00:02:09 Surely there must be something involving children.
00:02:17 Employee would keep watch while four groups of 20 children take alternating recesses.
00:02:22 A playground supervisor.
00:02:24 Pays $3.10 an hour.
00:02:25 No thanks.
00:02:26 When it comes to babysitters, I'm used to doing the hiring.
00:02:29 How many children do you have?
00:02:31 Just one.
00:02:32 He's staying with my parents in Nebraska until I get settled.
00:02:35 Then I'll need babysitters again.
00:02:37 I'll loan you my list.
00:02:39 I have an eight-year-old daughter who goes through babysitters like Sherman through Georgia.
00:02:43 How do you manage?
00:02:44 Day by day.
00:02:47 How's your typing?
00:02:48 I wish I could say I don't type at all.
00:02:50 Truth is, I used to be pretty fast.
00:02:53 I'm awfully rusty though.
00:02:55 Look, I know you're not going to want to hear this, but my advice is you polish up your office skills
00:03:02 and take temporary assignments until we can find something better for your talents.
00:03:06 Pay for office work is okay and the hours are flexible.
00:03:11 Do you know any place I can hawk a teaching credential for a typewriter?
00:03:15 No, but I'll give you the name of a place where you can rent one.
00:03:19 Now look, you take this home, you practice, and you call us when you're ready.
00:03:24 And all the time you're practicing and during all your assignments,
00:03:27 you keep telling yourself this is temporary,
00:03:30 that you're moving on to something better, you're preparing for bigger things.
00:03:34 [typing]

00:04:01 [chatter]
00:04:22 I don't feel right about being here, Inez.
00:04:26 I should drop the choir altogether.
00:04:29 You need some time of your own.
00:04:32 Don't deny yourself something you've always enjoyed.
00:04:35 You can't spend all your time at the hospital.
00:04:37 [chatter]
00:04:41 Zoe, how nice. You made it.
00:04:44 Well, I didn't have anything else planned.
00:04:46 There's no TV.
00:04:48 Well, have you found a job yet?
00:04:50 I may have to give up on a teaching job, but I'll hit the pavement again tomorrow.
00:04:55 Oh, I'm sorry. Zoe Jensen, meet Muriel Moore.
00:04:59 Muriel, Zoe just moved into the apartment below me, all the way from Omaha.
00:05:03 Oh, how do you do?
00:05:06 Hi.
00:05:08 Are you married or still one of us girls?
00:05:11 No, I'm divorced. I got the papers this week.
00:05:15 Oh, I'm so sorry.
00:05:16 Don't be. I'm beginning to enjoy being on my own again.
00:05:19 Well, I don't know how good the pickings will be here.
00:05:21 You know San Francisco. But there is a new conductor.
00:05:24 I was telling Zoe that this morning.
00:05:26 None of us have seen him yet, but he does have an interesting name.
00:05:29 Really?
00:05:30 Uh-huh. Ephraim Adams.
00:05:33 I won't try to list for you all the landmarks of his career.
00:05:37 Let me just say that he's had a great deal of experience in music of all kinds.
00:05:43 He was supposed to have been retired as of this last year,
00:05:47 but like so many of our senior citizens,
00:05:50 he didn't relish the idea of inactivity and so he has chosen to work with us.
00:05:56 No one is expecting miracles,
00:05:59 but I'm sure we'll have a more enjoyable year ahead for all of us.
00:06:04 And now I would like to introduce you to your new choir master,
00:06:09 Mr. Ephraim Adams.
00:06:11 [applause]
00:06:16 Thank you, Reverend Lowe. Thank you.
00:06:20 Ladies and gentlemen of the choir,
00:06:23 I don't want to take up valuable time tonight with a lengthy speech,
00:06:27 but I do feel an obligation to put our relationship on as frank a basis as possible.
00:06:34 Just as the Reverend Loman was called to his vocation,
00:06:39 I was called to mine, which happens to be music.
00:06:44 I view music not as a recreation,
00:06:49 nor as a competitive sport,
00:06:52 nor as a social activity,
00:06:54 nor even as a religious duty.
00:06:57 Music is a craft.
00:07:00 A craft that takes hard work and perseverance and rewards us accordingly.
00:07:09 Your minister has said that he does not expect miracles.
00:07:14 I do.
00:07:16 I fully intend to make something out of the cacophony I heard last Sunday.
00:07:24 It is conceivable that we may even achieve the status of a choir.
00:07:32 Whether or not we do that in the next few weeks depends upon every one of us.
00:07:40 In addition to the regular Sunday services,
00:07:44 we will give a special Christmas performance,
00:07:48 Handel's Messiah.
00:07:51 I have chosen Handel's Messiah precisely because it is difficult
00:07:57 and worthy of the effort we intend to make.
00:08:02 Those of you who wish to take part in that performance are invited to stay.
00:08:09 For those who are seeking a more relaxing pastime,
00:08:16 I urge you to leave now and make your way to the nearest hot tub.
00:08:25 Although I understand we have some new members,
00:08:30 19 voices will not do justice to Mr. Handel's great work.
00:08:36 We need to build this choir in quality as well as quality.
00:08:40 And now I would like to introduce our new organist,
00:08:45 a former student of mine who knows my peculiarities and has a few of his own,
00:08:52 Mr. Seth Rubin.
00:08:56 [applause]
00:09:01 [piano music]
00:09:04 [singing]
00:09:10 Open your mouth.
00:09:16 Open the sound. Open.
00:09:23 [singing]
00:09:45 Get them out of the throat.
00:09:48 [singing]
00:10:02 [music]
00:10:30 Good morning.
00:10:32 From your boy?
00:10:33 Yes, I guess he made this at school.
00:10:36 He must be awfully sweet.
00:10:37 He is. I'm going to bring him out here as soon as I can afford to.
00:10:41 Did you get to meet everyone last night?
00:10:43 Well, not everyone.
00:10:44 I meant to introduce you to Henry.
00:10:46 Who?
00:10:48 Henry Quist. He's Danish, like you. And a bachelor.
00:10:53 Inez, I am not Muriel Moore.
00:10:59 Now, now, dear. Nobody said you were.
00:11:18 Working temp must be a real drag.
00:11:20 It can be tiresome.
00:11:21 How about an early lunch? Would that pick you up?
00:11:23 I brought a sandwich. Thanks anyway.
00:11:26 See you in an hour.
00:11:33 Robbie, I miss you an awful lot, but I got to talk to Grandma now.
00:11:36 Give yourself a nice big kiss right on the forehead.
00:11:39 But how can I kiss myself on the forehead?
00:11:42 Stand on a chair.
00:11:44 I love you, honey.
00:11:45 I love you too, Mom.
00:11:47 Okay, here's Grandma.
00:11:49 So, how are you? I've been so worried.
00:11:52 Mom, I said I couldn't call too often. It's expensive.
00:11:55 Well, call collect, dear.
00:11:57 Well, I can afford this one.
00:11:58 You mean you found a job? What school?
00:12:01 I'm not teaching. I have a temporary office job.
00:12:03 There are no teaching jobs in this area.
00:12:06 Oh, so.
