00:00 Newcastle United beaten on penalties by Chelsea here at Stamford Bridge this
00:05 evening in the Cowboy Cup quarter-final. They led for so long as well.
00:09 Callum Wilson opening the scoring capitalizing on a defensive mistake by
00:14 Benoit Badiachil and scores his 46th goal for the club in his 100th
00:19 appearance so pretty good strike rate for Callum Wilson but after that Newcastle
00:24 really was backs against the wall stuff Chelsea pegged them in didn't ask too
00:30 many questions of Martin de Bravka he did make a couple of good saves actually
00:33 particularly from Raheem Sterling in the second half but Chelsea knocked on the
00:38 door and it looked like Newcastle had all the answers to them until the 92nd
00:43 minute where Kieran Trippier on as a substitute back from suspension just
00:48 doesn't quite get his header right and Mikhailo Mudrik intercepts the header
00:53 and sort of side-futs it calmly into the bottom corner to equalize for Chelsea
01:00 another late goal Newcastle's 11th late goal conceded this season they've only
01:05 conceded 22 all season so when half your goals are coming in the final 15 minutes
01:10 of matches it probably tells a story that the club or the players sorry aren't
01:16 quite a fully fully fit and performing at the best energy levels are possibly
01:23 can which obviously comes with a big caveat of the injury situation and
01:28 flogging the same players and I think we saw tonight Anthony Gordon who had been
01:34 struggling playing probably at 80% 70% at times the past few games took a knock
01:39 tonight could have been a red card no VAR tonight which probably saved Chelsea
01:44 on more than one occasion in terms of tackles like that but then had to come
01:48 off Emil Kvath also came off Sven Bottmann came off as well at half-time
01:54 but that was a pre-planned substitution given he's only just returned from
01:59 injury but yeah it's a tough one for for Newcastle after exiting the Champions
02:05 League last week in heartbreaking circumstances really the way they did it
02:11 conceding late on against AC Milan and then you're going back to that PSG game
02:15 the late penalty and this had a similar feel to the PSG game where Newcastle got
02:20 the early goal had something to hold on to and would defend him really really
02:24 quite well and then last minute or 90 seconds to go and just slip up obviously
02:32 this is a defensive error rather than a refereeing mistake this time around but
02:37 just just tough to take we heard Eddie Howard in his side because this was a
02:43 competition that you're looking at the teams left in it could have won and it
02:48 wouldn't surprise me if Chelsea went on to win this competition obviously
02:51 Liverpool will play tomorrow night and we'll see see what they can do but full
02:55 and middles for the other semi-finalists you sort of half fancy your chances if
02:59 you get through and Chelsea did that on penalties perfect record from the
03:04 penalty spot in the shootout four penalties out of four
03:06 Kieran Trippier couldn't make amends as he stepped up second for Newcastle and
03:12 missed the target and then Matt Ritchie off the bench as well couldn't convert
03:20 the penalty it was a crucial penalty and it's saved by the Chelsea goalkeeper
03:25 and Chelsea go through to the semi-finals so yeah it's been a been a
03:29 tough month for Newcastle injuries of course taking the toll and Eddie Howard
03:33 having to play very very similar players over and over again and not make changes
03:40 and tonight you could argue you had Paul Dummitt and Lewis Hall on the bench that
03:45 he could have potentially brought on but again an argument could be made what what
03:51 how much difference would those changes have made fresh legs obviously made a
03:55 difference you could see a lot of players look tired out there tonight and
04:00 it wasn't a case of Newcastle completely throwing away a place in the
04:05 semi-final it was just a individual mistake that the seeing the game out was
04:12 there that they'd almost done it and then it's just a slightly undercooked
04:16 header from Kieran Trippier who as good as he's been for so long for Newcastle
04:21 the sort of epitome of consistency and prides himself on being such a reliable
04:28 player in that Newcastle back line right back and it's just his past three games
04:33 missed the Fulham game due to suspension when Newcastle won but the Spurs
04:38 game and the Everton game where he made two three mistakes that all led to goals
04:43 and then tonight as well it's just been a tough month for Kieran Trippier and
04:48 hopefully he can get back to the levels we all know and we've seen for so long
04:54 and but it is a concern when your player who is the sort of glue of the dressing
05:01 movement as Eddie Howe put it is sort of looking a bit looking a bit shaky
05:06 looking a bit fatigued mentally and letting mistakes creep into his game and
05:11 these are games that Newcastle okay Chelsea had the majority of the ball
05:14 majority of chances tonight but Newcastle if that mistake doesn't happen
05:21 we're talking about a semi-semi final place and if you look look back at
05:26 Everton those mistakes don't happen potentially Newcastle get a point at
05:30 Goodison Park does it happen those mistakes have crept into Newcastle's
05:35 game and it's unfortunate but now you're looking ahead Eddie Howe was asked in
05:41 his post-match press conference where do you go from here in terms of your season
05:46 because this past week it's it's derailed slightly okay with a with a
05:51 win in the Premier League still still looking looking fairly good in the
05:54 Premier League sixth in the table but you're out of two competitions one in
05:59 particular the Carabao Cup where you probably would have fancied your chances
06:04 of winning a Champions League obviously you want to get as far as possible but
06:07 realistically Newcastle would have been rank outsiders but had they won tonight
06:10 they would have would have been right among the favourites if they weren't
06:14 already certainly with Liverpool now it now will be Liverpool and Chelsea so
06:18 yeah moving on looting away on the 23rd of December and Newcastle with their
06:25 threadbare squad more injuries tonight as such more knocks as Eddie Howe put it
06:30 and Emil Kraft and Anthony Gordon whether they're fit and available for
06:34 the weekend remains to be seen but yeah big game now at Kenilworth Road as
06:40 Newcastle look to bounce back and make it back-to-back wins in the Premier
06:44 League we'll have to have to take a step back and look hey the Premier League
06:48 season is is going well and it's it's not a silver lining I would never say
06:53 that and Eddie Howe wouldn't say but two fewer games next month in terms of
06:59 having progressed in the Carabao Cup we'll get a little bit more of a break
07:03 and a little bit extra time for players to recover which will obviously help
07:08 them in the Premier League but if given the chance you'd snap your hand off if
07:13 Newcastle were talking tonight and then the final four the Carabao Cup but not
07:18 to be and we'll move on and look ahead to Luton Town on Saturday so yeah for
07:24 all the reaction to this game just head over the Shields Gazette we'll have
07:29 play-arrings, reaction from Eddie Howe, injury updates all of that stuff might
07:33 not want to read too much into a disappointing, well it's a draw technically but a
07:40 penalty shootout cup exit but we'll have it all over on the Shields Gazette so
07:45 check that out. Cheers.
