12:33 >> Welcome, everyone, to the Calgary arena here in Winsport, Canada, Olympic Park.
12:38 I'm Ted Barton along with Lisa Carriera.
12:41 Lisa, can you hear me?
12:43 >> I can hear you.
12:44 Can you hear me?
12:46 >> I was doing that opening on my own.
12:50 >> Anyways, we're all fixed up here.
12:53 >> Is it working now?
12:54 >> It is working now, yeah.
12:55 We can hear you.
12:56 >> Okay.
12:57 >> That's good.
12:58 So what I was saying, obviously, I mean, I watched the practice this morning, as did you from afar, of course.
13:03 You know what I'm saying is you think I'm just sort of saying this to make the event exciting.
13:08 Skating has been my life, and I've seen the best, the Olympics.
13:11 I have seen everything, but I have not -- I could not believe what I was watching this morning, how good and how good each skater was
13:19 and how closely they skated and the dynamics of the program.
13:22 It was really spectacular, and you have to appreciate these are the best in the world, and they're right here in Canada.
13:28 >> We're very fortunate to have such high-caliber skaters.
13:31 The quality of the caliber of skaters within the teams is absolutely remarkable.
13:36 The energy in this building, the excitement building for this event, and we just can't wait to watch and learn to see.
13:45 >> It is incredible.
13:46 We're looking forward to this as we take a look at the judges for this event, the officials, we thank, of course,
13:52 for all the time that they spent in their discipline and all those rules and so many skaters to judge at one time.
13:59 It's really quite remarkable.
14:01 What can we expect?
14:02 What are the program elements that we're looking for here today?
14:05 >> So there's 10 elements that we'll be seeing in the free program.
14:08 That's quite a few.
14:09 I'll go over them just briefly.
14:12 You'll see a creative lift in the free program as well as a group lift.
14:17 So just the features you'll see are different between the two elements.
14:20 You will see two intersections, one where the point of intersection, you'll see a rotation, the other one where you'll see something other than a rotation as the skaters go through.
14:29 You'll see a move element with spirals, upright extensions, that sort of thing.
14:34 You'll see a no-hold element where the features count.
14:37 You'll see basically the skaters skating in a block formation, not holding, going across the ice, doing different intricate patterns.
14:43 You'll see a pair element, which is a death spiral.
14:46 You'll see a pivoting block, a synchronized spin, which can either be all 16 skaters doing individual spins or it can be pair spins.
14:54 And you'll see a traveling element, which will either be a traveling circle or a wheel going across the ice.
14:59 And it can be a combination of those two elements traveling as well.
15:02 [crowd cheering]
15:08 First team to take the ice, currently sitting in third place but very close to that first place position is Nova Senior.
15:16 As we mentioned yesterday, Ted, they have a two-minute warm-up on the ice here.
15:22 Getting into their knees and ankles, taking in their surroundings, trying to get comfortable and ready for their big performance tonight.
15:32 I have to say that this building is electric, and it's the first time this week that we've had that sort of electricity in the building with a growing audience, which is good news.
15:44 There's so much excitement on the ice.
15:48 Tons of energy.
15:49 It's really special.
15:51 Always is special to watch synchronized.
15:54 It sure is.
15:55 Nothing like the synchro community and how we celebrate our athletes.
16:00 Lots of enthusiasm.
16:02 I wanted to say, Lisa, that back to my statement that because these teams are three of the best in the world, there are many others, obviously, as well.
16:11 Any one of these could be on the podium, but the point is that we get spoiled because they're so good, we think, "Oh, okay, well, that's good synchro."
16:18 No, no, no.
16:19 That's not good synchro.
16:20 That's great.
16:21 It is top-of-the-world synchro here at home.
16:25 Now, Ted, I did want to go over, we had a few questions between the short and free today that came in on my phone from the community just asking, "How do falls affect the overall score?"
16:37 Just to kind of share with the audience, if there is a fall in an element, it has huge impacts on a team.
16:45 They're going to get a minus one in their overall score for the fall.
16:49 It will also be reflected in a reduction in the GOE score of that element, and for the program component scores, which are scored out of 10, they cannot get higher than a 9.5 in any of the categories just for having one fall.
17:05 So when we're looking at, obviously, three incredibly strong senior teams in Canada, the winner could be determined tonight based on who has a clean skate.
17:14 So we want to see everyone skating clean, and that's what we're hoping for all of these teams.
17:19 [Speaking in French]
17:28 Here we go.
17:29 [Speaking in French]
17:42 They're portraying the journey of individuals facing overwhelming challenges, the highs and lows of the human experience.