00:12:07 Mother.
00:12:08 Honey, I just want what's best for you.
00:12:11 It's hard knowing your daughter's alone without a proper job, without a husband, in the street.
00:12:16 Mom, I'll be fine.
00:12:18 Why, right at this very moment, I'm in the company of a rather handsome fellow with a devastating smile.
00:12:23 Oh? What's his name?
00:12:26 I think it's Jack.
00:12:28 You did say your name was Jack, didn't you?
00:12:31 What?
00:12:32 Oh, stop it.
00:12:35 So, what's going on?
00:12:37 Look, Mom, I'm neglecting him. I've got to go now.
00:12:40 Kiss Robbie for me.
00:12:41 I will. Now be careful, though.
00:12:43 Right, Mom. Bye.
00:12:45 Goodbye, dear.
00:12:47 [knocking]
00:12:49 Angela Burns.
00:12:59 You remember, I phoned you on Monday about my experience.
00:13:03 Well, a long time ago, I used to sing with this choir, but it became so, you know, so discouraging.
00:13:09 So I decided to look for something more challenging for me.
00:13:13 I've been doing a lot of work with the civic light opera and concerts here and there with friends and so forth.
00:13:21 But I've heard such wonderful things about your work that I decided to come back and give it another try.
00:13:27 That is very kind of you, and I hope you won't be disappointed.
00:13:32 Well, about to begin, so if you want to hang your coat up and take a seat, I'll be with you in a moment.
00:13:39 [footsteps]
00:13:44 Hartley Wood, reporting for duty.
00:13:47 Dad, you decided to accept my offer, Mr. Wood?
00:13:51 I think we'll just take a chair.
00:13:54 Ah, no thanks. I think the church needs it more than I do.
00:13:59 I wouldn't mind sitting down, though.
00:14:03 Third row, please.
00:14:05 It's me.
00:14:08 [piano]
00:14:10 Oh, we like sheep.
00:14:13 Oh, we like sheep.
00:14:17 Have gone astray.
00:14:21 Oh, we like sheep.
00:14:24 Oh, we like sheep.
00:14:28 Have gone astray.
00:14:32 We have turned.
00:14:36 We have turned.
00:14:41 Everyone to his own way.
00:14:46 Ladies and gentlemen of the chorus, may I caution you against taking this text quite so literally.
00:14:56 We have turned everyone to his own way does not give you license to become a conglomeration of soloists.
00:15:06 And we like sheep have gone astray does not mean that you need to illustrate it by wandering from the key in which we happen to be singing.
00:15:19 And now, before we adjourn, I have an announcement.
00:15:24 The first half of next week's rehearsal will be devoted to auditions for the four solo parts.
00:15:32 Do we have to audition in front of the whole choir?
00:15:36 Last year we could audition privately.
00:15:38 If you wish to perform Handel's Messiah privately in your closet or bathtub, you may audition privately.
00:15:48 Otherwise, your audition is intended to reflect not only how you sing, but how you sing under pressure.
00:15:56 And the pressure in this room, I assure you, will not be as great as in church with 400 people present.
00:16:06 She really has a beautiful voice.
00:16:13 Did you hear her do that last piece?
00:16:15 Can't help it here.
00:16:16 I can hear you only because I sit so close to you, but your voice is really lovely.
00:16:20 You should try out too.
00:16:22 It doesn't hurt.
00:16:23 No, I don't think so.
00:16:25 I was surprised to see you here after all these years.
00:16:31 I love the choir.
00:16:33 Doesn't seem like a long time to me.
00:16:35 Well, I think it's wonderful the way you keep going in spite of everything.
00:16:41 Hi.
00:16:42 Hi.
00:16:55 Muriel.
00:16:56 Doing anything?
00:16:57 Well, I was just painting.
00:16:59 Oh, what a cute apartment.
00:17:01 Oh, only temporary until I can afford something bigger.
00:17:04 Oh, but it has possibilities.
00:17:06 It really does.
00:17:07 I just love to help people decorate places.
00:17:10 Well, I don't want to spend too much money on this place.
00:17:13 Oh, it doesn't have to cost very much.
00:17:14 I go to garage sales and I find just precious things for nothing.
00:17:18 Well, I don't want to get too encumbered.
00:17:20 Tearing down, you know.
00:17:22 Oh, I think that is so wise.
00:17:23 I think we should all do that, don't you?
00:17:25 Yes, we should.
00:17:28 Would you like some coffee?
00:17:31 We don't have time.
00:17:33 We're going to have a girls' night out.
00:17:35 Look, I can't...
00:17:36 No, no, no, please.
00:17:37 This is my treat.
00:17:38 I brought my math money.
00:17:40 I think that man is watching us.
00:17:50 What man?
00:17:52 Over there by the telephone.
00:17:54 I've had it, Muriel.
00:17:56 He's probably just waiting for his date to come up and he's drunk.
00:17:59 I don't know.
00:18:00 He had that look in his eye.
00:18:04 I was just very embarrassed.
00:18:06 And where can I get you tonight?
00:18:08 I'll have Tom Collins, please.
00:18:10 Oh, let's see.
00:18:15 I want something special.
00:18:19 Do you have anything that comes in a pineapple?
00:18:23 Was that okay to bring my drink in here?
00:18:27 Oh, sure. Lots of people do that.
00:18:29 I don't know. I got some funny looks.
00:18:31 But I don't care what anyone says. It's my drink and I'm going to finish it.
00:18:34 Good for you.
00:18:35 You know, if we hurry, we can catch a movie after this.
00:18:39 Oh, Muriel, I'm going to go home and collapse for the night as soon as I've conquered my shrimp salad.
00:18:44 But if you want to go to the movies, please go on without me.
00:18:47 I wouldn't think of it.
00:18:48 This is our night out.
00:18:50 How could I forget?
00:18:55 [Muriel's room]
00:18:57 Nice morning.
00:19:10 Yeah, it is.
00:19:13 Is everything all right, Wendell?
00:19:16 You seemed preoccupied during the service.
00:19:19 I was off key.
00:19:22 No, you are always on key. It drives me crazy.
00:19:25 Can't you goof up once in a while like the rest of us?
00:19:28 No, I can't.
00:19:30 I'm sorry. I don't mean to be rude. It's just...
00:19:36 If you want to be alone, I understand.
00:19:39 Lord, Dan, is it Sunday already?
00:19:51 Yeah, and the Oreos come out to play.
00:19:54 Just keep walking, man.
00:19:55 Ooh, you hear that, man? This dude must be bad.
00:19:58 Bad?
00:19:59 The dude may be bad, but his dress is strictly off the rack.
00:20:04 Have you not seen a choir robe before?
00:20:07 Hey, this dude got the same tailor, but he talk kind of funny.
00:20:11 No, see, he the organ grinder.
00:20:14 This here is the monkey.
00:20:18 Damn.
00:20:20 All right, you guys, count it out.
00:20:27 Come on. Perhaps you better move on.
00:20:32 Move on!
00:20:35 We'll be back, man. We'll be back.
00:20:37 Move it!
