00:00 The government is poised to enhance enforcement and impose penalties on those misusing bus lanes.
00:08 In a press briefing on Tuesday, Transport Minister Anthony Lok explained that the government is actively working to increase public transport usage.
00:17 According to the Prasarana 2023 report, the average daily bus ridership was 473,000 in 2019,
00:25 dropped to 178,000 in 2022 and then rose to 241,000 in 2023.
00:33 Aiming to continue this upward trend, the government has set a target of 285,000 daily bus riders for this year.
00:41 Addressing concerns about the unpredictability of bus services due to traffic congestion, Lok said that the government will introduce more bus lanes.
00:51 Why people don't want to take buses instead of rail? Because rail, number one, frequency is higher and more predictable.
00:58 Because you know rail, no traffic jam unless there is a disruption.
01:03 But buses, you are stuck in traffic jam.
01:05 Buses, you are just like you are driving your own car, you are still in the same traffic.
01:10 You are stuck in traffic jam and the frequency sometimes is unpredictable because when the traffic jam happens, the bus is so late.
01:18 So that explains why the usage of bus is not preferred by a majority of the public transport users.
01:25 But having said that, we are addressing those issues.
01:28 That's why we are putting a lot of efforts to introduce bus lanes in Klang Valley.
01:33 We have two bus lanes currently, Jalan Genting Kelang and also Jalan Empang.
01:38 So these two particular corridors are important.
01:41 So if these two corridors are successful, we are looking for more corridors to have bus lanes.
01:46 The government is also considering the imposition of penalties for those who misuse bus lanes in the future.
01:53 Yes, that will come.
01:55 My approach has always been carrot and stick.
01:59 We give you the carrot first.
02:01 The stick will come later.
02:04 Take the carrot first.
02:06 So if the carrot cannot entice you, then the stick will come.
02:10 Lok added that the overall infrastructure will be improved, with upgrades planned for 117 bus stops, 11 walkways and 15 bus hubs this year.
