Welcome to the world's BIGGEST 4WD SUV drag race! We get EVERY 4WD SUV we can get our hands on to see which is quickest across the drag strip. We also let Chat GPT figure out the groupings. Join Paul Maric to see which is quickest!

Our criteria for this test was the availability of 7 seats, along with low-range. The only vehicles of the 15 that meet this criteria we couldn't get were the LDV D90 (they didn't want to participate), the new Range Rover (was unavailable) and the Land Rover Discovery Sport (also unavailable).

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. Welcome to one of Australia's most comprehensive
00:03 four-wheel drive SUV tests.
00:05 We're going to be doing towing testing, off-road testing,
00:08 and today is all about figuring out which of these four-wheel drive SUVs
00:12 is Australia's quickest in a drag race.
00:15 Now, if you haven't done so already, make sure you subscribe to our channel
00:17 and press the bell icon so you can find out when all of those videos go live.
00:21 But let's get started with some drag racing.
00:23 OK, it is time to go drag racing, and of course, it has rained.
00:28 It seems every single time we do a drag race, it rains.
00:30 So hopefully that won't cause too many issues.
00:33 Just like last time we did this with the dual cab utes,
00:35 we're running this over an eighth of a mile.
00:37 We just don't have enough...
00:39 Well, we have enough room for a quarter mile,
00:40 but it gets very narrow down the end there,
00:42 so we're just going to run an eighth of a mile to be on the safe side.
00:45 What we also did was we used ChatGPT to figure out how our draw should be done.
00:50 We've got 12 cars in total, and we need to do three draws of four cars,
00:54 and then the winners will face off at the end.
00:56 And this is how it all sort of came together.
00:58 The first drag race is going to be the Toyota Land Cruiser,
01:01 so this is the 300 Series Sahara.
01:03 We've got the Ford Everest V6 diesel.
01:06 We've got the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and also the Land Rover Defender.
01:10 Just to remind you of the specifications,
01:13 300 Series Land Cruiser uses a twin-turbo V6 diesel,
01:16 makes 227 kilowatts of power, 700 newton-metres of torque.
01:20 The Ford Everest uses a V6 diesel as well.
01:23 That one pumps out 184 kilowatts of power, 600 newton-metres of torque.
01:27 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, naturally aspirated petrol V6,
01:31 that makes 210 kilowatts of power, 344 newton-metres of torque.
01:35 And finally, the Land Rover Defender 110,
01:38 that uses a three-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo diesel,
01:41 that pumps out 220 kilowatts of power, 650 newton-metres of torque.
01:45 We're going to run all of these in an all-wheel drive mode if they have it.
01:48 There will be some cars in this test that we can't run in high-range four-wheel drive,
01:52 but these are all going to be run in four-wheel drive
01:55 because they can be run like that on this type of surface.
01:57 I've got the 300 in Sport mode.
02:00 James over there has got the Everest in 4A.
02:03 We've got the Jeep Grand Cherokee L in Sport mode,
02:06 and we've got the Defender in S mode.
02:08 So, I think it's time to get cracking.
02:09 We'll see how this first run goes, and we'll see what happens.
02:12 Oh, by the way, cars that are missing.
02:13 So, LDV D90, it's not here.
02:15 They didn't want to be part of this test, so it's not here.
02:18 And then we're missing some Land Rovers as well.
02:20 So, the new Range Rover, available in seven seats, off-road capable.
02:24 Same story with the Discovery, wasn't available.
02:26 So, they are the vehicles that are missing,
02:28 but we have everything else in this segment.
02:30 So, let's get our first round going.
02:32 All right, Sean, we are ready for our countdown.
02:35 Let's go on go.
02:36 OK, in three, two, one, go.
02:41 Go.
02:45 Oh, that was a good start for me.
02:47 Oh, the Defender.
02:49 Oh, this is close.
02:52 Go, go, come on.
02:54 Go.
03:00 Oh, that was close.
03:04 Oh, that was close.
03:10 OK, I reckon that is a photo finish.
03:12 We'll have to go to our video judges there to figure out who won.
03:15 We may even need a second run at that, just to be on the safe side.
03:18 How did that go?
03:19 Oh, by a bonnet.
03:21 By the bonnet.
03:23 I think just to be on the safe side,
03:27 because I think Scott may have jumped the start.
03:29 We should do that once more.
03:30 Pull out a shit start. We're going again.
03:32 Pull out a shit start.
03:33 All right, just because I am a tiny bit competitive,
03:36 we're going to do that again.
03:38 I'm going to actually switch off the air conditioning here,
03:40 just to give us a bit of an air start.
03:42 So, here we go.
03:43 All right, Sean, we're ready for our countdown.
03:45 And in three, two, one, go.
03:49 Go.