00:20:40 [organ music]
00:20:43 [organ music]
00:20:46 [organ music]
00:20:50 [organ music]
00:20:54 [organ music]
00:20:57 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:21:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:21:28 What you doing up?
00:21:31 Studying.
00:21:32 I have exams this week.
00:21:35 What is that you're drinking?
00:21:38 Coffee, granny, just coffee.
00:21:39 Can I make you some breakfast?
00:21:49 Winter, you get yourself back to--
00:21:50 Books.
00:21:51 I take care of the kitchen.
00:21:53 You take care of the kitchen, you
00:21:55 take care of the cleaning, the money making,
00:21:56 all I do is study.
00:21:58 Well, that's the hardest work of all.
00:22:01 So what you carrying on about?
00:22:04 You know, grandma, if I could switch to night school,
00:22:07 get a full time job, we'd have more money,
00:22:09 and we'd both be happier.
00:22:11 Listen, I'll be happy when your schooling's finished
00:22:15 and you get yourself a job that means something.
00:22:18 Now why are you going to make me wait four years for that
00:22:20 when you can do it in two?
00:22:22 Because I want to help you now, grandma.
00:22:24 You're 70 years old.
00:22:26 Cleaning offices all night is hard on you.
00:22:29 Why should you have to work so hard for me, huh?
00:22:31 You're all I got, Wendell.
00:22:38 I'll do as much for you as I want.
00:22:41 [MUSIC - "THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND"]
00:22:43 [MUSIC - "THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND"]
00:23:01 Thank you, Mr. Quist.
00:23:03 May it resume your position.
00:23:05 Thank you.
00:23:10 Any other candidates for bass solo?
00:23:12 Mr. Wood, would you care to solo?
00:23:20 Oh, I gave it up for Lent, Mr. Adams.
00:23:23 I think we are well past Lent for this year.
00:23:27 And I'm well past singing solos.
00:23:30 I'm not past everything, however.
00:23:32 [MUSIC - "THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND"]
00:23:39 [MUSIC - "THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND"]
00:24:03 Thank you, Mrs. Burns.
00:24:04 [MUSIC - "THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND"]
00:24:12 Any other soprano solo candidates?
00:24:14 Mrs. Kim, step over here, please.
00:24:25 Mrs. Kim, you have your selection.
00:24:33 Number 45, sir.
00:24:35 Proceed.
00:24:40 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:24:47 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:25:04 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:25:27 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:25:36 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:25:46 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:25:56 [MUSIC - "I KNEW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVED"]
00:26:09 Oh, Mamie.
00:26:10 It's Maisie, Mrs. Burns.
00:26:11 Oh, sorry.
00:26:12 I just wanted to say how sweet I think your voice is.
00:26:15 Thank you.
00:26:16 I've heard of so few singers among your people.
00:26:19 We do a variety of things.
00:26:22 Well, you keep up the good work.
00:26:24 With training, I think you show real promise.
00:26:26 What's he doing in bed?
00:26:31 He's being disciplined, so.
00:26:33 He came home two hours late yesterday.
00:26:36 Maybe he had a good reason.
00:26:37 The reason is his mother's 1,000 miles away,
00:26:39 and he thinks no one cares what he does.
00:26:42 Are you coming home for Thanksgiving?
00:26:44 I can't afford to.
00:26:45 You know that.
00:26:46 Oh.
00:26:47 Still at the same office?
00:26:49 I wish.
00:26:50 I'm in the third office this week.
00:26:52 Choir makes up for it, though.
00:26:54 We had solo auditions last night.
00:26:56 Oh, did you get one?
00:26:59 I didn't try for one.
00:27:01 You could get a solo in Omaha.
00:27:03 I don't want one, Mother.
00:27:05 And we need teachers, too.
00:27:07 Why, I heard just this last week that the school board
00:27:10 has decided they're--
00:27:11 I'm in San Francisco, and I'm staying.
00:27:13 It's time you accepted that.
00:27:14 Well, I can't accept it.
00:27:16 There you are all by yourself without a decent job,
00:27:18 without a husband, without a job.
00:27:20 Without a decent job, without a husband,
00:27:22 without a proper place to live.
00:27:24 I don't know, so I just don't know.
00:27:26 Are you listening?
00:27:27 [door slams]
00:27:28 [music playing]
00:27:31 [phone ringing]
00:27:40 Couldn't get used to the idea of a Christmas
00:27:46 without snow, either.
00:27:47 We transferred here from East Lansing.
00:27:49 Matt wanted to take on the challenge
00:27:51 of an inner city church.
00:27:52 Do you have any children?
00:27:54 Just one, Terry.
00:27:55 He's 17.
00:27:57 He came today to lend a hand.
00:27:59 He's so helpful.
00:28:00 As soon as Matt mentioned the choir needed more members,
00:28:03 Terry offered to join.
00:28:05 Is he improving at all?
00:28:07 I don't know.
00:28:09 It's so-- so complicated now.
00:28:12 We're praying for you.
00:28:14 I'm praying, too.
00:28:18 [music playing]
00:28:21 Muriel just acquired another piece for her hope chest.
00:28:33 Good heavens.
00:28:34 What was it this time?
00:28:35 A fork, I think.
00:28:38 We just have to get a husband for that woman.
00:28:40 I don't think the church can withstand
00:28:42 her being single much longer.
00:28:44 All right, people, people.
00:28:46 We want to get some pictures of the bride
00:28:48 and my handsome new son-in-law.
00:28:50 Jerome has his new camera.
00:28:52 OK.
00:28:54 Now, let's see.
00:28:55 First of all, I want to get Reverend Lohman
00:28:57 and his lovely family up here with Jackie and Bob.
00:29:00 Oh, Reverend Lohman, please.
00:29:03 Alice, you come over and get here with your cousin.
00:29:06 Now, let's see.
00:29:07 Where's Terry?
00:29:08 Terry.
00:29:09 Oh, Terry, come on.
00:29:12 Come on.
00:29:13 Yeah.
00:29:14 [music playing]
00:29:17 Jackie, crunch in closer to Bob.
00:29:19 You just married him, after all.
00:29:21 [music playing]
00:29:29 Glad you decided to come on the hike.
00:29:36 Jane's got to stick together.
00:29:37 Is it uphill or downhill?
00:29:41 A little of both.
00:29:43 I only go on downhill hikes.
00:29:46 Oh.
00:29:47 Well, then maybe I could, uh--
00:29:49 Terry.
00:29:50 --find--
00:29:51 I was just kidding.
00:29:53 [music playing]
00:29:56 [birds chirping]
00:29:59 [music playing]
00:30:03 [birds chirping]
00:30:06 [birds chirping]
00:30:17 [birds chirping]
00:30:30 [birds chirping]
00:30:33 How'd you find this place, Henry?
00:30:52 Oh, friends.
00:30:53 It started by a German hiking club.
00:30:55 My grandmother was German, the only one
00:30:58 among all those Danes.
00:31:00 And you still don't like the sauerkraut?
00:31:03 Not when I have five miles to climb, uphill.
00:31:07 [music playing]
00:31:10 [applause]
00:31:13 Feel the yellow tea kettle?
