00:01:20 Good afternoon and welcome to the Winsports Arena at Canada Olympic Park.
00:01:33 This is the pair skaters short program. Again, my name is Caitlin Weaver and I am joined by Kirsten Moore Towers.
00:01:40 One of the best pair skaters to ever live and come from this glorious country. Thank you so much for being here.
00:01:46 I don't know about that, but I'm excited to be here.
00:01:49 How many national titles? Four. How many Olympics? Three.
00:01:53 Okay, I rest my case.
00:01:57 I'm so excited for this event, Caitlin. We just touched on it a little bit. Three teams in this event were at the Junior Grand Prix Final.
00:02:03 And actually we'll see one of them in each group here.
00:02:06 And for those of you that may not be aware, the Junior Grand Prix Final is the pentacle.
00:02:12 Is that the right word I'm looking for? A pinnacle? Pinnacle.
00:02:15 It is the pinnacle of the first half of the season of Junior Grand Prix International competitions.
00:02:20 The highest ranking teams get to go to that and to have three from Canada out of six is such a testament to the depth that we have.
00:02:29 It's like taking a look at the judges here.
00:02:33 This is important for our skaters, but also for our judges.
00:02:37 This might be one of their first national events.
00:02:40 Or we see some seasoned veterans that have judged at the Olympics as well.
00:02:44 Getting a good look at what Canada has to offer on the junior level.
00:02:49 Sunny El Tat.
00:02:51 Kirsten, walk us through what we can see in a junior short program.
00:02:56 Yeah, great question. So today we're going to see seven elements from each of the team.
00:03:01 We will see a double or triple twist.
00:03:04 We'll see side by side jumps. They're required to be either a side by side double lutz or double axel.
00:03:10 Teams can do a throw double or triple loop.
00:03:13 They will do any group three lift. Group three means hand to hip.
00:03:17 The man will lift the woman using her hip.
00:03:20 We'll see a solo combination spin, a forward inside death spiral and a step sequence.
00:03:26 Nice. Do you remember being at this level?
00:03:30 What was important to you at this time?
00:03:32 You know what? I did junior pairs for only one year.
00:03:35 But the thing I liked about it was actually these prescribed elements because it forces the teams to actually learn all of the different throw jumps, all of the different lifts.
00:03:42 It's important for their development. Here they are.
00:03:45 Here we are looking at our first team. Kicking us off, Julia Quattrotti and Simon Demarais.
00:03:51 From Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Natalia Custodio and Chris Hammer.
00:03:58 Not a lot of people in the audience, but the people that are here are excited including us.
00:04:04 And our first team from the final, hot off the ice in Beijing, Jasmine Derrocher and Kieran Brasher from Ontario.
00:04:13 Looking relaxed as usual.
00:04:16 And I know I mentioned in our little intro there that this is a seasoned team, but actually they really aren't.
00:04:22 Jasmine only started pair skating in September of 2022.
00:04:26 This is her first year with Kieran. Last year she skated with Aiden Wright, who we'll also see in this event.
00:04:32 So though these teams have made big leaps in their first seasons, first couple of seasons together, they really are relatively new.
00:04:41 Here we have our first team to skate, Julia Quattrotti and Simon Demarais.
00:04:47 Also their first season together, this team withdrew from the final, sorry, from challenge competition.
00:04:53 Here Natalia Custodio and Christopher Hammer of Alberta.
00:04:58 And here they are, Jasmine Derrocher, Kieran Brasher.
00:05:02 Kieran, a little bit more seasoned in pair skating, has been to the Junior World Championships with a former partner.
00:05:09 And I was talking to Bruno Marcotte, their coach, right before this, and he reminded me that Kieran was a AAA hockey player.
00:05:17 Yeah, that's correct. I remember when Kieran was choosing whether he wanted to pursue figure skating or hockey.
00:05:22 Here a nice warm up single twist from Julia and Simon.
00:05:26 Easy to say that lots of talent graces the ice here in Calgary.
00:05:33 That's right, we're really in for a treat today and I think it's so important to see the different levels of these teams.
00:05:40 We see Natalia's wrist wrapped here. This is actually a really crazy story.
00:05:44 She has a torn ligament currently in her wrist.
00:05:47 Has been cleared to skate here, but has to be a little bit creative about how she does it.
00:05:52 There we saw a single axle from Jasmine, warming up for what will be her double.
00:05:57 And I'm noticing that some of the teams are doing a bit more of a slower pace with their elements.
00:06:05 So they're doing warm up exercises, they're doing a single instead of a double.
00:06:10 Do you find that at Junior you do see more of that progression as they warm up, as opposed to hitting the ice and whipping off a triple twist, for example?
00:06:18 Yeah, for sure. I think we see the level of the team, their level of comfortability.
00:06:23 And I think a lot of that is strategic as well. If a coach knows their team requires a little bit more time getting into their ankles to give them the best chance of success, then they will definitely make that plan.
00:06:34 Here a group three lift. We see Simon lifting Julia with his right hand on her hip.
00:06:39 Julia grabbing her foot for a difficult feature. There a change of position.
00:06:44 Oops, that was meant to be an exit from them.
00:06:49 You know, some of these ice surfaces, even though they all follow the guidelines of NHL size or Olympic size, the corners can be a different shape.
00:06:58 And sometimes those corners come up a little bit faster than you're ready for.
00:07:01 That's right. They do, especially with a little bit of nervous energy that these teams surely are feeling.
00:07:07 Yeah, that's right. And for that team, Julia and Simon, their first year together and their first year in junior pair.
00:07:14 So it's important to remember, too, these teams are experiencing this big arena with big lights, with cameras, with analysts in the stands, all of this for the first time.
00:07:24 So it can bring a certain level of anticipation and anxiety, and it will be up to them to channel that in the most efficient way.
00:07:32 Here setting up for their throw loop. This team will just do a double today. Really nicely done.
00:07:40 Everyone looks calm, collected. They do. And I have to say, I'm so impressed they looked that way in practice as well.
00:07:47 We see a lot of coaches here that are coaches of teams that compete on the international stage.
00:07:53 So their coaches certainly will know how to help them to navigate this.
00:07:58 You mentioned that Jasmine and Kieran have only been skating together for one season and Bruno, their coach, was telling me that their goal this year was just to get a single Junior Grand Prix assignment.
00:08:09 Let alone two and a berth to the Junior Grand Prix final.
00:08:14 How does that feel as a new team, you know, facing the world so soon?
00:08:20 I think, you know what, I think you can use that to your advantage.
00:08:24 A little bit of the mentality of you achieved your one goal and everything else is kind of icing on the cake.
00:08:30 But I know this team and I know that given these opportunities, they want to do more and more and more and see how far they can push it.
00:08:38 Something else that I really like here, Natalia warming up her double axel.
00:08:43 Something else I really like about these teams is that so many of them seem to have the potential for longevity.
00:08:49 We see them with the correct match physically.
00:08:54 And it seems like a lot of them are mentally and matching in their goals and their the way they want to go about it.
00:09:02 And that is so beneficial for maintaining a pair team for one, two, three, ten seasons.
00:09:08 You can speak to that having the same partner for so long.
00:09:11 And I think probably a lot to say about their coaching.
00:09:16 You just coaches that have that experience, know personality types and skating styles and what who you can put together for growth.
00:09:27 That's right. And then who you can surround them with.
00:09:32 And it's so awesome to see someone like Bruno Marcotte in his school from so many different countries, amazing athletes, having an impact on those of our athletes here at home.
00:09:41 That's right. And yeah, like we mentioned, we see Bruno Marcotte down there, Jeff Langdon.
00:09:46 We see Stephanie Valois and Yvain Desjardins, all coaches of teams that were on the senior Grand Prix.
00:09:51 Bruno, of course, of course, coach of world champions, Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford.
00:09:56 So these coaches have been here for a number of years and they know how to form these teams and guide these skaters in a way that is most conducive for for longevity and for being able to compete in this discipline as long as they want to.
00:10:12 Kirsten, I'm an ice dancer. I love watching Paris, but I don't know a lot about it at this level.
00:10:18 Please leave. What could be their potential challenges for us to look out for?
00:10:23 I think especially at this level, we really want to look out for when a team has a slight bobble or something not go their way that they're able to regroup, get back into it, get back into the performance.
00:10:35 Remember their key points.
00:10:37 All right. That leads us to our first pair, Julia Quatrochi and Simon Desmarais representing Quebec.
00:10:44 He's 19, she's 17. Coached by Yvonne Desjardins. And their short program music, Never Tear Us Apart.

