00:00:00 person and not and not to forget sorry but the uh russian pair teams and the love triangle
00:00:06 that was going on that was going on i mean that was and it was in the papers all across canada
00:00:12 it was just and and watching the you know it was elusive for us to see the russians actually
00:00:16 practice and people would go watch russian practices and just watch them stroke yeah for
00:00:20 20 minutes they would just stroke and people would watch and off yeah so okay now what now what um
00:00:27 okay so let's get on with what happened last night a bit of a shorter day for us but it was
00:00:32 synchro day so we watched the junior synchro free program and finals alisa prime and first nexus and
00:00:39 second and nova and third um they were very close going into the free program the results and
00:00:44 placings didn't change but the point spread did but i would also like to mention ice ignite now
00:00:50 this is a program that has been around for a long time by the moyers um they've been running this
00:00:55 and i i can't help but notice the difference i know scott is involved now with synchro and
00:01:00 stylizing the skating but this ice ignite program you got to keep your eye on it because i think
00:01:06 they're they're moving up yeah lisa carriere was talking about the development of that team and
00:01:10 how they've matured and how they have been choreographed and they are you know making
00:01:15 leaps and bounds uh improvement in in their program so they're a team that perhaps in the
00:01:20 future may break may break into that nova and les supreme and and nexus uh you know hold on the on
00:01:28 the podium i absolutely think so i'm looking forward to just to watching them and then in the
00:01:33 synchro uh les supreme and first ice ignite oh sorry les supreme and first nexus in second and
00:01:40 nova in third and i think there's only three points separating these teams that's in the senior
00:01:45 senior category yeah so it's gonna be yeah really anything this could totally switch anything can
00:01:50 happen and we've seen that in the past yes okay up next we've got uh senior women coming up are we
00:01:55 on that well senior women is our first senior event today short programs all day today and
00:02:00 after what we've seen we need to talk about the importance of these short programs because you
00:02:04 can't win it with a short program but you need to be in a good place going into the free because
00:02:10 there's been a lot of movement we have not seen i don't think a clean no we haven't seen a clean
00:02:14 performance yet yeah so we're looking for it'd be nice to see some clean skates today but
00:02:19 positioning is going to be key also because there are so many podium spots on the line this year
00:02:25 i don't recall a year when there's so many open spots it makes the event really exciting both for
00:02:30 the live audience uh here in the building but also online because it's so unpredictable you know we
00:02:34 can say that but it's really true here we don't know what's going to happen there's no leaders
00:02:39 obviously maddie skis we got it absolutely but after that piper and paul yeah absolutely yeah
00:02:45 but i also think there's that extra pressure now knowing you know you might have come here before
00:02:50 thinking okay the podium's locked up so i want a good position now you have a shot to get there
00:02:54 yeah so you have to stay composed and within yourself yeah to perform and in the senior women's
00:02:59 event six new skaters are not new but have moved up from junior and so uh you know one third of
00:03:07 the event is brand new to the senior category but that you know they're the chasers they're
00:03:12 the hunters so who knows what will happen it's going to be exciting all right so we'll talk
00:03:18 about the rest of the events tomorrow okay i'm all about the the women today but we're going to move
00:03:24 on i've got a new segment i'd like to introduce i'm calling it connect the dots because as you
00:03:28 know i like to connect the dots so what we're going to connect today is former canadian women's
00:03:33 champion josé schwenard with former canadian pairs champion jean-michel bombardier and you get a
00:03:40 fiona bombardier who is competing in both senior women and senior pairs and that's amazing i was
00:03:46 talking to caitlin osmond who does some research on this and talking to josé yesterday about
00:03:51 fiona's uh adventure if you will into pairs and singles i said she didn't realize how difficult
00:03:56 that was to do it's a shock to the body but we'll see her here in both the senior women's senior
00:04:01 pair event and fiona and gab do look good so we'll see all right calgary fun facts yes please okay
00:04:08 i'm just letting you just run through the whole story so so today um and this is more maybe in
00:04:13 alberta not just calgary thing the number of tv and tv shows and movies that have been filmed here
00:04:20 i have a few just to name jumanji the next level brokeback mountain cool runnings the jamaican
00:04:26 bobsled story legends of the fall the revenant like some big productions have happened here
00:04:32 not surprising this beautiful landscape obviously not today but you know in the in the fall in the
00:04:37 summer in the spring it's beautiful here absolutely okay your sponsors my sponsors we would like to
00:04:42 thank skate canada sponsors the chicken farmers of canada canadaflowers.ca and corporate travel
00:04:51 also presenting sponsors of the event the province of alberta and tourism calgary the audio and
00:04:58 lighting partner sw video i had so much fun chatting to everybody on the headsets yesterday
00:05:04 now that everybody can hear me and event partners culligan water cb charlene bailey who did the
00:05:10 flower retriever and always does a great job with the flower retriever outfits and saint francis herb
00:05:15 farms thank you to you all for supporting the organization and all the young skaters as well
00:05:21 okay up next is the weather we know what it's like here what is it like well let's say in edmonton
00:05:25 pretty much like this everywhere so actually fort st john i thought we'd start in bc minus 35 feeling
00:05:31 minus 46 edmonton minus 37 feeling minus 44 confirmed by caitlyn osmond who checked the
00:05:38 the the temperature outside our house this morning montreal is a balmy minus 6 feeling minus 11
00:05:44 with snow and i'm sure the cold is coming that way and my favorite is in calgary it's minus 35
00:05:50 feeling minus 45 however i got an extreme cold warning on my phone this morning like it hasn't
00:05:58 been cold enough that we may hit minus 55 with the windchill whoa it's hard just walking from the car
00:06:04 in the parking lot which is just across the street into the building and you dare i mean if you fall
00:06:10 i think it took me 10 minutes to get the ice off the inside of the windows last night in the car
00:06:14 it is cold and it's cold down here as well so we're gonna wrap this up right now to get up into
00:06:19 the warm area of the arena and where are we gonna go before we we're gonna go back to 2004 to the
00:06:24 throwbacks and we've got some great video from that competition that happened at ebbington the
00:06:29 last time the national championships were here in alberta and we're going to take a look at the
00:06:33 women's event uh seven time national champion jennifer robinson was going for an eighth title
00:06:39 but it just didn't happen the way she had planned to but such a classy champion she was in third
00:06:45 joy joannie rochette in second and the champion that year new and young and delightful cynthia
00:06:51 fenuf take a look at the throwback to 2004 canadian championships and we will be back