17:50 They're going to skate to Supernova.

22:05 From Quebec, Noah.
22:08 Well, you talk about skating with passion, I don't think they could have skated with any more passion.
22:13 That was from the heart, and it was beautiful.
22:15 [Cheering]
22:21 Ted, I don't know if you were taking a look at the technical scores on the top of the screen.
22:25 As they went through their program, I did see a number of their elements downgraded from the level that they were attempting.
22:31 So we'll have to see when the tech panel reviews those elements if they're able to give them the extra credit.
22:37 Time will tell.
22:39 Five of the elements were under review, so they're taking a close look at some of the details, of course,
22:44 and we'll see whether those levels drop or stay.
22:49 [Cheering]
22:53 And I just hope that these skaters can hold on to this feeling, because it was a beautiful skate from a performance perspective.
22:59 Like we talked about earlier, it's so important for these teams to stay on their feet, and they did that.
23:04 And they didn't skate cautiously. You know, they gave it their all.
23:07 They really filled the space with their presence. I thought that was truly beautiful.
23:11 [Cheering]
23:20 Lots of smiles as the team comes off the ice and will eagerly be awaiting their marks.
23:25 [Cheering]
23:30 Let's take a look at some of the elements in this program.
23:34 [Cheering]
23:38 Beautiful opening right into character. Check out how tight this pivoting block is.
23:42 That's what teams around the world are aiming for. Tight spacing, great lineup, correct edges throughout.
23:50 Really nice way to start out the program.
23:53 This is their release of holds in the dust barrel where they went into one arm hold, which is for an added layer of difficulty.
24:00 Looking at their grip lift, you'll see that they do two different positions,
24:04 and they do difficult positions where the third skater skates away from the lift,
24:08 leaving only two skaters holding the skater in the air.
24:11 Very difficult to do, especially synchronized.
24:14 Gorgeous position there.
24:16 Looking at their angle intersection, it looks like that was downgraded to an intersection, too.
24:21 Pivoting, or the no hold here, that was their change of position for the difficult feature.
24:25 A little big in size. Just the spacing between the skaters could have been a little tighter there.
24:31 Looking at their traveling element here, again, a lot of space between those two spokes.
24:36 The tighter that those two spokes are together, the harder the element generally is.
24:41 This is their whip intersection. Sorry, go ahead.
24:43 Sorry, just remind the audience and myself here, in order, there's a number of skaters to make a mistake,
24:50 need to make a mistake in order for it to, it's just not one skater wrong edge or wrong turn.
24:55 Right. Generally speaking, it's a quarter of the team has to miss the correct move in order for it to be downgraded.
25:01 Yes.
25:02 Look at their pair spin here.
25:04 Lots of beautiful elements in this program.
25:09 And a true homage to their French heritage with the French song.
25:15 There's the flag we talked about yesterday.
25:19 Flying the flag.
25:21 Yep.
25:22 Interesting. So Dominic, their coach, used to skate for Nova Senior.
25:28 He was a former senior ice dancer and then got involved in Synchro.
25:32 Wow. Here's the score, 142.16.
25:37 So it looks like that technical score stuck.
25:42 Yeah, first team out, 213.97 is their competition score.
25:47 The two teams to come.
25:49 I think, I don't know if they saw the score.
25:55 They might have still been waiting there.
25:57 Exactly, they're still waiting for the score.
25:59 It's hard to hear over the noise.
26:04 Les Sopres, the coach by Marilyn Naguau.
26:09 Nexus.
26:10 Oh, sorry. Nexus.
26:11 Nexus, yes.
26:15 Choreographed by Jeremy Allen.
26:16 They're recognized.
26:17 Skating to Carmen.
26:20 She's here. She's arrived.
26:24 Open up to her.
26:27 She's not from anywhere in particular.
26:31 But she knows where she's from and where she's going.
26:36 Open up to this woman.
26:39 Her strength is her root.
26:41 Her story.
26:43 The one that holds her when she gets lost.
26:46 When she doesn't know where to go.
26:49 Open up to her strength.
26:51 It's the strength of her mother.
26:53 The strength of her grandmother.
26:56 If you're looking for a place to be free
27:02 From that so painful thing
27:05 That oppresses your soul
27:09 Yes, you need the refuge of the mortal
27:14 Of the waves of the world

30:32 [applause]
30:35 Such a beautiful and fluid program from Nexus.
30:41 A truly original take on Carmen,
30:44 but still sticking with the traditional strength of that female character.
30:48 I know they aim to portray Carmen's love for dance through this program,
30:52 and I certainly felt that strong female character through this program.
