Here's the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado! It launches with a fresh look, plus centre and rear diff locks, along with a sway bar disconnect. But, there's not V6 diesel...or V6 petrol. It gets the same engine as the HiLux, which is a bit disappointing.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Toyota has just unveiled the all-new Land Cruiser Prado,
00:04 or Land Cruiser as it'll be known in the US.
00:06 Today, I'm going to walk you through the exterior,
00:08 the interior, and the engines that are available,
00:11 along with some of the cool four-wheel driving tech
00:13 they're cramming into this as well.
00:14 Now, if you haven't done so already,
00:15 please subscribe to our channel,
00:16 press the bell icon.
00:18 Let's get started.
00:19 Okay, so let's kick off with the exterior.
00:23 Now, the cool thing is there are two different models
00:26 they've launched with.
00:27 It's called the Land Cruiser
00:28 because it will be sold in the US as a Land Cruiser.
00:31 Now, confusingly, this is the 250 series.
00:34 It is not the same as the 300 series Land Cruiser
00:37 that's sold here in Australia
00:39 and in other places around the world.
00:40 That version will not be sold in the States.
00:42 So this is a smaller version.
00:44 It sits on the same wheelbase, the same platform,
00:48 but it is slightly shorter
00:49 in terms of the front and rear overhangs.
00:51 And it has slightly different technology
00:53 and drivetrains as well.
00:54 But let's start on the outside.
00:56 They've launched two different variants,
00:57 and this is the first one here.
00:59 It kind of looks quite similar
01:01 to the Lexus GX they announced recently.
01:04 And I think this looks sensational.
01:06 I've just got to say that they have done such a good job here
01:09 with the styling.
01:10 So this particular version gets those square-looking
01:13 headlights down the front there.
01:15 You'll also notice big Toyota lettering
01:17 on the grille there as well,
01:18 and then fog lights hidden down the bottom there too.
01:21 I like these stylized elements as well
01:23 that they've gone for on those front edges
01:26 and also the lower section down the front here.
01:28 I think they've really put a lot of effort
01:30 into making sure that this looks nice and rugged
01:32 without being over the top.
01:33 This particular spec looks like it's sitting
01:35 on a decent set of all-terrain tyres,
01:37 big wheel arch guards there as well,
01:39 so that everyone knows that you're driving
01:42 an off-road vehicle.
01:43 And then I mentioned in our Lexus GX video as well
01:46 that these look very familiar,
01:47 and they look kind of similar to what we've seen
01:49 on the Tank 300, the GWM,
01:51 and also on the Jeep Gladiator as well,
01:54 that little design there with an indicator
01:56 built into the side there as well.
01:57 I think the design here really just takes this
02:00 completely away from what the current generation
02:03 Prado looks like.
02:04 It's very boxy, very squared off,
02:06 and I think it looks absolutely sensational
02:07 there from the front end.
02:09 There is a different design, though,
02:10 available for the front,
02:12 and I call this the Defender design
02:14 because they've kind of copied the Land Rover Defender
02:17 there with the lights,
02:18 so there's circular LED lights up the front there.
02:21 There's kind of a sandy taupe colour,
02:22 similar to what we've seen on the 70 Series,
02:24 and they've actually just updated that as well,
02:27 and if you wanna see our video on that,
02:28 click up here to watch that.
02:29 But circular headlights up the front there,
02:31 but same setup there in terms of Toyota lettering,
02:34 wheel arch guards, all-terrain tyres, fog lights,
02:37 and then an air dam here for cooling as well
02:40 for the engines, which I'll run you through shortly,
02:42 and same setup there for the wing mirrors.
02:44 I quite like as well what they've done with the roof there,
02:47 how it's a different colour.
02:48 You'll notice there, body colour is sandy taupe,
02:50 and then the roof is like a lighter colour as well.
02:53 I like this rising belt line as we get to the back too.
02:56 It really does look quite nice.
02:58 Side steps look a little different here too.
02:59 They seem to have like a metallic finish on them,
03:01 which I think is pretty cool setup,
03:03 and kind of differentiates this
03:04 from other vehicles on the road.
03:05 I think from a design standpoint, this looks really nice.
03:09 So let's have a look at the back of these,
03:11 where there's also been a pretty big improvement,
03:14 I reckon, on the design.
03:16 So you can see there, LED tail lights,
03:18 you've got Land Cruiser there,
03:20 and then Toyota over here.
03:21 The interesting thing as well,
03:23 they've put a brake light up the top there,
03:25 shark fin aerial there too.
03:27 The interesting thing is,
03:28 we don't have that swing open tailgate.
03:30 So that seems to be gone.
03:31 It's now just a regular tailgate.
03:33 We might have a version similar
03:34 to what they've done in Australia,
03:35 where they've put the spare tyre under the vehicle
03:38 to delete the long range tank.