00:06:56 with the first day of senior competition with the senior women's short program enjoy
00:07:00 the ladies brought a smile to everyone's face never before has there been five standing ovations at
00:07:16 our nationals ladies championship it was outstanding courage resulting in outstanding skating over the
00:07:24 past seven years the canadian champion jennifer robinson has exhibited the true form of a champion
00:07:30 jennifer always knew how to dig deep and produce what she needed to win this character combined
00:07:36 with her skill and class were the best example our young skaters in canada could have it was
00:07:42 this year that those lessons learned would be on display by our young skaters skill and youth began
00:07:47 to produce and create a demanding competitive environment and so going into the free program
00:07:53 it was anyone's game lund belmar brochette sanuf and of course the reigning canadian
00:08:00 champion robinson all were positioned all were focused outstanding performances from all made
00:08:08 the judges decision complicated and it came down to the last skater jennifer robinson
00:08:13 it was a classy and courageous performance it all comes down to the judges jennifer robinson
00:08:24 must finish first or second in the free skate to reclaim her title but sitting in the kiss and cry
00:08:32 there was concern and with the same determination and class which she has always displayed
00:08:40 she absorbed the loss and congratulated the youth
00:08:46 once again giving a lesson to the young of what being a real champion is all about
00:08:54 robinson bronze rochette silver tanuf gold
00:09:00 wanna be calling
00:09:14 because i'm over your touch but i know it's never enough
00:09:18 good morning everyone welcome to very very bitter cold calgary albert of the national
00:09:36 skating championships i'm your host ted barton along with 2018 world champion caitlin osmond
00:09:41 the women's short program coming up in just a few moments yes and it's going to be an exciting one
00:09:46 there's a lot of returning uh senior women from last season plus some extra juniors that did
00:09:52 really well last year like the junior champion of harrishi so and everyone's been skating so well on
00:09:58 practices including um reigning canadian champion madeline skisos and i just saw the short program
00:10:05 in the practice session and for the first time i think this maddie's short program is absolutely
00:10:11 spectacular it is a world world class level no question now a lot of course in this sport depends
00:10:16 on the jumps but the program is simply outstanding of course you want to have those strong elements
00:10:21 you want to have the strong jumps but that full package skater is what's going to be memorable
00:10:25 for the audience for the judges and create that full package that everybody's looking for and you
00:10:30 have to think that maddie you know is the favorite to win here it'll be a three pete for her so that
00:10:34 would be pretty amazing she's two-time canadian champion what about second and third well of course
00:10:39 uh last year's silver medalist kaya writer has been doing really well looking very strong on
00:10:44 practice alongside silver bronze medalist fiona bombardier who's balancing a pair's event also so
00:10:51 first time doing double discipline so it'll be interesting to see how she manages that but she
00:10:55 looks extremely good on practice i was talking to her mom josie spinard and she's saying she
00:10:59 was a little unaware of how difficult to do two disciplines well senior category senior pairs and
00:11:06 senior women's quite amazing it is amazing and then again the field that's just the podium from
00:11:11 last season there's another field that's wanting to get up the ranks heady she is wanting to make
00:11:16 her mark on the seniors on the senior stage and also the fie fien laundry she won the challenge
00:11:23 event coming into her actually edging out kaya writer in the free program so i'll be interested
00:11:29 to see how everyone's going to fight today it's going to be incredible battling stay tuned for
00:11:33 some great skating here at the canadian national skating championships women's short program coming
00:11:38 up right now
00:11:56 fabricated dream reaching for what i see in everybody else that's never what it seems

00:14:29 so
00:14:31 welcome everyone to calgary and the first day of the senior competition women's short program coming up in just a few moments i'm ted barton along with
00:14:47 caitlin osmond 18 women here in the senior short program senior event yes and i might be a little biased to this event maybe but i'm really excited practices were very exciting to watch everyone looks like they have a fire under them and the determination
00:15:07 that would be incredible if they can pull that together to do this short program today and set the stage for the rest of the athletes especially in this first group yeah and you know we talked about it in the juniors we didn't see any clean solidly clean program as we take a look at the officials for this event we thank them for all their time of course and
00:15:28 so we're hoping to get some really strong performances no matter where that ends up no matter what the score is if we can get a skater who escaped the very best they can in that program looking for that hopefully it starts here in the women's short program yes and as i said there's a lot of talent even in this first warm-up group and a lot of triples happening a lot of triple triples being attempted so there is a risky element happening in the jumping passes
00:15:55 but they're also trying to build that full package program which everyone knows i love the most yes you do and also we'd like to welcome our listeners in the building here who have purchased the skate bug radio we'll be commenting you hear our comments as we take a look at the technical panel for this event all full day of competition here of course we'll start with the women's short program and then we will move on to the
00:16:24 rhythm dance opening ceremonies the pair short program synchronized skating
00:16:32 three senior teams of course and then we'll finish today tonight with the men's short program and here is the introduction to our first group nor huda for a from Quebec also from Quebec julienne lucie and from Ontario Natalie rocket honey
00:16:58 and from Quebec rose there oh training here in Alberta
00:17:06 from Ontario Christina Lyons
00:17:11 and another Ontario skater Catherine Medlin-Spence
00:17:17 okay you've been watching the practice sessions leading up to this event what have you seen well in this warm-up group especially there are the triple triple attempts that I mentioned there are some that are playing it a little bit safer sticking with the triple sows and triple toes not leading into the triple lots is all that often but they are being done
00:17:40 but yeah it's it's exciting yeah well we're gonna see what a lot of great music
00:17:47 yeah you know and these are more mature skaters and so you're gonna get a higher level of performance and perhaps skating skills in the senior than you would in the juniors and even if it's a more simple technical program we're hoping for some team programs so get some inspiring performances
00:18:05 of course here on the screen is Catherine Catherine Medlin-Spence and she does always really exciting to watch just because she carries so much power across the ice all of her jumps have been extremely solid there's nothing left to question
00:18:25 and first skaters out in this day of competition in the senior category and we've often talked about it you can't win the event with a short program but you need this short program to place yourself to have a shot to take the title or to make the podium
