00:02 Derbyshire Police have warned parents to read up about the law
00:06 following an increase in children using e-scooters since Christmas and the New Year.
00:10 Officers say they have seen more youngsters wrongly using the vehicles,
00:15 particularly in and around Littleover. Police say this is because vehicles may have been bought for
00:19 Christmas. They say two children seen riding e-scooters had escaped officers despite being
00:25 asked to stop, which is a traffic offence. According to the Derbyshire Police website,
00:30 e-scooters are classed as motor vehicles under the Traffic Act of 1988. This means the rules that
00:36 apply to motor vehicles also apply to e-scooters, including the need to have a licence, tax and
00:41 insurance. However, it is not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters,
00:47 which means it is illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces, unless they are used on
00:51 private land. Anyone using a private e-scooter illegally risks having their vehicle seized by
00:57 police. A Chesterfield secondary school has improved its Ofsted rating after being converted
01:04 into an academy. Outward Academy Hasland Hall has been named good across all categories following a
01:10 recent Ofsted inspection. The secondary school, which has 826 pupils on the roll, had previously
01:16 been rated as inadequate in 2019, but joined the Outward Grain Academies Trust in 2021.
01:22 Since then, massive improvements have been made and Ofsted inspectors praise the school for its
01:27 high and uncompromising expectations for pupils. Principal Ian Cooper said, "The recent Ofsted
01:33 judgment epitomises the journey that we have been on here at Outward Academy Hasland Hall,
01:37 and as principal I am extremely proud to have led the academy during this period.
01:42 To achieve this outcome within such a short time is a testament to the hard work, commitment and
01:46 collective efforts of the staff, academy council, parents and most importantly our wonderful students."