00:31:36 Yeah.
00:31:37 The coffee stuff's on the counter next to the stove.
00:31:42 I see it.
00:31:44 How do the feet feel now?
00:31:46 I don't know.
00:31:48 Dead dogs don't talk.
00:31:50 What?
00:31:51 It's an old Nebraska saying.
00:31:54 Dead dogs don't talk.
00:31:56 Oh.
00:31:57 Well, you should have told me about that sooner, you know.
00:32:01 I mean, I always carry the first aid kit in case of blisters.
00:32:05 Oh, here.
00:32:06 All for the sock.
00:32:08 Um, all right.
00:32:10 I can do it.
00:32:11 I'm sorry, so.
00:32:16 I didn't mean--
00:32:18 Wow, these sweat socks sure earned their name today.
00:32:33 Oh, Henry.
00:32:34 Oh.
00:32:41 Henry?
00:32:44 Uh.
00:32:45 This just doesn't seem to be working out too well.
00:32:51 Can I just be alone now, please?
00:32:57 [music]
00:33:16 [singing]
00:33:19 Good.
00:33:28 [singing]
00:33:31 Very good.
00:33:48 [singing]
00:33:51 [singing]
00:33:54 Well, as you know, I am not one who is given to showering praise impetuously or without reason.
00:34:15 Nevertheless, that was a distinct improvement.
00:34:20 We shall return to that part of the score later.
00:34:24 Before we go on to the next section, there are some announcements to be made.
00:34:30 It is never easy to choose one person over another,
00:34:36 especially when the factors of talent and experience can be so vastly different.
00:34:44 Nevertheless, music and life require such choices.
00:34:50 The bass soloist for the Messiah will be Mr. Garner.
00:34:56 The alto solos are the responsibility of Miss McGuire.
00:35:05 Tenor solos will be sung by Mr. Jefferson.
00:35:13 And the soprano solos by Mrs. Kim.
00:35:19 Are there any questions?
00:35:25 Very well. If you will please turn to section 28 in your score,
00:35:33 Mr. Rubin will give us a starting chord.
00:35:36 [piano]
00:35:37 [singing]
00:35:41 [singing]
00:35:45 [singing]
00:36:13 And the sopranos blend.
00:36:16 Mrs. Burns, there is no solo in this section.
00:36:31 There are no solos for anyone.
00:36:34 I'm not sure, Mr. Adams, you'd know a soloist if you heard one.
00:36:38 I know an ego when I hear one.
00:36:42 You have a very impressive voice, Mrs. Burns.
00:36:46 There's no denying that.
00:36:48 But it is what I think of as an operatic voice.
00:36:52 One not easily suited to music sung by a group.
00:36:57 A group of amateurs who can't even sing on key!
00:37:10 Mrs. Burns is right, of course.
00:37:14 You are amateurs.
00:37:18 Unlike certain pseudo-professionals like myself who insist on slave wages.
00:37:27 Your voluntary and steadfast attendance at these rehearsals
00:37:34 fully qualifies you for any definition of the word "amateur."
00:37:41 But what Mrs. Burns and many others are wrong about
00:37:46 is the meaning of the word,
00:37:49 which has to do with motivation, not quality.
00:37:55 You will remember "Amo, Amas, Amat,"
00:38:00 the Latin verb "to love."
00:38:04 The meaning of "amateur" is he or she
00:38:10 who does a thing for the love of it.
00:38:14 There is no higher reason for singing than the love of doing it.
00:38:21 In that respect, you do indeed qualify as amateurs.
00:38:28 And I salute you for it.
00:38:32 Now, shall we get on?
00:38:36 Is this Mr. Adams?
00:38:47 Yep. Taken before the war.
00:38:49 How did you two meet?
00:38:51 Long Charmin strike, 1934.
00:38:54 Which side was he on?
00:38:56 Back in the middle.
00:38:58 He was reporting for a newspaper.
00:39:01 He even saved my life during that strike.
00:39:04 How?
00:39:05 Well, he sort of distracted a goon
00:39:08 who was trying to finish me off with a baseball bat.
00:39:11 And you didn't invite him today?
00:39:13 Oh, I quit inviting him anyplace years ago.
00:39:16 He's a loner. I think he likes it that way.
00:39:20 Watch your step, Mary.
00:39:22 Okay.
00:39:23 Okay. I swear to all of you.
00:39:26 Welcome aboard, Mrs. Curtis.
00:39:31 I'm Hartley Wood, the captain of the frig.
00:39:34 Pleased to meet you, I'm sure.
00:39:36 Here, let me give you a hand.
00:39:37 How you doing, Hartley?
00:39:38 Hello.
00:39:39 There you go.
00:39:40 Is it ready?
00:39:49 If it gets any more ready, it'll fall apart.
00:39:52 Can we eat?
00:39:53 Not until we're all here.
00:39:55 Well, can we let it sit for a bit, then?
00:39:57 Good. Just don't let it get too cool.
00:40:00 Oh, there's still plenty of heat in this old carcass.
00:40:03 No way to talk about yourself, Hartley.
00:40:06 Hey, everybody, Henry's here. Now we can eat, huh?
00:40:10 Hello, Henry. Happy Thanksgiving.
00:40:14 The same to you, Sue. I'm glad you're here.
00:40:19 Okay, everybody, find your places.
00:40:22 I propose we have a little party.
00:40:29 This is turkey.
00:40:31 Two of the most wonderful turkey cookers I've ever met.
00:40:35 [music]
00:40:39 [chatter]
00:40:43 [music]
00:40:46 [chatter]
00:40:49 [music]
00:41:14 [laughter]
00:41:17 Mrs. Curtis, how can we get you to join the choir?
00:41:21 Wendell tells us you have a wonderful voice.
00:41:24 Oh, did that boy say that?
00:41:27 Well, I always did like to sing in church, but I work nights.
00:41:33 Besides, when I grew up, we didn't read the music, you know.
00:41:37 You folks read your music, don't you?
00:41:40 Well, some of them do. Some of us just make a stab at it.
00:41:45 What denomination you belong to, Mr. Wood?
00:41:49 I belong to the Church of Beautiful Women. I am a recent convert.
00:41:55 Now, teach us some songs that we don't have to read.
00:42:02 Well, um, I don't know.
00:42:07 Maybe there's some hymns we both know. Then we can teach them to these heathens.
00:42:12 [music]
00:42:16 [chorus singing]
00:42:19 [chorus singing]
00:42:23 [chorus singing]
00:42:26 [chorus singing]
00:42:51 [chorus singing]
00:42:54 [chorus singing]
00:43:13 [chorus singing]
00:43:17 [chorus singing]
00:43:20 [chorus singing]
00:43:43 [chorus singing]
00:43:46 [chorus singing]
00:44:11 [chorus singing]
00:44:14 Thank you, tenors, for paying attention.
00:44:18 It's a great relief for me to know that I'm waving my arms here,
00:44:22 not simply to ventilate the place.
00:44:25 That is the seventh time we have tried that section.
00:44:31 There's no point in finishing it unless we can get it right.
00:44:36 So I am going back to the beginning, including the solo.