30:57 It's so remarkable that so many skaters can be so quiet on their blades.
31:02 I know that they've had great skating lessons from the great Ann Shelter, of course,
31:07 and those basic core skating qualities are so important in every sport, in every discipline,
31:13 but you can really see it here.
31:15 And that's something that doesn't translate through the screen, Ted,
31:18 so you're able to appreciate that in person.
31:20 Being at home, we hear the music, but we don't hear that glide
31:23 and just the silence of this team on the ice, but that's a very, very good point.
31:27 They have some of the best skating skills in the world.
31:30 Yeah, and you don't see--you know, you have the blade and you have the picks,
31:33 but they don't hit the picks.
31:34 The only--the blade is what makes contact with the ice.
31:37 It's what makes them ride and glide so well, and it's just beautiful to see.
31:41 You've been skating all of your life.
31:43 We recognize that, and you can see that and hear it here.
31:46 Most definitely.
31:48 Sometimes that can--again, like we talked about yesterday,
31:51 that's the beauty of our sport is making things look so easy,
31:54 but sometimes we fail to understand how hard it truly is as an audience member.
31:59 Really strong, powerful opening.
32:01 I felt they were so precise in all of their movements.
32:04 You can tell they've done a ton of off ice to perfect each of those positions.
32:10 Beautiful presence through their no hold, the first element.
32:14 This is looking at their group lift.
32:16 Again, it looks like a number of their calls were downgraded for the technical level,
32:21 so we'll have to see what the final result is because obviously they can review those calls.
32:29 But it looks like that was downgraded a level.
32:32 Now we're looking at their traveling element here.
32:35 Again, they were going for a travel level four.
32:39 Looks like it may have been downgraded to a three.
32:41 It's under review.
32:42 This is an interesting new element for this year.
32:44 So they're doing the angle intersection but without a point of intersection turn.
32:48 So they have to do anything but a turn, and Nexus chose to do those beautiful spirals.
32:52 Unfortunate collision.
32:54 That is one of the hardest elements, and having to do that point of intersection turn on one foot,
33:00 incredibly difficult.
33:02 I hope those two girls are okay.
33:07 Looking at the move element.
33:08 What I have to commend those skaters for is how they continue to get up and skate beautifully.
33:13 The next element had positive GOEs.
33:15 They didn't let that wrong fall throw them for the rest of their performance.
33:20 Interesting intro to the pivoting block there.
33:22 They went on a back outside edge where a lot of teams choose to do a forward inside edge or outside edge,
33:28 but typically teams will go into that element forward.
33:30 They chose backwards.
33:35 So many beautiful things here.
33:37 This is their creative lift.
33:44 Which they chose an interesting take on that as well.
33:46 Two skaters that were actually one on top of the other.
33:48 If you go back and watch the replay, those of us watching from home.
33:50 Really interesting lift.
33:52 Lots of creativity.
33:54 >> You can see Indica is a little bit worried perhaps about the ball and the scores coming up.
34:00 But we'll see.
34:04 >> We talked about how those falls affect the overall marks.
34:08 This team has a ton of potential.
34:10 But you know that wasn't the skate they were hoping to have.
34:13 >> We mentioned a couple times it's very early in the season.
34:17 This is the very first big competition of the competitive season for St.
34:20 Clair.
34:22 It always starts a little later than the other disciplines.
34:24 >> And all three teams looking incredibly strong at this point in the season.
34:29 We see such a huge jump between now, our national championships and the world championships held in April.
34:35 These teams continue to rise and evolve and improve.
34:38 Even though they're so good now.
34:40 If you can imagine a few more months of hard work, that's where they end up.
34:44 And it's remarkable now and even more so in a few months.
34:48 They continue to work incredibly hard throughout the season.
34:52 >> Sure the nationals being earlier in one way is a hassle.
34:56 But in other ways a blessing perhaps.
34:59 133.71 for the free program.
35:01 That is second in the free program with a total competition score of 205.95.
35:07 And that puts Texas in second.
35:09 Nova leaps over them with one team to come.
35:13 [ Cheering ]
35:23 >> Turning our attention to the next team and final team on the ice.
35:27 Who do we have, Ted?
35:29 >> Les supremes.
35:31 And they're coached by Marilyn LeGuan, Pascal Denis.
35:35 Tell us a little bit about the team.
35:37 >> They're journeying through Mount Everest, climbing the mountain and the journey and emotions of that journey.
35:44 [ Music ]
35:54 >> Mount Everest.
35:56 Everest.
35:58 Everest.
36:00 Everest.
