sine waves here, our continuous undulations.
17:06 This car, of course, doesn't have an Australian right and handling tune.
17:09 So Hyundai is doing less and less of that in Australia.
17:11 Look, actually, it doesn't feel too bad here.
17:15 The body has a fair bit of control to it, even in sport mode,
17:18 where it's nice and smooth.
17:20 So, yeah, pretty impressed with that.
17:21 I'm noticing a lot of tyre noise coming into the cabin, though.
17:24 So at highway speeds on these course chip roads, you really do have a lot of noise
17:28 that filters in through the cabin via those tyres.
17:31 So, you know, I wish there was just a little bit more quietness here
17:35 in the cabin while driving.
17:36 Let's talk visibility.
17:39 So down the sides there, the wing mirrors are a decent size.
17:42 You have a blind spot monitor built into those.
17:44 But like I mentioned to you, when you put the indicator on, have a look at that.
17:47 You have a camera come up on either side.
17:50 So that's giving you some really good flexibility and visibility
17:52 down the side of the car.
17:54 Vision out the rear is not too bad.
17:56 The envelope is big enough there, so you can clearly see out the back there
18:00 without any dramas.
18:01 And in terms of low speed driving steering feel, it is very light at low speed.
18:05 So it is easy to park.
18:07 So let's put it into sport mode and see what it feels like.
18:13 It is a little wet out here today, so I'm going to be a little gingerly
18:16 with the throttle.
18:18 I'll dial it through this corner here and get on that.
18:21 OK, there you go.
18:23 So it sounds like it's going quick, but it is actually it's not too bad.
18:27 So the body doesn't sit dead flat because this doesn't get adaptive damping
18:31 here in Australia.
18:33 But it is surprisingly agile as the speeds pick up.
18:36 So it bounces around a little bit if you hit a bump mid corner,
18:40 but it is pretty confidence inspiring.
18:42 What I mentioned earlier, it feels like it's on its tippy toes.
18:45 That's what you got to watch out when you get on the throttle,
18:47 because it is pretty eager to rotate if you get on the throttle hard.
18:51 But it's got a really good balance there between fun and sort of the agility
18:55 that you'd expect to feel behind the wheel.
18:57 Got a slightly faster corner coming through here.
19:02 Yeah, it actually doesn't feel too bad.
19:04 It changes direction easily as well.
19:06 So I mentioned earlier that you do have the limited slip differential.
19:10 That means that if you do want to be a little bit silly,
19:12 especially if it's wet and you switch everything off,
19:15 you can seriously hang this thing out sideways.
19:17 So it doesn't have quite enough power to have that kind of fun when it's dry,
19:24 but if it is wet, it's kind of like a drift wagon.
19:27 I think it's pretty cool.
19:28 (ENGINE REVS)
19:30 Genesis claims a 0-100 time of 6.4 seconds.
19:36 It is a little bit damp today, so we've done the run twice,
19:39 once with stability control on, once with it off,
19:41 and this is how it went up against our stopwatch.
19:44 (ENGINE REVS)
19:46 (ENGINE REVS)
19:48 So the G70's shooting brake.
20:12 Look, from a design perspective, it looks sensational.
20:14 Out on the road, it cuts a fine line,
20:16 and look, if you're not going to get an SUV and you want to buck the trend,
20:19 get something that looks as good as this does,
20:21 especially if you can get it with, like, a matte colour.
20:23 I think that'd be the way to go.
20:24 Look, ultimately, I was a little bit disappointed with the four-cylinder turbo.
20:28 I wasn't expecting it to, you know, pull the, you know, skin off my face or anything like that,
20:32 but I was hoping it would be a little bit quicker and a bit more engaging to drive.
20:36 To its credit, if it is wet and you switch everything off,
20:39 it can be like a little sort of power slide machine, which I think is pretty cool,
20:43 but I would love to see it with a turbo V6,
20:46 and it's a real shame we don't get that here in Australia.
20:48 So, anyway, what can you do?
20:50 Now, let me know in the comments section below, have you bought a Genesis before?
20:54 What's it like?
20:54 They've just introduced a guaranteed future value program in Australia,
20:58 so I think that should help people get into them
21:00 and know what the car's going to be worth down the track.
21:02 And if you did buy one, what's it like to live with?
21:04 Is it expensive to run, and what is it like long-term?