00:44:40 And this time I want to hear your voices, all your voices.
00:44:45 Miss Moore.
00:44:49 What?
00:44:50 Would you please give me the text of measures 43 to 48?
00:44:56 Okay. Um, was that, um, was that before or after the, um,
00:45:03 [singing]
00:45:06 Measures 43 to 48.
00:45:10 Well, um, Mr. Adams, I don't, um, I don't seem to have those numbers on my score.
00:45:17 Why not?
00:45:19 Well, I know you told us to, uh, measure, to number all the measures, but, um, I don't, um,
00:45:25 numbers and music don't seem to go together for me.
00:45:28 Music is fraught with numbers.
00:45:31 Rhythms are numerical relationships, and measures need to be numbered
00:45:37 if we are to have some common reference to find our way through this piece of music.
00:45:43 I suggest that you number your score or find a choir that is less demanding.
00:45:51 Now, Mr. Goodman, would you please read me the text of measures 43 to 48?
00:46:00 [pages turning]
00:46:05 Lift up thy voices with strength. Lift them up. Be not afraid.
00:46:11 Again, please.
00:46:14 Lift up thy voice with strength. Lift it up. Be not afraid.
00:46:19 Be not afraid!
00:46:21 Now, all of you, not just Miss Moore and Mr. Goodman,
00:46:28 all of you, lift up thy voices with strength!
00:46:34 Are you here to sing, or to swallow your words,
00:46:39 and hold back and mouth your way through a great piece of music?
00:46:44 Well, it's a waste of time, yours and mine.
00:46:50 We have four weeks. Four weeks!
00:46:57 [footsteps]
00:47:00 Three?
00:47:01 Yes, my daughter's twelve now. Time she got some culture.
00:47:05 Thanks. The church could use a full house.
00:47:08 [doorbell rings]
00:47:10 Smith Fairchild and Marchetti, good morning.
00:47:13 Yes, this is Ma.
00:47:15 I know it's been bad before, but this is a lot worse.
00:47:20 Can we get another loan?
00:47:22 I don't know. We'll have to get a new treasurer just to sort this thing out.
00:47:27 I wonder if we could cut down on the maintenance expenses.
00:47:30 I'm sorry to interrupt.
00:47:32 Yes, Terry?
00:47:34 Could I borrow the car Wednesday night?
00:47:36 Because some of the kids are going to the beach for a cookout, and I said that maybe I could drive.
00:47:41 Sounds fine to me.
00:47:43 Matt?
00:47:45 Is that the day you volunteered to drive for the senior citizens' home?
00:47:50 Yeah, uh...
00:47:52 Well, Matt, maybe...
00:47:54 No, well, never mind. I'll just tell them some other time.
00:47:58 Sure. We'll help you plan it.
00:48:01 You know, one thing we could use is some more fundraising.
00:48:04 [Singing]
00:48:33 [Singing]
00:48:55 Well, that was much better.
00:48:58 Next week, we'll go on to part two and hope the improvement continues.
00:49:03 In the meantime, I want you all to work on your vocal exercises.
00:49:09 So, thank you very much.
00:49:12 See you next week at our usual time.
00:49:16 Mrs. Pfeiffer, may I speak with you downstairs, please?
00:49:23 Yes, Mr. Adams.
00:49:25 [Indistinct chatter]
00:49:28 Thank you for coming down.
00:49:38 I want to thank you also for that jar of marmalade.
00:49:47 I did not think it appropriate to mention it in front of the entire choir, but I did appreciate it.
00:49:54 I gave them to several people. The recipe makes a big batch.
00:49:59 What did you want to talk about?
00:50:02 Well, I wanted to discuss several things.
00:50:07 You've been a member of this choir for a long time.
00:50:14 So I think you understand what this choir means to the church.
00:50:20 And I hope you understand what I'm trying to do here.
00:50:24 Yes, I understand all of that.
00:50:27 Good. I think you also understand that in any group endeavor,
00:50:33 the ultimate consideration has to be what is best for the group and for the goals of that group.
00:50:47 You want me to drop out of the choir, don't you?
00:50:51 Mr. Adams, I'm 72 years old.
00:50:54 I know my voice is not what it was when I was 20.
00:50:58 I just wanted to sing as long as I could, as long as it was acceptable.
00:51:05 If it's not, that's your decision.
00:51:10 You have every right to make that decision.
00:51:15 It is my responsibility to make that decision.
00:51:19 And it's not easy.
00:51:22 I know.
00:51:25 And I appreciate how you're changing this choir. I really do.
00:51:31 And I don't want to stand in the way of that.
00:51:34 But I can't stop coming here.
00:51:37 Giving up all this would be like dying.
00:51:42 What can we do?
00:51:45 I thought of something. I think you need an assistant.
00:51:53 There are so many things that need to be done.
00:51:55 People in the choir keep losing parts of their score.
00:51:58 There's a lot of organization needed.
00:52:00 I can run a copy machine, and I'm good at notation, at least on paper.
00:52:06 Also, the robes need a good overhaul before Christmas.
00:52:10 They're in terrible shape.
00:52:12 I don't think you've noticed how they're falling apart, have you?
00:52:15 No, I haven't.
00:52:17 Well, I have.
00:52:18 We're going to make this not only the best-sounding choir this church has ever had,
00:52:23 but also the best-looking one, and the most organized.
00:52:29 I appreciate what you've tried to say, Mr. Adams.
00:52:35 I really do.
00:52:38 But I hope you never have to be told to stop doing something you love as much as this.
00:52:45 I don't know if you could take it.
00:52:49 [music]
00:52:53 [music]
00:53:19 Dr. Gordon, all three of you, please.
00:53:22 I'm so sorry.
00:53:38 I thought the treatments were going so well.
00:53:41 They lied.
00:53:43 The treatments just prolonged his pain.
00:53:46 I don't think they lied.
00:53:47 I'm sure they did the best they could.
00:53:49 A doctor's not infallible.
00:53:51 Matt, what do I tell the children?
00:53:55 Sometimes God's reasons are difficult to find themselves.
00:53:58 Now, do I tell that to the six-year-old?
00:54:00 What do I say?
00:54:02 Maybe I'd better drive you home.
00:54:03 What are you, God's taxi service?
00:54:06 I want to know why Roy died.
00:54:08 Ask God why a beautiful man dies in the prime of life.
00:54:12 Maybe I'd better take you someplace where you won't be disturbing others.
00:54:14 Oh, am I disturbing others?
00:54:16 But I'm disturbed.
00:54:17 My husband just died.
00:54:18 People die in this place.
00:54:21 Does that disturb you?
00:54:23 It disturbs me.
00:54:25 I want to know why.
00:54:27 I want to know why.
00:54:30 [music]
00:54:33 [music]
00:54:37 [music]
00:54:41 [music]
00:54:45 [music]
00:54:48 [music]
00:54:52 [music]
00:54:56 [music]
00:54:59 [music]
00:55:06 [music]
00:55:13 [music]
00:55:20 [music]
00:55:23 [music]
00:55:36 [music]
00:55:44 [music]
00:55:47 [music]
00:55:57 [music]
00:56:11 [music]
00:56:14 [music]
00:56:24 [music]
00:56:35 [music]
00:56:38 So even if we spend the $5,000 now,
00:56:44 we've got to follow it up with another 10 to get the thing in tip-top shape.