36:02 [ Cheering ]
36:10 [ Music ]
36:20 [ Cheering ]
36:26 [ Music ]
36:34 [ Music ]
36:42 [ Cheering ]
36:50 [ Music ]
36:58 [ Cheering ]
37:04 [ Music ]
37:12 [ Cheering ]
37:18 [ Music ]
37:44 [ Cheering ]
37:54 [ Music ]
38:10 [ Cheering ]
38:20 [ Music ]
38:30 [ Cheering ]
38:40 [ Music ]
38:50 [ Cheering ]
39:00 [ Music ]
39:10 [ Cheering ]
39:20 [ Music ]
39:30 [ Cheering ]
39:40 [ Music ]
39:50 [ Cheering ]
40:00 [ Music ]
40:02 [ Cheering ]
40:04 >> That is amazing, but beautifully, wonderfully organized chaos.
40:10 It looks like chaos, but it's so well designed and intricate.
40:16 And the action with arms, with free legs, with excitement from beginning to end.
40:20 The end of the program, the artist says, "I'm on top of the world."
40:26 And it certainly feels that way for this team right now.
40:30 >> You know, I know the skaters are performing it.
40:32 I get it.
40:34 But someone had to think of that design.
40:36 Someone had to pick that theme and design the architecture of the opening pose even.
40:42 Just brilliant work by everybody involved.
40:44 >> And so creative.
40:46 I don't think I've ever seen or I don't think there's ever been a Mount Everest theme.
40:49 And you think about how long Sinker's been around, since 1956, and all of the programs
40:54 and the different concepts that have come through the years.
40:57 And to still be able to innovate and come up with new themes and new concepts is amazing.
41:02 And that's what continues to push the sport forward is when you see these new ideas come to life
41:07 and how that shapes the sport from here.
41:09 >> And I think there will be many more.
41:11 And as you begin to explore outside the tradition, if you will, of Sinker programs,
41:16 and we've seen that, the evolution from the old one, precision, if you will,
41:20 to now, which is completely a different sport, it'll continue to grow.
41:23 Because with so many skaters, there's so much possibility.
41:27 >> Take a look at the opening.
41:28 The cameraman didn't even capture her head.
41:30 She shot up so unexpectedly.
41:32 Really cool idea there, making the mountain that they were about to climb.
41:37 [ Background noise ]
41:41 Super creative opening.
41:43 Their first element was the move after the creative course, but we're looking at the move element here
41:48 with the upright extensions, the spirals, the billmins.
41:51 [ Background noise ]
41:54 Looking at the group lift where the two skaters are lifting the one in the air for the difficult feature.
41:59 Ted, as we were going through, I kept an eye on their technical scores.
42:02 It looks like they got most of their calls.
42:06 Huge marks, huge GOEs, and well-deserved.
42:11 Very tight pivot block there.
42:13 This is their death spiral element with one hand.
42:17 I loved how some of these elements, they just came out of nowhere.
42:20 You didn't even see them coming.
42:22 The pair spin was one of them.
42:23 It looked like you couldn't quite figure out what was coming next, and then boom, they were in a spin.
42:28 That takes a lot of work.
42:31 >> Six out of their ten elements are in the mid twos for GOE scores,
42:35 so they're adding a lot of points for pure quality.
42:40 >> Yes, and as we mentioned before, this staying on your feet is a huge factor in gaining the points that you deserve.
42:46 If you're falling, you know, that plays out in so many areas, and this team managed to have a clean skate.
42:54 Big benefits when you look at the points overall.
42:58 And you can tell they love skating this program.
43:01 The music not only gets the fans going, but it gets the team going.
43:05 They step into their no-hold block, and the beat starts to pick up, and you can tell they're having fun out there.
43:11 Makes a big difference when you love the music you're skating to.
43:14 >> Yeah, and it inspires you and pushes you and fuels you throughout your program.
43:21 >> This team shared one of their choreographers actually climbed Mount Kilimanjaro,
43:26 so they drew on the inspiration from their journey in creating this program.
43:31 >> Oh, now that's an interesting fact.
43:33 >> Not an easy climb.
43:34 I've never tried it.
43:37 The ones, the people I know that have, it's the feet.
43:40 >> Up the stairs in the house is a hard time.
43:43 Can't imagine the mountain, right?
43:45 >> Yeah, depends what the incentive is.
43:47 >> Yeah, exactly.
43:49 Wow.
43:50 >> This team trains five days a week, roughly 25 hours.
43:53 They have skaters from France, Switzerland, Japan, USA.
43:56 Actually, one of the skaters on the team is from Calgary and one from New Brunswick.
44:00 So a diverse group of individuals making up this team.
44:03 Love that.