00:13:52 A nice start to the event from this new team. We heard from their coaches that Julia actually broke her thumb in the summer, which halted some training for them.
00:14:02 They were training throw triples and had to stop training throw triples and start, stop training those difficult lifts.
00:14:08 Well, that thumb healed. I thought they did a really great job today.
00:14:12 Definitely a strong start to this junior pair event.
00:14:15 I love how connected they were. And maybe that's the ice dancer in me. Perhaps their pair elements weren't as difficult or as clean as some of the ones that we'll see later on.
00:14:24 But it's all about growth at this level.
00:14:26 That's right. Growth and the developmental aspect of this team. This is the starting place for them.
00:14:32 We saw a throw double loop. We saw a triple twist. Sorry, excuse me, a double twist.
00:14:37 We will see a throw triple loop later and triple twist later. So obviously not quite the level of difficulty as you mentioned.
00:14:43 Looking pleased nonetheless. Yeah, that's right.
00:14:48 This program never tears apart. Choreographed by David Wilson, one of the best choreographers in the world.
00:14:55 So they definitely have great people in their village.
00:15:02 I'd love to see the connection looking here at what will be their twist.
00:15:06 Double twist. They will have gone for that split feature. Difficult steps preceding the twist.
00:15:13 Here their side by side double lutz.
00:15:18 And their group three lift. You see Simone lifting Julia by her hip. There's her difficult position.
00:15:24 Difficult feature, change of position here.
00:15:27 And their exit.
00:15:34 And here to their throw double loop.
00:15:37 Little off axis in the air. She did a great job to sell that landing.
00:15:41 And their forward inside desk spiral.
00:15:43 Aptly named because the woman is on her forward inside edge.
00:15:48 Makes sense. It sure does.
00:15:50 I also liked they seem to be connected to the performance. They carried a lot of speed and flow.
00:15:58 They had a great foundation.
00:16:00 They come from a really great pair school.
00:16:04 As I mentioned, Stephanie Valois and Yvain Desjardins, their coaches, their training mates will be in the senior event and have been to senior Grand Prix.
00:16:11 So they have great training mates in them.
00:16:14 We can see that they've really paid attention to those details.
00:16:20 Let's take a look in the kiss and cry.
00:16:22 They look happy.
00:16:24 You know what? This might be the end of the journey for some for this season.
00:16:30 This might be the start to the second half.
00:16:34 At the end of the day, it's about putting in a great performance.
00:16:38 Let's take a look at their score. 46.77 to start out.
00:16:43 For Julia and Simone.
00:16:46 Next up, representing Alberta, Northwest Territories, Nunavut.
00:16:50 Representing Alberta, Newfoundland, Nunavut Territories, Natalia Custodio and Christopher Hammer.