00:56:49 I'm just wondering, gentlemen,
00:56:51 if this may not be the best time to write off this organ
00:56:54 and use the insurance money to make a better investment.
00:56:57 Such as?
00:56:59 An electronic organ.
00:57:01 I own a piece of an ice skating rink, and we just put in one there for $6,000.
00:57:06 Sounds great.
00:57:08 $6,000. Complete.
00:57:10 Complete.
00:57:12 Now, we may need a bigger model here,
00:57:14 but for $12,000 to $15,000, you can get the top of the line.
00:57:17 Maintenance is nothing.
00:57:19 All solid state.
00:57:21 Efrem, sir, what do you think about that?
00:57:23 I think that to write off this noble instrument is criminal.
00:57:28 You'd be surprised by what they can do with electronics these days.
00:57:31 I know what an electronic organ can do,
00:57:34 and I know what it cannot do.
00:57:37 At least this side of your heavenly gates, Reverend Lohman,
00:57:41 there is no substitute for the sound of a pipe organ.
00:57:46 Seth, are you totally opposed to this as well?
00:57:50 No, not totally. I mean, I have heard some very...
00:57:54 But they're not quite the same.
00:57:57 If we could get this organ repaired...
00:57:59 Gentlemen, I did not finish my report.
00:58:01 The problem is not only money. It is time.
00:58:04 There are only three companies who do this kind of work,
00:58:06 and none of them can get to it before February.
00:58:09 What about an out-of-town company?
00:58:12 It's the worst time of year.
00:58:14 Every church who can afford it schedules a servicing before Christmas.
00:58:18 On the electronic, we can get a free trial demo.
00:58:21 No obligation for two months.
00:58:26 Looks like we have very few choices.
00:58:29 Very few.
00:58:33 [Music]
00:58:57 Please, no applause. I'll go on all day.
00:58:59 What do you think?
00:59:01 Well, Mr. Luke, the volume is certainly impressive, but the choice...
00:59:05 There was only 60% of max output from these amps.
00:59:08 This model can blow your roof off.
00:59:10 What would we do for an encore?
00:59:13 Lesson, encores, preludes, processionals, funeral stuff.
00:59:17 This model can do it all.
00:59:18 You got your string effects, your harpsichord, your brass.
00:59:22 [Music]
00:59:26 Could I try something a little more like music with my work?
00:59:30 Hey, listen.
00:59:31 You're the expert. What do I know?
00:59:33 Be my guest, Sid.
00:59:35 Do you mind if I call you Sid?
00:59:36 I think his parents might object.
00:59:38 My name is Seth. Seth Rubin.
00:59:40 Seth, of course. Here, we got an adjustable bench.
00:59:43 Make yourself comfortable and play whatever you want.
00:59:49 [Music]
01:00:08 That's not too bad, is it?
01:00:09 It's a good imitation of a great song.
01:00:15 [Music]
01:00:44 [Music]
01:00:52 And she brought forth her firstborn son,
01:00:55 and wrapped him in swaddling clothes,
01:00:58 and laid him in a manger,
01:01:00 because there was no room for them in the inn.
01:01:04 The Bible tells us the child was born in utmost simplicity.
01:01:09 Shouldn't we at least reflect that simplicity in our celebrations?
01:01:14 The birth of Christ required no complicated attendance.
01:01:19 Why then should our celebrations of that birth
01:01:23 be attended by such rabid commercialism?
01:01:26 [Radio chatter]
01:01:29 Is it really necessary?
01:01:31 [Radio chatter]
01:01:33 Is it really necessary in an age
01:01:36 when one quarter of the world's population goes to bed hungry
01:01:39 to consume the meaningless, disposable products
01:01:43 of a civilization steeped in gluttony?
01:01:45 Dispatch, can we do that after lunch?
01:01:48 [Laughter]
01:01:51 I had a feeling it was going to be one of those days.
01:01:54 [Laughter]
01:01:56 Matt?
01:01:57 Uh-huh?
01:01:58 That was one of your better sermons, I must say.
01:02:01 Oh, really?
01:02:02 Well, if it's going to be that entertaining every Sunday,
01:02:04 we should just keep the damn thing.
01:02:07 Well, could that be?
01:02:09 [Telephone rings]
01:02:18 Oh, that's all right, Tonya.
01:02:20 I'll pick him up later.
01:02:21 I'm sorry.
01:02:22 And you don't have to say you're sorry about everything, okay?
01:02:28 Oh, Reverend, thank God you're home.
01:02:30 It wouldn't be right if you heard about it from somebody else first.
01:02:33 Heard what?
01:02:34 Well, I've been thinking it over in my head a million times,
01:02:37 and after the fight, I felt he must be capable of anything.
01:02:41 I know I'm right.
01:02:42 Right about what?
01:02:44 The vandalism.
01:02:45 I know who broke the organ.
01:02:47 I saw him leave the church that night.
01:02:50 It was Wendell Curtis.
01:02:55 Well, you know, Muriel, you could be mistaken.
01:02:57 I mean, perhaps if somebody just talked to Wendell, he--
01:02:59 No, no, the police are questioning him right now.
01:03:02 The police?
01:03:04 They told me I acted very responsibly.
01:03:09 I have to get down there right now.
01:03:11 Sorry about lunch.
01:03:15 I'll be back in some seconds.
01:03:18 [piano playing]
01:03:32 I got here as soon as I could.
01:03:41 Did my grandmama call you?
01:03:43 No.
01:03:44 No, I heard about it from Muriel.
01:03:47 Muriel.
01:03:49 You know, Muriel is a crazy woman.
01:03:51 That woman is crazy, and they believe her.
01:03:55 What do you mean?
01:03:56 Man, I know she saw me come out of the church that night,
01:04:00 but I was practicing, man, just practicing.
01:04:04 All I wanted to do was see what my voice would sound like in the church.
01:04:11 Man, I ain't break nothing.
01:04:17 I swear to God I ain't break nothing.
01:04:19 Wendell, it's going to be all right.
01:04:22 If you're innocent, like you say you are, then you got nothing to worry about.
01:04:30 What did he talk to you?
01:04:32 Not much.
01:04:34 Did you still want to press charges against him or not?
01:04:36 I don't even know if he's guilty.
01:04:38 That's what jury trials are for.
01:04:40 He told me he didn't do it.
01:04:42 Hey, they don't get off.
01:04:45 What's so good of pressing charges?
01:04:48 Have a draw away.
01:04:52 Excuse me, are you in charge?
01:04:54 That's right. What can I do for you?
01:04:55 I got to confess something.
01:04:58 Terry!
01:05:00 Was it like a blackout?
01:05:02 I mean, did you know what you were doing?
01:05:07 No, it wasn't a blackout.
01:05:09 I remember everything.
01:05:12 I mean, how it looked and what I did and how it felt.
01:05:18 Did it feel good?
01:05:20 What do you mean, did it feel good?