00:18:42 exactly the short program is extremely important and it'll be who can have two of the best programs that will will be higher ranked here's a look at Christina Lyons on the screen just getting warmed up
00:18:58 just a reminder you'll see seven technical elements there'll be three jumping passes and three spins in one step sequence and although it's a technical program really the program components the the composition and the skating skills and the performance are also critical as well
00:19:16 of course and unlike the junior event where there are required elements it is a little bit more free in the senior event where you get to pick your top elements to perform them your top jumping passes except for the required axle yes there's always a required axle
00:19:33 there's a look at Juliane Lussier talking to her coaches she is quite the perfectionist and she doesn't do well with mistakes so hopefully that will stay strong today and the perfectionism comes out
00:19:48 yeah it's hard you know it's those people that are perfection you know they focus on perfection of everything can be bothered by the smallest of detail but then if you're not focusing on perfection you're probably less than you can be so it's fine balance
00:20:03 is a fine balance is a look at Rose Theroux she has recently made the move just before the challenge event to train with my previous coach Ravi Walia I've worked with her on this short program to work on a performance she's a very shy girl yeah so we've been working really hard to keep her head up and I'm excited to see that and build her confidence on that
00:20:23 it's fun to watch the development of these athletes and yeah they're in the senior category but they're still quite young in their development stage in just maturity and learning how to cope in these stressful situations exactly Rose is only 16 years old a lot of these skaters are still junior eligible yeah so I mean a big part of this sport the reality is is that you can learn to skate but learning to compete means handling the situation
00:20:52 handling the stress whatever goes on in your head whatever goes on at home whatever goes on at school all that comes down to when you're on this ice all sorts of thoughts and being able to align yourself and your energy to produce your best skate that takes time it takes experience exactly we talked about it a little bit on when it comes to competition is it's more mental strength or physical strength and I made the joke that it's a hundred percent mental because at this point in the year
00:21:21 you would think that the jumps are there you know what you're gonna do you know what to expect of course there's always a risk here and there but at this point you're trained you're ready to compete but now it's do you have the mental strength and make it through the competition yeah and what does mental strength mean does it just mean part just complete focus on your technique and or does what does that mean exactly it means something different for everybody sometimes it's focusing on the jumping passes sometimes it's focusing on the jumps
00:21:50 passes sometimes it's focusing on the choreography sometimes it's managing stress or pressure or nerves everybody feels nervous but it's always affecting people differently so knowing your body knowing that awareness of how to to use your mental strength to your benefit do you know when you have that mental strength is it a feeling of comfort how would you explain
00:22:16 I don't think there's ever a moment of comfort until after the program then you knew maybe I was always more nervous after I competed maybe I'm just weird now it's such a complicated it's very difficult to talk about I mean you've talked about in the Napa you're a world champion for gosh sake so you know reflecting back at how you got to your great performances what was there a pattern to that
00:22:45 you was there a pattern to that were you in control of that or was it just luck I mean I don't mean well I think there's part of it that's luck there's always a part of sport that is luck especially on an ice surface the ice is slippery you can be as trained as possible but if your toe just doesn't hit the ice the right way one day or if you're a little bit ahead or if your legs just a little bit tighter that is the luck in my opinion but overall managing that stress managing the nerves
00:23:14 when you know you that you're ready to go and when you're at your best mentally is when you can get on the ice and you can use it you talked about the stress being creating fear or fuel it is fuel yeah if you use it properly if you use it properly here we go women's short program here in Calgary at the National Skating Championship first day of senior competition
00:23:41 the nice warm - 36 outside it's colder in the building who are wearing scarves in here our first competitor represents Quebec 20 year old nor huda for a 17th at the challenge event the qualifying event held in early December in Winnipeg she's coached by Caroline Massey
00:24:05 and she'll skate the first skater out in the short program to the Phantom of the Opera

00:28:01 every single skater has a different goal yeah that's true there could be a
00:28:08 personal best score personal best skate without score whatever here's a look at
00:28:12 some of that opening choreography very sharp stretching through the arms eyes
00:28:17 are up head is up and then here's a the beginning triple toe double toe getting
00:28:24 lots of height and distance on the first double toe and then trying to reach back
00:28:29 ready to go but not quite there and having and doing the three turn into the
00:28:33 double and then here's a look at the triple Lutz really quick with the arms
00:28:37 on rotation but having to result to that under rotation just not quite completing
00:28:41 but here's that amazing knee action one of my favorite elements to do in a
00:28:47 program is controlling and demonstrating your control following a jump and
00:28:51 staying on one foot and then a change of edge spiral here leading into her step
00:28:55 sequence of course not required but when was the last time you seen a train to
00:28:59 a spiral in a competition yeah not very often but it's such a beautiful move
00:29:02 you'd like to see it more just covers the entire ice great positions on her
00:29:08 spins trying to get that difficult exit of the laid back we're just having to do
00:29:15 the illusion on the same foot that you're spinning on already
00:29:20 Noruda said once I stepped on the ice at the age of five did not want to get off
00:29:27 that's when you get addicted to the to this sport because it is difficult it's
00:29:33 beautiful it's satisfying it's frustrating to my golf I guess here we
00:29:39 go let's take a look at scores the short program forty seven point five eight
00:29:42 first skater out for no huda for a from Quebec
00:29:53 our next competitor also represents Quebec 19 year old Julie and Lucia she's
00:30:01 coached by Louie's Michaud 16th at the challenge event qualifying here for the
00:30:07 national championships choreographed in the short program by Julie Marcotte
00:30:12 she's gonna skate beautiful beautiful song voila by Barbara probably
00:30:21 ecoutez moi

00:52:28 I think it was pretty nice performance. I mean just to miss a little bit on the
00:52:35 Sal, but other than that. It was a very well skated program. Very fast. I love how
00:52:41 much she attacks her jumps when she goes into them. And it's there. I'm just trying
00:52:47 to figure out her facial expression right now because she seemed happy at the end
00:52:50 of the program. And now it's like slowly going down but then the smiles back. Yeah.