00:20:03 Natalia and Christopher, second to skate here, the junior pairs.
00:20:11 What a comeback story.
00:20:12 Yes, I want to talk about this because we
00:20:14 see that Natalia's left hand and wrist is wrapped here.
00:20:18 She actually has a torn ligament in her hand.
00:20:20 She has been cleared from doctors to skate here.
00:20:22 It is safe for her to skate.
00:20:24 But because she's not able to put any pressure
00:20:27 into her hand or wrist, this team
00:20:29 has had to rethink how they do everything.
00:20:31 If we get a look at the replay of the Desperado,
00:20:33 you'll notice that Natalia is not holding Chris.
00:20:36 She's making a fist because she simply can't.
00:20:39 So this adds additional challenges
00:20:40 when it comes to the twist, where it's required for her
00:20:43 to push off, and for the throw loop, when
00:20:45 it's required for her to push off.
00:20:47 So they really have done an incredible job
00:20:50 to figure out a way to make this work for them
00:20:54 in a way that's safe.
00:20:55 All smiles there in the kiss and cry.
00:20:57 Wave in the camera.
00:20:59 What an incredible story that is.
00:21:02 And also just to--
00:21:04 what a testament to their training, their coaching team,
00:21:06 and their connection to be able to say, you know what?
00:21:08 We're going to have to change everything about how we skate,
00:21:11 but we're still going to do it.
00:21:12 Yeah, perseverance.
00:21:13 They pulled out of the Skate Canada Challenge
00:21:15 because they just didn't have enough time
00:21:17 to figure it out at that point.
00:21:18 Here we see their double twist.
00:21:20 Just see, it doesn't quite go up to the top
00:21:23 as much as we'd like it to.
00:21:24 Natalia just is not physically able right now
00:21:26 to do that push right into their side-by-side double axles.
00:21:30 But even to get base value for that sounds incredible.
00:21:34 Yeah, it's really an incredible story,
00:21:36 and one I have never heard before in all my years

00:21:40 Here, their side-by-side combination spin.

00:21:47 A difficult variation of that camel spin.
00:21:51 Little bit out of sync here.

00:29:15 We just saw Kieran's pick move there.

00:29:19 This is such an easy element for them.
00:29:22 What does that mean if his toe pick does move
00:29:24 from the ice in that element?
00:29:27 The judges will decide when exactly it moved
00:29:30 and how many rotations they completed
00:29:32 before his toe pick moved,
00:29:34 and that will be a big point differential,
00:29:37 especially in the short program.

00:29:44 Well, with only two berths to the junior world team,
00:29:49 every little bit matters.
00:29:52 They have to know maybe that wasn't their best,
00:29:55 but definitely an improvement from the junior grand prix final
00:29:58 in the short program, and they have a long program to go.
00:30:01 That's right.
