00:00 How's it going everybody?
00:01 Randall Sweet, AllSooners.com, back to talk more about OU's 2024 signing class.
00:06 I'm going to talk about Mikel Patterson McDonald, the four-star safety from Westmore High School
00:11 in Moore, Oklahoma.
00:12 So, again, coming from nearby Westmore, just down the road from Norman, Mikel Patterson
00:16 McDonald is about 5'11" playing the safety position.
00:19 Now, Mikel Patterson McDonald is actually the son of Larry McDonald, who, if you are
00:24 not familiar with the name, was an OU football player himself.
00:29 He walked onto the Sooners, and again, so Brent Venables and company getting more of
00:33 that OU bloodline in this class seems like that's something that they've really made
00:38 a priority.
00:39 And Mikel Patterson McDonald is another guy who's a good athlete.
00:43 He's a long jumper on track.
00:44 He's had some success in the 6A division in Oklahoma there.
00:47 But really, his calling card is that he's a good leader, he's really smart, he knows
00:52 how to call the defense back in the defensive backfield, and again, he's really good at
00:56 getting his guys, getting the defense in front of him aligned, making sure everyone's playing
01:00 their role, calling out everything that the offense is doing, things like that.
01:05 But aside from that, he's not afraid to come up and lay the wood and run defense.
01:09 I've seen it in person.
01:10 He really loves to come downhill and hit guys.
01:12 And again, in pass coverage, he'll do the same thing.
01:14 If the ball's coming across the middle of the field, he's not afraid at all to come
01:18 lay a lick on the receiver.
01:20 And again, if a running back's running to him on the outside, or if he's coming down
01:23 in the box and hitting those guys, even though he's not the biggest defensive back in the
01:27 world, he's not afraid to go deliver a hit.
01:30 And it's something that he's actually pretty good at, despite, again, not being one of
01:33 those 6-2, 6-3 defensive backs.
01:36 Aside from that, he played receiver this year for Westmore, and had a solid season on the
01:39 offensive end as well.
01:40 But I do think that the brighter future for Mikel Patterson-McDonald is that defensive
01:45 back.
01:46 His leadership, his intelligence, they match really well with what Brandon Hall, what Brent
01:49 Venables, what those guys preach on that defensive staff.