00:52:54 I'm not 100% sure. Yeah. I'm trying to read her mind and I'm not mind reading
00:52:58 very well. I think probably you can see her coming off the ice. Head's down but the
00:53:01 smile's on. Why? Well she said I'm so close to a clean program for myself. You know
00:53:05 just so that little step out. The rest of the program was you know pretty strong. A
00:53:08 lot of basic skating. Not a lot of transitions from element to element. You
00:53:12 need that to really be at that top senior level. But certainly a good outing.
00:53:19 There's her coach, Josie Schneid. She looks happy about it. Yeah.
00:53:27 Wonderful smile. Positive. Great here focusing on those arm angles. Get the
00:53:37 choreography. Get into the ice at the beginning of the program. And then here's
00:53:43 a look at that opening jump. It was triple loop here. Very well done. Triple
00:53:47 loop double toe. Really tall back and always has really relaxed posture. In a
00:53:54 good way. Double axel. Lots of speed coming out of it. And then here her only
00:53:59 real mistake in this program. Triple sow. Just a little far back on her foot as she
00:54:05 came down. She had to step out on that. And missing part of the rotation. So that
00:54:12 will come in as under rotate it. In great spin position she really made that match
00:54:20 the music. And that adds to the overall package of the program.
00:54:25 Because everyone's doing the same spins and the same jumps. The same tricks as
00:54:30 you would say. But you want to have something that makes it memorable. And
00:54:33 adding a little snippet of choreography or making it match the music. That's what
00:54:38 the judges are looking for. The tech panel is looking for what tricks are
00:54:42 doing. But the judges are there.
00:54:45 -Sherparkum scores for Christina Lyons. 48.56. That'll put Christina
00:54:51 currently in the second place. You'll see nodding her head. Okay that's good. That's
00:54:55 good. Pretty close to Rose.
00:54:59 Our next competitor represents Ontario. 23 year old Catherine Medlin-Spence out of
00:55:08 the Nepean Skating Club. Coached by Dan Gordon, Kent and Danielle Rose and Jodi
00:55:15 Bierko. She qualified 12th at the Skate Canada Challenge in December in
00:55:22 Winnipeg. She's up here at the National Championship about to skate the short
00:55:26 program. And it's choreographed by Julie Breaux. And she'll skate to "Take Me Home
00:55:31 Country Road" in no time for emotion.

00:58:20 So frustrating.
00:58:28 It is.
00:58:30 Whenever you jump, you know that there's a risk that something could go wrong.
00:58:34 But when you're trying to perform and you're trying to maximize those points in a step sequence
00:58:38 and she was selling that step sequence and to have a fall in there,
00:58:42 they're so unexpected and they wind you. They hurt.
00:58:45 Yeah, because you're down so quickly, just hitting the toe pick, of course.
00:58:49 You can see her trying to catch her breath there.
00:58:52 But overall, I really enjoy watching her skating just because of the attack that she has
00:58:57 and the athleticism that she really demonstrates into her jumps.
00:59:01 She gets into her rotating position so quickly.
00:59:04 And that triple toe, triple toe, I've seen her do that all week so solidly, no question.
00:59:10 Unfortunately, it didn't work today, but you see her athleticism in that triple loop that we see.
00:59:16 Hopefully, we'll see her in the leagues.
00:59:18 She has really good technique, no question, very quick and strong.
00:59:21 But under the stress, on the big stage, it's always a little different.
00:59:26 I've seen her skate in the past where the choreography has really been a second thought.
00:59:30 And here you see her really trying to add it this year, which is amazing to see.
00:59:36 Trying to improve. Great save on that double axel.
00:59:39 Just got a little ahead of herself, but had the control of the knee bend.
00:59:43 Here, triple toe, very solid on the landing, but didn't get into the rotating position
00:59:47 quite quick enough on the second triple toe.
00:59:49 So she landed forward, missing a full half rotation.
00:59:52 And then here, this triple loop is so solid.
00:59:56 I've seen her do it where she holds the landing position just a little bit longer.
01:00:00 And then, yes, here into the selling of the step sequence,
01:00:03 but really covered the ice multiple times.
01:00:06 - She's had to take the fall on the steps. - Unfortunately, yes, having to take the fall in the steps.
01:00:15 She was 7th last season at the National Championships.
01:00:21 So it proves that she has the ability, she knows she can do it.
01:00:24 Now, she's at the Carleton University in biochemistry and biotechnology.
01:00:29 - That sounds complicated. - That sounds very beyond my capabilities or understanding.
01:00:35 - Okay. - Can you teach me what you're learning?
01:00:38 What is that?
01:00:40 Her parents put her into skating lessons, and she just loved to skate fast, as fast as she could.
01:00:46 - Well, you see that. I don't think she's lost that love. - No, that's for sure.
01:00:50 She said, "What are her hobbies?" Reading books and crying about the Ottawa Senators.
01:00:55 - I get it. I'm an Oilers fan. - Yeah, that's why. You shouldn't be crying now. You guys are on a roll.
01:01:01 - Have you seen the beginning of the season? - Yes. We beat you a bunch of times.
01:01:05 Don't remind me.
01:01:07 - See her and her coaches just waiting. - Yeah.
01:01:12 - Waiting to see. - You know, the neat thing about all these athletes, they're just great people.
01:01:18 We want for all of them. 41.71 for Catherine Medlin-Spence.
01:01:23 That's fourth in the short program so far in the competition.
01:01:29 Rose Perot is still in the lead.
01:01:34 - No clean programs yet. - Close.
01:01:39 Everybody out there, you've got to cross your fingers, do something. We need some clean programs.
01:01:43 - I'm not allowed to talk anymore. - No, you don't. You jinx everyone.
01:01:46 Okay. We're going to take a short break during the ice resurfacing. We'll be back.
01:01:49 You're watching live coverage of the women's short program, senior short program here in Calgary

01:13:52 And we are back in cold, cold Calgary.
01:14:01 Let's check the temperature. It is 36 below zero.
