00:00 Once upon a Christmas in Moscow, Russia, there lived a little boy named Kolya. He always loved the Christmas season. It was the time of year when people were happy and trees were decorated with many beautiful ornaments.
00:15 This year was different for Kolya. As he looked at all the pretty decorations on the Christmas tree, he thought of his father who worked as a weatherman in faraway Antarctica.
00:24 Kolya knew that in the land at the bottom of the world, there were no trees to decorate, nothing but ice and snow.
00:30 If only there was some way Daddy could have a Christmas tree.
00:34 Why, Christmas just isn't Christmas without a tree and all the ornaments. Yes, if only there was a way Kolya could be sure his daddy would have a tree for Christmas.
00:44 Hmm, if only there was a way, if only.
00:50 (train whistle)
01:01 (door slams)
01:02 (upbeat music)
01:07 (train whistle)
01:09 Hey, taxi!
01:12 Hop in.
01:14 Thank you.
01:16 Where to?
01:18 Antarctica, please.
01:21 Where? Why, that's at the South Pole, isn't it?
01:26 I want to take my father this tree.
01:29 I wish I could help you. I don't have enough gas. Say, look, there's someone who can help. That's Santa Claus.
01:36 Kolya looked up into the clear night sky and saw Santa Claus zooming about in his star-studded jet plane. It streaked across the sky, brighter than any comet.
01:48 Then it swooped to the ground and slid to a stop.
01:53 Santa, Santa Claus, hello, hello!
01:56 Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas, Kolya. Now, what would you like this year, a mechanical toy or how about a big television set, hmm?
02:04 Oh, Santa, my daddy...
02:07 I know you'd like to take him that Christmas tree. Well, you take my plane.
02:12 But you must reach your daddy in Antarctica before the clock strikes twelve or else.
02:18 Now, when the clock strikes the first chime, climb aboard the star shooter and take off. Stop for nothing. That's a mighty long trip. It could be hard to do.
02:27 Just keep going for with the last chime at twelve, the Christmas magic will stop.
02:32 Oh, I understand, Santa, but what do I...
02:35 Now, now, Kolya, just hang on to your tree, don't hit the big dipper, keep going south and remember you must be there before the twelfth chime.
02:44 Oh, I see, uh-huh.
02:47 Goodbye now.
02:49 Is that the first chime?
02:51 Yes, there's no time to lose.
02:53 All right, I'll do as you say. Thank you, Santa. Bye. I'm off to Antarctica.
02:59 Let's go, driver. I've got more work to do.
03:04 Off Kolya went into space with the magic of Santa's star shooter.
03:08 He clutched his decorated tree, his heart pounding with anxiety, very determined to reach Antarctica before the last chime.
03:16 [music]
03:32 The second chime and Kolya was approaching Italy.
03:35 I can hardly believe it. It's beautiful.
03:38 [music]
03:42 The sky lit up with magnificent fireworks in celebration of the yuletide season.
03:47 There was so much to see and then Kolya grew very warm.
03:51 Phew, we must be going over Africa.
03:54 Oh, it's a long way down.
03:57 And as Kolya looked below, a horrifying sight caught his eyes.
04:01 A sandstorm swirled angrily from the ground.
04:04 The fierce wind whipped round and round.
04:08 [wind blowing]
04:11 Higher and higher went the wind.
04:14 [wind blowing]
04:19 And as the third chime sounded, the violent wind surrounded the star-studded ship.
04:24 [wind blowing]
04:27 And crumbled it like stardust.
04:30 [wind blowing]
04:33 Kolya clung to his Christmas tree with all his might.
04:37 [wind blowing]
04:40 [snoring]
04:46 [snoring]
04:52 [snoring]
04:59 [snoring]
05:02 The fourth chime. What can I do? I've got to get there. I must.
05:07 [snoring]
05:10 Stop, I say.
05:13 Oh, please don't eat me, Mr. Lion. I don't taste good.
05:18 I wouldn't eat a little boy. I have children of my own.