03:39 Alternatively, we might actually see a version
03:41 of this launch with the tyre on the back
03:43 and a swing open tailgate.
03:44 We don't know yet.
03:45 The details are pretty scarce there
03:46 in terms of the specs and what they're going to be offering.
03:49 But I think this is a really cool looking design
03:52 and they've really hit it out of the park there
03:53 in terms of giving this a lot of road presence.
03:56 So that's that circular headlight defender style design.
03:59 And this is what the other one looks like from the rear.
04:01 Again, similar design set up.
04:03 And from a distance,
04:03 it kind of looks like the Land Cruiser 300 series as well,
04:07 but it has its own sort of unique characteristics there too.
04:10 So really cool looking set up
04:11 and I'm very much looking forward to seeing this in person
04:14 to see if it has that same effect.
04:16 Let's jump inside the cabin now.
04:18 So again, big step forward here in terms of design.
04:22 If you cast your mind back
04:23 to the current generation Land Cruiser Prado,
04:25 it is feeling old.
04:27 And even down to the wood grain,
04:29 it's like wood grain that you would expect to see
04:30 in a 90s Commodore or something.
04:32 It really just feels ancient.
04:34 This looks significantly better.
04:36 So two big displays there.
04:37 I think these are 12.3 inch displays.
04:39 One there for the infotainment cluster,
04:41 one ahead of the driver as well
04:43 that I'll give you a bit more detail on in just a second.
04:45 But outside of that,
04:47 it just looks a big step forward
04:48 in terms of quality of materials.
04:50 So it looks like soft touch materials there
04:52 and along the door as well.
04:53 There's even a padded section here and here
04:55 to rest your feet on while you're driving
04:57 or while you're a passenger in the vehicle.
04:58 So that all looks really nice.
05:00 JBL sound system, by the look of it as well,
05:02 I can see those tweeters off to the side there
05:04 that we see in Hilux and other Toyota models as well.
05:07 So I like that.
05:09 If we come in a little bit closer though,
05:11 let me show you what else I've seen here on the interior.
05:14 So second row, you can see here,
05:16 they've gone down the path of the third zone
05:17 of climate control.
05:18 Heating and cooling there for the second row as well,
05:20 which is great.
05:21 And if we zoom in a little bit closer there,
05:23 I can see USB-C.
05:25 So big change there from the current USB-A/USB-C setup.
05:29 You can also see a HDMI port there as well,
05:31 which they seem to persist with.
05:32 I don't know anyone that has devices that have HDMI,
05:35 but it's there anyway.
05:36 Idle up switch there for the diesel version of this
05:40 and then a button there for the 360 camera.
05:43 More interestingly though, is some of this stuff.
05:45 So multi-terrain select and crawl control,
05:47 which prior to this was only available
05:49 in top spec of Land Cruiser Prado.
05:52 Seems to be that they're going to be rolling that out
05:54 to more vehicles across the range.
05:55 It is all just electronics,
05:56 so it's good to see that they're actually
05:58 thinking about that.
05:59 You have heated and cooled seats up the front here
06:02 and then have a look down here.
06:03 So I'll go into a bit more detail on this
06:06 when we talk about engines,
06:07 but centre diff lock, rear diff lock, sway bar disconnect.
06:10 So this is something we haven't seen previously
06:13 in Land Cruiser Prado.
06:15 And then they also have full-time four-wheel drive,
06:18 which is similar to the current generation of Prado as well
06:22 and differentiates this from Fortuna 2,
06:25 which is good to see.
06:27 High quality switch gear there as well.
06:28 So unlike what some brands are doing,
06:31 which is burying all of these controls in menus,
06:33 they've actually stuck that all out here
06:35 so that you do have physical buttons for everything.
06:37 Here you can also see a heated steering wheel as well.
06:40 So again, going for that premium feel.
06:42 Dual zone climate control there as well,
06:44 which is good to see.
06:46 This is what the steering wheel looks like a little closer.
06:48 So you can see there you've got a lane tracing assist
06:51 because this has moved to an EPAS system.
06:53 So electrically assisted steering rack
06:55 and the lane trace assist basically
06:57 keeps it within its lane.
06:59 Big digital display there ahead of the driver.
07:01 Big step forward in terms of what's currently on offer
07:04 in Land Cruiser Prado, which is good to see.
07:07 Voice recognition switch down there,
07:09 volume controls and then cruise controls over here.
07:12 All of that switch gear has changed,
07:14 which is great.
07:15 It all looks nice and modern.
07:16 And again, a bit more premium,
07:17 which seems to be the theme here with this vehicle.
07:22 This is your seating configuration.
07:24 So again, they've stuck with seven seats,
07:27 which is good and stadium seating setup,
07:29 which means that's your level there.
07:30 You get into the second row,
07:32 level jumps up a bit and then third row,
07:34 it sits a little bit higher.