01:14:04 Caitlin Osmond, I'm Ted Barton, the second group of the women's short program,
01:14:09 senior women's short program, coming up in just a few moments.
01:14:12 I thought you were just complaining because you were from Vancouver,
01:14:15 but it's definitely not warm.
01:14:16 No, I know. So it's really cold outside.
01:14:18 You told me that the boiler's not working in this rink.
01:14:21 It's cold down in the outfield area.
01:14:24 We were down there doing the opening. It was really cold.
01:14:27 And so that cold is just slowly creeping into the building.
01:14:31 But minus 36 outside, you can kind of understand.
01:14:33 Yeah. Yeah, it's going to be cold.
01:14:35 And wind chill factor, I think it's close to 42, 43 below.
01:14:39 It's not often you get this, but last time we were here at the Junior World Championships,
01:14:45 it was the same thing.
01:14:46 No, it wasn't.
01:14:47 Yes, it was.
01:14:48 I don't believe it. I don't remember it completely.
01:14:51 It's never that. I don't remember it being this cold.
01:14:53 And I live in Alberta.
01:14:55 Yeah, because it's like that for you all the time.
01:14:58 No, it's not.
01:15:00 And you know, you live in Alberta. Can you back me up here? It's not this cold all the time.
01:15:04 I know it is. That's like in Vancouver. It does rain all the time.
01:15:07 Okay, it does.
01:15:09 Here we go. Group number two in the Senior Women's Short Program.
01:15:13 Looking for that magical clean program.
01:15:16 Hoping all the athletes, wishing them the very best.
01:15:20 Brecken Bresdin will be the first skater in that group.
01:15:23 Next up will be Justine McCleat from Quebec.
01:15:28 Also from Quebec, Mary Frances Demore.
01:15:34 And from Quebec again, Mary Maude Parmerleau.
01:15:40 And keeping with the theme, Adrienne Foster.
01:15:45 The final skater in this group from British Columbia Yukon, Juliana Shirieva.
01:15:55 Yes, that elusive clean skate.
01:15:59 Yes, it's hard.
01:16:01 It is hard.
01:16:03 How long did it take you again? Let's remind them.
01:16:05 That was a free program. It took me seven years to get a clean free program.
01:16:09 Okay, but shorts are different. There's only three jumps.
01:16:12 How long did it take you to get that?
01:16:14 Instant.
01:16:16 Was that when you were doing doubles?
01:16:18 No, no. I was always a short program skater.
01:16:22 Long programs, I just can't focus for four minutes straight.
01:16:26 You know what I love about you? I love your honesty.
01:16:29 I mean, you just say what's on your mind. I love it.
01:16:32 You know, it's so real and grounded.
01:16:34 And you were Olympic champion on the team event,
01:16:38 Olympic bronze medalist and a world champion.
01:16:41 You've lived everything these skaters are on the ice, lived, you've worked with your coach,
01:16:46 you've done it all, and you're able to just be honest with your feelings
01:16:51 and your thoughts and your experiences. I love that about you.
01:16:53 It's more fun that way.
01:16:55 There's a look at Brecken Bresden from Manitoba,
01:16:59 training now full time with Jen Jackson and Bryce Davidson with Hamilton.
01:17:04 She has had a year between a mistake on a jump resulting in hip issues
01:17:11 and then a lot of skate issues.
01:17:13 She's gone through two pairs of skates that just keep seeming to break.
01:17:16 And then even just moving into a new pair of skates, well, a new old pair,
01:17:20 she found a pair that were broken in but not broken down that she moved into last week.
01:17:24 So just training flips and lenses more fully consistently in her program as of this week.
01:17:30 So it'll be really interesting to see how she does this week with just the lack of repetition and training.
01:17:36 And then here on the screen, I know if you're listening on the rink,
01:17:40 you probably have no idea what I'm talking about.
01:17:42 Well, they can see on the screen.
01:17:44 They can see on the screen. Okay, perfect.
01:17:45 So there on the screen is Adrienne Foster, well, it was.
01:17:49 And she is also a very shy girl, but this is such a fun program for her.
01:17:53 And I've had the honor of working with her just a little bit and working on just keeping her head up
01:17:59 and not just her head, but her eyes. It's so easy to keep your head up, but it's easy to look down.
01:18:04 And we were just looking at Juliana Sharieva.
01:18:07 She's this is her first time at the national championship.
01:18:11 Seniors and pretty good jumper and got some work in other areas.
01:18:18 All the skaters do.
01:18:24 A lot of great talent in this warm up group, a lot of Quebec talent in this group.
01:18:30 Very nice triple sal up there.
01:18:38 And what I love about the second warm up group is that there's always wild cards.
01:18:44 They were ranked mid in the group or high, mid to high at the challenge competition
01:18:53 and then had an extra month of training since the challenge competition until now.
01:18:58 So just improving just that little extra bit.
01:19:01 So you never know what's going to happen from this group,
01:19:05 whether they're going to perform and fight to be in that final group tomorrow or one of the elusive short programs.
01:19:13 Yeah, they've demonstrated the skill to be able to be in that final six with the program, but they'll have to lay it down.
01:19:21 As do everyone.
01:19:23 Exactly. But the interesting thing is, if you if everybody doesn't skate well, then who is on the top?
01:19:30 The ones that have the full program, the skating skills and the performance, all those details, you know,
01:19:36 and then maybe one jump that is more difficult.
01:19:39 Exactly. Skating has become so difficult.
01:19:42 Well, it's always been difficult, but I feel like it's even more difficult now because everyone is learning these hard tricks.
01:19:47 A lot of our junior skaters are doing the triple triples are doing the triple lutzes and triple flips.
01:19:52 So what sets you apart? What makes you memorable?
01:19:55 Well, that's the rest of it. Yeah. And you've got to be able to do a full package program.
01:20:00 There's no specializing in anything anymore. You need to be able to do it all.
01:20:03 Yeah. To some degree, the jumps, I don't want to say aren't important that you have to do the jumps.
01:20:08 You still have to do them. No, no, you have to do them.
01:20:10 But everybody, nobody's doing quads or triple axles and limits.
01:20:13 OK, so they're all pretty much the same. So now what comes into play?