05:22 I just want to know where you got your pretty Christmas tree.
05:26 Oh, from my home in Russia, that's where.
05:30 I've been running all over Africa looking for one. What a waste of time.
05:35 Oh, I'd give you this one, but I can't because I want to take it to my daddy in Antarctica.
05:40 It's for Christmas.
05:43 [gasps] And the fifth chime. Oh, no.
05:47 Oh, quick. Which way is the South Pole?
05:50 Hmm, let me see. Bless my stars, I do remember.
05:54 It's that way. Go straight, then turn right.
05:57 Oh, thanks, but I don't think I can go fast enough.
06:00 You go fast. I'm in such a hurry. Could you?
06:03 Give you a ride? Why, sure, sonny.
06:07 Hold on tight.
06:10 [gasps] It's the sixth. Please hurry.
06:15 [snoring]
06:18 [snoring]
06:21 [snoring]
06:24 Whoa! I don't do well in water.
06:28 Boys, stop monkeying around and build a raft for this lad.
06:31 He's got to reach Antarctica immediately.
06:34 [monkey chattering]
06:37 That's service, lad. The raft ought to float through to Antarctica.
06:42 Wonderful. Thanks, everyone.
06:46 Still clutching his tree as the seventh chime sounded,
06:49 Kolya stood bravely on his raft.
06:52 A huge wave swelled his raft fell apart,
06:54 then his feet touched something strange.
06:57 Now, how in the salty seas did such a little boy get way out here?
07:03 Oh, I'm on my way to Antarctica. Can you hear me?
07:09 Oh, Mr. Whale, could you help me get to Antarctica, Mr. Whale? Oh.
07:15 [waves crashing]
07:19 [mumbling]
07:23 It's the eighth. I've got to hurry. Please.
07:26 No, no, no, no. No blubbering.
07:28 Leave that to the whale, and I'll give you a whale of a ride.
07:33 The whale proudly shot through the rough waters,
07:36 faster than any ship could sail, to the very shores of Antarctica.
07:43 Oh, thanks.
07:45 Once ashore, Kolya trudged onward,
07:48 even though a snowstorm almost broke his last hope.
07:51 My dad's not afraid of snowstorms, so I won't be either.
07:58 Goodness, there's the ninth. Oops.
08:02 Oh, frozen icebergs, what kind of a bird or dirt are you?
08:08 I'm no bird. I'm a boy, and I'm looking for my father.
08:12 A boy? Oh, my goodness. I'm a penguin, so you're a human boy.
08:16 That's very interesting.
08:18 The dance joint? Oh, please. Where's the weather station?
08:22 The what? The weather station? Oh, I'm glad you're a boy. I'm a penguin.
08:26 Are you sure? Oh, you're the son of the weatherman at the camp.
08:29 I thought you were. Yes, you look like him, just like him.
08:31 I look like my family, too. See, don't we all look alike?
08:34 We always have looked alike. Never saw anything before like it.
08:37 We always look alike. Yes, we do.
08:40 Please, my daddy, you don't understand.
08:43 I do, I do, I do. Want me to sing for you?
08:47 That's the eleventh chime. We'll have to hurry or I'll be late.
08:54 We'll help you then. Come on, everybody.
08:57 Oops.
09:09 Hey, you lost something.
09:11 Oh, we're too late.
09:15 Oh, there it is. Too late.
09:19 Colia was frozen with disappointment. He couldn't go any further.
09:23 Colia?
09:31 Here's a cable for you from Antarctica.
09:38 Oh, Antarctica. Oh, thank you, thank you.
09:42 It's from Daddy. Mother, Mother, a cable from Daddy.
09:46 Oh, Mother, look. Read it.
09:49 Received a big Christmas tree by plane today.
09:53 Merry Christmas. Love, Daddy.
09:56 Oh, Daddy did get his Christmas tree. He did.
10:01 That's fine. Merry Christmas.
10:04 And a happy New Year, too.