44:08 They range in age from 17 to 29, so you can imagine that dynamic too, having a 17-year-old on the team and a 29-year-old,
44:15 and yet they come together, they gel for these awesome performances.
44:19 >> Yeah, in that case, age doesn't really matter.
44:21 I mean, you know, one supports the other.
44:26 >> Yes, absolutely.
44:27 You can see this team is all about having fun.
44:29 They're dancing in the kiss and cry.
44:32 >> And when they've skated that well, I mean, they're feeling good no matter what the score is really.
44:36 >> Yes.
44:37 >> Maybe they can do better.
44:38 I don't know how, but it's an incredible program.
44:42 >> Yep.
44:43 They'll be competing later this season at a few international events, the Budapest Cup in Hungary and the Mary-Lynn Mark Trophy in Finland.
44:50 >> And where are the world championships this year?
44:52 I should know that.
44:53 >> The world championships are early April in Zagreb, Croatia.
44:57 >> Oh, Zagreb, yes.
44:58 Go back there.
44:59 >> And as we talked about off air, Ted, it's not the top two at the national championships that are automatically sent on to the world championships.
45:07 So Skate Canada decides mid-February who will be going based on a factor of how teams did at the national championships,
45:15 how they performed internationally, and their potential to come in top ten at a world championship.
45:20 So there's a few different factors that go into the decision.
45:22 It's not just decided tonight.
45:24 >> Right, so that decision is not made here tonight.
45:25 >> Correct.
45:26 >> It is throughout the international season, which is upcoming.
45:29 Let's take a look at the scores.
45:30 >> Yes.
45:31 >> So that's the prep.
45:33 141.99.
45:37 That is second in the free program with a 216.79.
45:42 And that gives them the title Canadian champions.
45:46 Wow.
45:47 >> So I couldn't see what was under review from my end, but they must have reviewed a number of their technical elements after the fact.
45:53 >> I think there were four elements under review.
45:56 >> Okay.
45:57 >> Quick wrap up.
46:00 >> Awesome skating here in Canada.
46:02 Unbelievable.
46:03 Three incredible teams.
46:05 Every year I'm blown away by what we see from the senior division and just their ability to continue pushing the envelope of the sport.
46:13 You know, we've mentioned some of the teams, the innovation that they bring into their programs forms the rules for the sport worldwide.
46:20 And it's just so incredible to see this depth of talent in Canada.
46:23 I'm blown away.
46:24 How about you, Ted?
46:25 >> And remember, the season is just starting.
46:28 So these teams, as you mentioned, will get much better as they enter the international competitions and move towards worlds.
46:35 Up next will be the men's short program here.
46:38 Caitlin Osmond will be joining me in just a few moments.
46:41 Lisa, thank you so much for joining me from Montreal.
46:43 Sorry for a couple technical problems here and there.
46:46 But it's worked out very nicely.
46:47 We're so happy that you could join us.
46:49 Thank you.
46:50 >> I'm absolutely privileged to be here.
46:52 Thank you, Ted, for having me.
46:53 And thank you, Skate Canada, for having me as well.
46:55 >> No problem.
46:56 >> And with that, we'll be right back after this.
47:02 >> We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians support Canadian chicken farmers and the supply management system.
47:10 >> When consumers see the raised by a Canadian farmer brand, they can know that that chicken was raised in a healthy, safe environment.
47:19 >> Happy birds are healthy birds, and healthy birds provide a healthy food source for Canadians.
47:32 >> Skating is more than just a sport.
47:37 Skating is friendship.
47:39 Passion.
47:42 Skating is creativity.
47:44 Freedom.
47:46 It's about going faster.
47:49 Higher.
47:52 Skating brings us together.
47:55 It makes us cry.
47:57 It brings smiles.
47:59 Skating is what we love.
48:05 It is time to celebrate ice skating all over the world on World Ice Skating Day.
48:11 Learn a new sport.
48:13 Experience the magic of gliding together with your friends, your family.
48:20 Join us on World Ice Skating Day 2023.

49:20 >> Hey.
49:21 >> Just a heads up, going to miss dinner because of that office softball thing.
49:25 Oh, hold on.
49:26 You just texted.
49:27 Wow, that looks good.
49:29 You know what?
49:30 The team sucks.
49:31 We were going to lose that game anyway.
49:32 Be home in five.
49:35 >> Hey, Nadia.
49:36 >> Hey, Peter.
49:37 Have you seen the online skate candy store?
49:40 >> For the official merchandise?
49:42 >> Yes.
49:43 It's literally amazing.
49:44 You should get it.
49:46 >> By now.
49:47 >> You should get it.