01:05:24 I mean, whatever you were angry about.
01:05:29 Did it feel good to get it out?
01:05:32 I don't know.
01:05:35 I was just walking behind the altar and I saw this vase of flowers
01:05:40 and I felt like knocking it over, so I knocked it over.
01:05:44 And then I saw something else and I hit that.
01:05:49 I just kept going.
01:05:52 I remember I felt just a lot of energy.
01:06:01 And then I started laughing because something struck me as funny.
01:06:04 What was so funny?
01:06:06 I thought about what people always say about destroying private property, you know.
01:06:11 I wondered whether this was private property or not.
01:06:14 I mean, I still don't know.
01:06:17 I mean, who does the church belong to?
01:06:20 We live here, we're in it all the time, but does it belong to us?
01:06:25 Or does it belong to the congregation or does it belong to anybody?
01:06:28 Of course it belongs to us.
01:06:31 Not like a car or a bank account.
01:06:34 My God, Terry, this is our life's work.
01:06:39 This church means more to me than anything in the world and to your mother.
01:06:44 [Music]
01:07:02 The warpage isn't too bad in there, but several pieces have to be made from scratch.
01:07:06 I know this metal.
01:07:08 I can work this with my tools.
01:07:10 It might look easy, Henry, but it's going to take very precise tolerances.
01:07:14 In Denmark, I was apprenticed to a silversmith.
01:07:18 But it's going to take more than one person.
01:07:21 Well, you've got me.
01:07:23 All we need now is a woodworker.
01:07:24 Maisie Kim's husband works in a cabinet shop.
01:07:27 If he can join us, we might be able to get it back together by Christmas.
01:07:31 It would be a wonderful surprise for Ephraim.
01:07:34 My lips are glued.
01:07:37 [Music]
01:08:06 [Music]
01:08:28 You think maybe Terry should be here helping us with this?
01:08:32 He's doing volunteer work through a probation officer.
01:08:35 Maybe he can't bring himself to come back here.
01:08:38 That boy's been overchurched anyway.
01:08:41 He ought to do his penance somewhere else.
01:08:43 [Music]
01:09:12 [Music]
01:09:32 Mr. Adams, good morning.
01:09:34 Thank you for coming early.
01:09:35 Any Sunday morning on which I must forego my second cup of tea
01:09:39 and my time's crossword is not good morning.
01:09:42 It's the electronic organ.
01:09:44 That's monstrosity.
01:09:46 [Music]
01:10:12 [Music]
01:10:36 I was just getting used to the police calls.
01:10:40 [Laughter]
01:10:43 [Music]
01:11:12 [Music]
01:11:40 Hello?
01:11:41 Where have you been?
01:11:42 I've been calling all afternoon.
01:11:43 I've been out trying to find something for Robbie for Christmas.
01:11:45 You know that's what I've been trying to reach you about.
01:11:47 We can't find him.
01:11:48 What?
01:11:51 How long has it been?
01:11:52 Well, I put him to bed early last night, but his bed wasn't slept in.
01:11:56 All night?
01:11:59 Did you call the police?
01:12:00 Yes, we've talked to everyone.
01:12:02 He got very upset the other day and threatened to go to San Francisco.
01:12:06 Did you check the bus station?
01:12:07 Yes, but they don't keep records.
01:12:09 You don't suppose he's a hitchhiker?
01:12:12 Oh, my God, I hope not.
01:12:15 Well, I don't know what to do.
01:12:17 I can't come there.
01:12:18 He might be on his way here.
01:12:19 I don't know, Sue.
01:12:21 I don't know what more any of us can do.
01:12:24 [music]
01:12:53 [music]
01:13:18 Are you sure this is the right place, kid?
01:13:20 Yeah.
01:13:21 Well, I'm going to go check on the other guys.
01:13:23 Otherwise, we're heading straight for the cops.
01:13:25 I don't have time for this.
01:13:28 See, I told you it was the right address.
01:13:30 Right, right.
01:13:31 Yeah.
01:13:32 Oh, I'm so worried.
01:13:34 The fare is $3.50, lady.
01:13:36 Oh, sure.
01:13:39 There you go.
01:13:40 Thank you very much.
01:13:41 Wow, this is a neat place.
01:13:42 Merry Christmas.
01:13:43 Merry Christmas.
01:13:44 Robbie, where have you been?
01:13:45 Hiding on that dumb bus for two days.
01:13:47 That's where I've been.
01:13:49 What?
01:13:50 That didn't work.
01:13:51 Oh, no.
01:13:52 I thought I was going to--
01:13:53 You thought you were going to what?
01:13:55 You know.
01:13:56 Did you eat anything?
01:13:57 You must be starving.
01:13:59 Well, I made myself a couple of peanut butter sandwiches.
01:14:02 But I think I used them up before Utah.
01:14:04 Utah?
01:14:05 What did you eat between Utah and California?
01:14:07 Oh, I had a hamburger at a place called Reno's.
01:14:10 Boy, they have a lot of slunk machines there.
01:14:13 I used up most of my money on the hamburger.
01:14:15 But I had a quarter left.
01:14:18 I snuck it and tried it.
01:14:20 Oh, Robbie, that was crazy when you don't have anything left
01:14:22 to use it on a slunk machine.
01:14:24 Well, at least you found out what a gyp they are, right?
01:14:26 Right.
01:14:27 You can say for the call to Grandma.
01:14:36 [MUSIC - "A CHILD IS BORN"]
01:14:39 (SINGING) A child is born.
01:14:41 A child is born.
01:14:43 Born unto us, a child is born.
01:14:46 Born unto us, a child is born.
01:14:49 Born unto us, a son is given.
01:14:53 Born unto us, a son is given.
01:14:57 Born unto us, a child is born.
01:15:00 Born unto us, a child is born.
01:15:03 Born unto us, a son is given.
01:15:07 Born unto us, a son is given.
01:15:11 Born unto us, a son is given.
01:15:14 And the government shall be upon his shoulders.
01:15:19 And the government shall be upon his shoulders.
01:15:24 And the government shall be upon his shoulders.
01:15:27 And his name shall be called--
01:15:30 Now, not having money can be good for you.
01:15:33 It forces you to be creative.
01:15:35 What should we make for Grandma?
01:15:38 We could draw some pictures.
01:15:40 That's a start.
01:15:42 Why don't we put the pictures on a calendar?
01:15:45 Yeah, and we can mark the days that are special.
01:15:47 Like what?
01:15:48 Like March 19.
01:15:51 Look, smarty pants, we'll put everybody's birthday on it.
01:15:53 OK, but mine's in red.
01:15:55 What can I get Daddy?
01:15:58 I don't know, honey.
01:15:59 He's always been difficult.
01:16:02 I know what I'd like.
01:16:04 What?
01:16:06 To all be together, like it was.
01:16:09 Don't start now, Robbie, OK?
01:16:11 Why?
01:16:12 How come?
01:16:13 Because it's not going to happen.
01:16:14 I've told you that back home.
01:16:17 No, Maha.
01:16:19 Daddy said you were the one who wanted a divorce.
01:16:23 Damn him.
01:16:25 Mommy.