03:54 Oh, OK, come on. Go, go, go, go, go, go.
03:57 Oh, the Everest. Hello.
03:58 What is going on here?
04:00 No, no, no!
04:06 Oh, no.
04:15 OK, so results are in.
04:17 It turns out the Defender won again just.
04:20 And then it was a very close second to me.
04:23 Very close third then to the Everest.
04:25 James had a really good start there.
04:26 And then Cherokee L was dead last.
04:28 But that was definitely good fun.
04:31 OK, round two of our drag racing adventure.
04:35 So, we have the Lexus LX600 that I'm in now.
04:38 This uses a twin turbocharged V6 petrol engine.
04:42 305 kilowatts of power, 650 newton meters of torque.
04:47 This is the luxury one as well.
04:49 So, it's got the fancy seats in the back.
04:50 So, I think this is actually pretty heavy.
04:52 So, I'll be interested to see how it goes.
04:53 Next to me, we've got the trusty Land Cruiser Prado.
04:56 That's the Kakadu, the top spec.
04:58 That uses a four-cylinder turbocharged diesel
05:00 making 500 newton meters of torque.
05:02 We have the Fortuna next to that.
05:04 That one has the same engine as the Prado,
05:06 500 newton meters of torque.
05:08 And then finally, we have the big daddy,
05:10 the Nissan Patrol, 5.6 liter naturally aspirated V8.
05:14 That makes 560 newton meters of torque.
05:17 So, this is a full-time four-wheel drive.
05:19 The Prado's full-time four-wheel drive.
05:21 The Fortuna is two-wheel drive.
05:23 You can use four-wheel drive high range
05:24 on unsealed surfaces, but we won't be using it here
05:28 because this is a sealed surface.
05:29 If you do wanna know why that is,
05:30 click up here to watch our
05:31 four-wheel drive controls explained video.
05:33 And finally, the Patrol is a full-time four-wheel drive
05:36 as well, so that'll just stay in its normal mode.
05:38 This I have in sport mode.
05:39 Fortuna is in power mode, and I think we are good to go.
05:43 So, let's give it a shot.
05:44 - And in three, two, one, go.
05:47 - All right, away we go.
05:55 Oh, walking the Patrol.
05:57 Yeah, baby, all right.
06:00 Oh, there we are.
06:07 (car engine roaring)
06:10 Patrol has been schooled very nicely.
06:14 All right, nicely done.
06:17 So, it looks like I was clear winner there.
06:19 Patrol, then Fortuna, and then Prado.
06:23 Very interesting.
06:24 Okay, time for the final round
06:28 before we get into our elimination.
06:31 Okay, so I am in the Isuzu MU-X,
06:35 which is a three-liter turbo diesel,
06:37 140 kilowatts of power, 450 newton-meters of torque.
06:41 Next to me is the SsangYong Rexton.
06:44 Uses a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel,
06:47 148 kilowatts of power, 441 newton-meters of torque.
06:50 Also worth mentioning,
06:51 that actually has the optional Ironman suspension
06:54 with nitro gas.
06:56 It lifts it by 40 millimeters,
06:57 so it is sitting a little higher than a standard car.
06:59 We'll see if it helps at all.
07:00 Next to that is the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
07:02 So, that is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel,
07:05 133 kilowatts of power, 430 newton-meters of torque.
07:09 Finally, the Ford Everest.
07:11 This one is the four-cylinder, two-liter,
07:13 154 kilowatts of power, 500 newton-meters of torque.
07:16 So, this and the Rexton are in two-wheel drive,
07:18 so that's rear-wheel drive,
07:19 because they only run a four-wheel drive high range.
07:22 The Pajero Sport actually has
07:23 a super select four-wheel drive system,
07:25 so that is in four-wheel drive automatic,
07:27 and the Everest is in four-wheel drive automatic as well.
07:30 There are no sport modes here,
07:32 so we're just gonna pretty much mash the throttle
07:34 and see how we go.
07:35 It's gonna be tricky getting off the line here as well,
07:37 so we'll see what happens.
07:38 Actually, I'll turn traction control, just in case.
07:41 Okay, Sean, ready for a countdown.
07:42 - And in three, two, one, go.
07:45 (engine revving)
07:49 - Ooh, a little quick start there by the Pajero Sport.
07:52 All right, I think I got this.
07:56 The Pajero's moving, but he jumped the start.
08:02 All right, here comes the finish line.
08:04 Oh, yes, got him.
08:06 All right, let me triple check that.
08:10 Adjudicator Igor up the start there.
08:13 Did the Pajero Sport jump the start?
08:15 Because it definitely looked to me like he did.
08:19 - Yeah, the Pajero Sport seems to have jumped the start
08:21 by a full second.
08:23 - All right, back we go.
08:24 We'll start again.
