00:00 Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03 Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet is supporting money-saving plans to convert the authority's County Hall headquarters in Matlock into a hotel, homes and offices,
00:13 after revealing that less than a third of the building is currently occupied by staff following new working patterns.
00:19 The Council's Cabinet voted in favour of a report supporting County Hall's conversion, but stressed that the Council still intends to be based in Matlock on the same campus.
00:29 County Hall is a Grade II listed building, originally built between 1853 and 1886 as Smedley's hydropathic establishment,
00:38 after Matlock was developed as a spa town following the discovery of thermal springs at Matlock Bath in 1698.
00:45 It is hoped that the changes to the building will result in 130 new hotel jobs, address a hotel accommodation shortfall in the area,
00:52 and bring an estimated £56 million to boost Matlock's economy.
00:58 Derbyshire's towering bodybuilder, Jamie Christian-Gihal, aka Giant, is taking on the Gladiatorina as part of a reboot of the iconic 90s TV series.
01:08 Standing at 6ft 5in, the former firefighter turned bodybuilder, made history by becoming one of the all-time tallest bodybuilders,
01:16 and now he's flexing his muscles on the small screen.
01:19 Jamie is a familiar face in the local fitness scene, and owns and operates Ilkeston Gym and Fitness on Wood Street alongside his wife Katie.
01:27 You can catch him in action in Gladiators on Saturday at 5.50pm on BBC One.
01:32 So, I am Giant, as you just said, the Gladiator.
01:37 But behind Giant is a young 38-year-old man called Jamie Christian from Derby.
01:43 I was a very, very avid fan of the show previously when it was on ITV, and I don't know if I say ITV.
01:50 But anyway, I was a fan of the show before when I was 7 years old till 15, and that really inspired me to get into training and bodybuilding,
01:57 and I hope I can do the same for the younger generation watching it now.
02:00 So, I am Steel, the Mr. Nice Guy, but very good at the games.
02:05 Real name is Zach George, age 33.
02:08 I've been a professional CrossFit athlete for 10 years, and I was Britain's Fittest Man 2020.
02:14 I would describe Sheffield as, oh my God, this has just come to my head.
02:18 Sheffield's got to be one of the hilliest cities in the world.
02:23 Don't go for a walk in Sheffield unless you want to work out, that's what I'd say.
02:27 But over and above that, I think I noticed it's a city that looks like it's developing.
02:35 It's got some older areas, and they look like they're putting a lot of money into making the area a lot nicer.
02:41 So, the modern architecture that I see and the city centre, it looks like it's had a lot of money spent on it.
02:46 I would say in five years' time, it's going to be a very, very nice place to visit.
02:51 It still is a nice place to visit, but it's going to be even nicer.
02:54 So, obviously, we touched on me being from Derby, and I've visited Sheffield before.
02:58 I've been to the Meadow Hall many times for a bit of shopping, you can't beat that.
03:02 And the gladiators did come for the odd outing in Meadow Hall, so that was good.
03:05 But what we did find around where we were staying during the filming of the show,
03:11 there was a nice pizza place across the road called Ruby's.
03:14 So, that got hammered, to be fair.
03:17 And then Roxy's Ballroom, I like a game of pool, and that was some good down time away from the filming.
03:22 But, yeah, Sheffield, great city.
03:24 So then, Steele, you had, as we've already mentioned between us,
03:29 a couple of weeks to kind of see the sights, get around Sheffield while Gladiators was being filmed in the arena here.
03:35 Tell us a bit about how you found the city, what was it like, you spent so much time here.
03:39 Absolutely loved it. So, first of all, the crowd in the arena was absolutely insane.
03:44 That was one point. And it was just a great city to be in.
03:48 Obviously, I am Steele, and this is the city of Steele, so I had a lot of support that way as well.
03:53 But it was long days filming, 12 hours, so we didn't get a lot of free time to go to lots of places.
03:59 But we were eating out in great restaurants, went to a few different places,
04:03 where they could play bowling, pool, things like that. So, just a really great, friendly city.
04:07 So, obviously, we've all got individual strengths.
04:10 My strength is my size, my stature, and that requires a lot of training.
04:15 So, I would train probably three hours a day, five days a week.
04:18 That's why I obviously rest to just make sure you can keep going and battle injuries and recover.
04:23 But I'll tell you what people don't consider when you're trying to maintain a large amount of size and muscle.
04:29 It takes a lot of eating as well. So, I might be eating for twice the amount of time I'm training.
04:34 So, if I'm training for three hours a day, I'll be eating for six. That's what I would say about me.
04:39 Breakfast is big, as you can imagine. I just have to keep my breakfast away from Steele.
04:45 Steele's allergic to nuts. I don't know if I'm allowed to tell you that, but that is kryptonite.
04:51 Anyway, my bowl of oats in the morning is from a salad bowl.
04:55 So, the salad bowl is probably as big as my head, and it's full to the brim with oats, blueberries,
05:02 whey protein, nut butter, banana. There's probably 2,000 calories in that bowl of oats in the morning.
05:09 I eat a lot of porridge oats in the morning. So, I normally have a huge bowl that I probably feed three people.
05:15 So, yeah, my friends are very used to me having a huge bowl of porridge.
05:19 And then alongside that, I'll have a bacon as well. So, probably a breakfast that I normally feed five people.