01:20:17 It's a connection with the music, the performance, the skating skills, the edge, the multi rotational turns.
01:20:23 All those small details, which are not so small, I guess. And the wow factor.
01:20:28 And the wow factor. Right. The wow factor. You need to stand out.
01:20:32 You need to find a reason that the judges will look at you and remember what you did.
01:20:38 And you know what? You always have that. Well, thank you. I'm going to take the compliment.
01:20:42 I'm not going to fight that one. Well, you talk about it because you know it. Right.
01:20:46 You understood you were an actress on the ice. You got into character. You could you could sell.
01:20:51 For myself, jumping was really difficult, especially at my at my younger years.
01:20:57 I did not get my triples until I was in senior and 16 years old.
01:21:01 So and then and then I learned how to jump in. Life became a lot easier for me.
01:21:08 But everyone has their strong suits, whether it's their jumps, whether it's their performance.
01:21:13 And then it's a true athlete and a true elite athlete when you bring your weaker elements
01:21:18 and try to match it and go beyond your best elements.
01:21:21 Well, well said for all the young skaters out there. Listen to that.
01:21:27 That's the journey. It's easy to train the things that you love doing.
01:21:30 Yeah, it's the it's training the parts that you probably don't want to train.
01:21:36 It's kind of like in life. I'm really good at taking the garbage out and vacuuming the house.
01:21:40 Oh, good for you. I'm not. But I'm not going to fix this brutal.
01:21:43 Like if I fix things, I break them again. So I'm good at loading the dishwasher, but not unloading it.
01:21:51 I thought you're going to say I'm good at loading the dishwasher, but not starting.
01:21:55 Sometimes I'm really good at forgetting that part. OK, here we go.
01:22:00 Enough of the chitchat. Let's get back down to competition and see if we can find that magic performance.
01:22:15 Everyone hopping off the ice, not wanting to put their blades on the ground.
01:22:18 Yeah. Jen Jackson and Bryce Davidson, the coaches of our next competitor, 18 year old Brecken Bresden.
01:22:30 11th at the challenge event, the qualifying event for this competition out of the Hamilton Skating Club.
01:22:37 Choreographed in the short program by Tammy McKay. And Brecken will skate to I Hear a Symphony.
01:22:50 I used to hear a simple song that was until you came along. Now in its place is something new.
01:23:03 I hear it when I look at you.
01:23:32 With simple songs I wanted more. Perfection is so quick to bore.
01:23:56 You are more beautiful by far. Our flaws are who we really are.
01:24:08 I hear it when I look at you.
01:24:30 I used to hear a simple song that was until you came along.
01:24:55 You took my broken melody.
01:25:02 And now I hear a symphony.
01:25:30 And now I hear a symphony.
01:25:42 Well, what an enjoyable skate by Brecken. You can see that she loves skating and it's so hard not to smile along with her.
01:25:49 It just looks so fun to be out there.
01:25:52 Yeah, I mean, we're talking about that off air in the fact that you want to compete and you want to do well and you want to get the jumps done and get the points and all of that.
01:26:01 But you also have to try to enjoy the process. I think Brecken totally enjoys the process.
01:26:06 She does. And she came from a really small town of Dauphin, Manitoba.
01:26:12 And there was very little to offer in terms of competitive skating. And for six months of the year, ice isn't even available.
01:26:19 And then having to train nearly drive nearly two and a half hours just to get to one of her coaches training centers.
01:26:26 So moving to Hamilton now has made her life just a little bit easier.
01:26:32 A little less time in a car. Yeah. More consistent training. I love this. No, no, no. I love this.
01:26:38 What started you skating? Is it? Well, my dad wanted me to be a hockey player like him.
01:26:42 He was a can't skate coach, though, made the call to switch to figure skating. That's awesome. Outranking dad.
01:26:49 Look at that beautiful smile. Let's take a look inside the program.
01:26:55 And there's that smile and you see it never leaves her face this entire program.
01:27:00 Starting a program with a spin, which I feel you rarely see.
01:27:04 Beautiful. And it's nice to take that opportunity to settle into the program before you had to launch yourself up into the air.
01:27:13 Here, here is that first launch into the air. So look at that triple toe and putting the hand down plan, triple toe, triple toe.
01:27:21 Not quite getting not able to get that done. And then here, triple out really far forward on the landing, but still squeaks out that little double toe there.
01:27:32 And then this beautiful double axel carrying so much height and speed across the ice and then holding that landing tight on the landing position,
01:27:40 they're landing on the quarter. And then again, also that triple sow double toe.
01:27:46 Both are also landing on the quarter and the triple toe. So deductions on each of those jumping passes beyond what we what you can see very clearly.
01:27:58 But still such a lovely skater. Yeah, it brings joy to the ice through her own joy of skating.
01:28:05 And let's take a look at the scores for Brecken Breslin from Manitoba.
01:28:11 Forty four point seven two. And that will put Brecken currently into fourth place.
01:28:16 Our next skater represents Quebec, 17 year old Justine Meklet. Justine's had some international experience.
01:28:34 She's a fierce competitor, 10th at the Challenge event, coached by Yvette Desjardins and Violaine Emar.
01:28:42 Choreographed and short program by Joey Russell. We hear that name a lot because he's really good.
01:28:48 So.
01:28:51 Oh.
01:28:53 Oh.
01:29:22 Oh.
01:29:23 Oh.
01:29:24 Oh.

01:30:59 [ Singing ]
01:31:28 [ Music ]
01:31:44 [ Applause ]
01:31:46 >> Well, you can see Justine look to the ceiling, look to the heavens with a little frustration.
01:31:50 [ Speaking in Foreign Language ]
01:31:53 >> Justine.
01:31:54 >> Single flip.
01:31:55 >> The single flip is really going to impact the scores.
01:31:58 But she really tried not to let that interfere with the program.
01:32:02 But unfortunately, just a single flip, getting no points on one jump in a short program, it adds up really quick.
01:32:10 Or it doesn't add up really quick, I should say.
01:32:15 Justine has the ability, there's no doubt.
01:32:18 She was junior champion two years ago here, has gone to junior world.
01:32:23 She was third this year at Autumn Classic.