08:26 Okay, so yes, he did jump the line there,
08:28 so we're gonna go again.
08:29 I had a really good start there,
08:30 so hopefully I can replicate that.
08:32 So we'll see how we go.
08:33 Sean, good for a countdown.
08:35 - And in three, two, one, go.
08:39 (engine revving)
08:41 Go.
08:44 (tires screeching)
08:45 - Oh, yes, here we go.
08:47 (laughing)
08:49 All right, results look a little different here.
08:55 (engine revving)
08:57 Oh, that Everest is gaining.
08:59 All right, here we go, finish line, bang.
09:02 Oh, that was close there with Everest and Rexton.
09:05 Okay, it's time for our final drag race
09:13 to see which of these is Australia's fastest
09:16 four-wheel drive SUV.
09:17 Just as a reminder, I'm in the Lexus LX 600.
09:19 This thing is a rocket ship.
09:21 Wongy is in the MU-X,
09:23 and Scott is in the Diesel Defender.
09:26 So why don't we give this a crack.
09:28 Sean, count us in.
09:29 - And in three, two, one, go.
09:33 (tires screeching)
09:37 - All right.
09:38 Oh, baby, yes.
09:40 Oh, this is walking away.
09:46 I think I might have jumped the start there,
09:47 but I don't care.
09:49 Boom, that is a resounding win to the Lexus.
09:52 Nice.
09:54 All right, let me check with the judges,
09:56 just to be on the safe side.
09:58 Igor, can you just confirm
10:00 whether the other guys left later than I did?
10:03 - So it does seem that Paul started slightly earlier
10:06 than the other two cars.
10:07 - All right, we're gonna do that again
10:10 because it looks like I cheated a little bit,
10:12 but that's okay.
10:14 I'll line up.
10:16 There we go there.
10:17 Make sure traction control is off.
10:19 All right, Sean, count us in.
10:21 - In three, two, one, go.
10:25 (tires screeching)
10:28 - Oh, see then I didn't leave on time.
10:31 That's all right.
10:33 I think I still got the Defender here.
10:34 Oh, this is close.
10:41 Come on, baby.
10:42 Yeah.
10:45 I love a bit of that for us.
10:50 Excellent.
10:50 So there you go.
10:52 The Lexus LX is the fastest four-wheel drive SUV
10:57 in Australia.
10:58 It really does haul.
11:00 This thing is sensational.
11:01 It's a twin turbo V6.
11:02 It is an absolute rocket ship.
11:05 So as a reminder, we have a stack of other videos
11:07 coming as well with these four-wheel drive SUVs.
11:09 And if you do wanna see those,
11:10 make sure you like and subscribe.
11:12 And if you did enjoy this video,
11:14 please make sure you share it with your friends,
11:16 hit the like button and...
11:17 (car engine roaring)
11:21 I see what they've done here.
11:23 I think we have one more drag race coming.
11:25 Okay, so...
11:29 The guys rolled out something a little tricky here.
11:32 So it is a Land Rover Defender,
11:33 but it is a special one.
11:36 It is called the P525 V8.
11:39 So it uses a five litre supercharged V8,
11:42 386 kilowatts of power and 625 newt metres of torque.
11:49 (car engine roaring)
11:52 Sounds bloody incredible as well.
11:55 When they blasted past me before,
11:56 I was like, "Holy crap, that's got a good racket."
11:58 So let's see what happens.
12:00 I think I'm gonna get demolished here,
12:01 but only one way to find out.
12:04 Scott, are you ready?
12:05 - Ready and very excited.
12:06 - It's like a Cheshire cat.
12:08 Okay, Sean, count us in.
12:10 - Okay, you're gonna go on go in three, two, one.
12:15 Go.
12:16 (car engine roaring)
12:19 Oh yes, come on, baby.
12:22 Go, go, go.
12:23 Oh, damn it.
12:24 (car engine roaring)
12:27 Oh, he absolutely walked me there.
12:30 (car engine roaring)
12:33 All right, I was about three car lengths behind him.
12:39 There you go.
12:39 All right, well, it's now official.
12:41 The Land Rover Defender
12:43 is Australia's fastest four-wheel drive SUV.
12:48 Just to be clear, four-wheel drive SUV
12:50 for this particular test
12:51 was vehicle with low range transfer case,
12:54 also a vehicle capable of four-wheel driving
12:56 with seven seats as well,
12:58 which is all of the cars that we had here,
13:00 minus the ones that are missing.
13:02 So congratulations to Land Rover for that.
13:04 If you did enjoy this video,
13:05 please make sure you like it
13:06 and you share it with your mates.
13:08 And if you haven't done so already,
13:08 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon,
13:11 and don't forget to check out the rest
13:12 of the content we produce with these SUVs as well.
13:14 But until next time, take it easy.
