00:00 -Coach, I asked Waldo and Jamie on this too, but it seems like Waldo, Latre, John,
00:06 coming off the bench, it seems like they've had such a big impact.
00:08 This season, just the consistency they've brought.
00:10 What have you seen from those three guys specifically,
00:12 the way they've been able to impact everybody's performance?
00:16 -A selfless mentality.
00:20 Of course, they want to start.
00:23 There's no shortage of us letting them know how valuable they are.
00:28 We have eight starters.
00:30 That's how I perceive them.
00:33 They've just accepted it, and they're thriving in knowing
00:39 that they're going to get their minutes, and they're playing a valuable role.
00:44 I think that's -- When you define our rotation, our rotation's defined.
00:49 We're in an eight-man rotation right now.
00:51 They know they're going to get in.
00:53 They know they're --
00:54 We talk about getting your mind in the game before your body,
00:58 and as they don't start the game, their mind's getting in the games
01:02 before their body, and they get in there, and they get ready.
01:05 They've all had -- Those three have had huge impacts coming into the game.
01:10 It's what's making us better.
01:13 It's what's making us good right now is that we're deeper,
01:16 and those guys are selfless.
01:19 It's not about them.
01:22 They can sit there and pout because they're not starting,
01:24 but they realize, "Man, I'm still going to get 20-some minutes,
01:27 and I got to produce," and they are.
01:30 -In your time here, it seems like you guys haven't had any issues ever
01:33 with, like, overlooking opponents or anything like that.
01:35 What goes into getting the guys to be bought in and paying attention
01:39 of who's in front of them as opposed to maybe trying to look ahead
01:41 to Wednesday or stuff like that?
01:43 -I think they'll tell you that it starts with our coaching staff.
01:46 I don't prepare any different for Kansas than I do Texas State.
01:54 I mean, it's a thorough preparation.
01:57 It's a confident respect.
01:58 We use that term, a confident respect for every single opponent.
02:03 You respect their strengths.
02:05 You respect what they do that could beat you.
02:07 You got to know what can they do to beat you,
02:10 and you got to eliminate those things.
02:11 And we prepare the same way.
02:14 I think the guys will tell you my demand on the scouting,
02:17 my demand on the preparation is literally no different from every opponent.
02:20 And these guys believe that the game in front of us is our marquee game.
02:25 That game, the next game is our marquee game.
02:29 -Going off that, do you point to, like, the, you know,
02:32 Creighton losing to UNLV the other night?
02:34 Like, hey, don't get your eyes wide, like,
02:36 because anything can happen on any given night.
02:38 -I'll tell you, I have before in my coaching career,
02:42 but I don't -- I almost, like,
02:44 don't want to have a self-fulfilling prophecy.
02:46 You know, hey, did you see what happened with this team right there?
02:49 It's like, I don't want to -- I'm just feeding them positives.
02:53 Like, this is what we're going to do to win this game.
02:55 I'm just kind of -- and it's that confident respect.
02:58 This is what Green Bay can do to beat you.
03:01 They have a tremendous plug defense.
03:04 If you go too far with your dribble, you're going to get turnovers.
03:06 They do a lot of really good go screening.
03:09 I mean, they try to confuse you.
03:10 You're going to see more of what we call go screens,
03:13 where they come into the screen and they slip them.
03:15 We're going to see more of those than we see in any one game all year.
03:17 Your communication's got to be great.
03:20 So they can hurt you if you're not --
03:23 so we really talk like that instead of a self-fulfilling prophecy
03:26 of kind of trying to put this negative in their head that, you know, it can get beat.
03:31 I think they know how we prepare.
03:33 - Weird, like, the 8 p.m. tip, not super normal for, like, non-conference play,
03:40 the 8 p.m. tip, but it's something that you get into a ton with Big 12 play,
03:44 especially stack and the midweek stuff.
03:46 I know it's graduation stuff, but in a weird way,
03:48 is it helpful just to get one of those out of the way, just to be like, hey,
03:52 the 8 p.m. tips don't really happen on a Saturday.
03:55 I think that's just -- some places like Saturday,
03:58 I think they're going to draw more on a Saturday night.
04:02 College towns, I don't know.
04:03 Well, sometimes college kids don't go out till late anyway,
04:05 so that's what I'm hoping, but I know it's finals week, but I don't know.
04:09 Just we're going to get late starts.
04:11 I don't really look at it.
04:13 I haven't really put much thought to it that it's going to help us in the future.
04:16 We just -- we've just been focused on, like, what we got to do.
04:20 I just -- I really haven't put much thought to that.
04:22 >> No, they changed the rule this year, being able to add a couple more coaches,
04:26 but Clayton and Paul really added.
04:29 >> So for us, it's been such a great rule because, you know, Paul and Clay,
04:38 they're such -- they're youthful.
04:41 They're great at skill development.
04:42 That skill development spot, like the player development, was a facade.
04:48 I mean, you could have a player development coach,
04:49 but he couldn't work with the players.
04:50 Like, that is the biggest joke of a title.
04:53 And now, once we were able to change that rule, I went right after a guy,
04:57 Paul, five years, player development in the NBA.
05:00 That resonates with guys.
05:02 That resonates with recruits.
05:04 And he does an outstanding job working with them.
05:06 And, you know, Clay, Brock, Hump, Gates,
05:09 it gives you more guys that can work with guys.
05:12 It's only -- it's one of the few rules that made that just absolutely benefits.
05:16 It's a no-brainer to get more guys that can help and coach.
05:22 I love the attention to detail coaching.
05:23 It just gives us more voices that can coach the details.