01:32:26 But unfortunately, just mistakes, the inconsistency.
01:32:30 >> Yeah, you know, and we've seen all these skaters skate better earlier in the season.
01:32:34 Because this is the big stage, the national championships brings a little extra pressure and anticipation and desire, really.
01:32:42 And makes you rush your timing or --
01:32:45 >> Here's a look at some of those jumping passes, starting off here with triple toe.
01:32:50 Landing too far forward to catch it and having to do that double toe.
01:32:54 Good for her for not pushing through on the triple and taking the fall deduction.
01:32:59 And then here, really rushing the takeoff of that flip.
01:33:03 It seems that her technique has changed from previous years on that flip.
01:33:08 It used to be a lot more jarring.
01:33:11 And here's a look at that double axel.
01:33:13 That was really well executed.
01:33:14 And then here, that lay back, stretching all the way up into a beautiful Bielman position.
01:33:22 So she has these abilities that are there.
01:33:29 But the short program, you don't want to make mistakes.
01:33:32 Of course, you don't want to make mistakes in the free program either.
01:33:34 >> You have a bit more time to recover.
01:33:36 >> You have a bit more time to recover.
01:33:37 You have options.
01:33:41 And in the short program, you don't.
01:33:42 >> No.
01:33:44 It's costly.
01:33:45 50.75 for the short program.
01:33:48 And that will put Justin McClink currently in the first place.
01:33:51 [ Applause ]
01:33:58 >> Close.
01:34:00 >> 50, 49, 48.
01:34:04 >> Our next competitor represents Quebec.
01:34:07 19-year-old Marie-France Demore.
01:34:09 8th, qualifying 8th at the Challenge event.
01:34:13 In December, she's coached by Mary-Christine Garnier and Audrey Garnier.
01:34:19 Again, choreographed by Joy Russell.
01:34:23 She's skating to "I Will Never Love Again" by Lady Gaga.

01:37:04 [ Music ]
01:37:18 >> On cue, go.
01:37:20 >> Yay.
01:37:21 >> Exactly.
01:37:22 Yay.
01:37:23 >> That was such -- the first clean program of this event.
01:37:27 And not just clean, but very well executed.
01:37:32 And lovely.
01:37:33 >> Yeah, actually, it's funny because you can't hear us, but off air when we're talking, we're wanting for these athletes so badly.
01:37:41 And when they land the jumps that they have intended to do, we're going, yes, you know, it's -- and this was great.
01:37:48 Because this is the first tidy, clean program that we've had so far.
01:37:51 Actually, at the championship.
01:37:53 >> With no reviews.
01:37:54 >> Yeah.
01:37:55 >> Oh, maybe.
01:37:57 Ted doesn't want to switch the name of the skater for me.
01:38:00 >> Good point.
01:38:01 >> No.
01:38:02 >> But, yeah, still, no reviews.
01:38:03 Very well executed program.
01:38:06 And enjoyable to watch.
01:38:09 I don't know much about Mary France right now.
01:38:13 She was junior last season.
01:38:15 And really a wild card.
01:38:17 And that's why they're wild cards.
01:38:18 Because they're new.
01:38:19 >> Yeah, they're new.
01:38:20 You're new to seeing their faces and seeing their talent.
01:38:23 I do remember parts of this program very well from last year.
01:38:27 Just in the choreographing movement, she has really great ways of moving, great explosiveness, especially on choreographic jumps.
01:38:33 But here's a look at that triple lutz, double toe.
01:38:37 Very nice.
01:38:38 Very well done.
01:38:39 >> Under rotated on the lutz.
01:38:41 >> Maybe I should look closer.
01:38:42 >> And a cue on the salchow.
01:38:44 But that's okay.
01:38:45 Sit up.
01:38:47 >> They're looking close.
01:38:49 >> Wow.
01:38:50 >> They're looking really close.
01:38:52 Here's a look at that double axel.
01:38:54 Her feet are just so tidy in the air.
01:38:56 There's speed coming out of those jumps.
01:38:58 There is height in them, too.
01:39:00 >> I love that.
01:39:01 >> I love that so much.
01:39:02 I want to try to figure it out, but I feel like I just said it on my face.
01:39:09 >> And beautiful spin.
01:39:10 >> Great spin.
01:39:11 >> Position at the end.
01:39:13 >> Level 3 on the sit spin.
01:39:15 Level 3 step sequence.
01:39:16 Level 4 flying camel.
01:39:19 And level 4 combination spin.
01:39:21 So it's not the highest tech program.
01:39:23 There's no triple, triple.
01:39:25 Second term is triple salchow, but it was well done.
01:39:27 >> Yeah.
01:39:29 49.6.
01:39:31 And that will put Marie France currently into second place.
01:39:34 Certainly some qualities to continue to work on.
01:39:36 But for her, this performance, national championships, kind of new to this.
01:39:40 Solid skate.
01:39:42 And the jumps.
01:39:46 Our next competitor represents Quebec, 20-year-old Marie Maude Pomerle.
01:39:51 Pomerleau.
01:39:55 She qualified seventh at the Skate Canada Challenge event.
01:39:58 She's coached by Stephanie Vars, Isabelle Deliquette, and Francois Parise.
01:40:04 She'll skate the short program to top set.
01:40:15 >> Let's go.
01:40:24 >> Let's go.
01:40:33 >> Let's go.
01:40:42 >> Let's go.
01:40:51 >> Let's go.
01:41:00 >> Let's go.
01:41:09 >> Let's go.
01:41:18 >> Let's go.
01:41:29 >> Let's go.
01:41:38 >> Let's go.
01:41:47 >> Let's go.
01:41:56 >> Let's go.
01:42:05 >> Let's go.
01:42:14 >> Let's go.
01:42:23 >> Let's go.
01:42:32 >> Let's go.
01:42:41 >> Let's go.
01:42:52 >> Let's go.
01:43:02 >> Well, we had a big yay at the triple toe, triple toe.
01:43:15 And then, oh, and the popped triple south.
01:43:18 >> I think I'm as invested into these programs as they are at this point.
01:43:21 >> Yeah, we are.
01:43:23 We're all pulling for them, that's for sure.
01:43:25 >> But such an interesting program.