01:16:26 He knows very well.
01:16:27 You mean Daddy lied to me?
01:16:30 We all lied to ourselves.
01:16:33 Too long.
01:16:35 So in addition to Terry's apology to you, and mine,
01:16:41 the three of us will pick the sort of a committee
01:16:44 to come here and tell you that everybody misses you.
01:16:49 And that we're all sorry about what happened.
01:16:54 And we hope you'll come back with us as soon as you can.
01:17:00 And we hope you'll come back with us as soon as you feel like it.
01:17:07 It's OK.
01:17:09 You didn't have to bother.
01:17:11 No bother, Wendell.
01:17:13 Something terrible happened.
01:17:14 You got caught in the middle.
01:17:16 We don't want it to happen to you or anyone else again.
01:17:20 You can't play hooky, Wendell.
01:17:22 We need all the tennis we can get.
01:17:25 Otherwise, the bases will wipe us out.
01:17:29 There is a dinner planned for the Friday before performance, potluck.
01:17:34 There's lots of good food.
01:17:37 Everybody will be there.
01:17:40 We'd love to have you, Wendell.
01:17:45 Well, uh, thanks for the invitation.
01:17:52 I'll try and make it.
01:17:55 Well, thank you for being so understanding.
01:18:01 Take it easy, son.
01:18:02 Yeah, I will.
01:18:11 Wendell, why aren't you mad?
01:18:14 What?
01:18:15 Angry.
01:18:16 Why aren't you angry?
01:18:17 You have every right to be.
01:18:20 There's nothing to be angry about.
01:18:21 It was just a mistake.
01:18:23 It was more than that, and you know it.
01:18:25 We all know it.
01:18:27 It was terribly unfair.
01:18:29 Zoe, sometimes life is unfair.
01:18:31 You can't expect justice all the time.
01:18:32 No, we can't.
01:18:34 But when life is that lousy, when people act that way and we bear the brunt of it,
01:18:39 we have every right to hit the ceiling, to hit something, a wall, a door.
01:18:45 Do it when we leave.
01:18:47 But do it, Wendell.
01:18:48 Get it out.
01:19:12 Eggnog?
01:19:13 No, thank you.
01:19:15 I'm already way over my calorie count.
01:19:18 Isn't that what a party's for, to stop counting?
01:19:21 Normally I'd agree with you.
01:19:24 I seem to have lost my appetite.
01:19:26 I guess I've got stage fright a day early.
01:19:28 Well, my brother's one of your soloists, and he's so nervous he can't stop eating.
01:19:33 You're Will's brother?
01:19:36 Yes, but I'm thinking of resigning.
01:19:38 Until then, my name's Dan Gardner.
01:19:43 I'm so gentle.
01:19:46 [singing]
01:19:48 [applause]
01:19:58 [singing]
01:20:21 [applause]
01:20:43 Thank you.
01:20:45 Mr. Adams, that's very nice of you.
01:20:48 But you know what the rules of the gift exchange were.
01:20:51 Yes, Mrs. Pfeiffer.
01:20:52 Yes, I know what the rules of the gift exchange are.
01:20:56 I'm also a man who normally sets great store by rules, as you all know.
01:21:03 I am also a man who makes great demands on people.
01:21:08 And therefore I'm trying to find a way to thank you all
01:21:13 for your effort and for your devotion to our common goal.
01:21:19 If you'll excuse me for being a little out of breath.
01:21:22 The bus broke down this evening,
01:21:25 and I took to the sidewalks, forgetting about our San Francisco hills.
01:21:31 [laughter]
01:21:32 So if you don't mind, I'd like to sit down and thank you very much.
01:21:38 [applause]
01:21:50 Wendell, I want you to know I didn't accuse you of anything.
01:21:57 I just told people what I saw.
01:22:01 I hope you're not angry with me.
01:22:05 All right. Maybe you should figure out what you're angry about.
01:22:14 You know, April, these shirts were a nice thought.
01:22:19 But it's not that easy to get off the hook.
01:22:23 We've been slaving for you long enough now
01:22:26 that before you get your piece of cake, you're going to have to sing for your supper.
01:22:31 Oh, he can sing, you know.
01:22:33 He says that he's a bit backward sometimes.
01:22:36 Come on up here.
01:22:37 [applause]
01:22:46 Now, at least I'm not going to ask him to do a solo.
01:22:50 This is a song that he and I sang together many years ago down on the waterfront.
01:22:55 Let's see who remembers it the best, huh?
01:22:58 All right, Seth.
01:23:00 [music]
01:23:03 [singing]
01:23:31 [music]
01:23:36 [siren]
01:23:53 Any news?
01:23:54 The nurse said the doctor's still with him.
01:23:56 Well, we should hear something soon.
01:23:59 Now, who wanted cream and sugar?
01:24:01 I hope I got it straight.
01:24:03 Oh, I'm sure you did.
01:24:07 Thank you.
01:24:10 Seth, there's one for you.
01:24:16 Seth, you can go home if you want to.
01:24:19 I can't go home. He's dying.
01:24:23 He is not going to die.
01:24:25 It may be serious, but I don't think he's going to die.
01:24:28 He is.
01:24:29 He's dying right now.
01:24:30 He's dying and we're out here drinking coffee.
01:24:41 Is anyone here a relative of Ephraim Adams?
01:24:44 No, Ephraim's all alone.
01:24:46 Is it serious?
01:24:48 It was a mild stroke.
01:24:50 How he recovers is a matter of physical therapy and his own will to improve.
01:24:56 Well, if it's only a matter of will, there's nothing to worry about.
01:24:58 He's got plenty of that.
01:25:01 I talked with his doctor again about noon,
01:25:05 and he said he was doing fine, despite the paralysis.
01:25:11 I think he's a good doctor for Ephraim.
01:25:14 He said when a patient starts ordering their staff around,
01:25:17 even on notepaper, it's a sure sign of recovery.
01:25:23 However, the question remains, what do we do about next week?
01:25:30 I suppose that the easy thing to do would be to cancel.
01:25:35 But I just hate to see all your wonderful work go for nothing.
01:25:40 Seth, isn't it possible that somewhere we could find a choir director
01:25:45 who was familiar enough with the Messiah to step in?
01:25:49 No, I know how individual Ephraim's vision of this music is.
01:25:55 It's not something you can just hand over at the last moment to someone else.
01:26:01 Since you do know it so well, Seth,
01:26:05 wouldn't it be possible for you to conduct?
01:26:07 It's true.
01:26:09 You're the only one who knows the music as well as Ephraim.
01:26:11 No, I can't play and conduct a choir.
01:26:14 I'll turn pages for you.
01:26:16 No, I just can't do that kind of thing.
01:26:18 Some people can, but I can't.
01:26:22 Then we can't go on with the performance.
01:26:27 "Cant died in the cornfield."
01:26:29 What did you say?
01:26:33 "Cant died in the cornfield."
01:26:35 It's an old Nebraska expression.
01:26:37 I just remembered it.
01:26:42 Cant died in the cornfield, Seth.
01:26:45 That's right, Seth.
01:26:46 Cant died in the cornfield.