07:34 So it just means that if you are sitting there,
07:36 you have better vision out of the cabin.
07:38 You can see here as well,
07:39 this is a roll and tumble style setup.
07:42 It isn't a movable second row.
07:44 That was one of the biggest downsides to 300 series
07:46 because you don't really have a great deal of leg room
07:48 in the third row and you can't exactly move
07:51 your second row forward to give third row occupants
07:53 more room.
07:54 So a little bit disappointing they haven't gone down
07:56 the path of putting the second row on tracks
07:58 to give you that space.
07:59 But I guess that's sort of, it is what it is.
08:01 I am curious to know what this switch down here is,
08:04 though I noticed it earlier.
08:05 It seems to say AC 100 watts.
08:08 So in this car somewhere,
08:10 there must be an outlet that allows you to plug a device in,
08:13 but it is interesting to actually have an on and off switch
08:15 here.
08:16 So I guess it means if you do have kids in the second row,
08:17 they're not going to go sticking anything in there.
08:19 And if they do, it won't actually be powered,
08:21 which is good news.
08:22 Now let's talk about engine.
08:24 It is a little bit disappointing if I'm honest.
08:25 So if we talk about the platform,
08:27 increased rigidity, 50% increase in the frame rigidity
08:30 and a 30% increase in overall rigidity,
08:33 it means off road,
08:34 it's going to feel a lot more, I guess,
08:36 better put together, less flexing, that kind of thing.
08:39 The suspension has changed as well.
08:41 So they're talking about better wheel articulation here
08:43 and improved off-road performance
08:45 through the use of the EPAS,
08:46 so the electrically assisted steering rack,
08:48 stabiliser disconnect mechanism,
08:50 SDM is what they're calling it.
08:51 So it's the first time it's been used in a Toyota vehicle,
08:54 but we have seen this before in vehicles like the Gladiator
08:56 and the Wrangler.
08:57 It allows the vehicle to disconnect the sway bar
08:59 to give you better off-road performance.
09:01 I think this is replacing KDSS
09:03 because that's what that system effectively does.
09:05 And it looks like they've gone down the path
09:06 of using this instead.
09:08 And then you also have the multi-terrain
09:09 select mode systems there as well.
09:11 Now in terms of the engine,
09:12 so globally, this is going to be available
09:14 with a turbocharged four cylinder petrol hybrid
09:17 and all the way through to an engine here
09:20 that you wouldn't wish upon anyone.
09:22 It's a 2.7 litre petrol engine,
09:25 naturally aspirated, 120 kilowatts of power,
09:27 246 newton metres of torque.
09:30 Now that's for Eastern Europe,
09:32 so they can keep that one.
09:34 But for Australia, what we're going to be getting
09:36 is the engine out of the updated Hilux,
09:38 which is a 2.8 litre turbocharged four cylinder diesel
09:41 with a 48 volt, very, very mild hybrid system,
09:44 150 kilowatts of power, 500 newton metres of torque.
09:47 There is no mention here at all of a V6 or a petrol option,
09:51 which is incredibly disappointing
09:52 because they really do want to compete with things
09:55 like Everest that have a V6 diesel available.
09:57 I just don't know why they haven't gone down the path
09:59 of fitting that.
10:00 It'll obviously compete with things like the Land Cruiser,
10:02 which is available with a V6 diesel,
10:03 but I guess that is just one thing
10:05 they've got to think about.
10:06 This engine does sound appealing though.
10:07 One that's limited to North America and China.
10:10 So it's the engine out of the Lexus hybrid
10:13 that we tested recently,
10:14 which is a turbocharged 2.4 litre four cylinder,
10:19 243 kilowatts of power, 630 newton metres of torque.
10:23 Sounds really exciting to me,
10:24 but unfortunately it's not going to make it to Australia.
10:26 This goes on sale in Japan first, early next year,
10:30 and it will be joined by an updated 70 series
10:32 that is coming to Australia as well.
10:34 And like I said, we actually shot a video on that.
10:36 There is a link to that in the description below.
10:38 So let me know what you reckon
10:39 about the new Land Cruiser Prado.
10:41 This is all the information we have at this very early stage,
10:43 but the new 250 series looks bloody awesome on paper.
10:47 I am keen to see what it feels like to drive.
10:49 The engine sounds a little bit underwhelming.
10:50 I was hoping for a V6 diesel, but we'll see how that goes.
10:54 Let me know what you reckon in the comment section below.
10:56 Are you excited for this?
10:57 Are you going to place an order?
10:58 How expensive do you reckon it's going to be?
10:59 Because the current one caps out at about 90, $95,000.
11:03 I reckon it's going to be well over a hundred grand.
11:05 So let me know what you reckon
11:07 in the comment section below.
11:08 If you did enjoy this video,
11:09 please make sure you like it
11:10 and you share it with your mates.

11:15 But until next time, take it easy.