01:43:27 Great music.
01:43:29 Great hops and skips and tricks.
01:43:31 >> Some nice angles.
01:43:33 >> Very good angles.
01:43:35 And when you're going to skate to a Britney Spears song, you need those.
01:43:41 But unfortunately, that triple toe, triple toe was so good.
01:43:44 >> And then followed by a jump that's not going to get in.
01:43:48 >> No.
01:43:50 It's in as a double salchow.
01:43:52 >> Yes.
01:43:54 >> Triple jump.
01:43:56 >> And then here, just walking up to the kiss and cry.
01:44:02 >> With a slight wave to the camera.
01:44:04 >> Marymode is an amazing artist.
01:44:08 On Instagram, she has amazing artistic abilities in drawing.
01:44:15 You see that artistry here in her choreography.
01:44:17 She's really good at keeping her eyes up and really focused in on the judges here.
01:44:26 Trying to match the music.
01:44:28 >> Must be hard to be completely absorbed in the music when you still have your jumps to go.
01:44:32 There's that triple toe loop.
01:44:34 Look at the ice coverage.
01:44:36 >> A little hesitant on the landing position there.
01:44:38 But good.
01:44:40 You can see it did land a little bit on the cue.
01:44:42 And then here, she took off.
01:44:44 She wanted to rotate, but it just got too big.
01:44:47 Her left arm got a little too excited.
01:44:50 And just committing to the full rotation is a little too difficult.
01:44:55 Here are some of those -- oh, there was about to be really amazing hopping, skipping angles.
01:45:03 >> Yeah, nice choreography in the step sequence.
01:45:10 >> Very fast spins.
01:45:12 Nice positions.
01:45:15 >> Two is a level four.
01:45:17 And the final one, which you're just watching here, comes in at a level three.
01:45:22 Level three for the step sequence as well.
01:45:24 So maximum level, of course, is four.
01:45:26 So leaving a few points on the table in one spin and the steps.
01:45:34 >> In evaluating them, though.
01:45:37 >> Sherpa Gump's score is 50.55.
01:45:40 And that will put Mary Mo Parmenleau currently in the second place.
01:45:48 Pretty close.
01:45:55 Our next competitor also represents Quebec, 19-year-old Audrey-Anne Foster.
01:46:08 Qualifying fifth of the challenge event, she's choreographed by Kim Tissells and Joy Russell.
01:46:13 And she's ready to objection.

01:49:10 >> That was good, Caitlin.
01:49:12 >> That was such a fun program.
01:49:15 And I'm very impressed with Audrey-Anne.
01:49:19 She's always been just so shy.
01:49:21 And you can see that in not really giving your reaction at the end of that program.
01:49:25 >> Yeah, well, you had more reaction during the program.
01:49:28 The energy of the choreography kind of matched the energy of the music for sure much better than we saw in the practice session.
01:49:34 And at the end, I thought she was going to give like a little fist bump or something.
01:49:37 >> No.
01:49:38 >> No.
01:49:39 >> Never.
01:49:40 But I'm really impressed with her.
01:49:42 She kept her head up.
01:49:43 She actually gave smiles throughout the program.
01:49:45 Which if you've seen her in past years, that's big.
01:49:51 And then of course starting off that program so well with the triple flip.
01:49:55 And then we thought she had that triple toe, triple toe.
01:49:57 I'm excited to see the review on that.
01:50:00 >> Yeah, I think she even thought she had it.
01:50:02 And then just free leg was a little bit slow coming back.
01:50:04 Let's take a look.
01:50:06 >> See her eyes are up there.
01:50:07 A slight smile on her face.
01:50:13 And such amazing posture.
01:50:14 And that posture is never different.
01:50:16 You watch her on practice, you watch her anywhere.
01:50:18 And that posture just stays so strong.
01:50:20 And that really helps on these jumping passes.
01:50:22 Just like this triple flip.
01:50:23 Get plenty of height in the air.
01:50:25 And then that tall back on the landing position.
01:50:28 Exactly what you're looking for.
01:50:30 And then here that triple toe carrying so much distance across the ice.
01:50:33 And then lifting onto the second.
01:50:35 And just a little tight on the landing.
01:50:38 That's what I thought.
01:50:39 It did land on the cue.
01:50:41 And it's really hard to save those landings on a cue.
01:50:43 >> Quote it.
01:50:44 >> Yes, sorry.
01:50:47 >> And then a beautiful double axel there.
01:50:50 And then here that performance, that smile on her face.
01:50:57 And focusing through the turns.
01:50:59 Level 3 on the step sequence.
01:51:01 Level 2 on this last lay back here.
01:51:05 >> Two features.
01:51:07 >> Great illusion, though.
01:51:09 A little out of control.
01:51:11 But really kicking that leg high.
01:51:13 >> Yeah, probably got the difficult exit.
01:51:19 >> And then duck.
01:51:23 >> Duck.
01:51:24 No reaction.
01:51:25 >> There's a reaction.
01:51:30 >> Started skating at the age of 3.
01:51:33 So she's been on the ice for a good portion of her life.
01:51:37 >> One of the best things that she wrote on this bio sheet is that the first time she
01:51:42 watched skating on TV, she's like, I could never do a program by myself.
01:51:46 >> Oh, really?
01:51:47 >> Yeah.
01:51:48 And then here she is.
01:51:50 Skating a program by herself.
01:51:52 >> That's the thing about this sport.
01:51:54 Everybody else can do triple whatever.
01:51:56 I won't.
01:51:57 And then you discover you can.
01:51:59 There it is, 53.22 for Adriana Foster.
01:52:01 She takes the lead here.
01:52:03 One skater to go in group number 2.
01:52:06 And I don't see too much of a smile yet.
01:52:09 >> Pretty solid performance, unfortunately, on the combo.
01:52:13 But, you know, coaches are happy.
01:52:17 >> Our next competitor represents British Columbia, Yukon section, 16-year-old
01:52:22 Liliana Sharieva.
01:52:24 She qualified fourth at the Skate Canada Challenge.
01:52:27 She's coached by Joanne McLeod and Neil Wilson.
01:52:33 She'll skate a short program to "Deliver Us."
