00:01 A couple of years ago, Toyota announced that it was going to be releasing a hardcore halo
00:05 and an Apex off-road variant.
00:07 This is that car.
00:09 It is the Toyota GR Sport Hilux.
00:11 So we thought, why not take Australia's best-selling car and stick it up against Australia's second
00:16 best-selling car, the Ford Ranger.
00:19 And guess what?
00:20 They also have a hardcore halo and an Apex off-road variant.
00:24 Now, I know what you're thinking, 15 grand price difference, probably not that fair.
00:27 So what we thought we would do is do a drag race between this one, the Raptor, and then
00:32 we'll go down the tree to the V6 and the four-cylinder, which are cheaper than this, and see who's
00:37 going to win in a straight line.

00:56 We're going to kick off with the Hilux up against the Ranger Raptor.
01:00 The Ranger Raptor is significantly more expensive than this, but it is Ford's hardcore halo.
01:05 It's their off-road variant.
01:06 It is what this is to Toyota.
01:08 So we want to see how it goes.
01:10 Then we're going to work our way through the Ranger range to see if this actually competes
01:14 with any of them.
01:15 Now, we're going to run all of these in two-wheel drive high range as well, just so it's equal
01:19 to the Hilux.
01:20 This can't be run in four-wheel drive high range on sealed surfaces, whereas the Ranger
01:25 Raptor can, but we're going to switch it over to two-wheel drive high range, just for the
01:28 purpose of the drag race here.
01:30 Now, just as a reminder, 165 kilowatts of power, 550 newton meters of torque in the
01:35 Hilux compared to around 300 kilowatts of power in the Ranger Raptor.
01:39 So I think I know how this is going to go, but we'll see anyway.
01:42 I'm going to turn traction control off in this as well, because it sometimes bogs down
01:46 a little bit off the line there.

02:32 So unsurprisingly, the Ranger Raptor won there.
02:36 It got off the line nice and quick and once it started moving, it absolutely hammered.
02:40 Even in two-wheel drive, high range, it still hooked up and went, which is good.
02:44 So all right, that was kind of a bit of a no-no, but it did get comprehensively spanked.
02:49 So time to line up with something that is a little bit closer to this in terms of price.
02:55 Okay, so next up is this thing.
02:57 So that is the Ranger Sport.
02:59 It is a V6, so it's about $5,000 cheaper than this.
03:04 It has a turbocharged diesel V6, 600 newton metres of torque, so slightly more torque
03:09 than this.
03:10 Same story again, we're going to slot that into two-wheel drive, high range, and we're
03:12 going to go for a run down to the end there and see what happens.
03:15 I think this will be close because based on previous testing I've done in that, it's been
03:19 a little bit laggy, that V6 diesel, so I'll be interested to see how it goes up against
03:23 this.
03:24 I've left this with stability control and traction control off so we can get a good
03:26 start and we'll see if we can catch James napping.

05:27 And this is the one that I think is really going to be neck and neck.
05:30 So that is the Ranger Wildtrak.
05:31 That, again, is also about five grand cheaper than this is.
05:34 But it's kind of the rival when it comes to engines,
05:37 because that's 500 newton meters.
05:39 This is 550, so it'll be really close in terms of how they compare.
05:43 So let's give this a crack and see exactly what happens.

06:46 It's also worth pointing out at this point
06:48 that the Wildtrak is about 60 kilos heavier than this in terms of curb weight.
06:53 James is slightly lighter than I am.
06:56 So it's a little bit closer, but, yeah, that is ever so slightly heavier.

07:46 despite that being slightly heavier.

07:50 Yeah, unfortunately, I would have loved to actually get
07:53 just like an XLT or something, just that's slightly lighter,
07:57 so that they are the same weight to really compare them.
07:59 But this is all we could get our hands on, unfortunately.
08:02 But, yeah, look, I guess it does show you that, you know,
08:05 their Halo model is only really as good as one of the entry-level diesel engines.
08:11 It's not as good as the V6 or the Raptor by any stretch.
08:14 So, yeah, look, I think that hopefully Toyota is brewing something interesting
08:18 in the background because, yeah, this has a significant amount of work
08:22 that needs to be done to it for it to actually compete with the V6 diesel and the Raptor.
08:26 Certainly at the price points as well, like this being so expensive,
08:30 it just doesn't have anything on them in terms of straight-line performance.
08:33 So hopefully Toyota can do something about that to actually give us the oomph that we need.
08:37 These are the actual performance figures that we got when we stuck them up against
08:40 our GPS data unit as well, so you can get an idea of how quick they are across the quarter mile.
08:45 So, yeah, good times.
08:47 Righto, so there you go.
08:48 Barely surprising. High lux, slower than Raptor and V6 diesel.
08:53 I think what that tells us is this desperately needs a bigger engine if they want it to be this
08:59 hardcore Halo, especially if they want it to compete with the Ranger.
09:02 So hopefully, Toyota, if you are listening to this, get a petrol V6,
09:06 whack it under the bonnet of this, and we should be good to go.
09:10 Because really, the rest of the vehicle is actually pretty good.
