00:00 Hello, welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:04 Wet and windy weather is still on the cards as we head towards Christmas, with low pressure
00:08 very much in charge up to the northwest of the UK. High pressure down to the south though
00:13 does bring us some milder than average air with some warmer temperatures over the next
00:17 few days. Through Christmas Day itself, this frontal system sweeps its way eastwards across
00:21 the UK before we see a very brief ridge of high pressure developing into Boxing Day and
00:26 those temperatures generally returning closer to average for the time of year.
00:31 Back to Saturday evening though and heavy rain continues across parts of Scotland and
00:35 sinks its way southwards across parts of Wales and into parts of England as well, turning
00:39 particularly heavy over western parts of Wales where we could see up to 80mm of rain. Generally
00:44 remaining cloudy though for much of England and Wales, although there will be some clearer
00:48 spells across the far north of Northern Ireland and maybe into parts of Scotland too, with
00:52 those blustery showers pushing in from the west. It'll be a widely mild night across
00:57 the UK, temperatures in the south around 11 or 12 degrees and for much of Scotland as
01:02 well staying in the high single figures. The very very far north east of Scotland though
01:06 perhaps staying close to freezing and we could even see the odd touch of frost possible.
01:11 So a bit of a chilly start across the very far north with those showers continuing to
01:15 push in from the west as we go through Christmas Eve morning. Further south though, still a
01:19 very damp and cloudy picture, rain continues to push its way eastwards as we head through
01:24 the afternoon, turning particularly windy across northern parts of England and Scotland
01:29 too where we could see gusts up to 70mph. This could lead to some tricky driving conditions
01:33 and some travel disruption for anybody travelling before Christmas. Another mild day, particularly
01:39 under all that cloud and rain in the south around 13 or 14 degrees and still above average
01:44 across Northern Ireland and Scotland too. Through the rest of Christmas Eve into the
01:49 evening that rain across the south slowly pushes its way south and eastwards so perhaps
01:53 turning drier for a time across parts of Wales and England. Those showers across Scotland
01:58 too will gradually start to ease with some clear skies here so perhaps a bit of a frosty
02:02 start in places, temperatures as low as -2 or -3 in some rural spots. Down in the south
02:09 though around 11 or 12 degrees so still a very mild start to Christmas Day and a very
02:14 cloudy and damp start too for much of England and Wales. That rain continues to push in
02:19 from the west turning heavier across parts of Wales and south-west England so a very
02:23 cloudy and damp day for much of England and Wales on Christmas Day and a mild day too,
02:28 temperatures around 13 or 14 degrees. Further north though across Scotland a band of rain
02:33 pushes its way northwards turning wintry over the hills, we could even see up to 10cm of
02:37 snow so definitely a white Christmas for Scotland. Temperatures here are closer to average though
02:42 and turning a little bit chillier as we head through Christmas Day night. That rain across
02:47 the south though gradually clears its way south and eastwards so turning much drier
02:51 across parts of Wales and south-west England through Christmas Day night leading to a bit
02:55 of a frosty start for Boxing Day. Boxing Day, definitely the best day of the next couple
03:00 of days if you're looking for some dry weather. Plenty of dry conditions around, even some
03:04 sunshine across Northern Ireland, Northern England and into parts of Scotland too. A
03:08 little cloudier across parts of Wales and south-west England as this next system waits
03:12 in the wings but temperatures are generally closer to average across much of the UK, around
03:16 9 or 10 degrees in the south and maybe 5 or 6 in the north but with some lighter winds
03:20 probably feeling a little more pleasant than recent days. That wet weather waiting in the
03:24 wings arrives as we go through the rest of the week so you can keep up to date with that
03:29 by following us on social media and don't forget to subscribe to YouTube to never miss
03:32 a weather update. Bye bye.
